Juan Nelson, longtime bassist for Ben Harper and the Harmless Criminals, has died
Juan Nelson, the long-term bassist for Ben Harper and The Harmless Criminals, has died aged 62.
Harper confirmed the information on Twitter, saying: “Beloved husband, father, musical genius, BHIC band member of 27 years, and the best man I’ve ever identified. It’s close to unimaginable for me to place phrases to this ache and loss. Relaxation In Glory our beloved Reverend Juan.”
He confirmed that Nelson died final Wednesday (June 9). No explanation for dying has but been revealed.

Nelson’s first present with Harper was on April 30, 1994 in Claremont, California, and commenced a strong 27-year stint as a key member of his band. He co-wrote a variety of tracks on the band’s albums ‘Battle for Your Thoughts’ (1995), ‘Diamonds On The Inside’ (2003), ‘Each Sides Of The Gun’ (2006), and ‘Lifeline’ (2007).
His daughter Naisha has arrange a GoFundMe on behalf of his widow Katherine to assist cowl rapid bills. It has already outstripped its objective of $10,000 (£7,000).
“We misplaced somebody who’s past particular. A person of god … a husband, father, son, a good friend, and one dangerous ass musician,” she wrote. “He was a person who liked and honored his household as his household liked and honored him.”
Other than the Harmless Criminals, Nelson’s credit as a performer and recording artist embody Brenda Russell, Al Wilson, Freddy Jackson, Sunny Inexperienced, Joel, Neal Larson, Eric McFadden, Charles Wright, Piers Faccini, Victor Rocha and extra.
His final look on a Ben Harper undertaking was ‘Name It What It Is’, launched in 2016. Harper’s subsequent information had been an album of duets with Charlie Musselwhite and a solo slide guitar file, respectively.
