Listen: Jayda G's Brilliant Sophomore Album is a Testament to Her Heritage

Following a string of breakout years starting in 2020, Jayda G has released her remarkable sophomore album, Guy, on Ninja Tune.
Guy is a deeply personal look at life of the DJ’s father following his death. Through each of the 13 tracks, she adeptly explores his struggles and growth through a sonic journey incorporating recorded tapes of his voice that he left behind. It’s a beautifully transformative body of work, allowing fans to experience his life while giving them a glimpse at the man who helped shape Jayda G into the person she is today.
“I think the biggest thing that drove me to understand more of his life is that my dad, just a few years before he was diagnosed, had worked so hard on himself,” says Jayda G. “He went back to school to become a social worker, examining himself and his own demons, and really working on himself in the process. And I think it’s just a testament that it’s never too late to look at yourself and try to understand why you are the way you are, and try to be better. Understanding the Black man’s experience, Black people’s experience in terms of America, and rising above what society tells you you’re supposed to be.”

The album contains her previously released singles “Blue Lights,” “Scars,” “Meant To Be” and “Circle Back Around,” which already gave fans an intimate taste of its overall feel. She continues to build upon the theme with enchanting house tracks containing her signature vocals. Each song is meticulously produced, with delicate percussion and subtle grooves that create an intoxicating soundscape from start to finish.
Each track is a deep dive into her father’s life and those he influenced or influenced him, centering around formative moments. “Heads Or Tails” examines his time in the Army while being stationed in Thailand. “When She Dance,” on the other hand, is about the admiration she has for her grandmother, who raised her father on her own while carving out a successful life for herself.
Jayda G has outdone herself with Guy. The Canadian producer has written yet another Grammy nomination-worthy album, solidifying her status as one of the most exciting acts to watch within dance music.
