Aphex Twin clarifies controversial COVID-19 statements

It’s a weird world when even Aphex Twin is being pressed for political correctness, but here we are.

The English musician recently caught flack for a comment posted to the bio of Soundcloud’s User18081971, an account that’s all but confirmed to belong to him. The statement in question read, “‘You stupid tin foil hat wearing idiot’, said the person wearing a 2 month old soggy mask,” leaving fans perplexed about Aphex Twin’s stance on the current pandemic.

A recent update to the profile attempts to clarify that stance, now reading,

..had a lot of Pm’s, tried to answer a lot of them individually but to the ones I didn’t reply to: I definitely don’t think Covid is a hoax, I’m just very worried about the erosion of civil and human rights and how we are to get them back.

While this clarification isn’t the first time that Aphex Twin, real name Richard D. James, has lamented about the erosion of civil liberties. It also runs perpendicular to previous statements about the reporting of COVID-19. A note shared in April to User18081971’s account (which has since been deleted and re-shared) wrote “When you are presented with [COVID-19] statistics, you must demand whether the figures reflect people who have died WITH [COVID-19] or FROM [COVID-19]. Please do not forget this.”

This approach has been proven dubious, however, with Dr. Maja Artandi, medical director of the Stanford CROWN Clinic for COVID-19 patients recently telling Reuters that a key to understanding the reporting of COVID-19 deaths is that “If they had not gotten the infection, they would still be alive.”

In other Aphex Twin news, the musical sage teased a new project of some sort earlier this week with mysterious billboards in Berlin, Los Angeles, London, and Bristol. Details are scarce, but more information is expected on October 20.
