Damon Albarn says artists ‘should be allowed’ to perform during pandemic

In a new interview with Sky News, Damon Albarn expressed his view that it is necessary for live music to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Gorillaz frontman called for live music’s revival, voicing his concerns that the COVID-19 crisis entailed not only a “medical emergency but an existential one as well.”

While Albarn is appreciative that the virtual foundation of Gorillaz has enabled the band to operate more to custom during these unprecedented times than some of its peers, he fervently noted the pandemic’s impact on the industry at large.

“If people are willing to perform, they should be allowed to. No one should be forced to do anything, but if people are willing then somehow we can make it work so everyone can feel comfortable and participate,” stated Albarn.

The creative process behind Gorillaz’s new project Song Machine: Season One—Strange Timez was also inevitably affected by the lockdown, with the virtual act alternatively working long distance with collaborators like Elton John.
