Study: 87 percent of surveyed musicians say mental health deteriorated during COVID-19 lockdowns

According to a new study, 87 percent of surveyed artists and musicians have said that their mental health has declined due to COVID-19-related lockdowns. Loss of income and inability to perform live are the two prominent factors, according to a new report by Help Musicians, a UK-based charity for musicians of all genres.

The independent charity conducted a survey of about 700 musicians at the start of this year to find out how COVID-19 has affected them. The survey recorded that there was a 65 percent increase in requests for mental health support in the last three months. The survey also found that 96 percent of musicians said they are worried about their finances while seven out of 10 said they fear that they will not be able to hold themselves over financially for the next six months. 91 percent emphasized a lack of certainty about what the future holds.

Over half of the musicians surveyed are no longer making money from music. The charity is calling the findings a “hidden crisis among musicians” with the impact of the pandemic and venue shutdowns as 56 percent are relying on Universal Credit and a quarter said they’re thinking of leaving the music industry for good. Help Musicians Chief Executive James Ainscough stated,

“We can’t sugar coat these findings – we are facing a mental health crisis amongst musicians on an unprecedented scale. Whilst there may be light at the end of the tunnel with a roadmap out of lockdown revealed, there is still substantial uncertainty around how quickly the music industry can recover, plus the catastrophic impact of the Brexit deal on musicians’ ability to tour. After a year of hardship, the ongoing uncertainty for musicians is taking a huge toll on mental health.”

The same charity partnered with Spotify for the Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief project in March as well as have recently expanded its mental health support.

Daft Punk rumored to be involved in Nintendo’s upcoming ‘Splatoon 3’

Daft Punk may have broken up, but the rumor mill persists.

A recent issue of the Japanese gaming magazine CoroCoro has featured Daft Punk in a full-page advertisement for Nintendo‘s upcoming title, Splatoon 3. The ad (seen below), directly references the now defunct duo with an image in the bottom left corner with a headline that says “Around The World,” followed by “Daft Punk Airlines.”

The featured artwork isn’t particularly new, but such a blatant inclusion of the iconic French duo’s name and likeness have led fans to wonder if Daft Punk will be involved in the upcoming game, either through contributions to its soundtrack, or possibly with dedicated skins.

This would not be the first time that the Splatoon series has given a nod to musical greats, as previous content from the franchise has included tributes to both Biggie Smalls and Tupac. For what it’s worth, the reference in CoroCoro may be the extent of the tribute, but has ambiguity ever stopped Daft Punk fans from hoping? Didn’t think so…

Shortage of security staff could put nightclub reopenings under threat

A shortage of security staff could put the re-opening of nightclubs under threat, a new report has revealed.

As stated in The Telegraph, the industry has seen an “exodus” of bouncers in recent months following work restrictions due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. There has also been a significant loss of non-UK staff due to the uncertainty to work permits caused by Brexit.

The Door Security Association has revealed that many nightclubs now risk being unable to open safely as one in six door supervisor positions are in danger of not being filled by June 21.

Last month, the government outlined plans for England to gradually exit lockdown by the end of June, with nightclubs provisionally permitted to reopen from June 21.

At the moment, only 40 per cent of door security positions are filled ahead of this planned re-opening.

The CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, Mike Mill, is now calling for a delay to rules which could see training for licensed door supervisors become more complex and time consuming to help ensure the positions are filled on time.

In a statement, Kill said: “we rely heavily on licensed door supervisors to keep staff and customers safe.

“With the additional responsibility of public health…it is even more important that we remove barriers to ensure that we are able to fulfil the resource requirement.”

Speaking about the road-map to reopening nightclubs to NME earlier this month, Kill said that the impact of the ongoing vaccination programme could also affect the roadmap to nightclubs re-opening by June 21.

“There are caveats around the opening and they’ve cleverly worded it so that June 21 is the earliest,” he said. “I think everyone is aware that could slip without a doubt and most people are planning for just past that date. Everyone is still tentative and pleased they’ve got that date, but aware it could change.

“There is a positivity in ticket sales, but there are challenges and concerns about whether that date is too ambitious. We are waiting to see how things go when schools, workplaces and non-essential retail opens – that will show the impact of vaccination in the real world.”

Kill added: “As we move forward, there will be an impact on transmission and how the rest of the road map could look. If vaccination gives us an environment where we’re ahead of the game, then hopefully we’ll have the same notion for those timelines.

“But people are quite happy with that, given that early estimations were suggested it could be August  and September – it’s lifted people’s spirits.”

Nightclub bosses previously told NME that nightlife will be “decimated” if government support was not given to help the sector.

An All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) of 40 MPs also previously warned of “ghost towns” cropping up across the UK if the government failed to intervene and support the country’s struggling nightlife sector during the pandemic.

Competitors take it in turns playing a song from a list of 20 from their discography, as fans, friends and fellow artists watch on. A winner is later decided by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.

Now, it’s been confirmed that The Isley Brothers are set to go head to head with Earth, Wind & Fire on Easter Sunday (April 4), and there’s a Verzuz rematch scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend (May 29-31).

Last weekend, Wu-Tang Clan MCs Raekwon and Ghostface Killah also went head to head in the first VERZUZ to be streamed through Triller following its recent deal with Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.

Elsewhere, a VERZUZ spokesperson recently confirmed to Billboard that co-founders Swizz Beatz and Timbaland will be doing a battle of their own to celebrate the series’ one-year anniversary coming soon.

Discussing the recent Triller takeover, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland said: “This is a momentous occasion not only for Verzuz and Triller but the music business as a whole. By putting Verzuz in the Triller Network ecosystem and expanding the Verzuz brand to be side by side with the powerful Triller app, we will be able to continue to grow and evolve the music business as a whole, as we have been doing.

“To have partners in Triller who share our vision, specifically to celebrate and elevate the amazing artists who continue to shape culture around the world and give the consumer more direct access, is game changing.”
