The Space Station Week 3: The Hood Internet Returns – Dancing Astronaut

This week on The Space Station, we’re kicking things off with a classic blog format long forgotten — the mash up. Notably, the return of The Hood Internet — now with less DMCA takedowns. Dillon Francis continues his unofficial remix tear with a dub up of Dua Lipa’s “We’re Good” and Wuki flips Van Halen and The Weeknd into a top down summer anthem just in time for the sun to start shining.

Introducing The Space Station, our exclusive Audius playlist focused on exposing new and exciting music from independent artists.

Since 2009, Dancing Astronaut has been sharing music for the love of it. Like many electronic music fans, we grew up on Soundcloud. We got our start sharing mash-ups, bootlegs, and remixes from then unknown artists who were pioneering a new style of sound on the internet. Unfortunately, those days are far behind Soundcloud, but our crate-digging and music-sharing obsession is still going strong. And, if you’re anything like us, you’re sick and tired of seeing the same artists populating every EDM playlist on Spotify.

So where do you turn? The answer is simple; AUDIUS.

Finally, there is new platform that’s as exciting as Soundcloud felt during those early years.

We’re looking for submissions from creators and producers to submit their music to us to be featured on the playlist. No matter the genre, let us hear what you’re making.

Head over to the /r/audius to submit your tracks.

Electro-Acoustic Duo Tryptamine Release ‘Jaguar Priest’ EP

Tryptamine has returned to the release radar with a new 5-track endeavor, Jaguar Priest. The latest EP to come from the duo directly follows the remix pack of their hit ‘Serpent Tomb’, released in December of last year. The pair’s third EP ever, Jaguar Priest is out now and available to listen to across all streaming platforms.

Tryptamine’s new endeavor opens with ‘Balam’, immediately kicking off the EP with various instrumentation alongside a mellow, downtempo beat. The shimmering, electronic production flair is flawlessly complemented by the celestial track’s otherworldly ambiance, in turn crafting a soothing masterpiece that’s replete with raw emotion and an infectious energy. ‘Stelae’ is up next, and prominently boasts the guitar throughout. The hushed vocal enters the space, serving as a prime accompaniment to the soft sonic sensibilities sprinkled throughout. The rhythm entrances with each passing second, ultimately lulling the listener into a contemplative daze. Taking the reins, ‘Skybands’ features a cinematic opening that sets the tone for the rest of the original production to follow. Intoxicatingly cacophonous throughout, seemingly unlike sound effects are paired together to form a harmonious, unexpected blend of noise that leaves a desire for even more audible Tryptamine magic. ‘Cloud Omen’, the EP’s penultimate tune, begins with a distinct radio static sound and eventually flows into a chilled, steady beat. Consistently uplifting, the sprightly track features trip hop inspiration alongside propelling electronic elements. Lastly, ‘Fortuner’ rounds out the 5-track release with various high and low-pitched voices. The sublime effect its frequencies have on the listener produces a wholly calming sense of wonder, leaving one left to ponder their mind aimlessly.

Mick Jagger once pretended to be in a band with pre-fame Jon Bon Jovi

Jon Bon Jovi has recalled encounters he had with David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and Mick Jagger during his pre-fame days.

Appearing on Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt’s Rockonteurs podcast, the Bon Jovi frontman spoke about the time he spent working at The Power Station recording studio in New York when he was just 18 years old.

“They paid me $50 a week to be the gofer and if it was a weekend or a late, late night, I could go in and record,” he remembered.

Bon Jovi went on to reveal that he spotted Bowie and the Queen frontman at the studios one night as they recorded their 1981 collaboration ‘Under Pressure’. “No one believes what I saw,” he said.

Around the same time, he also bumped into The Rolling Stones – whose frontman Mick Jagger pretended to be in a band called The Frogs with the teenage Bon Jovi.

“I’ll never forget this, I was outside paying my cabby… and The Stones got out of whatever car it was they were getting out of,” he explained.

“At the same time, they were going into [The Power Station] studio and a photographer jumps out of a trash bin and the paparazzi starts taking pictures. I swear to god this is true. The Stones, they open up the door of the studio… Wyman, Mick and Keith. They go into the studio.”

He continued: “The photographer is screaming, ‘Mick, Mick, Mick! Give us a picture!’ and I swear to you, he grabs me and these kids and he says, ‘Here’s my new band, The Frogs’ And we took a fucking picture.”

You can listen to the conversation at the 37-minute mark in the podcast above.

Last December, Richie Sambora opened up about his decision to leave Bon Jovi after 30 years.  “I had a lot of conscious work to do around [my personal life],” he said.

Flea says Gang Of Four’s Andy Gill “shaped my approach to music profoundly”

Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ Flea has looked back on his friendship with Andy Gill, saying that he “shaped my aesthetic and approach to music profoundly”.

  • READ MORE: Andy Gill – the NME obituary, 1956-2020: The guitar hero who made radical politics danceable

The bassist teamed up with his RHCP bandmate John Frusciante on ‘The Problem Of Leisure’, a forthcoming tribute album to the late Gang Of Four musician (out May 14). Together the pair recorded a joint rendition of ‘Not Great Men’.

Speaking in a new interview with The Guardian, Flea recalled how Gang Of Four’s debut album ‘Entertainment’ (1979) – on which the aforementioned track features – had “opened my mind to everything”.

Gill, who died last year aged 64, went on to produce the Chili’s self-titled debut album (1984) – a process that was fraught with disagreements. Later, Gill accused the band of “ripping off” a Gang Of Four song.

Back in 2018, however, Gill reached out to Flea to contribute to ‘The Problem Of Leisure’ – which was initially intended to mark the 40th anniversary of ‘Entertainment!’.

“[We] talked about everything, about that remark and why it hurt my feelings – that we had our own thing, but were grateful for the influence he had on us. He said he hadn’t meant it like that,” Flea remembered.

“We talked about the arguments while recording our album and I apologised for anything I did that was offensive and he did, too. At the end, I was able to talk to him on the phone and say, ‘Andy, I love you’.”

Flea added: “I’m so glad I was able to tell him that, and to mend the fence and re-establish a friendship with someone who shaped my aesthetic and approach to music profoundly.”

‘The Problem Of Leisure’ will also contain covers by the likes of IDLES, Warpaint, La Roux, Everything Everything and Gary Numan, as well as a new version of ‘Natural’s Not In It’ by Tom Morello and Serj Tankian.

EDMsauce.com Artist of the Week: Scott the Pisces

London born music producer, songwriter and artist Scott the Pisces has been making waves across the UK and US with his hit debut EP “Ocean Blue”.

An electronic pop, summer inspired project containing 5 tracks, including a song with Canadian Pop star Aleesia.

Poised for a worldwide breakthrough year, Scott the Pisces is an artist, producer and songwriter, born and raised in North West London. Previously under the alias “Spectrum” he accumulated millions of streams across all music platforms, with hits such as “Take You There” featuring Ria Choony. Now looking to recreate himself under the new name, Scott holds no punches with his debut EP.

Ocean Blue, what made you pick that name for the EP?

Initially I wanted to create an EP that was reminiscent of the summer, and one key factor to a great summer is to see that blue ocean on the horizon. Coincidentally the title track which Ashley had written the lyrics to was exactly the type of name I wanted for the project. So I went with it.

“Ocean Blue” is a fusion of five incredibly produced and written pop songs, designed to lift your spirits, reminisce the good times and look to the future with a sense of hope. Encompassing the feel of summer; The EP is nostalgically brilliant, taking inspiration from the early 2000s of Popular music, and blending it with a new electronic take on the sound.

The lead single “Perfect Summer” features the vocals from Canadian Popstar “Aleesia”, who has previously worked with Big Sean & Martin Garrix. The ‘living it up’ formula made famous by the Black Eyed Peas is very present in the track, with the lyrical content primarily being about leading your best life during the summer. With a four to the floor driving beat, chugging guitars, and synthesized melodies, the song is an ode to acts like Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jespsen, who were the stars at the time Scott was growing up. “I produced the song, wrote the lyrics and sang a terrible vocal demo to Aleesia, who to my surprise, absolutely loved it”.

Ashley Alisha features on the title track “Ocean Blue”, a Hip Hop, Electronic and emotional fusion. Ashley Alisha has previously worked with K-Pop stars LOONA & ITZY.

Ria Choony, his longtime collaborator, provides a youthful perspective on “Young & Reckless”. Themes of being young, naive and carefree play throughout both songs, making us all wish we had the chance to go back and do it again.

You produced the entire EP yourself, which songs did you also write the lyrics to?

The first song I wrote was “I Wanna Know”. It was a test to see if I could really write my own lyrics for this EP. RnB for me is a really easy genre for me to write for, vocal riffs and melodies come to me very naturally. I’d say the music of my childhood has a big impact on that. The other two songs I wrote were “Perfect Summer” and “Young & Reckless”. All of which, I produced the music for first. I then wrote the lyrics, and sang really bad vocal demos to send to the artists. It was very embarrassing at first, but when I heard the songs resang I knew it was worth it.

Bethany Davey, now known as Nova May, takes the reins on the 4th single On My Own bringing her beautiful, emotion filled vocals to the table. The song’s dynamic range from a soft slow morning, into a powerful ballad is a brilliant experience to say the least. The song is about letting go of toxic people from your life, realising you are better off alone.

There’s a few songs with a male background vocalist, was that you?

Yes, that was most likely from the original vocal demos. Sometimes when I feel like a lower octave would sound good and doesn’t need to be prominent, I’ll go ahead and do it myself. For the final chorus of “On My Own” with Bethany Davey I felt it was necessary to add a male vocal in the background to give it that sense of being a duet. There’s something about the way some artists like The Chainsmokers use that to create a human connection within a song. On “Young & Reckless” I had a few friends sing in the background for the very last choruses to create a fake crowd situation, like you were experiencing it at a festival.

The final track on the EP titled I Wanna Know features the sensual vocals of K.O. with a RnB twist to close out the project. Like Perfect Summer, and Young & Reckless, I Wanna Know was also written by Scott the Pisces, as well as the entire EP being produced solely by himself. The song is a blend of soulful and what could be seen as the type of chorus you’d expect from an allstar girl group.

What can we expect in the future from Scott the Pisces?

Expect a whole lot more music, spanning multiple genres. Some unlikely collaborations, and hopefully you’ll be seeing my face popping up amongst some of the hottest acts real soon.

Wolf Alice explain the story behind the title of new album ‘Blue Weekend’

Wolf Alice have explained the story behind the title of their upcoming third album ‘Blue Weekend’.

The album, which follows the band’s Mercury Prize-winning second album, ‘Visions Of A Life’, comes out in June via Dirty Hit and was announced last month with the release of first track ‘The Last Man On Earth’.

In a new interview with NME the band opened up on how the album’s title came to be and how they road-tested the record’s material in their own unique way.

During the interview they revealed that the title for the new album came from a cab journey in Belgium where they were recording the album. Vocalist/guitarist Ellie Rowsell suggested to drummer Joel Amey that the band should head to a nearby forest for a day out “on the next blue weekend”.

“Blue is a nice colour, but it also means sad,” Rowsell told NME of the title. “And I often think the weekend is so fun, but lots of drama takes place then so sometimes it’s the catalyst for your downfall.”

Bassist Theo Ellis also revealed that the band tested their new material by playing it over the top of muted film and TV trailers, explaining: “It’s like a litmus test to see if the emotion of the song works.”

Elsewhere in the NME interview, the band spoke out on what needs to be done to ensure that #MeToo is “not just a hashtag” after Rowsell was faced with “a lot of trolls” after she accused Marilyn Manson of filming up her skirt without her consent when they met at a festival.

Discussing what needs to be done in order to move things forward, guitarist Joff Oddie said: “I think stuff like #MeToo’s fantastic as a catalyst and a talking point, but now we need to work out how we shift those cultural norms to make sure that the message is translated to everyone, not just the people who have Twitter accounts and lots of followers.”

Wolf Alice gave new single ‘The Last Man On Earth’ its live debut this month with a stunning performance on Later… with Jools Holland. NME called the comeback single “a majestic change of pace from Britain’s best band” in a five-star review.

‘Blue Weekend’ is released on June 11 via Dirty Hit.
