Tkay Maidza, Aldous Harding and The Breeders share covers of 4AD artists for 40th anniversary compilation

London label 4AD marked its 40th anniversary last year, and to celebrate they’ve announced the career-spanning covers compilation, ‘Bills & Aches & Blues’.

The collection, named after a lyric from Cocteau Twins‘ ‘Cherry Coloured Funk’, sees 18 current 4AD artists cover songs from the label’s illustrious past. They’ve shared the first five songs now as an EP, which you can listen to below.

Tkay Maidza turns Pixies‘ ‘Where Is My Mind?’ into synth boom bap; US Girls’ tames The Birthday Party‘s ‘Junkyard’ with bongos and strings; Aldous Harding croons through Deerhunter‘s ‘Revival’; The Breeders remove the drums from ‘The Dirt Eaters’ by His Name is Alive; and Maria Somerville hollows out the guitars of Air Miami’s ‘Seabird’.

The full ‘Bills & Aches & Blues’ compilation will be released digitally on April 2, with physical vinyl LPS and CDs on July 23 and a deluxe vinyl box following at a later date.

On the forthcoming compilation, Big Thief are also set to cover The Breeders’ ‘Off You’, Dry Cleaning will take on Grimes‘ ‘Oblivion’, SOHN are giving their spin on Tim Buckley‘s ‘Song to the Siren’, and many more. Helado Negro, Future Islands, Jenny Hval, Tune-Yards, Bradford Cox and others all feature on the compilation. A full tracklist is below.

All first year profits of ‘Bills & Aches & Blues’ will go towards the Harmony Project – a Los Angeles-based after-school program that assists communities lacking equitable access to arts or music education.

Paul McCartney teases something with St. Vincent, Beck, Josh Homme and more

Paul McCartney appears to be teasing something with St. Vincent, Beck, Josh Homme and a number of other artists.

This afternoon (March 10) the Beatles legend took to Instagram to share a short video clip that sees handfuls of multi-coloured dice rolled into different positions. In addition to the number three, the dice also feature the names of various artists.

The names listed include St. Vincent, Beck, Josh Homme, Anderson .PaakEd O’Brien, Damon AlbarnPhoebe Bridgers and Blood Orange. Some of the aforementioned artists also shared a similar clip on their own Instagram pages.

You can see the post below:

According to Beatlefan Magazine, the posts are teasing a covers album called ‘IIImagined’ and the artwork will be made up of 12 dice. There is no word on a release date.

“More teases about the upcoming McCartney-related project are leaking out on Spotify and in online forums,” Beatlefan said in a Facebook post, before unveiling what it believes to be the tracklist – see it below.

‘Long Tailed Winter Bird’ by Damon Albarn
‘Find My Way’ by Beck
‘Pretty Boys’ by Khruangbin
‘Women And Wives’ by St. Vincent
‘Lavatory Lil’ by Josh Homme

NME has reached out to representatives for Paul McCartney for comment.

McCartney’s last album was December’s ‘McCartney III’. In a four-star review, NME‘s Mark Beaumont called it “a stellar return to his three-decade-spanning series”.

He added: “If future archaeologists take this three-album series as a significant marker of his solo half-century, they’ll conclude that Paul McCartney never stopped liberating.”

Last month, McCartney announced a career-spanning book about his life through 154 songs from his back catalogue.

‘The Lyrics’, which is due for release on November 2, will recount the musician’s life through his earliest boyhood compositions, songs by The Beatles, Wings and from his lengthy solo career.

Rezz Gives Some Wild Updates On Her Collab With Deadmau5 [VIDEO]

Just two days ago, Rezz announced that she and deadmau5 were finally ready to finish a collaboration, having first teased one all the way back in 2018 (which feels like an eternity ago). Last night, she shared two new previews to the Rezzmau5 collaboration and we’ve gotta say this sounds like an instant winner from both producers.

The clips depict a heavy, amazingly textured, and wild, pounding beat with some great analog synth work and subtle melodies that ties both of their styles together wonderfully. The first preview presents more of the melodic, house side of the track which is more in line with deadmau5’s style, while the second is a gnarly, heavy drop with more midtempo undertones that highlights Rezz’s style. But both of their styles are still recognizable in each section, making this collaboration one that we’re going to be waiting for on the edge of our seats.

Check out both previews below! With how quickly they’re progressing in the studio, depending on label schedules and promo time, we can hopefully expect this one within the next two months. Or, hell, maybe they’ll just pull a “fuck it” and drop it as soon as it’s done. Stay tuned to find out more!

Lil Nas X trolls TikTokkers trying to cancel Eminem

Lil Nas X has dropped a new TikTok video that trolls the platforms users who have been trying to cancel Eminem.

A campaign started last week calling for Eminem to be cancelled because of some of the controversial lyrics found in his catalogue over the years.

A debate then ensued pitting Millennials against Gen Z, with the former group of older Eminem fans largely coming to the rapper’s defence and saying that the younger generation is decades late to being offended by an artist known for controversial statements.

One particular video defending Eminem sees TikTok user @cassiesmith607 call out Gen Z by rapping over the instrumental for Dr. Dre and Em’s 1999 track ‘Forgot About Dre’ – see it below.

Lil Nas X has now got involved sharing a parody of the video, where he appears to mock the opening bars of @cassiesmith607’s video.

“Generation Z wants to cancel Eminem?/ Generation Z wants to cancel Eminem?/ Yeah, listen up, Generation/ Z, you’re a generation of Z/ Z, generation of Z,” he says in the TikTok clip. He then ends the video instead of attempting to recreate the rest of the viral video.

♬ CALL ME BY YOUR NAME BY LIL NAS X – not lil nas x

Last weekend, Eminem took aim at cancel culture with the release of an animated music video for his new track ‘Tone Deaf’.

Taken from the rapper’s latest album, ‘Music To Be Murdered By — Side B’, the Luis Resto and Eminem-produced track also hears him put his controversial past on full display.

On the track’s chorus, Em raps: “I can’t understand a word you say (I’m tone-deaf)/ I think this way I prefer to stay (I’m tone-deaf)/ I won’t stop even when my hair turns grey (I’m tone-deaf)/ ‘Cause they won’t stop until they cancel me.

Meanwhile, Lil Nas X has confirmed the release date for his new single, ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’, for later this month.

Grammys partner with Berklee College and ASU for study on women in music

The Recording Academy announced their intent to partner with Berklee College of Music and Arizona State University to complete a study focused on promoting equal representation of women in music.

Prompting a timely move for International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, the organization’s annual Grammys award ceremony has been criticized over the years for awarding and nominating more men than women. As the 2021 Grammys prepare to air on March 14, the Academy revealed that among the 853 nominees across all 84 categories at this year’s show, only 198 or roughly 23%, identify as women.

The Academy has stated that the lack of female creators in music is “one of the most urgent issues in the industry today,” with a predominant skew towards male nominations in honors across not just performers, but also producers and engineers. Valeisha Butterfield Jones, the Academy’s Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion officer stated,

“Women are key drivers in the economy and across all business and creative sectors in music, globally, yet we reflect 2% of producers and engineers.”

The study is expected to be completed and released by early 2022. The organization says the data it collects “will be utilized to develop and empower the next generation of women music creators.” The Recording Academy plans to double the amount of female nominee voters by 2025; it has reached 33% of its goal with the addition of 831 women to its voting membership.

Groove Armada and The Coral set to play at Kaleidoscope Festival 2021

Groove Armada and The Coral are among the artists who are set to play at the 2021 Kaleidoscope Festival, which will be held in the grounds of London’s Alexandra Palace.

The one-day north London event debuted its first edition in 2018 and had been hoping to return in 2020 before the coronavirus-enforced shutdown of live music effectively cancelled the UK’s summer festival season last year.

The organisers of Kaleidoscope have today (March 10) announced their intention to host the festival again this summer, confirming that Kaleidoscope 2021 is set to take place on July 24.

Live music from the likes of Groove Armada and The Coral will be part of the attractions on the day, as well as a performance from the House Gospel Choir and a DJ set hosted by Norman Jay MBE.

Kaleidoscope 2021

“To say it’s been a tough last year is a massive understatement, but it’s great to have something to look forward to this summer,” Simon Fell, Kaleidoscope director, said about today’s line-up announcement.

“Kaleidoscope will provide everything you’d want from a festival experience, with loads of green space to explore, the Palace and world class music, comedy and entertainment, all here on one in day in London. To have Groove Armada headlining too, is the stuff summer dreams are made of.

“It is part of a packed programme we’re preparing at Ally Pally for when restrictions lift, so come and join the fun.”

Tickets for Kaleidoscope 2021 are on sale now from here.

Groove Armada were recently announced as part of the bill at Camp Bestival, which is aiming to return to Dorset’s Lulworth Castle from July 29-August 1.
