Watch Suede’s Brett Anderson and Nadine Shah perform a powerful cover of Mercury Rev’s ‘Holes’

Suede‘s Brett Anderson and Nadine Shah have teamed up with the Paraorchestra for a one off concert of covers including David Bowie, Echo & The Bunnymen and Mercury Rev.

The nine-track gig, dubbed ‘Death Songbook’, which will be streamed by BBC Cymru as part of GŴYL 2021 this weekend, also features Portishead‘s Adrian Utley on guitar and Seb Rochford from Sons of Kemet on drums.

The acoustic/electric set was recorded in a COVID-safe environment in January on the largest of Wales Millennium Centre’s stages and featured tracks by Suede along with Bowie’s cover of Jacques Brel’s ‘My Death’ and Echo And The Bunnymen’s ‘The Killing Moon’.

You can view a performance of Mercury Rev’s ‘Holes’ and the full setlist below.

‘Death Songbook’ will go out 3.30pm GMT on Saturday and will be available for a total of 37 days here.

“This was such a joyous project to happen amidst the gloom of January. I’d loved Nadine’s work since I heard ‘Fool’ and she and I had spoken about doing something together for ages as had me and [composer] Charles [Hazlewood] who I had also greatly admired from afar,” said Anderson.

“For this all to happen against the odds with those wonderful musicians from Paraorchestra, plus the talents of Adrian Utley and Seb Rochford, was just so lovely.”

The full set list is:

‘The Killing Moon’ – Echo and the Bunnymen
‘Unsung’ – Brett Anderson
‘Nightporter’ – Japan
‘The End of the World’ – Skeeter Davis
‘He’s Dead’ – Suede
‘Wonderful Life’ – BLACK
‘The Next Life’ – Suede
‘Holes’ – Mercury Rev
‘My Death’ – Jacqueline Brel (David Bowie version)

Meanwhile, Suede recently postponed their ‘Coming Up’ anniversary tour, with the UK dates now set to take place in November.

Back in November the band called on their fans to submit voice recordings for their next record, detailing a list of instructions that included singing and shouting “along when we ask you to”.

“Everything you send in will be gratefully received. If you can do two or even three recordings, that would be even better,” the band further explained.

Blossoms reschedule their UK tour to August and September 2021

Blossoms have rescheduled their forthcoming UK tour to August and September 2021.

The band’s live dates were originally set to take place in March 2020, but the coronavirus outbreak in the UK forced those shows to initially be moved to August. The subsequent live music shutdown, however, prompted the second postponement of those dates in July as the gigs were then moved to this month and April.

Following the UK government’s announcement last week of its ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown – which could see a total lifting of restrictions by June 21 at the very earliest – Blossoms have now set their sights on going through with the tour in August and September instead.

“We’re very sorry to have to once again move our forthcoming UK tour dates,” Blossoms said in a statement about this latest postponement of their touring plans.

“However, following last week’s government announcement, we’re very excited to be able to reschedule these shows into August and September 2021. All of your tickets will remain valid for these new dates and we can’t wait to see and perform for you later this year.”

Wu-Tang Clan announce new photography book encased in 400-pound chamber

Wu-Tang Clan have announced their new photobook Wu-Tang Clan: Legacy, which will be strictly limited to 36 copies – each of which will be encased in its very own bronze-encrusted steel chamber.

The pioneering hip-hop group say that their latest project will be the “the biggest and rarest book in the history of hip-hop”.

Wu-Tang Clan: Legacy is set to feature “rare and unseen images of the band” to offer “a snapshot of Wu-Tang history in the making, providing a unique glimpse into the origins of the biggest hip-hop crew of all time”.

Strictly limited to just 36 copies – a numeric nod to the title of their 1993 debut album ‘Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’ – each copy of the photobook will be signed, dated and numbered with a certificate of authenticity.

Each copy will also be encased in its own 400-pound (181KG) bronze-encrusted black steel chamber, which has been designed by the sculptor Gethin Jones.

“Inspired by the ancient past and the bronze ritual bowls of the Zhou Dynasty, whose first ruler was King Wu-Wang, the chambers consist of Spun Mild Steel bowls while the raised ridges, base and logo are furnished in solid brushed brass,” a description adds about the construction and design of the special chambers.

“From conception to the present day, this is the story of the undisputed greatest hip-hop group of all time being unveiled through rare and never before seen photos,” John ‘Mook’ Gibbons, CEO of Wu-Tang Clan Management, said in a statement about the photobook.

Fans who wish to be in with a chance of buying Wu-Tang Clan: Legacy can sign up here for priority access to the upcoming sale. A release date has yet to be confirmed.

Earlier this week it was announced that Wu-Tang’s Ghostface Killah and Raekwon are set to take each other on in a forthcoming Verzuz battle.

SoundCloud becomes first streaming platform to embrace fan-powered royalties – Dancing Astronaut

SoundCloud has introduced “fan-powered royalties,” a new strategy that will revamp the way the streaming platform distributes money to its artists. The fan-powered royalty model of payouts is driven directly by an artist’s fan base. With this move, each listener’s subscription or advertising revenue is distributed among the artists that they listen to (rather than their streams being pooled). This move—the first of its kind in the music streaming industry—is expected to benefit rising independent artists.

SoundCloud CEO Michael Weissman spoke about the platform’s decision to restructure its payment model in an official release, stating,

“Many in the industry have wanted this for years. We are excited to be the ones to bring this to market to better support independent artists. SoundCloud is uniquely positioned to offer this transformative new model due to the powerful connection between artists and fans that takes place on our platform.” He continues, “The launch of fan-powered royalties represents a significant move in SoundCloud’s strategic direction to elevate, grow and create new opportunities directly with independent artists.”

SoundCloud has launched fan-powered royalties in the hope that this alternative to stream pooling will ‘level the playing field” between emerging and established artists. This strategy is also thought to empower listeners to support their favorite artists through streaming their music, now that there is a direct connection between streaming and an artist’s payout.

Adam Levine says he feels like “there aren’t any bands any more”

Adam Levine has said in a new interview that he is disappointed that there “aren’t any bands any more”.

The Maroon 5 frontman was speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe this week following the arrival of the band’s new collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, ‘Beautiful Mistakes’.

Levine spoke in the interview about Maroon 5’s breakthrough in 2002 with their debut album ‘Songs About Jane’, telling Lowe that he had been re-watching old music videos from that era with his daughter.

“It’s funny how you go back and re-watch like these old videos, and listen to these old songs, and I’ve been playing her a lot of Avril Lavigne records. Like, dude, ‘I’m With You’ is like — it’s, yeah, that gives you tears,” he said.

“It’s crazy, because you don’t remember it in the same way, because you took it for granted, because it was like when you were growing up, and it was just part of what you had on the radio. But there’s some really great songs that I didn’t understand how good they were back then.”

Levine then said he remembers how “when the first Maroon 5 album came out there were still other bands”, adding: “I feel like there aren’t any bands any more, you know?”

“That’s the thing that makes me kind of sad, is that there were just bands,” he continued. “There’s no bands any more, and I feel like they’re a dying breed. And so I kind of, in a weird way, as far as … I mean, there still are plenty of bands, and maybe they’re not in the limelight quite as much, or in the pop limelight, but I wish there could be more of those around.”

In response to Levine’s comments, Garbage‘s Twitter accounted tweeted: “What are we Adam Levine? CATS?!?!?”

Back in January, Levine teamed up with Jason Derulo for the single ‘Lifestyle’.

Stream ‘Musician,’ Porter Robinson’s final ‘Nurture’ pre-album single – Dancing Astronaut Stream ‘Musician,’ Porter Robinson’s final ‘Nurture’ pre-album single

With its predecessor, Worlds, having been released seven long years prior, it’s safe to say that fans have been waiting for Porter Robinson‘s sophomore album with bated breath. That wait is nearly over though, as Robinson himself recently confirmed Nurture‘s upcoming release date of April 23. The light at the end of the tunnel feels even closer today, however, with the release of the forthcoming album’s final single, “Musician.”

Robinson has always been one to pour his heart into his productions, but if the singles leading up to Nurture‘s release are any indication, his musical expression is only growing more vibrant. The new single continues this trend with a trifecta of self-performed vocals, colorful and candy-coated melodies, and production value that is truly second to none. Accompanied by a fully animated music video, “Musician” dons the immersive artistic aesthetic that has further defined Robinson’s image.
