A documentary about The Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show is on the way

A documentary chronicling The Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show is in the works, US network Showtime has confirmed.

The Canadian musician performed at the NFL event last weekend (February 7), becoming the first artist from his home country to perform solo on the prestigious stage.

A film about his performance is set to arrive on TV screens later this year. THE SHOW will be produced by Super Bowl sponsor Pepsi’s in-house content studio, alongside production company Boardwalk Pictures. It will be directed by Emmy-nominated director Nadia Hallgren.

THE SHOW is said to have a run-time of 90 minutes and will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the production of this year’s halftime show.

Following The Weeknd’s performance in Tampa, Florida last weekend, sales of his music rose by 385 percent in the US. According to MRC data, on the day of the show, tracks and albums from across his back catalogue sold 36,500 copies compared to 7,500 copies the previous day.

Of the increased total sales, 29 percent were made up by The Weeknd’s 2019 single ‘Blinding Lights’, which he performed as the final track in his set. It sold 10,000 copies alone, up from 2,000 sales the day before.

The Weeknd has also released a new greatest hits compilation called ‘The Highlights’ to tie in with the halftime show, which saw him play a medley of hits from across his career so far.

Meanwhile, the star has also announced details of his UK and European ‘After Hours’ tour for 2022. The Weeknd will bring the tour to the UK in October, with five dates at the O2 announced alongside areas shows in five other cities.

Matisse & Sadko realign with STMPD RCRDS for their Tomorrowland NYE ID, ‘Meant To Be’ – Dancing Astronaut Matisse & Sadko realign with STMPD RCRDS for their Tomorrowland NYE ID, ‘Meant To Be’

Matisse & Sadko broadcasted that they’d be publishing monthly wins on the STMPD RCRDS calendar beginning in February in an exclusive one-on-one with Dancing Astronaut, and they’re now cashing in on that pledge. Presented as the maiden ID to Martin Garrix’s set at Tomorrowland’s New Year’s Eve virtual celebration, “Meant To Be” has turned itself in as Matisse & Sadko’s first impression on the new year.

If “Meant To Be” presents any sort of familiarity beyond its end-of-2020 introduction, it’s because the single has actually been four years in the making. Originally briefly crowd-tested in an edit during Matisse & Sadko’s post at the STMPD RCRDS stage at Tomorrowland in 2018, and then reacquainted with the duo’s live sets in the label boss’ THE ETHER spectacular at ADE the year after, “Meant To Be” has at long last reached its one hundred percent completion rate. Drawing inspiration from the 1990s era of French electronic, Matisse & Sadko shower their idiomatic touch with a downpour of nostalgic house synths along with a welcomed addition of vocals to the initially instrumental-only track for a bright entry to their cosmic release slate in 2021.

Robin Thicke says he’ll “never make” a music video like ‘Blurred Lines’ again

Robin Thicke has looked back on the controversial music video for his song ‘Blurred Lines’, admitting he will “never make” one like it again.

‘Blurred Lines’, which saw Thicke collaborate with Pharrell Williams and T.I., was widely criticised following its 2013 release with its lyrics and accompanying music video accused of perpetuating misogyny, male chauvinism and a culture of date rape.

As The Independent reports, the clip was branded as “kind of rapey” by The Daily Beast’s Tricia Romano upon its release.

Speaking in a new interview with the New York Post, Thicke said: “I had lost perspective on my personal life and my music and what was appropriate… and why I was doing it.”

He added: “We had no negative intentions when we made the record, when we made the video. But then it did open up a conversation that needed to be had. And it doesn’t matter what your intentions were when you wrote the song… the people were being negatively affected by it.

“And I think now, obviously, culture, society has moved into a completely different place. You won’t see me making any videos like that ever again.”

While distancing himself from the video, Thicke recently defended the track itself, claiming that his original intention for the track was to “get [everybody] up and dancing”.

“Well, really, I never saw it that way when I sang it or performed it,” he told Zane Lowe.

“Usually, the first piece, when it goes, ‘Bum, bum, bum, everybody get up,’ the crowd goes crazy,” he said about his experiences of playing the track live. “Even people who aren’t big fans of mine, that’s the only [song] they know.”

The track was also the subject of a major lawsuit from the estate of the late Marvin Gaye, which successfully sued for copyright infringement in 2015 after ‘Blurred Lines’ was found by a federal jury to share similarities to Gaye’s 1977 song ‘Got To Give It Up’.

The late musician was awarded with a posthumous songwriting credit for ‘Blurred Lines’, and Thicke and Williams were ordered to pay $5million (£3.6million) to Gaye’s estate in 2018.

The Prodigy’s documentary is in the works – Dancing Astronaut The Prodigy’s documentary is in the works

Legendary electronic giants, The Prodigy, have begun work on their forthcoming documentary, The Prodigy. Produced by founding band members Maxim and Liam Howlett as well as Pulse Films, the project promises high expectations, being held in outstanding hands. Pulse Films’s production resume notably points to Beastie Boys Story in addition to British drama series Gang’s Of London.

The film will include live and archival footage, animation, and first-hand testimonies, said to tell “the raw, uncompromising and emotional story of a gang of young outlaws from Essex who came together in the vortex of the late ’80s UK rave scene.”

The film is dedicated to the late and great band frontman, Keith Flint, who devastatingly took his own life in March of 2019. Speaking in regards to the endeavor, Maxim and Howlett explained in detail,

“…A story of brothers on a mission to make noise, to ignite the people’s soul and blow-up sound systems worldwide, that’s fucking what. This film will be made with the same integrity that our music: uncompromising, raw and honest. This one’s for Keef!”

The film is meant to be as abrasive and unyielding as the band. Director Paul Dugdale—also responsible for concert documentary films from the likes of Adele, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, and more—said of the upcoming film,

“We want the viewers to leave the cinema like they’ve just stepped off a roller-coaster.”

Production of The Prodigy’s documentary sets into motion this coming spring, but until then the electronic masterminds have announced their return to the studio.

Bruce Springsteen “drank tequila shots and got on motorbike” before drink-driving arrest

Bruce Springsteen drank a shot of tequila and got on his motorbike before he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, police have claimed.

It was confirmed earlier this week that the rock icon is facing drink-driving charges after he was arrested at New Jersey’s Gateway National Recreation Area in November.

According to papers filed in federal court, Springsteen told a police officer he had consumed two shots in 20 minutes, but refused to take a breath test.

Delivering a statement of probable cause, the arresting officer said Springsteen “smelt strongly of alcohol” and had glassy eyes”.

A bottle of Patron tequila was also said to be “completely empty”, the officer said.

During a field sobriety test, the musician was said to be “visibly swaying back and forth” and also “took 45 total steps during the walk and turn instead of the instructed 18”.

Springsteen was cited for DWI, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area. He will appear in court sometime in the coming weeks.

However, a source familiar with the case also told the Asbury Park Press that Springsteen’s blood alcohol content was .02, a quarter of the legal limit – although this is yet to be confirmed.

On the back of the arrest Jeep has pulled its Super Bowl ad, which starred Springsteen, from YouTube.

“It would be inappropriate for us to comment on the details of a matter we have only read about and we cannot substantiate,” a spokesperson for Jeep told Rolling Stone.

Last month, Springsteen was among the performers who took part in the Celebrating America TV special to honour Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration.

House delegate Stacey Plaskett quotes Run The Jewels and GZA during Trump impeachment trial

US House of Representatives delegate Stacey Plaskett quoted lyrics from songs by both Run The Jewels and Wu-Tang Clan‘s GZA this week while speaking at Donald Trump‘s impeachment trial.

Plaskett, a Democrat who represents the US Virgin Islands’ at-large congressional district, is one of the nine House impeachment managers who are outlining the case against the former US President during his ongoing trial in the Senate.

Addressing Senators this week, Plaskett spoke out against Trump in a speech where she quoted lines from Run The Jewels’ ‘Early’ (“truth is truth, whether denied or not”) and GZA’s ‘Breaker, Breaker’ (“the truth is usually seen and rarely heard”).

Plaskett confirmed her lyrical nods in a tweet overnight – you can watch a clip from her speech above.

Run The Jewels’ El-P responded to being quoted by Plaskett in a series of social media posts which you can see below, writing: “Remember kids: smoke a whole hell of a lot of weed and maybe one day you too can, like me, write something that ends up being quoted during an impeachment.”

GZA also responded to being quoted by Plaskett by sharing her tweet and tagging both Run The Jewels and Killer Mike.

Trump could be barred from running for President again if he is convicted at his impeachment trial, although that outcome looks unlikely given that a two-thirds majority will be required to convict Trump in the evenly split 100-seat Senate.

An acquittal looks far more likely, given that the vast majority of Republican senators have remained loyal to the former president so far.

Earlier this month Killer Mike was named on a new advisory board in the US which has been set up to help support artists hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
