Shambhala Campground Opens To Families This Spring

Shambhala has already (tentatively) announced its festival dates for 2021: August 20-23. It will depend on local and federal regulations whether those dates still go ahead as planned, but with vaccines already rolling out, a late-summer festival is not entirely out of the question.

While a lineup is still yet to be announced, Shambhala has other exciting news on the horizon. The Salmo River Ranch Campground will be opened up to families beginning this spring. On their website, Shambhala explains:

“The campground will be open this spring and we would like to invite the farmily to come back to the place we all love for a camping trip. We have all missed each other and now we have a new way to reunite with the Shambhala family. For you, this might also be an opportunity to bring your children or loved ones that may have been hearing about the farm for years but haven’t come to the festival.”

According to the website, the campground will be found on a newly-developed part of the farm that spans 30 acres with “riverfront access, old-growth forest and lots of shade.”

A team is still needed to help operate the campground, including hosts, equipment operators, and builders. Those interested can apply at [email protected]. Work will begin early April with goals to open by to be ready to open by May 21. The campground will run until at least Labor Day weekend.

Saint Punk unleashes gritty house number on Monstercat: Uncaged, ‘Empty Bed’ – Dancing Astronaut

Saint Punk is well on his way to becoming a household name in the electronic music scene. The producer’s signature grunge-house sound has been making waves, landing him official releases on Ookay‘s imprint The Woodwerk and Jauz‘s label Bite This!, among others. Now, further expanding his house-fueled repertoire, Saint Punk has taken to leading Canadian label Monstercat to unleash a gritty house number on their Uncaged imprint.

Saint Punk’s newest single “Empty Bed” sees the producer work with full vocals for the first time, which tell the story of a lover struggling with waking up in an empty bed as an ominous four-on-the-floor beat progresses towards a quick buildup. It gives way to a bass synth reflective of the signature sound that Saint Punk has been developing over the course of his discography. Speaking on the release, Saint Punk said,

“This record is something new for me. It’s my first song with a full vocal throughout. There’s a lot you can say with a mostly instrumental track, but sometimes there’s so much more to say. There’s strong emotions in this, but it still feels 100 percent like me.”

MPs to debate petition calling for EU-wide visa-free work permits for musicians and crew

MPs are set to debate the widely shared petition which is calling for visa-free work permits across Europe for UK touring musicians and their crew following Brexit.

The UK Government has come in for heavy criticism since the UK officially left the EU earlier this month over the Brexit deal’s lack of support for touring musicians, specifically in terms of the failure to implement visa-free travel in Europe for British musicians and their crew.

The petition was started last month ahead of the end of the Brexit transition period, and it has since amassed over 280,000 signatures.

It will now be debated during a special virtual hearing of MPs, with proceedings taking place online rather than in parliament due to the coronavirus pandemic. MPs will debate the touring musicians’ petition from 4.30pm on February 8, with the session set to last for 90 minutes and be broadcast to the public live on parliamentlive.tv and on YouTube.

Catherine McKinnell MP, Chair of the Petitions Committee, will open the session, with Caroline Dinenage MP, Minister for Digital and Culture, responding.

“I’m delighted we have been able to schedule two e-petition sessions, where Members from across the House, including those self-isolating and shielding, will be able to scrutinise the Government directly on issues raised by petitioners,” McKinnell said in a statement.

“As was the case when Westminster Hall was closed due to Covid-19 last year, we have had to innovate to find ways to hold the Government to account, and crucially to voice the concerns of petitioners in the House of Commons, while our usual debates cannot be held.

“As these petitions demonstrate, there are important issues affecting hundreds of thousands of people that are being missed. Their calls for help and support must be heard.”

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden told NME earlier this month that the EU was to blame for not permitting visa-free travel for artists, but the EU subsequently hit back by denying claims that they had rejected the UK’s “ambitious proposals” and saying that they had in fact offered the UK 90 days of visa-free travel – but the UK responded with their own proposal of just 30 days.

Despite widespread anger from artists and music industry bosses calling on the government to “take this seriously and fix it”, ministers rejected the idea last week – insisting that “taking back control” of the UK’s borders is their priority and that talks would only resume if Brussels “changes its mind”.

Last week an open letter signed by over 100 musicians, including the likes of Elton John, Liam Gallagher and Ed Sheeran, was published, criticising the government for their failure to support touring musicians in the Brexit deal.

Good Morning Mix: Venture back to Indio Valley for Dillon Francis’ Coachella 2019 set – Dancing Astronaut

Shortly before the November 2019 dispersal of Dillon Francis‘ lauded Magic Is Real mixtape, the IDGAFOS figurehead would upload his Coachella 2019 set to YouTube, giving all streamers—even those not previously in attendance—something to buzz about. Over the past decade, the Los Angeles native has become a leading attraction of the Indio Valley affair, and with his festival debut able to be traced back to 2013, in the time leading up to the 2019 event, Francis was eyeing his milestone fourth Coachella appearance. As to be expected, it did not disappoint.

With Coachella sets from 2013, 2014, and 2017 in his back pocket, Francis stepped up to the decks to lace his animated primetime set with fan-favorite originals and remixes as well as some deeper cuts from his moombahton catalog. Halfway through the performance, Francis ushered lovelytheband onstage to perform their collaborative single, “Change Your Mind,” and later closed the set by inviting DJ Snake to join him for a rendition of “Get Low.”

Though the fate of Coachella’s 2021 iteration may be suspended in uncertainty at present, fortunately, Francis’ Coachella 2019 is available in its entirety below, and that’s exactly where we’re going this morning.

Dennis Sheperd Delivers Euphoric 3rd Studio Album, ‘Find The Sunrise’

A fair amount is made in music’s realm of ‘the personal album’. In truth, though all artist albums are inherently personal – the only distinction is to what degree. By his own acknowledgement, Dennis wrote his third long-form predominantly for fans, but also – in part – for himself. Starting the year 2019 in what he described as “a very dark place”, he utilised ‘Find The Sunrise’s process as a cathartic tool of articulation, and one with which to face a personal demon or two.

As he channelled his experiences into it, striking a reflective balance between the-then-and-the-now became pivotal to its composition. Over the album’s passage, both life’s lifts & dips are explored, always beautifully, regularly with heart-on-sleeve honesty and with an eloquence unmistakably born of intelligent music-making.

Some artists rely solely on instruments to carry their message, whilst others mix the vocal with the vocal-free. Dennis though sees the power of voice and – even more critically – lyric as the surest way to express an album’s message. To that end pretty much every one of its fifteen strong tracks features – in one form or another – a vocal aspect. To achieve that dimension he marshalled an extraordinary assembly of singers, songwriters and collaborators. Katty Heath, Eric Lumiere, Joston, Sarah Russell, Chloe Kay, EKE and Sean Ryan are just some of those that comprise its supremely talented ensemble cast.

While the songs’ lyrics delve profoundly into their subject matters, often merely a glance at their titles is enough to draw insight. ‘When Our Worlds Collide’, ‘When I’m Alone’, ‘Miss You’, ‘Losing My Mind’ and others address a range of interrelated themes with which Dennis identifies. From isolation, disconnection, separation and forfeiture of relationship, they are ones many will also find familiar.

Contrastingly other tracks (‘I Can Feel’, ‘Imagination’ & ‘We Are One’ to name but three) musically reflect Dennis’ current end-of-the-tunnel, brighter-days perspective. Tonally, it probably telegraphs much that he chose ‘Find The Sunrise’ to frontend the album – the Katty Heath-sung title track a radiantly hopeful beacon to the emotionally at sea. While the album is clear of theme, is also contains tracks whose implications are more opaque and open to interpretation. ‘Playing With Fire’ and (its thematic brother) ‘Burning Flame’ Dennis clarifies were inspired by some 2020 conquering of fears (not least his acute vertigo). ‘Hamsa’s looping vocal chant, the anthemic floor-roar of ‘South East Love’ and the sax-maxed ‘Omid’ leave their messages deliberately indistinct, allowing listeners to draw their own conclusions.

On concluding production of ‘Find The Sunrise’, Dennis remarked: “This album will always have a very special place in my heart. By producing it, I have not only processed certain developments in my life but have also used lockdown’s time in the best possible way. I believe this album contains some of the finest music I have ever written! I hope fans enjoy it every bit as much as I do.”

Pop Smoke set to posthumously feature on Fredo’s new album

Pop Smoke is set to posthumously feature on Fredo‘s forthcoming new album ‘Money Can’t Buy Happiness’.

Announced last week, the record is set to be released by the west London rapper on Friday (January 29).

Sharing more details about ‘Money Can’t Buy Happiness’ on Sunday (January 24), Fredo announced the tracklist for the album and confirmed that a posthumous Smoke feature will be heard on the track ‘Burner On Deck’. Young Adz will also feature on that song.

Elsewhere on the album Summer Walker will guest on ‘Ready’, while Dave will feature on the track ‘Money Talks’. You can see a trailer for ‘Money Can’t Buy Happiness’ and the tracklist in the below Instagram post.

“I want to apologise for the wait,” Fredo said in a statement about his album. “I had a whole different style album that didn’t really mean anything to me. Meanwhile a lot was going on in life that I was angry and confused about. I really thought that once you have money you can’t not be happy inside even if stuff’s going on but it’s not like that. I felt like the project I was working on before was me but doesn’t really explain me.

“I don’t want people thinking that certain things I rap about are important or the key of life because they’re not. Most things I rap about are just what I been through or reality for me and my friends.”

Last week saw the release of  latest trailer for the film Boogie, which stars Pop Smoke in a role filmed before his death.

Listen to Spencer Brown’s remix of Above & Beyond’s ‘Sun In Your Eyes’ – Dancing Astronaut

Above & Beyond have shared the long-awaited Spencer Brown remix of their track “Sun In Your Eyes.” Originally released on Above & Beyond’s 2011 Group Therapy album, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, the track was remastered for the UK trio’s 2019 ambient album, Flow State.

Although fans have coveted the remix for years, with Brown playing the unreleased track exclusively during live performances, the release was never expected to officially surface as noted by Brown himself. Now, the surprise release arrives not only as a special gift to listeners, but also as the first remix of the nearly decade-old song to be officially released as a single.

On the release, Brown writes,

“Come 2021, we’re all feeling a bit down. To give us all a bit of a lift, it felt like an appropriate time to release the record…I hope it brings light in any darkness you may be feeling right now.”

New Eddie Van Halen mural set to be unveiled to mark late guitarist’s birthday

A new mural honouring Eddie Van Halen is set to be unveiled today (January 26) to mark what would’ve been the late guitarist’s 66th birthday.

This latest tribute to Van Halen follows on from his passing in October following a battle with throat cancer.

LA artist Robert Vargas is the creator of the mural, which has been completed ahead of Van Halen’s birthday today. Located on the outside wall of Guitar Center’s Sunset Boulevard store in Hollywood, Vargas’ “Long Live The King” artwork depicts Van Halen playing his guitar.

“I am beyond excited to create this mural of one of my all-time creative heroes, @eddievanhalen,” Vargas said on Instagram earlier this month about the commission. “This mural is truly for the fans and a celebration of my favourite rock band, @vanhalen’s legacy.”

Vargas is set to officially unveil his Van Halen tribute, “Long Live The King”, later today.

Earlier this month, a new range of EVH guitars was announced in honour of the late guitarist.

In a statement announcing the new guitars, EVH spoke of Van Halen’s influence: “The industry saw record guitar-playing interest in 2020 but also sadly said goodbye to one of the most innovative and influential players of its time.

“Eddie Van Halen’s singularly inventive style inspired an entire generation of players. He innovated not only in how he played but what he played and what he played through by creating some of the greatest guitars and amps the world has seen and heard.”
