3LAU and Funkin Matt come together for dance-pop one-off ‘Everything’ featuring Frawley – Dancing Astronaut

If there is one thing 3LAU has mastered, it is pairing a groovy dance note progression with a polarizing, pop-leaning vocal, and the producer has done it once again in the form of “Everything” alongside Funkin Matt. 3LAU announced the single earlier in 2021 alongside his Bold.org partnership, which will award a $10,000 “Everything” scholarship to an American student facing student loan debt.

The Frawley feature is the producer’s first output in 2021, and he has released the track alongside an accompanying NFT, which means fans can bid on the ability to own the accompanying digital art piece. “Everything” is out now via 3LAU’s not-for-profit label, Blume.

Pendulum drummer KJ Sawka debuts new project with remix of BT’s ‘The War’

Pendulum drummer and Destroid member KJ Sawka ventures into uncharted territory with the official debut of his new project, The Private Language. The first taste of the duo group, comprised of Sawka and collaborator Blake Lewis, brings forth their remix of BT and Iraina Mancini’s “The War.”

In the works for over a year, the band combines the forces of both musicians for a “dreamy landscape saturated with organic percussion, indie guitars, and lush vocal melodies.” The Private Language’s first release arrives packaged on a four-track remix EP of the 2020 released single alongside remixes from Wayfloe, Tony Awake, and Johnny Frizz. Incorporating dewy instrumentation spotlighted by crisp percussion and ruminative guitar, Sawka and Lewis show off clean production and magnetic drive as they transform the genre-morphing original into a lively vocal-centric drum ‘n’ bass heater.

YVES V POWERS INTO 2021 WITH THE DAZZLING ‘ECHO’

Belgium’s Yves V is one of the most dazzling dance music exports to emerge from the country in recent memory. From collaborations with Afrojack, Laidback Luke, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, as well as Sam Feldt, Florian Picasso, and more across the past decade, over to a stellar 2020 that saw him propel forth like never before, he racked up over 135 million streams across 96 countries thanks to huge hits including ‘We Got That Cool’ and ‘Not So Bad’, as Yves V now springboards into 2021 with new release ‘Echo’.

Working with the platinum-awarded German duo behind 2020’s ‘Head Shoulders Knees & Toes’, Quarterhead, on the track behind the scenes, Yves brings his unique effervescence and stylistic workings to the production of ‘Echo’ with ease, drawing on emotion, bringing swelling chords and sweeping statements of genre-straddling electronics to the fore. “Let go, I don’t wanna let go/ Cos wherever I go/ I can hear your echo” the breath-taking vocal muses in to commence proceedings, as a tinkering house-leaning beat snaps in with a formation that, come the breakdown, pushes to deeper reaches with its sound to bring in the affectional bliss. Enlisting radio-ready synths with a raw vocal that merges with swathes of bass that elevate the elements of the release across its individual ingredients, Yves V gets set to usher in the soundtrack of your new year in style!

PRS Foundation launches Power Up initiative to tackle anti-Black racism in music

PRS Foundation has announced the launch of Power Up, a new initiative designed to tackle anti-Black racism and disparities within the music industry.

The programme, which launched today (January 25), has been shaped by over 80 Black music professionals and aims to support 40 Black music creators and industry figures a year through grants and industry-wide support.

Power Up was set up and will be managed by PRS Foundation in partnership with YouTube Music, Beggars group and the Black Music Coalition. Supporters include the Association of Independent Music (AIM), the BPI, the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), The Ivors Academy, the Music Managers Forum (MMF), the Music Publishers Association (MPA), the Music Producers Guild (MPG), the Musicians’ Union, PPL, PRS for Music and the PRS Members’ Fund.

The initiative aims to break down barriers for Black artists and industry professionals to create a fairer and more equitable music industry. It is also seeking to help achieve better representation in all sectors of the UK music industry and to amplify the work of Black creators and industry figures through both the Power Up Participant Programme and the Power Up Movement.

The Power Up Participant Programme is described as a long-term network that will address barriers facing 40 participants each year – 20 Black music creators and 20 Black executives and industry professionals.

Those taking part in the programme will be at crucial stages in their careers and can be working in any genre or sub-sector. They will be given grant support of up to £15,000, marketing support, as well as support from partners and mentoring.

The Power Up Movement, meanwhile, will be run in alliance with the Black Music Coalition and will set targets and apply pressure to the UK music industry to increase Black representation and empower and advocate for Black talent and industry professionals. It hopes these moves will help influence industry policy and shape the future of music.

The Power Up initiative is led by a group dubbed the Executive Steering Committee, including artist manager Keith Harris OBE, 0207 Def Jam’s A&R Director Char Grant, Sony Music’s Director Of Africa Taponeswa Mavunga, and more.

“Last year, in the wake of the George Floyd episode, so much was promised in terms of shifting the dial to improve the situation for minorities in the music industry,” Harris said. “So little has so far been delivered. Power Up is an important step towards that delivery.”

Ambassadors for Power Up include Kano, DJ Target, singer-songwriter and former Mis-Teeq member Sabrina Washington, Disturbing London founder Dumi Oburota, Ray BLK, and LinkUp TV founder Rashid Kasiyre.

Of the initiative, Kasirye said: “As a Black professional in the UK Music & Media industry, I am well aware of the many challenges that people like me face and feel. So I am happy to be supporting Power Up as an ambassador to create positive change for Black music creators and professionals within the industry as a whole.”

Washington said being involved in the Power Up programme was “an absolute honour”. “Having been in the music industry for over 20 years, I truly believe the future is now and Power Up will be at the forefront of inspiring a whole new generation of artists,” she continued.

Ray BLK, meanwhile, said she was “delighted and so proud” to be an ambassador and to “lend my support and voice for the initiative to help make the change the industry so desperately needs”.

An open call for applicants for the first year of Power Up will be announced “in the coming weeks”. Members of the Year One Power Up Participant network will be selected and announced in the spring.

The programme follows a new bursary programme called Rip It Up launching last week (January 18). It aims to provide a platform and direction for the next generation of Black, Asian and diverse musical talent.

Meanwhile, pioneering hip-hop label Big Dada announced earlier today it will relaunch as a label run by and for Black, POC and Minority Ethnic staff and artists.

Never-before-seen footage from Daft Punk’s Lollapalooza 2007 set has surfaced [Watch] – Dancing Astronaut

New, unseen Daft Punk footage is like lightning; it doesn’t strike twice, and electronic aficionados are well-apprised of its rarity. That’s precisely why never-before-seen video from Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter‘s set at Lollapalooza‘s 2007 iteration in Grant Park, Chicago is sending shock waves through the dance scene. The live mixed video from the festival stint surfaced on YouTube user Johnny Airbag’s channel on January 22.

The most faithful of Daft Punk’s followers will recall Johnny Airbag as the uploader of previously unseen footage from Daft Punk’s 2007 Vegoose Festival in Las Vegas. Though that video, which emerged in August of 2020, has since been removed from the streaming platform, its absence is almost inconsequential considering the fresh set of footage, now available below.

Billy Bragg calls Glastonbury cancellation “a bit of a shock”

Billy Bragg has responded to the cancellation of Glastonbury 2021, calling it “a bit of a shock”.

The Somerset festival was cancelled for the second year in a row last week (January 21) because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast today (January 25), Bragg – a Glastonbury veteran and organiser of the Left Field stage – said: “I don’t think it was inevitable.”

“Glastonbury was one of those big things where we all thought, ‘OK that’s a landmark there. If we can get to Glasto, then… it’s a real signal to the rest of the festival diaspora that things are going to happen again’. So losing it again for another year is a bit of a shock.”

The musician added that once the pandemic ended, the demand for festivals would still be there. “Once this ends, people will want to get together and listen to music again because there’s something you can get from gathering together in a crowd to listen to music,” he said.

“You can’t get that on the internet. It’s just the hope that those venues and those festivals are still going to be there.”

When announcing Glastonbury’s cancellation last week, organisers Michael and Emily Eavis said: “In spite of our efforts to move Heaven & Earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the Festival happen this year. We are so sorry to let you all down.”

Tickets will now roll over to 2022, with the festival team saying they were confident they could “deliver something really special” next year.

Since then, Michael Eavis has expressed his hopes to be able to hold a smaller event in September.

“I would like to do something smaller somewhere around the anniversary date of when we started, which was the 18th of September 1970,” he said. “I would like to consider possibly doing something around that time.”
