Steve Aoki Brings the Rave Home on “6OKI – Rave Royale” EP

Steve Aoki pays homage to his club and festival roots with his Dim Mak EP, 6OKI – Rave Royale.

The EP includes six hard-hitting collaborations with Timmy Trumpet, k?d, Gammer, Brennan Heart, Ben Nicky, and Hasse de Moor giving each song its own fresh sound. Whether it is “BIB’s” pulsating low-ends, drilling synths on “Like It Like That (feat. Spyro & MYLKI),” eccentric percussion throughout “Incoming,” invigorating wubs on “Mind Control,” explosive melodies via “Close to You (feat. PollyAnna),” or a brassy revamp of Pulp Fiction’s famous guitar riff on “Tarantino (feat. STARX),” Aoki and his collaborators deliver on each track.

Visually, the EP’s “Rave Royale” narrative spans across a series of animated video game-styled music videos, inspired by the cult classic Japanese film Battle Royale as well as the Fortnite video game. [Watch them all here.]

Seven Lions leads ‘1999’ EP with vintage trance redesign of ‘Rush Over Me’ – Dancing Astronaut

“Rush Over Me” still preserves its standing as one of melodic dubstep’s single most cherished possessions, and just past the track’s four-year anniversary, Seven Lions has decided to reengineer his 2016 masterwork alongside HALIENE, Illenium, and Said The Sky. The version arrives as the first of four old-school trance reimaginings from Seven Lions’ 1999 EP, currently slated to arrive on an unspecified date in February.

Scouring through his decade-long canon of classics, the Ophelia Records commander-in-chief has handpicked a quartet of his cardinal productions to comprise the 1999 track listing, leading with “Rush Over Me” as well as an incoming adaptation of his Jason Ross and Paul Meany 2017 tie-up, “Higher Love.” Maintaining the heart-stopping character that made the original so triumphant, Seven Lions’ revision of “Rush Over Me” leaves a trail of purely old-school and nostalgic trance, equipping HALIENE’s emotive vocals to provide guidance to the rework’s five-minute direction. Seven Lions explained that the EP originated from him hitting an artistic wall throughout 2020 and seeking the opportunity to create music sans any expectations, stating,

“2020 was a strange and honestly really demotivating year for me. I was having a hard time feeling inspired and creative in the studio so I decided to just do some musical therapy and make old school trance remixes of some of my older tracks. I had a great time making these songs. They have a nostalgic vibe for me and it made me remember how much I love the process of making music, especially with zero expectations. It definitely worked and has brought me a lot of focus and I’ve been really happy just being at home and making loads of music that I’m excited to share with you down the line. For now I hope these songs bring you as much joy as they brought me!”

The Kinks announce livestream ‘Moneygoround’ show

The Kinks have announced a livestream event called ‘The Moneygoround’ to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their album ‘Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One’.

It comes after the band recently reissued the 1970 album – which is commonly abbreviated to either ‘Lola Versus Powerman…’ or ‘Lola’ – on an array of formats, including a limited edition deluxe 10” slipcased book pack (containing a 60-page book, 3XCDs, 2X7” singles and four colour prints).

Expanding on the anniversary celebrations, frontman Ray Davies has worked with dramatist  Paul Sirett on a new 45-minute play, based on the themes and lyrics of the record itself, featuring poet/actor Ben Norris in the central role.

“‘The Moneygoround’ is a one-man show documenting a character facing the challenging circumstances of making an album under extreme pressure,” Davies said in a statement. “This play, similar to a psychodrama, follows the ups and downs of the character as he plays out events in his life. He confronts the dark forces surrounding him after falling into an emotional and financial ‘hole’ eventually he is saved by a song after confiding in his friend, Lola.”

Set to be broadcast as part of a one-off livestream show on January 29 at 8pm GMT/3pm EST on the Kinks’ YouTube channel, you can watch a trailer for ‘The Moneygoround’ below.

Elsewhere, The Southbank Centre has announced a series of livestream events set to take place over the next three months.

Reviving its ‘Inside Out’ multi-arts series which took place last autumn, the London arts institution is inviting audiences to enjoy a number of online performances and discussions from the comfort of their own living rooms.

Meanwhile, Arlo Parks will preview her forthcoming debut album ‘Collapsed In Sunbeams’ track-by-track in a special livestream.

Whyel Returns To Punk With New Cover Of “Brain Stew” by Green Day

Back in 2017-2018, Whyel put out some seriously promising punk crossover hits, remixing DJ Snake’s “Let Me Love You,” The Chainsmokers’ “You Owe Me,” and Dillon Francis & Yung Pinch’s “Hello There.” It’s been a few years since then and he’s put out a ton of singles in the dubstep and trap realm, but he’s finally back to his punk sound this year with a fresh cover of Green Day’s iconic 1995 hit, “Brain Stew.”

Whyel perfectly captures the essence of the original, with the slowly building elements, one coming atop another. But he accentuates it with an even more gritty sound and, of course, some heavier instrumentation and more elaborate synth work.

Ultra Music Festival reportedly cancels 2021 edition – Dancing Astronaut

For a second consecutive year, Ultra Musical Festival will not be making their long-awaited Bayfront Park homecoming. After being the first major event to falter due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ultra Music Festival is now following a similar pattern for 2021’s festival circuit but is reportedly holding out on a formal announcement until City of Miami officials grant them a permit for their 2022 edition.

In a letter obtained by Billboard from Ultra’s attorney to the City of Miami, dated January 21, 2022, Ultra states that the spread and uncertainty COVID-19 is forcing their second cancellation. Ultra has requested rescheduled dates for March 25 – 27, 2022 and that the festival’s payment contract with the city “be deemed modified to correspond with the rescheduled dates.”

This story is still developing, stay tuned for updates.

Tomahawk announce first album in eight years, ‘Tonic Immobility’

Tomahawk will release a new album, ‘Tonic Immobility’, after an eight-year absence – listen to the album’s first single ‘Business Casual’ now.

The rock supergroup – comprising Matt Paton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle), Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard, Unsemble), Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle, Fantômas) and John Stanier (Helmet, Battles) – will share the follow-up to 2013’s ‘Oddfellows’ on March 26.

Denison said of the record: “‘Tonic Immobility’ could just be something in the air we’re feeling. It’s been a rough year between the pandemic and everything else. A lot of people feel somewhat powerless and stuck as they’re not able to make a move without second guessing themselves or worrying about the outcomes” [quote via Blabbermouth].

He continued: “For as much as the record possibly reflects that, it’s also an escape from the realities of the world. We’re not wallowing in negativity or getting political. For me, rock has always been an alternate reality to everything else. I feel like this is yet another example.”

‘Tonic Immobility’ tracklist:

01. ‘SHHH!’
02. ‘Valentine Shine’
03. ‘Predators And Scavengers’
04. ‘Doomsday Fatigue’
05. ‘Business Casual’
06. ‘Tattoo Zero’
07. ‘Fatback’
08. ‘Howlie’
09. ‘Eureka’
10. ‘Sidewinder’
11. ‘Recoil’
12. ‘Dog Eat Dog’

Vocalist Mike Patton, meanwhile, continues to juggle many music projects.

Last year, his band Mr. Bungle released their first album in 21 years, ‘The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo’, which featured re-recorded versions of songs from their 1986 demo and two covers. And in 2021 it looks as if his other band, Dead Cross – his group with Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, The Locust/Retox’s Justin Pearson, and Retox’s Michael Crain – will also release an album.

Patton told Consequence Of Sound last October that: “Tomahawk is done, and Dead Cross is in process.”
