Electric Forest plans to return in 2021, Rothbury officials approve weekend dates

Hot off the heels of Glastonbury’s 2021 cancellation, another major festival property is actually planning to move ahead with their 2021 event plans. As the US climbs to nearly 500,000 COVID-19 deaths, Electric Forest is cementing their plans to return to Rothbury this year, with multiple possible weekends secured for the festival.

According to a recent local report in the White Lake Beacon, the Rothbury Village Council has approved dates in June, as well as securing two additional alternative weekends for the festival as well. According to Village clerk Carol Witzke, the alternate dates are August 12 – 15 and August 19 – 22. While the festival seems to be eyeing a June 2021 comeback, last year requests to postpone the event by promoter Madison House were shot down as COVID cases began to spread across the country, ultimately forcing Electric Forest’s imminent cancellation. This year, organizers appear to be trying to cover those bases with two alternate weekends secured for later in the summer, should a postponement be necessary.

2020 would have been Electric Forest’s 10 year anniversary. If this year’s event is to proceed as planned, organizers will have a grip of event details on the way, hopefully including increased safety, sanitation, and distancing measures for the 2021 event.

Cloves delves deep into social anxiety on new song ‘Sicko’


Cloves has released a new track that examines the “panic scramble” of social anxiety – listen to ‘Sicko’ below.

The London-based Australian artist follows up her recent cover of Charli XCX and Christine & The Queens’ ‘Gone’ with a sleek and powerful track that dives into her psyche and mental health struggles.

Produced by Detonate and Hudson Mohawke, ‘Sicko’ is the second taste of Cloves’ upcoming yet-to-be-titled second album, which follows on from her breakthrough 2015 EP ‘XIII’ and 2018 debut album ‘One Big Nothing’.

“Sicko is my best way of painting the tunnel vision, panic scramble of social anxiety,” Cloves said in a statement. “It’s like a living, breathing second personality in your brain. One which makes you question everything you do and say in social situations, worried that others don’t like you for it.

She added: “It’s exhausting, not only keeping you from enjoying the present but also fucks with your relationships.”

Cloves’ second album will explore “a dystopian synthetic world created in her own mind which is struggling through anxiety, depression and obsessive overthinking”, according to a press release.

Meanwhile, back in August, Hudson Mohawke released a new compilation called ‘Poom Gems’.

It arrived after the Glaswegian producer put out ‘Big Booty Hiking Exhibition’, a collection of previously unreleased tracks, earlier that same month.

A month later, the producer’s track ‘Chimes’ was used to soundtrack a Joe Biden campaign video.

Lifted from the Scottish producer’s 2014 EP of the same name, the song played over footage of the recently elected US president as a number of his high-profile supporters urge viewers to vote.

Electric Forest Locks In Alternate 2021 Dates for Decade One Celebration


Electric Forest has locked in new 2021 dates, providing alternate weekends for the music festival’s 10-year celebration.

According to a local report from the White Lake Beacon, the new potential dates for Electric Forest are August 12 – 15 and August 19 – 22. The village council in Rothbury, Michigan has reportedly approved and reserved these dates for the event’s promoter, Madison House, and they’re hopeful for the festival’s return at Double JJ Resort.

Village clerk Carol Witzke clarified these dates are not meant to extend the festival, but on hold in case COVID-19 pushes the festival back once again. As of now, the festival’s website gives no clear date for Electric Forest Decade One.

The beloved music festival was canceled last year due to growing health concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic. Ticket holders were given the option to be issued a refund or keep their ticket for this year.

Looking forward into 2021, Electric Forest’s latest statement reads:

While we are holding our typical June timeframe, we have to consider health and safety guidelines as well as artist, infrastructure, and vendor availability. These all play a part in confirming a date for Summer 2021.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we navigate the opportunities, and we will communicate again with confirmed information.

Armin van Buuren unveils new anthem and festival dates during ‘ASOT 1000’ – Dancing Astronaut

On January 21, Dutch superstar Armin van Buuren celebrated the 1000th episode of his famed A State of Trance radio serial and unveiled the anthem for the show’s milestone celebration along the way. Titled “Turn The World Into A Dancefloor,” the new single has all of the markings of an Armin classic, be it his ethereal and hymnal harmonies or a buildup that stacks melody on top of melody, leading listeners to a main stage trance drop that only a select few producers can pull off.

In addition to the landmark anthem, Armin and Co. also used ASOT 1000 to announce the Turn The World Into A Dancefloor live, in-person trance festival. The celebration is scheduled to take place from September 3–4, 2021 at Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, The Netherlands, one of the trance legend’s favorite venues. The first day of the event will pay tribute to the past 20 years of ASOT; the second will look forward to the future of the series and the genre that it represents.

Listen to Cosha and Shygirl team up on new single ‘Lapdance From Asia’


Cosha has dropped her new song ‘Lapdance From Asia’, which features guest vocals from Shygirl – listen to the collaborative track below.

The Irish vocalist and songwriter’s first track of 2021 was co-written with Zack Sekoff and Mura Masa in LA and follows on from her 2020 singles ‘No Kink In The Wire’ and ‘Berlin Air’.

‘Lapdance From Asia’, which is the latest preview of Cosha’s forthcoming and soon-to-be-announced project (which is set for release in the summer), sees Cosha teaming up with Shygirl for the first time on record.

Speaking about working with Shygirl, Cosha said in a statement: “Me and Shy had been following each other for a while on IG and I think we recognised something in each other that we liked, definitely an energy that translated in the song and ultimately into our friendship.”

Shygirl released her ‘ALIAS’ EP back in November, with the release subsequently featuring on NME‘s list of the best EPs and mixtapes of 2020.

In a four-star review of the record, NME‘s Ben Jolley wrote: “‘ALIAS’ proves that Shygirl is in full control of her artistic vision no matter the scale. Undaunted by the prospect of not being able to bring the EP to physical life until her UK and Europe tour in May 2021, Shygirl has instead created her own alternative reality for fans to immerse themselves in.”

Back in June, Mura Masa announced funding for a new programme to help train black women in live music industry roles.

“My management and some of my touring crew are organising a free, 12-week weekend course for 10 black women to train in live music roles (specifically crew roles like front of house/mixing/monitor engineering, lighting technician),” the producer and musician explained in a statement.

“It begins to address a problem that we’ve privately discussed at length whilst putting my own show together, in that there is a serious, serious lack of women of colour occupying these roles and we would love to have that change. If you’re in the industry then you know just how true this is.”

Fresh off their collaboration with Green Velvet earlier this month, CamelPhat are back with a progressive remix of London Grammar‘s “Lose Your Head.” The duo’s take on the ethereal original adds in a deep house groove and uplifting melodic synth lines that sound eager to star at festival mainstages everywhere.

CamelPhat ended 2020 by dropping their enormously anticipated debut album Dark Matter.
