Silk City’s hiatus-closing single, ‘New Love’ with Ellie Goulding, has arrived – Dancing Astronaut

After Diplo and Mark Ronson took to social media on January 13 to tease the return of Silk City, Ellie Goulding confirmed that she would play a part in their hiatus-closing single, “New Love.” Now, after days of waiting in the rafters, “New Love” is finally here.

Having bowed out after their chart-topping release “Electricity” featuring Dua Lipa back in 2018, Diplo and Ronson bounded back into the studio to smash yet another certifiable hit out of the park. Finally making a Goulding-assisted comeback in 2021, after releasing a plethora of records in 2018 and working with names ranging from Desiigner to The Blessed Madonna, the two mega-producers are surely making a statement, and hopefully “New Love” is just the first of many that they have in store this new year.

Watch Playboi Carti bring ‘Slay3r’ to ‘The Tonight Show’

Playboi Carti performed ‘Slay3r’ on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night, his first late night appearance promoting ‘Whole Lotta Red’.

Carti played the track inside a strobe-lit warehouse with a full band set-up — the rapper hanging off a giant ladder, and the stage surrounded by a ring of fire.

Watch the clip below.

The same episode of The Tonight Show also marked Fallon’s bandleader and drummer of The Roots, Questlove’s 50th birthday. Black Thought from the band gave him a heart-shaped ruby brooch with a yellow diamond, while Fallon gave him Morris Day’s mirror from Prince’s Purple Rain, signed by Day himself.

Carti released his long-awaited second album ‘Whole Lotta Red’ on Christmas Day last year. The 24-track album features appearances from Future (‘Teen X’), Kid Cudi (‘M3tamorphosis’), and Kanye West (‘Go2DaMoon’), who also executive produced the record.

It proved a divisive release — NME gave it three stars, writing “there’s no getting away from the fact that at 24 tracks long, there’s not a lot of variety on ‘Whole Lotta Red’, and the biggest take away here is perhaps that perennial rap fan favourite: less is most definitely more”.

Your EDM Guest Mix: V O E Creates an Uplifting Mix for the Viper Annual

Full of previews, exclusives, remixes and the best of their tracks from 2020, Viper’s Annual 2021 album is once again a massive compilation of dancefloor fun, emotional vocals and locked in engineering. Big sounds to bring in the New Year in style, even if for many of us it’s in our jammies in the living room. The album features pretty much any D&B star you can think of from label boss Matrix & Futurebound to Zombie Cats to A.M.C. & Turno, Blaine Stranger, Murdock, Roni Size…name a name and they’re probably on there.

The Annual, as is its “annual” tradition, also features a lot of newer faces in the D&B scene. Breakout Viper stars Millbrook and Halflight, for example, bring some of the most fun beats of the album. The Aussie duo V O E have also started making big waves in late 2019 and 2020, featuring on compilations from Blackout, Unchained records, Liquicity and RAM and having their own EP on ProtoCode before being on the Viper Annual and being picked for the teaser sampler with Halflight.

With their diverse style gaining traction, it only makes sense that Viper would choose them for this Your EDM guest mix that we’re happy to deliver today. 40 minutes of high-vibe drum & bass to lift spirits and keep the dance going no matter what the dancefloor looks like. It’s impossible not to be happy while listening to this Viper-heavy mix and it’s clearly the portends of raves to come in 2021.

Premiere: Biicla adds sonic drama to CLO’s ‘Blackout’

After formally introducing herself to the sonic scene with the September 2020 release of her debut single, “Blackout,” CLO invited several artists to take her introductory number to the drawing table and make it their own. Among the handful of producers to receive CLO’s coveted tap is Biicla.

In the time that has followed the Russian entity’s own installation in the global dance market with August 2019’s “No Place,” the name “Biicla” has come to bespeak a stylistically rich and exploratory catalog of electronic freewheeling. Just what he’d do with CLO’s original was an aesthetic toss up, but not for Dancing Astronaut readers. Biicla’s remix of “Blackout” will formally release on January 22, but listeners have the opportunity to hear Biicla dress the Bay Area native’s single in dark sonic drama one day early, only on Dancing Astronaut.

Stripping the pop sensibilities and piano definition of “Blackout” in its untouched form, Biicla cuts an edge to a one-off that has attracted a ring of remixers, among whom Biicla’s spin is a surefire standout. The “Luv” producer’s re-imagination of “Blackout” can be found below.

Yungblud and Machine Gun Kelly share zombie film-inspired ‘Acting Like That’ video

Yungblud and Machine Gun Kelly have shared the official video to ‘Acting Like That’, their recent collaborative track – watch below.

The team-up, which also features Blink-182‘s Travis Barker, appears on Yungblud’s second album ‘Weird!’ (released last month).

Tonight (January 21), Yungblud – aka Dom Harrison – shared the zombie movie-inspired visuals for his latest single.

The ‘Acting Like That’ video begins with Harrison calling MGK from a vintage red phone box, with the pair recalling the “mad one” they’ve been on in the days prior. Kelly, who is lying on the bonnet of his car, then spots a zombie approaching and swiftly hangs up.

“[What the] fuck’s his problem,” Harrison says, before appearing to clock something of grave concern in the distance. “Holy…,” he adds. We then see Machine Gun Kelly and Barker performing the song as Yungblud sings from a doubledecker bus.

Groaning and covered in blood, a zombie Dom Harrison is last seen stumbling back into the phone box. Watch above.

Speaking about the track upon its release last month, Yungblud said: “‘Acting Like That’ is a result of what happens when me, MGK and Travis get together, the energy’s electric and we write songs that amplify a feeling.

“This song radiates just going fucking nuts at your favourite show, a feeling that we all need right now. this song is about losing control and feeling free with your best fucking mates.”

Last week Yungblud revealed that he’s almost finished another new record during the coronavirus-enforced lockdown, telling fans on Instagram he was currently “in the studio”.

“We’ve been locked down here. I’ve been so mad creative!” he said. “I’ve literally nearly got another album done, which is just fucking mental. I can’t wait for you to see.”

Government “must act now to save festivals,” ministers warn after Glastonbury cancellation

The government have been issued with a stark warning to “act now” to save the UK’s festival scene after today’s cancellation of Glastonbury.

  • READ MORE: When and how could festivals and gigs return in 2021? Industry insiders and medical experts speak out

After the coronavirus pandemic proved devastating for last year’s festival, it is feared that a similar run of cancellations could have a much more longterm impact on the circuit. At the start of January, The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee heard from organisers of Parklife and Boomtown that many summer festivals could be cancelled as soon as the end of this month without urgent government clarity, assurances on what might be possible and help with insurance. Many festivals will not otherwise be able to afford to return and risk being wiped out forever.

“If the government don’t help with insurance then the smaller festivals are going to drop away,” Sacha Lord, co-founder of Parklife, said. “Social distancing does not work at any of these events. It’s a festival.”

Now, ministers have marked Glasto’s cancellation as an urgent wake-up call for the government.

“The news that the UK has lost the Glastonbury Festival for a second year running is devastating,” said DCMS Committee Chair Julian Knight MP. “We have repeatedly called for Ministers to act to protect our world-renowned festivals like this one with a Government-backed insurance scheme. Our plea fell on deaf ears and now the chickens have come home to roost.

“The jewel in the crown will be absent but surely the Government cannot ignore the message any longer – it must act now to save this vibrant and vital festivals sector.”

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, agreed that more needed to be done to help the festival and entertainment scene.

“Devastating announcement today from Glastonbury Festival, such an important date within the Festival calendar for many, and will be devastating for festival-goers and businesses looking at the summer season, and the opportunity to trade in 2021,” he said.

“The Government must recognise the impact of the negligible levels of support given to the festival and events sector, and work through a solution that will safeguard the sector, and allow the 2021 festival and events season to take place across the UK.”

While echoing comments from Reading & Leeds boss Melvin Benn and Isle Of Wight Festival’s John Giddings that there was still time to put measures into place to ensure that festivals could happen safely (provided that at least 60% of the population had been vaccinated, according to medical experts) Association of Independent Festivals’ Chief Executive Paul Reed told NME that the cut-off point for key decisions for many events was fast approaching.

“There’s a real danger that the public health situation will change dramatically in the spring and there could be a confidence in gatherings and festivals taking place, but the failure of insurance would heighten the risk too much for a festival to happen,” said Reed.

“Businesses will collapse and all the economic and human consequences will follow. What we have now is a vaccine and vaccine roll-out plan. We’re hoping that means the government can give us a clear idea of the road map for live music.”
