AFI share taste of forthcoming 11th album with two new singles

AFI have dropped the first taste of their forthcoming 11th studio album, two new singles, ‘Twisted Tongues’ and ‘Escape From Los Angeles’.

The veteran Californian rockers announced the forthcoming release of their as-yet-unnamed 11th offering earlier this month, sharing a video teaser to Twitter. Today (January 16), they’ve dropped its first two cuts.

In a press release, AFI frontman Davey Havok explained that ‘Twisted Tongues’ was the first piece of music the band explored for the upcoming new album.

“The dreaminess of the music lyrically inspired themes of unforeseen severance,” Havok said.

“It is a pining song of being set adrift by those who once feigned to share the same anchors.”

Listen to ‘Twisted Tongues’ below:

Speaking on ‘Escape From Los Angeles’, Havok said, “Los Angeles, like most of my loves, is imbued with a darkness and radiance.”

“Musically, ‘Escape from Los Angeles’ called for my own vantage to this classic theme of the city’s dichotomous allure.”

Listen to the track below:

Though AFI have yet to announce an official release date for the new album, the new songs mark the Californian rocker’s first new music since the release of their five-track EP ‘The Missing Man’ in 2018. The EP was the follow-up to 2017’s ‘AFI (The Blood Album)’, AFI’s last full-length release.

Havok and guitarist Jade Puget have been active on the scene in the interim, however, with their side project Blaqk Audio. The outfit released their fourth studio album ‘Only Things We Love’ in 2019.

Palm Springs Mayor Hopeful for Coachella’s Return This Fall

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is hopeful to return in Fall 2021, according to the Mayor of Palm Springs.

Mayor Christy Holstege recently spoke with Channel Q’s The Morning Beat with AJ and Mikalah. During the interview, they touched on the future of Coachella and other major events — and it’s looking like Fall is the move.

“We’re not planning on events in Spring this year,” Mayor Holstege said point-blank. “We’re hoping that those events will be rescheduled to the Fall of this year.”

Of course, we’ve been hearing this rumor since October last year — but as the days and weeks go by, it becomes more real. Currently, Coachella’s website is still advertising festival passes for 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic looms over festival season yet again.

Whenever new Coachella dates are solidified, we’re expecting an official announcement and full rollout with options for ticket holders. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed for Fall-chella.

Habstrakt puts the bass house spin on Nitepunk’s ‘Flow’

Habstrakt primes himself for another yearly round of bass takeover as he puts forth his first release of 2021. Recruited by young gun Nitepunk for a remix of his single “Flow,” the Frenchman takes on the former’s HARD Recs label debut with a sinister four-on-the-floor spin.

Previously crossing paths when Nitepunk appeared on Habstrakt’s remix package for “The One,” the two producers now trade favors again. Transforming the breaks-heavy production into a steady bass house endeavor, Habstrakt injects skittering hi-hats and dark bass line steps into his reimagined delivery, maneuvering the underground components of the predecessor into more club-heavy proceedings. Less raucous than the original, but equally hard-hitting, Habstrakt’s remix deals out a low-profile groove with massive impact.

DLMT & Mahalo Bring The Fiery Energy On Future House, “Destination”

DLMT and Mahalo first teamed up for “So Cold” back in 2021, and the duo returns for their first track of 2021 with “Destination.”

This fiery future house number is rife with energy and powerful lyrics and even more powerful beats.

DLMT shares: “Mahalo and I have a bunch of records in the works together and this is one we’re super stoked about. We actually started making this right around the time that we dropped So Cold and the final product is just phenomenal. Who knows, we might need to create an alias for our collabs because there’s a lot more coming down the pipeline. Stay tuned and enjoy this heater to start off your new year on the right note!”

Mahalo shares: “The “So Cold” dream team is back and I am both pumped and proud to present our new track “Destination” in partnership with Armada. DLMT and I discussed how we should follow up our last single and felt it was right to cook up a totally different vibe and not just rehash the same song with different lyrics as you hear so often. We hope you enjoy this tune as much as we enjoyed making it!”

ATB x Topic x A7S – Your Love (9PM)

It’s been 23 years since ATB’s platinum-selling classic ‘9pm (Till I Come)’ was released in 1998, and  he’s now ready to release the first ever official remake with ‘Your Love (9pm)’ in collaboration with Topic and A7S on the vocals.

Both ATB and Topic worked together in the studio in Germany, and got on a video call with A7S to get the lyrics just right.

“Over the past 20 years I’ve received so many requests for collaborations, remakes and cover versions of my song ‘9pm (Till I Come)’ but I passed on them all because I was never really satisfied with the sound of the approach nor the final,” explains ATB. “Then I listened to Topic’s “Breaking Me” together with Rudi (management) and we immediately had the feeling that these two sound worlds could fuse together perfectly.”

Fuse together perfectly, is correct, this blend of new school and old school makes for a nostalgic number, that I’m sure we’ll be hearing everywhere soon, more please!

Rage Against The Machine share documentary on race called ‘Killing In Thy Name’

Rage Against The Machine have shared a short documentary on race called Killing In Thy Name – watch it below.

Released in collaboration with international artists collective The Ummah Chroma, the film follows a teacher as he educates a group of small children on the history of oppression in the United States.

“The following is a document of true events,” an intro to Killing In Thy Name reads. “Our aim is for this piece to be a fire escape from the fiction known as whiteness and a spring for discovery. Remember, the children are always watching.”

Rage Against the Machine’s protest song ‘Killing In The Name’ is used throughout the film, which is capped off with quotes from the band.

“My mom [Mary Morello] is a white woman with a radical voice,” said Tom Morello. “For three decades she was a progressive teacher in a conservative high school inspiring students to challenge the system – in her actions and words she has always taught that racism must never be ignored and must always be confronted.”

Bassist Tim Commerford added: “Writing songs that have something to say about what’s going on socially and politically isn’t a choice for us. It’s an obligation. I want to use music as a weapon and start spraying fools.”

“The music wouldn’t exist without the politics,” drummer Brad Wilk added. “When we’re playing a show, if something clicks for any one kid in the audience – starting that change, that process of thinking for themselves – that’s the most potent time Rage Against the Machine can have as a band.”

The cover art for the documentary depicts a famous photo of a man standing beside the skulls of roughly 1.5 million bison, which were slaughtered in part to end the fight for independence by Native Americans.

Last month, Morello discussed Rage Against The Machine‘s infamous naked protest during one of their sets at Lollapalooza in 1993.

The band walked out on stage naked in Philadelphia in July 1993 (back when Lollapalooza was a touring festival) in a protest against censorship.

Meanwhile, Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich has revealed that he’s been keeping his drumming skills sharp during the coronavirus pandemic by playing along to Rage Against The Machine while practising at home.

Kayzo & Black Tiger Sex Machine Reveal Supercharged Collab, “Lifeline” ft. Point North

Kayzo’s and Black Tiger Sex Machine’s styles both go hand in hand as different as they are. Whether dubstep, hardstyle, or electro house, the ethos behind each of their productions remains “go hard and heavy and never look back.”

Finally, they’re teaming up on January 29 for “Lifeline” featuring Point North, and even from the brief clip they’ve shared, we can’t wait.

Featuring alt-pop trio Point North, the clip doesn’t show off the drop, but we can already tell from the build that it’s going to be massive. What direction it takes, though, genre-wise, we’ll have to wait and see…
