Lane 8 makes grand entrance in 2021 with Julia Church-assisted ‘Oh, Miles,’ from ‘Winter 2020 Mixtape’ – Dancing Astronaut

Lane 8 is already pursuing back-to-back seats at Dancing Astronaut‘s Artist of the Year table. Our 2020 Artist of the Year put the finishing touches on an overflowing, 12-month bid of musical feats with his fourth and final seasonal mixtape in mid-December, and after a well-deserved holiday intermission, Lane 8 is now making his presence in 2021 known with his first original of the new year, “Oh, Miles” with Julia Church.

The open-armed introduction to the This Never Happened king’s “Winter 2020 Mixtape” was just one of an untold count of IDs in the two-and-a-half-hour marathon, but it potentially serves as the mix’s sole unreleased crown jewel. Arriving just days after the one-year commemoration of Brightest Lights, “Oh, Miles” is good cause for our “Winter 2020 Mixtape” listening session taking much longer than it should’ve, considering it was nearly impossible to make it past the endeavor’s opening minutes without stopping to rewind. Coupling Church’s chilling verses with Lane 8’s empyreal production echelon, the tie-up makes an admirable bid as one of Lane 8’s finest as it provides an encouraging beginning to 2021.

Donald Trump reportedly awarded Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs with the National Medal of the Arts during his impeachment

Donald Trump reportedly awarded the National Medal of the Arts to both Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs while his impeachment hearing in the US House of Representatives was taking place yesterday (January 13).

Trump became the first US President to be impeached twice after he was charged with “incitement of insurrection” over last week’s deadly storming of the US Capitol by his supporters. He now faces a trial in the Senate, although that will not be concluded by the time he leaves office next Wednesday (January 20).

  • Read more: Why we never, ever need to see a Donald Trump biopic

Both Bloomberg and NBC News report that while yesterday’s impeachment hearing was underway in Congress, Trump was presiding over a private ceremony in the Oval Office which saw the country singers Keith and Skaggs each being awarded the National Medal of the Arts.

The Medal is the highest award that can be given to artists and arts patrons by the US government, and is awarded by the President to individuals or groups who “…are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the United States”.

Trump previously awarded the honour to Alison Krauss and Jon Voight during a ceremony in 2019.

Joe Biden’s inauguration next week, meanwhile, will culminate with the TV special Celebrating America, which will be hosted by Tom Hanks and feature musical performances by Justin Timberlake and Demi Lovato.

Kendrick Lamar’s pgLang announces creative project featuring Baby Keem, Brent Faiyaz and more

Kendrick Lamar’s company pgLang has launched a creative project in partnership with Calvin Klein, announcing a list of participating musical collaborators.

One Instagram post, shared by both the agency and the label, announced the partnership and shared a list of project names and their corresponding artists. Musicians participating in the collaboration include Lamar’s mentee and NME 100 artist Baby Keem, Mecca Allah, Travis Bennett, Amber Wagner and Brent Faiyaz, among others. The seventh entry on the list is mysteriously left blank.

A second post was published at roughly the same time, featuring Mecca Allah in a promotional video.

An additional seven videos will be released in the coming days.

It remains unclear what the project entails, but fans suspect new music could be on the horizon considering the first video, the artists that are involved and the fact the project announcement resembles an album tracklist.

  • READ MORE: The artists we really, really want new music from in 2021

Lamar launched pgLang with longtime business/creative partner Dave Free in March last year, described in a statement as an “at service company”. Free said the agency was focused on “cultivating raw expression from grassroots partnerships”.

“Only a few contemporary creators have figured out how to speak the evolving language of this generation without fading into the white noise or pre-assigned market share,” the statement read.

“pgLang is designed to be artist-friendly above all else and embrace both quality and unconventional concepts. This ethos will be applied to an array of creators who will join pgLang, including authors, film and television directors, fine artists, producers, musicians, and blah, blah, blah… you have all heard this shit before.”

STUDY: No Infections with COVID-19 Tested Concert Audience

Results of a recent COVID-19 concert study with a tested audience and no social distancing came back with no infections.

The concert took place December 12 at the Sala Apolo in Barcelona featuring four performances by DJs and local bands, with 463 active participants and a control group of 496 who didn’t attend.

Participants, ranging between ages 18 and 59, said they had been living without coronavirus for the last 14 days and were only allowed entry with a same-day negative SARS-CoV-2 antigen test.

While no social distancing was enforced in the concert hall, each participant was given a certified N95 cloth mask. In addition, the venue had a designated bar zone, limited outdoor smoking area, and security ensured restrooms didn’t get too crowded. Ventilation and air flow was monitored as well.

The concert study went on for 5 hours, with a median time spent inside the concert hall of approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes.

After 8 days, participants were given a second SARS-CoV-2 swab — all tests from concert attendees came back negative, while the two in the control group were infected.

Researchers concluded:

Attending a live music concert staged with a series of security measures that included a negative antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 done on the same day, was not associated with an increase in COVID-19 infections.

The study was conducted by the Foundation against AIDS and Infectious Diseases of the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona (Barcelona), and funded by Primavera Sound.

More on the concert study here.

Watch Corey Taylor ignite hilarity in new video for ‘Samantha’s Gone’

Corey Taylor has released a tongue-in-cheek music video for ‘Samantha’s Gone’, a cut from his debut solo album, ‘CMFT’.

The Slipknot frontman brought on several big name friends for the comedic video, including actor Dean Cameron, Steel Panther, Ace Von Johnson, Jonah Nimoy and more.

Cameron plays a disgruntled director, who arrives on set to shoot a music video only to be put off by the band’s glam-rock antics. Taylor – who had been serving as a cameraman – unites with other members of the crew on the set’s stage and blows Cameron away with their skill.

Watch the video for ‘Samantha’s Gone’ below:

In a statement, Taylor said, “The video for ‘Samantha’s Gone’ served two purposes: Making fun of so-called ‘indie rock’ bands and getting all my friends together to hang out and have a good time.

“We all went back and forth between having fun and social distancing. Watching the first ‘band’ was great, then being fired from our own song in favor of Steel Panther was the icing on the cake.”

Taylor’s ‘CMFT’ dropped last October. Upon its release, the album marked his first solo offering, as well as his first new music since Slipknot released ‘We Are Not Your Kind’ in 2019.

Last month the musician dropped a music video for another album cut, ‘Everybody Dies On My Birthday’, released to coincide with his 47th birthday.

Earlier this week, Taylor – who also fronts Stone Sour – revealed he has a lot planned for 2021, telling Kerrang! of his plans for a solo tour, shows with Slipknot, a film and more.

“I’m doing the ‘CMFT’ thing before the Slipknot tours kind of kick back in,@ Taylor said. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to do that, and then just see what happens after that.”

Sub Focus & Wilkinson Recruit High Contrast For High Octane “Freedom” Remix

Sub Focus & Wilkinson teamed up for their massive collaborative album Portals last year, proving to be one of the best pairings in drum & bass in a long time. On the album was the song “Freedom,” which is already one of the highest-streaming songs off the project.

Now in 2021, the two have recruited Hospital Records legend High Contrast to join them in a remix of their own track. Overall, the vibe of the track isn’t all that different — some brighter synths, some chopped vocals, but essentially the same drums & drum pattern. It’s a different flavor for sure, but more akin to the difference between vanilla and French vanilla.

Check out both the remix and original below and listen to find out which one is your favorite!
