Last night (January 9), pianist Mike Garson held a livestream event called A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day featuring a variety of artists paying tribute to the late musician, who died five year’s ago today (January 10).

The likes of Trent ReznorPerry Farrell, Adam Lambert, Peter Frampton, Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor, Anna Calvi and Duran Duran also took part in the livestream event – which was originally supposed to take place on Bowie’s birthday (January 8), but was postponed by a day following some logistical issues.

Yungblud, who shared his performance on Twitter, covered Bowie’s ‘Life On Mars’, which was first released on the 1971 album ‘Hunky Dory’.

“it’s rare in this life that you meet someone who shaped your whole existence,” he captioned his tweet. “i felt like i was on a different planet last night. he was there and i was with him. it was truly one of the the greatest moments of my fookin life. thankyou for everything starman.”

Corgan broke out his cover of ‘Space Oddity’ for the show, which he’s performed a few times over the years – you can watch the Smashing Pumpkins frontman’s performance below.

Elsewhere during the event, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor performed a pair of Bowie covers: ‘Fantastic Voyage’ and ‘Fashion’.

On Friday (January 8), one of Bowie’s final collaborators has dismissed the idea that ‘Blackstar’ was intended to be the singer’s farewell record.

Bowie’s final album was released only two days before he died from cancer in January 2016 – with many claiming that its lyrics can be interpreted as the singer tackling his own mortality.

However, Donny McCaslin – who leads the New York jazz ensemble featured on the album – instead claims that Bowie was planning on more work prior to his death.

“There is the narrative of ‘Blackstar’ being this farewell, which I totally get. But that coexists with the fact that he was just so creative. He was planning on doing more,” he told NME for a new oral history to mark five years of the record.

Meanwhile, David Bowie‘s previously unreleased covers of John Lennon‘s ‘Mother’ and Bob Dylan‘s ‘Tryin’ to Get to Heaven’ have been released for the first time, to mark what would have been the music icon’s 74th birthday.

LUM!X & HYPERCLAP BRING ‘MAJOR TOM’ BACK TO LIFE

2020 was really the year for LUM!X. After already scoring a massive hit in 2019 with ‘Monster’ he permanently marked his place in the world of Dance music with numerous releases like ‘Scare Me’ and ‘The Passenger’. Now he kicks off 2021 right with an energetic slap/euro house remake of the 1989 hit single ‘Major’ Tom by Peter Schilling who himself features on this new version as well. LUM!X created this new version with Producer duo Hyperclap.

Originally released in 1982 as ‘Major Tom (völlig losgelöst)’, it meant the claim to fame for German singer Peter Schilling. The record reached #1 in his home country, as well as in Austria, Switzerland, and Canada. A year later, the English version also became an international hit, making it to #14 on the US Billboard chart. Since then, the record has been an all-time classic, an 80’s anthem that still gets lots of airplay and spots in Best Of lists.

Last year, German dance act Hyperclap revived ‘Major Tom’ into a powerful electronic track, incorporating sweet, rolling beats and mesmerizing synth chords while working with Peter Schilling himself for the original vocal lines. It meant a welcome break in the lockdown void, turning into a hit once again – by now the record is closing in on 2 million Spotify streams.

And now, one of Germany’s hottest new artists LUM!X has also put his mark on this timeless tune. Known for his huge 2019 hit ‘Monster’ and last year’s gem ‘The Passenger (LaLaLa)’ (together with D.T.E and Eiffel 65’s Gabry Ponte), he’s by now renowned for his trademark dance vibes, strong hooks, and melodic approach.

The result of this team gives ‘Major Tom’ a strong new guise. This time, the vocals are taken from the internationally acclaimed English version, while the rhythms are more pounding, enhanced by pulsating chords and cool vocal snippets, drenched in electronic effects.

It’s an incredible blast from the past, as the melodies and emotionally charged vocals of the original tune are still recognizable, but the production takes it to a whole new 2021 level. Safe to say, this is a classic reborn, and surely a hopeful start of the new year.

“The idea was born at a dinner with the A&R Team in Hamburg. I said I would like to remake this Oldschool Party classic and a short time after, Spinnin’ pitched us the Stems from Hyperclap. We finished the project together and now it’s ready to hit the dancefloors of 2021.” LUM!X explains

Watch Trent Reznor cover David Bowie’s ‘Fashion’ and ‘Fantastic Voyage’ for tribute livestream

Trent Reznor performed a pair of David Bowie covers this weekend to pay tribute to the rock legend ahead of the fifth anniversary of his death.

Last night (January 9), pianist Mike Garson held a livestream event called A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day featuring a variety of artists paying tribute to the late musician, who died five year’s ago today (January 10).

The likes of Boy George, Smashing Pumpkins‘ Billy Corgan, Perry Farrell, Peter Frampton, Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor, Yungblud, Anna Calvi and Duran Duran all took part in the livestream event – which was originally supposed to take place on Bowie’s birthday (January 8), but was postponed by a day following some logistical issues.

Reznor, who was joined by his wife and How To Destroy Angels bandmate Mariqueen Maandig, Atticus Ross and Garson, performed covers of the Bowie songs ‘Fantastic Voyage’ and ‘Fashion’.

Watch the Nine Inch Nails frontman’s performance below:

Earlier in the week, Reznor recalled how he would listen to Bowie’s records when he was growing up, cementing Bowie in his mind as the “best archetype for someone who has a fantastic voice and was kind of an actor pretending to be a rock star, in a way”.

“[It] seemed to give him the ability to reinvent himself in ways that just felt like it would take a lot of courage to have had success at something and then throw it away and try something new,” Reznor told Consequence Of Sound.

Recalling how Nine Inch Nails later opened for Bowie on his ‘Outside Tour’ in 1995, Reznor remembered how he got to saw Bowie in person “and be terrified and intimidated” before then finding “an actual human being behind it that did impossibly live up to whatever you projected on him”.

“What really left the biggest impression on me was there I was in a bad state of addiction and kind of going down the toilet. And [Bowie] was on the other end to have come out of it,” Reznor continued.

“There were the few kind of big brother / fatherly times where he’d call me aside and kind of get on my shit: ‘You need to get your shit together.’ It doesn’t have to end up down there. He didn’t say this, but look at where he was. He was happy. He was still taking chances.”

Meanwhile, David Bowie‘s previously unreleased covers of John Lennon‘s ‘Mother’ and Bob Dylan‘s ‘Tryin’ to Get to Heaven’ have been released for the first time, to mark what would have been the music icon’s 74th birthday.

Galantis and JVKE Form Pop Bliss on “Dandelion”

Galantis don’t ever slow down. In the midst of a challenging year, the Swedish duo released their third studio album, shared three remixes, and crafted new non-album singles. From an unconventional collaboration with bass music kingpin NGHTMRE to spinning a DJ set for a virtual-prom livestream in promotion of the Ryan Murphy movie The Prom for Netflix, Galantis continue to find odd, yet engaging ways to push their sound and expand their audience.

Their latest single “Dandelion” follows this trend. Their latest collaborator is nineteen-year-old TikTok star JVKE. Since his track “Upside Down” first appeared on the social media app, JVKE has become the latest Internet sensation. Racking up over 20 million plays with his track “Upside Down” and snagging a Charlie Puth remix, JVKE is evidence of the growing influence TikTok is having over the music industry. This is what makes the new collaboration between the three surprising and logical. What started as a chance meeting on Instagram Live has now become a brand new pop track to kick off 2021.

“Dandelion” is an earworm. It kicks off with feminine vocals and bubbly lyrics. JVKE hops in with his breathy, sweet singing as the drum beat meets the soft, flowery melody. The track, which started as a JVKE demo shared with Galantis, has become a sugar rush of echoing whistles and bouncing timbre. Their chemistry is astounding showcasing the potential for this song to be a major facet in future Galantis sets.

Make sure to check out the new Galantis and JVKE song “Dandelion” out now everywhere as well as the new lyric video below.

ALOK & DANIEL BLUME JOIN FORCES ON NEW SINGLE ‘RAPTURE’

Brazilian dance music star Alok kicks off 2021 with the new single ‘Rapture’, a collaboration with Irish singer, producer, and DJ Daniel Blume, out on Friday 8th January via Spinnin’ Records and Alok’s label CONTROVERSIA.

A 2021 reimagining of the Nadia Ali club classic of the same name, ‘Rapture’ combines seductive vocals, emotion-tinged breakdowns, and a deep, driving bassline.

“I’m hyped to be teaming up with Alok to bring you our take on this noughties rave classic,” Blume enthuses.

The collaboration comes shortly after the launch of Alok’s social constitution of his own name where he donated 5.2 million dollars to the charitable cause. Instituto Alok was officialized on 19th December during Alok’s first end of year special live stream ‘Alive’, which was broadcasted free on Brazilian Television Network and via YouTube.

‘Rapture’ also marks the latest release on CONTROVERSIA, a label Alok launched last year to showcase emerging Brazilian talent as well as release an array of his own dance music.

Alok is a bonafide dance music superstar, racking over 20 million Instagram followers and 1 billion streams on Spotify with massive hits including ‘Hear Me Now’, ‘Never Let Me Go’, and ‘Big Jet Plane’. Recently voted #5 in the DJ Mag ‘Top 100’ awards, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential Brazilian artists of all time and is experiencing his breakout moment in the US. He was nominated for this year’s International Dance Music Awards for his hit remix of the Meduza single ‘Piece of Your Heart’ (over 80 million streams), partnered with global pop sensation Dua Lipa for the official remix of her hit single ‘Physical’ and revealed a remix of legendary band The Rolling Stone’s latest tune ‘Living In A Ghost Town’.

If this wasn’t enough, Alok broke global streaming records earlier this year with the debut of his penthouse floor show that racked in over 24 million views across various platforms and hit #1 on global trending Twitter during the stream. He entered the Billboard ‘Top 50’ on socials at #35, alongside Rihanna and Adele, and most importantly he raised awareness about the coronavirus issue in his home country and collected food and supplies for more than 20,000 families in Brazil.

An infectious club jam, ‘‘Rapture’ sees Alok and Daniel Blume kick off the new year in fine style.

The Hold Steady share new track ‘Heavy Covenant’

The Hold Steady have shared new song ‘Heavy Covenant’, the second track to be taken from forthcoming album ‘Open Door Policy’.

The new song follows last month’s album announcement and the band sharing first single ‘Family Farm’.

Singer Craig Finn described ‘Heavy Covenant’ as “a song about travel, technology, and human connection.”

“The song came out of two different music pieces that THS piano/keyboardist Franz Nicolay brought in, and with the help of producer Josh Kaufman, we combined them,” he explained.

“It came together quickly, and when our friends Stuart and Jordan came in and added the horns to the chorus it really seemed to bring it together. To us, this song is a great indication of where the band’s sound is at in 2021.”

Listen to ‘Heavy Covenant’ below.

Following on from last year’s ‘Thrashing Thru The Passion’, ‘Open Door Policy’ is due for release in February on the band’s Positive Jams label (via Thirty Tigers).

It was recorded at The Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, New York alongside producer Josh Kaufman and engineer D. James Goodwin. Musicians Stuart Bogie (Arcade Fire), Jordan McLean, Cassandra Jenkins, Annie Nero and Matt Barrick also contributed to the album.

Speaking on the new album in a press release, Finn said: “’Open Door Policy’ was very much approached as an album vs. a collection of individual songs, and it feels like our most musically expansive record.

“This album was written and almost entirely recorded before the pandemic started, but the songs and stories explore power, wealth, mental health, technology, capitalism, consumerism, and survival – issues which have compounded in 2020.”

‘Open Door Policy’ is available to pre-order from the Hold Steady website now.
