David Guetta looks back on his ‘Memories’ with Kid Cudi in new ‘2021 Remix’ – Dancing Astronaut

David Guetta swings back to simpler times, reinvigorating his decade-old collaboration alongside Kid Cudi with his 2021 rendition of “Memories.” The song’s original version (as well as Guetta’s “F*** Me I’m Famous ! Remix”) hit hard as clubbing staple back in 2009, but the tune’s viral nature in a string of recent TikTok videos argues that it may’ve never lost its step.

As the new remix title suggests, the French DJ didn’t do much to change the structural integrity of the original, but breathes new life into “Memories” with a future bass-inspired lead and a swelling bassline that pairs with Cudi’s vocals like a fine wine. Cudi’s ability to find a fitting home in dance and electro tracks is nothing new; the rapper’s “Day N Night” helped launch Italy’s Crookers to mainstream success all the way back in 2008.

Watch students play Metallica during university protests in Istanbul

Students at a university in Istanbul have used Metallica as the soundtrack to a protest – see footage below.

Students at Bogazici University in the Turkish city were demanding the resignation of their new loyalist president Melih Bulu.

Bulu, who was placed as head of the prestigious university by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is a known loyalist and member of the country’s conservative AK Party.

Though Bulu said he has no intention to change the culture of the institution, many students still called for his resignation at protests on campus on Wednesday (January 7).

The heavy metal soundtrack came due to a TV interview Bulu gave the day before the protests, in which he revealed that he is a Metallica fan.

See footage from the protests, which were soundtracked by the band’s hits ‘Master Of Puppets’, ‘Sad But True’ and more below, alongside Bulu’s interview where he said: “I am a rector who listens to hard rock, to Metallica.”

In other Metallica news, the band’s drummer Lars Ulrich has said that the band’s best album is still yet to come.

Speaking in a new interview, the drummer promised that follow-up to 2016’s ‘Hardwired…To Self-Destruct’ will be the best album that he and his bandmates have ever made.

“It’s the heaviest thing, the coolest,” Ulrich told Classic Rock. “But all kidding aside, if it wasn’t because we thought that the best record was still ahead of us, then why keep doing it?”

He added: “In Metallica, we love the creative process, and it’s hard for me to imagine that we’ll ever stop making records.”

Last November, Ulrich revealed that the band were a month into “pretty serious writing” for their next album.

“We’re three, four weeks into some pretty serious writing,” he said. “And of all the shit — pandemics, fires, politics, race problems, and just fucking looking at the state of the world — it’s so easy just to so fall into a depressive state. But writing always makes me feel enthusiastic about what’s next.”

What So Not Breathes New Life Into Run The Jewels’ “JU$T” [REMIX]

What So Not puts his spin on Run The Jewels‘ “JU$T” featuring Pharrell Williams and Zack de la Rocha, marking the producer’s first new material in 2021.

The song off RTJ4 is poetic and relevant, delivering raw, unfiltered lyrics on the structure of society and the struggles minorities face. For this new remix, the original heavy beat carried by Killer Mike and El-P is traded for a softer, melodic yet gritty production signature of What So Not. Same message, new energy.

What So Not shares of the release — “Starting as a bootleg, I was honoured to get the nod to put this record out, not only with RTJ, but also my childhood heroes Zack and Pharrell.”

The last we heard from the producer was “20:25” with Flux Pavilion featuring The Chain Gang of 1974. Perhaps this remix signals a big release year for What So Not — at least we hope.

A-Trak and Ferreck Dawn reconvene for ‘Coming Home’ follow-up, ‘My Own Way’ – Dancing Astronaut

A-Trak and Ferreck Dawn christen Fool’s Gold‘s 2021 slate with the label’s first release of the year, disseminating their second collaborative endeavor, “My Own Way.” The follow up to the pairing’s inaugural original production “Coming Home” arrives nearly a year apart from their joint debut, welcoming an upbeat sequel that showcases yet another facet of the two house stalwarts’ chemistry.

“My Own Way” takes residency as the ideal successor to A-Trak and Dawn’s first track, deriving similar elements like a soul-driven sample, disco-house grooves, and effervescent melodies. Bedazzled with uplifting string instrumentation and chiming synths, the four-on-the-floor production extends itself as a rich testament to the combined efforts of the two hitmakers.

“He wanted to be in control”

The wife and bandmates of late Rush drummer Neil Peart have discussed being asked to keep the legend’s health battles private in a new interview.

Peart passed away last January after quietly battling brain cancer for three years.

Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson and Peart’s wife Carrie Nuttall have now spoken to Rolling Stone to mark the one year anniversary of the drummer’s death yesterday (January 7).

In the interview, Lifeson said that Peart “asked us not to discuss [the illness] with anyone,” adding: “He just wanted to be in control of it. The last thing in the world he would want is people sitting on his sidewalk or driveway singing ‘Closer to the Heart’ or something.

“That was a great fear of his. He didn’t want that attention at all. And it was definitely difficult to lie to people or to sidestep or deflect somehow. It was really difficult.”

“He didn’t want to waste his remaining time talking about shit like that,” Lee added. “He wanted to have fun with us. And he wanted to talk about real things right up to the very end.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Lifeson spoke of how Peart spent his final days revisiting Rush’s material, and reflecting on his life in music.

“My guess is that he was just reviewing some of the things that he accomplished, in terms of music, anyways,” he said. “And I think he was a little surprised at how well it turned out. I think that happens, you kind of forget.

“It was interesting to see him smile and feel really good about that. And when he still could write to us, he wrote about how he was reviewing some of our older music and how it stood up for him.”

In the days following his death last year, Donna Halper – the woman credited with discovering Rush while working at an Ohio radio station back in 1974 – addressed rumours that Peart was unable to speak in the months prior to his death after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

“Sad to say, there are some rumors about Neil Peart’s final months circulating on social media,” she wrote on Twitter. “The vast majority are inaccurate. As for me, I choose to remember Neil as he was, and I want to respect his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

An NME obituary to Peart described him as “the professor of drums who weaved fantasy into rock”.

Dillon Francis Teams Up with Drove for Feelsy House Track “Places” [LISTEN]

Dillon Francis has kept the music flowing throughout quarantine — perhaps a time when we need it most — and he’s carrying the trend into 2021 with a brand new collab.

“Places” delivers a production that hits right in the feels, with Francis on the assist for a newly formed project Drove. The house song is light and airy, with a bumping beat and timely lyrics, providing a reflection on where we are, but also an escape.

Dillon shares his candid thoughts on the track: “Since you can’t go places just sit in your room and listen to places and hope that soon we can all go places.” We can all relate.

Teaming up on the release, STMPD RCRDS continues the introduction of Drove. The trio consists of mega-talented Dutch producers and songwriters, Jelmer ten Hoeve, Eli Salomons and Teun Wouters. Their forthcoming EP release is meant to “drive around, to disconnect, feel good and dream away to.”

Listen here and enjoy the ride!
