Watch Machine Gun Kelly perform a medley of ‘Tickets To My Downfall’ songs on ‘Kimmel’

Machine Gun Kelly has shared a medley of songs from latest album ‘Tickets to My Downfall’, while appearing as a musical guest on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’.

During the performance, MGK played snippets from album tracks ‘drunk face’, ‘all i know’ and ‘my bloody valentine’. He was a one-man band for the rendition, performing with a bright pink piano, guitar and sampler.

Watch the medley below:

‘Tickets to My Downfall’, MGK’s fifth studio album, arrived back in September of last year.

In a four-star review, NME praised the musician for helping to revitalise the pop-punk genre, calling it “boisterous, full of sincerity and exciting enough to make you jump on a table in the middle of a board meeting”.

“‘Tickets To My Downfall’ is an album that not only proves MGK can do whatever the hell he likes, but that also maybe pop-punk still has something important to offer the world.”

Earlier this week, MGK – aka Colson Baker – released a trailer for his forthcoming musical Downfalls High, based around ‘Tickets to My Downfall’.

Set to arrive January 15, the musical will be narrated by Baker and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, and will feature appearances from Trippie Redd, blackbear and more.

Speaking to NME for a Big Read cover feature last year, Baker described Downfalls High as a “pop-punk Grease“, confirming it was shot over four days with collaborator Mod Sun.

“It was almost like shooting 14 music videos back-to-back, but with a narrative that’s outside of my personal life stories,” the rapper explained.

“It focuses on other characters, and then me and [Travis Barker] are just the narrators. It’s an interesting concept because it hasn’t been done for an album ever, maybe outside of like Pink Floyd’s The Wall.”

Listen to 100 gecs’ remix of Linkin Park’s ‘One Step Closer’

100 gecs have offered their take on Linkin Park‘s classic ‘One Step Closer’ as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the nu metal band’s debut album, ‘Hybrid Theory’.

  • READ MORE: Mike Shinoda on writing an album on Twitch, 20 years of ‘Hybrid Theory’ and Chester Bennington’s voice

On their version, 100 gecs’ Dylan Brady and Laura Les transform the original’s raw aggression into a glitched hyper-pop explosion – without compromising its heaviness.

Billed as a ‘100 gecs Reanimation’, the song, according to a press release, marks the first in a slew of remixes of ‘Hybrid Theory’ tracks handled by more contemporary artists that will be released in the coming months.

Listen to ‘One Step Closer (100 gecs Reanimation)’ below:

“Part of the spirit of Reanimation was to take the ‘Hybrid Theory’ songs that people knew so well, and let innovative artists flip them in ways nobody expected,” Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda said of the song.

“I think 100 gecs did exactly that.”

In recently shared footage behind the making of the song, late Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington said, “The song itself is a very good representation of the group as far as the riffs and the power of the song, and the aggression of it.”

This isn’t the first time Linkin Park and 100 gecs have crossed paths. Earlier this week, Shinoda live-streamed himself remixing an existing remix of 100 gecs’ ‘Ringtone’, featuring Charli XCX, Rico Nasty and Kero Kero Bonito.

Shinoda previously revealed that he was lending his talents to produce fans’ music live on his Twitch channel, with the #ShinodaProduceMe initiative.

Slowthai taps A$AP Rocky for ‘MAZZA’ ahead of sophomore album’s release – Dancing Astronaut

UK rapper slowthai gears up for his sophomore album TYRON with its latest offering, “MAZZA.” The hip-hop cut instates the inaugural collaboration between the Northampton-bred artist and A$AP Rocky, who takes on the latter half of the track. TYRON will be available February 5 on Method/AWGE/Interscope.

Featuring production from slowthai and frequent collaborator SAMO, “MAZZA” follows previously released singles “feel away” with James Blake and Mount Kimbie and “nhs.” The forthcoming record will be presented in two thematic halves, with the Rocky-assisted track and its relatively harder-hitting stylization, landing on the first disc. “MAZZA” welcomes a dreamlike loop and crisp beat as slowthai conveys raw rapid-fire verses, contrasting with Rocky’s slick delivery.

Viagra Boys drop upbeat album cut ‘Girls & Boys’

Viagra Boys have released another satirical cut from their brand new album ‘Welfare Jazz’, a rhetoric track entitled ‘Girls & Boys’.

Dropping today (January 8) to coincide with the release of the Swedish band’s sophomore album, ‘Girls & Boys’ was produced by Matt Sweeney (Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Run The Jewels), Justin and Jeremiah Raisen (Sky Ferreira, Kim Gordon), and past collaborators Pelle Gunnerfeldt and Daniel “Fagge” Fagerström (The Hives, The Knife).

The song has been released alongside a live performance, filmed as part of Viagra Boys’ YouTube Shrimp Sessions 2 series.

Watch the live performance of ‘Girls & Boys’ below:

Videos for previously released album cuts also dropped in the run-up to the release of ‘Welfare Jazz’.

Along with Amy Taylor of Amyl and The Sniffers, Viagra Boys released a cover of the late John Prine‘s ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ last month. Before that, tracks ‘Creatures’ and ‘Ain’t Nice’ were also released.

In their four-star review of ‘Welfare Jazz’, NME said Viagra Boys were “leaning into the madness of the modern era”, adding that “satire’s the word here”.

Recently, the band confirmed they’ve already recorded the follow-up to ‘Welfare Jazz’, an album that seems to have been largely self-produced, according to bassist Henrik ‘Benke’ Höckert.

In an interview with the 101 Part Time Jobs podacast, Höckert said, “[We recorded it with] just a studio technician…. we wanted to try out to just do it ourselves. We rehearsed a lot before we recorded that one, so it’s gonna sound a little bit more live.

“I think we’re pretty good at the live show thing, so we’d like to bring that forward.”

[Interview] Whales Collabs With Excision On New Subsidia Release, “The Last Time”

Yesterday, Subsidia started 2021 off strong with their Dawn: Vol. 2 compilation, featuring 18 beautifully melodic and devilishly heavy bass songs. At the top of the compilation was Whales & Excision featuring RIELL with their new track, “The Last Time.”

We caught up with Whales to ask him some questions about the track and what he has in store for the year ahead.

Collaborating with Excision is on a lot of artists’ bucket lists — was it the same for you? How did you feel when you first got the opportunity?

Honestly, it felt surreal. I’m also the first middle eastern (Israeli) artist he has collaborated with. So I felt very lucky and happy that I could have a chance to create a piece of art with him, and now to see his amazing community react. It makes me happy to make so many people happy.

When I first realized I had the opportunity, I started something like 12 demos in the first 48 hours. I was so excited.

RIELL isn’t a name I’m familiar with, but she’s released with a huge number of artists, 24 tracks just in 2020 alone. How did you connect with her?

I’ve actually been writing a lot more vocal-focused music lately, and have been lucky to work with a lot of really amazing singers. I first heard Riell’s voice when we started The Last Time. I immediately fell in love with her vocals. They really made this song what it is. She’s a very talented and hardworking singer songwriter!

More vocal-focused music?

?

When producing something melodic like this versus something heavier, is there anything you do differently? Even like drinking tea versus coffee, changing the lights in your room, or what have you.

Melodic music is what I usually listen to, It’s what started my career back in the day as Sex Whales, and my fingerprint is really all about that. 2020 was a lot about heavy music, and touring (that got cut in the middle due to COVID-19) but as soon as I was taken out of the environment of live shows, I started to focus more on what felt most natural. Which is all sorts of melodic and pop music.

When I’m writing heavier stuff, I try to place myself in the perspective of someone on the dance floor, but with melodic songs, it’s pure emotion.

What can we expect from Whales the rest of 2021?

I learned so much about what I really want to do last year, and I’ve made hundreds of songs, in a ton of different styles.

2021 is looking super exciting already! I’ll be on Annie’s Show later this month on BBC Radio One (Jan 20th), I’m putting finishing touches on my first album which I can’t wait to share with everyone. Not sure if I was supposed to mention that, so I won’t say anything else.
