Oliver Heldens sets first HI-LO release loose from 2021 vault, ‘Athena’ – Dancing Astronaut

New year, new HI-LO.

After putting forth a handful of HI-LO originals in 2020, “Zeus” and “Kronos,” Oliver Heldens is once again bending to his alias’ underground sensibilities, this time with “Athena.” The first offering from the 2021 HI-LO vault, “Athena” delves into a brand of madly driving techno that stands in dark distinction from anything that’s surfaced under the Heldens moniker to date. That, of course, is by HI-LO design, and the hammering pulse of the side project, manifested in “Athena,” makes it clear that although HI-LO singles might have a history of being somewhat few and far in between, they never compromise on caliber.

Coronavirus vaccine conspiracy theorists mistake guitar pedal diagram for “5G chip”

An alleged “5G chip” that a number of conspiracy theorists have claimed is being planted in coronavirus vaccinations has been emphatically debunked, with the widely shared image of the “chip” in question turning out to be a diagram from a popular guitar pedal.

This vaccine conspiracy theory appears to have originated in Italy, with the heavily detailed diagram of the alleged “chip” – which contains the words “bass”, “treble” and “footswitch” – being shared on social media.

As MusicTech reports, Redhat senior software engineer Mario Fusco moved to debunk the conspiracy theory on December 28, writing: “Here in Italy, people started to share this figure claiming that this is the diagram of the 5G chip that has been inserted in the COVID vaccine.

“In reality, it is the electric circuit of a guitar pedal,” he continued, before joking: “I believe that putting it in the Covid vaccine has been an excellent idea.”

You can see the diagram in question above, which is actually the electric circuit for the Boss Metal Zone pedal.

Boss have not commented on the conspiracy theory, although there were a number of humorous responses to Fusco’s tweet – including from one Twitter user who wrote: “These people with their conspiracy theories are so tiresome, it’s always ‘wah -wah-wah’.”

Yesterday (January 5) the UK government announced a new set of one-off financial grants to help support retail, hospitality and leisure businesses during the latest coronavirus lockdown

Luhv x Colossus – Vortex (ft Realssm)

Breaks, a strong electronic backdrop, and even flute-inspired toplines all come to a graceful fruition on this glistening new collaboration between Colossus, Luhv and Realssm. The three upcoming acts are a unstoppable trio who deserve your attention in 2021 without a doubt and if “Vortex” doesn’t prove that after listening below then I don’t know what you tell you. Stream the collab after the jump and under that read a quote from Luhv on the track! Enjoy.

VORTEX started from a recording/jam session some friends and I were having at the house. Our good friend Quinn recorded some quick guitar chords that laid down the melodic foreground for the idea. Shortly after we added some chords from the prophet and some bass stabs using the SH 101. I always have more fun starting with analog. I’ve found its very easy to get in a groove and transform a simple jam into a promising idea without overthinking it. After organizing the takes we added drums and completed the arrangement. The song was sounding nice but it was in need of a lead to tie the mix together.

The next day I showed the idea to my friend Sergio Flores aka Realssm and we both agreed it could use some flute! Realssm is one of the most talented musicians I know and his flute recordings always add some much needed spice.

A big part of my sound is tying together live instrumentation with electronic synthesis. I love mixing up the sonic space to give the track some soul. So many tracks I hear now are written in the daw w/ perfectly quantized notes and very little sonic variation. My goal with my sound is to bring back a live feel to Electronic music. I’m excited to share this EP with my listeners because I feel it captures that energy perfectly.Luhv

Alice Glass shares stop-motion video for new track ‘Suffer and Swallow’

Former Crystal Castles singer Alice Glass has debuted new track ‘SUFFER AND SWALLOW’, the first single from her upcoming debut album, which is set to arrive later this year.

The self-produced track comes accompanied by a stop-motion video from director Lucas David – which sees Glass represented as a doll who finds herself in a series of increasingly sinister scenarios.

It’s the first release from the Canadian singer since August last year, when she released the Jupiter-Keyes produced track ‘NIGHTMARES’ for a compilation by experimental label Sermon 3 Recordings.

Glass’ forthcoming debut album follows the release of her debut eponymous EP in 2017, as well as several singles including 2018’s ‘Mine’ and ‘Cease & Desist’.

Last year, Glass encouraged fans to stream her solo music,  and claimed she was being “gutted” over royalty payments from music by Crystal Castles.

She announced her departure from the duo in 2014. In 2017, she then shared a statement accusing her former bandmate Ethan Kath of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse.

After denying the claims, Kath then responded by suing Glass for defamation. Glass revealed back in 2018 that the lawsuit had been dismissed.

“apparently there’s some rumor being spread that I receive all the royalties from Crystal Castles music,” Glass last October, before clarifying: “I DONT. in fact, I’m being gutted. STREAM ALICE GLASS.”

A release date for Glass’ debut album is yet to be announced.

Dr. Dre shares health update after hospitalisation over suspected brain aneurysm

Dr. Dre has taken to social media to assure fans he’s “doing great”, following reports he was hospitalised and taken to an intensive care unit after a suspected brain aneurysm.

On Instagram, the hip-hop mogul thanked family, friends and fans “for their interest and well wishes”. He wrote that he was “doing great and getting excellent care from my medical team.”

“I will be out of the hospital and back home soon,” he wrote. “Shout out to all the great medical professionals at Cedars. One Love!!”

See his post below:

TMZ broke the news on Tuesday (January 5), citing “sources connected to Dre and with direct knowledge”. A crime reporter with the Los Angeles Times also reported that the 55-year-old had been hospitalised at Cedars-Sinai.

TMZ reported that Dr. Dre remained in intensive care today and was “stable and lucid”. Doctors are yet to determine the cause of the bleeding and are continuing to run tests on the rapper-cum-entrepreneur, they reported.

Dr. Dre is in the middle of divorce proceedings with Nicole Young, to whom he was married for 24 years. They are reportedly due to attend a hearing Wednesday (January 6) in Los Angeles.

Last month, it was reported that Dr. Dre’s new album was finished. The record would be Dre’s first since he released ‘Compton’ in 2015.

Detroit rapper Page Kennedy hinted that Dre’s longtime friend and collaborator, Eminem, will make an appearance on the new record. Dr. Dre is yet to confirm the album’s release date.

Fellow artists including Ice Cube, Kaytranada, DJ Paul and Ciara, among others, have since wished for Dre’s speedy recovery. Rapper LL Cool J has also tweeted that Dre is “recovering nicely”.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
