Staffordshire man legally changes name to Celine Dion during boozy night at home

A Staffordshire man formerly known as Thomas Dodd has discovered he legally changed his name to Celine Dion during a boozy night at home.

In an interview with The New York Post, the 30-year-old self-confessed superfan said he had spent much of lockdown watching Cline Dion concerts at home. It was while watching one particular show on Christmas Eve with a magnum of champagne that the drunken idea struck him, forking out £89 for the online application.

“I honestly, hand on heart, don’t remember doing it!” he told The New York Post. “I remember watching the concert and remember getting rather tipsy.”

It wasn’t until days later when the official documents turned up in his mailbox that he realised what had happened, and that he had legally renamed himself after the iconic Canadian singer.

“I wasn’t aware I had done it until I found that envelope in my post,” he explained. “Initially, I had to sit down as I couldn’t believe it – so I then checked my bank which confirmed it all.”

“Once it sunk in, I signed it straight away as I bloody love her!” he said.

Dion revealed the escapade on his personal Twitter account, where he shared photos of the documents.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, Dion said he was “glad it’s entertaining people”.

“Hopefully it will give people a laugh even if it is at my expense.”

He added that he’s in no hurry to change it back and is interested to see what kind of perks will come with being Celine Dion.

“I’m a little concerned that if I start telling people my name is Celine Dion I’ll get sectioned. However, it may come with its perks,” he told Birmingham Live.

“I tried singing Celine in the shower this morning and I can assure everyone I haven’t inherited her voice or bank balance. If this gets to Celine someone best make sure I have a defibrillator next to me.”

As for the Canadian singer Celine Dion, her last album release was 2019’s ‘Courage’. The record suffered the biggest fall for an album debuting at Number One on Billboard’s history after plummeting out of the top 100.

The singer was scheduled for a UK arena tour in 2020, but the shows were postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The tour is now expected to kick off in the coming spring.

Nearly 2,500 Attend Illegal New Year’s Eve Rave, Provoke Curfew in France

While French citizens have been subject to steep fines and a strict curfew since the March 2020 onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the underground electronic music scene has largely disregarded these regulations—with varying success. But as of January 1st, 2021, law enforcement has decided enough is enough, reportedly pushing up nighttime curfews in 15 of the country’s 101 administrative departments from 8PM to 6PM.

Prince estate undervalued by $80million, US tax agency claims

The US tax agency has valued Prince‘s estate at 50 per cent higher than proposed by the administrator, causing more legal trouble for the estate’s settlement.

As reported by the Star Tribune, the Internal Revenue Service has valued Prince’s estate at £119.4million (US$163.2million), significantly higher than the £60.2million (US$82.3million) valuation from Comerica Bank & Trust, the estate’s administrator.

The discrepancy between the two figures primarily involves the singer’s music publishing and recording interests. Specifically, a $15million difference of opinion in the fair market value of Prince’s ownership of NPG Music Publishing, as well as an $11million valuation gap in his interest in his music compositions.

Because of this new valuation, the IRS has claimed the estate owes an additional $32.4million in taxes, approximately doubling the tax bill. The government agency has also issued a $6.4million “accuracy-related penalty” on Prince’s estate, according to court documents.

Speaking to the Star Tribune, Dennis Patrick, an estate planning attorney not involved with the proceedings, described valuing large estates as “way more of an art than a science”.

“What we have here is a classic battle of the experts – the estate’s experts and the IRS’ experts,” Patrick said.

“It could be several years before they get this worked out if they don’t agree to a settlement. It depends on how hard the IRS is digging in its heels.”

Prince died in 2016 from an overdose, leaving behind no will. In the years since his death, the exact valuation of the singer’s estate remains up for debate. While the singer’s heirs have yet to benefit from the estate, the Associated Press reports bankers, consultants and lawyers have earned millions from it.

Jean-Michel Jarre performs VR show inside virtual Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral [Watch] – Dancing Astronaut

On New Year’s Eve, electronic veteran Jean-Michel Jarre returned for a highly unique digital concert. Titled “Welcome To The Other Side,” the performance was filmed in a French studio but broadcast live in virtual reality (VR) inside a digital rendering of the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. Viewers could either tune in using VR or watch the set as a video on any device. Of the medium, Jarre said,

“Virtual reality is to the performing arts today what cinema was to the theatre in its early days, a kind of curiosity. I believe that VR will become tomorrow, a mode of expression in its own right.”

Jarre’s stint largely comprised tracks from his 2015 Grammy-nominated record Electronica 1: The Time Machine, but also included reworked tracks from Oxygène and Equinoxe. The impressive visuals include live footage of Jarre himself and footage of an avatar copying his live playing, a combination that marks a first for livestreamed VR shows. Welcome To The Other Side is available to relive in VR until January 4. Learn how to stream the set in VR here, or watch the performance below.

Brockhampton appear to be teasing something new in Instagram video

Brockhampton appear to be teasing a new release on their Instagram page, with a new video hinting at new music.

The group last released an album with ‘Ginger’ in 2019, which followed their earlier ‘Saturation’ series.

Yesterday (January 2), Brockhampton shared a new video on their Instagram page. It opened with an old computer screen being zoomed into as a cursor was faced with two options: “new light” or “old light”.

When “new light” was selected, the image of a person hurtling through a tunnel and landing in a cave appeared. Blue silhouettes sprung up around them while a snippet of new music played. “Who let the dope boys out?” Was the only lyric included in the clip.

As the video finished, the words “The light is worth the wait” appeared on the screen. Watch the video below now.

While the band have yet to announce a new record, member Romil Hemnani told i-D last month they were “working on an album”. “I can’t say much about it, but I can say that the initials of it are ‘RR’,” he said.

“Maybe the fans will figure out what it is. I’m excited about it, it’s my favourite one yet.”

Despite not releasing an album since ‘Ginger’, Brockhampton shared a steady stream of new music in 2020. Their most recent drop included a collaboration with JPEGMAFIA on ‘chain on /hold me’.

The group are also set to perform in Barcelona later this year after being confirmed as part of Primavera Sound Festival’s line-up for 2021. They will join the likes of The Strokes, Gorillaz, Tame Impala and Tyler, The Creator at the event between June 2-6.

SoundCloud has delivered its 2020 Playback list, a comprehensive throwback to the top-played artists, songs, and, of course, DJ mixes from the late year. It comes as no surprise that RL Grime‘s latest Halloween mix installment, “Halloween IX,” reigns as the most-streamed mix of the past year, according to the annual review.

Featuring cameos from none other than T-Pain, and as always, Grime’s namesake, Goosebumps author RL Stein, the mix rinsed tracks and IDs from Sable Valley mainstays such as Kumarion, Juelz, and Heimanu, as well as from talent beyond Grime’s imprint, including DROELOE, Hudson Mohawke, and Baauer. SoundCloud’s 2020 Playback also spotlights the platform’s most-played artists, such as Mexico’s rising star, Natanael Cano, 100 Gecs, Beabadoobee, and Rema, all of whom sat at the top of SoundCloud’s list of artists to watch in 2019.

Kings Of Leon tease more new material, including ‘Spin It Like We Can’

Kings Of Leon have shared a teaser previewing yet another two new songs – listen to snippets of ‘Dancing In Your Head’ and ‘Spin It Like We Can’ below.

  • READ MORE: Kings Of Leon – Their 10 best songs

The band, who haven’t released any official new material since 2016’s ‘Walls’, teased the imminent release of two new songs called ‘Must Catch The Bandit’ and ‘Feel The Way You Do’ this week.

Now, they’ve shared teasers for ‘Dancing In Your Head’ and ‘Spin It Like We Can’ on Instagram. The other two teased tracks will arrive next week (January 7) though no release date has yet been shared for the newest songs.

Listen to them below.

“Blame it on the holiday ‘cheer’, but I just feel like sharing,” the band’s bassist Jared Followill tweeted on Christmas Day (December 25) when sharing the first teasers.

He added: “@kingsofleon tweeted ‘the w8 is nearly over’ TEN MONTHS ago. Enough,” hinting that the band’s eighth album is on the horizon.

Despite no official releases arriving in the last four years, in March the band shared a live recording of a new song called ‘Going Nowhere’. The performance was recorded in their hometown of Nashville and featured only frontman Caleb Followill on acoustic guitar.

Meanwhile, Kings Of Leon were due to play their first London show since 2017 this summer, but were forced to cancel it by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Reviewing the band’s last album, 2016’s ‘Walls’, NME wrote: “The Followills have remembered how much they like giant choruses and on ‘Walls’ have written 10 of them.

“‘Walls’ just feels fresh. Kings Of Leon were great as a cult band, and great as a stadium band. It doesn’t matter which they do, just as long as they do it with conviction. And here they sound more focused and alive than they have for a while.”

Alternative Version of ‘Avicii: True Stories’ Documentary Appears Online [WATCH]

A scrapped, 50-minute version of Avicii‘s documentary True Stories has made its way online via YouTube channel The Avicii Archives, revealing never-before-seen footage of the late producer.

Director Levan Tsikurishvili, Avicii’s longtime collaborator and friend, collected years worth of recordings to bring True Stories to life. If you’ve seen the film, it’s both inspiring and heart-wrenching; a candid look at the highs and lows of Avicii’s superstardom and the man behind it all, Tim Bergling.

Tsikurishvili previously shared of the project:

I wanted to do a brutally honest film about Tim as a person and not only about Avicii. Everybody knows Avicii but very few people know Tim. I think this documentary really shows Tim’s struggle and strength of character. Being a worldwide superstar artist is not as easy as it looks on Instagram.

Playing back this version of the documentary, the differences are apparent immediately and the pacing is much faster, with heavy emphasis on the writing process. Although we love the way the final came together, this is a must-see for any Avicii fan.
