Ja Rule has recalled the struggles he endured when trying to get his supergroup with Jay-Z and DMX off the ground.
In 1995, the ‘Livin’ It Up’ rapper joined forces with Jay and X to form the group Murder Inc. – a name which was later used for the Ja’s record label. The trio made their debut on Mic Geronimo’s ‘Time To Build’, taken from the New York rapper’s debut album, ‘The Natural’.
The group would go on to connect, in variations, on several tracks throughout the 90s (most notably ‘It’s Murda’ and ‘Murdagram’), but they never fully realised their potential or released an official project.
Speaking in a new interview, Ja talked about why the group never managed to get off the ground, even with all the hype surrounding them, explaining that there was never a real conversation about an album.
“We knew what was going on, but it was kind of like pulling teeth to get it done,” Ja told HipHopDX, after being asked if they knew record executive Irv Gotti was trying to put a group together officially.
“Jay and X, you couldn’t get them in the same room together,” Ja continued, referring to the the pair’s once-complicated relationship, adding that the reason for the group not developing was more to do with ego than money.
“I was the new artist, so that was an honour for me to be able to walk with those dudes,” he added. “I’d known them before they were who they were and it was like, ‘Okay, I’m rhyming with my partners. My homies.’”

Meanwhile, Jay-Z has continued his foray into the marijuana industry, becoming the Chief Visionary Officer of a new cannabis company.
Last month, the rapper revealed his new new cannabis brand called Monogram, and was named Chief Brand Strategist for California-based cannabis company Caliva last year.
The deal comes as the SPAC have acquired Caliva and another company called Left Coast Ventures, a cannabis and hemp producer. They will all come under the umbrella of the TPCO Holding Corp, of which Jay-Z will be Chief Visionary Officer.
Billboard describe the new deal, which also extends to artists that work with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation management company, as “a corporate venture fund that will invest in Black and minority-owned cannabis businesses and contribute to progressive criminal justice initiatives”.
Flume hasn’t had many releases in 2020 — when does he ever, though? — but he just teased a new unreleased treat on Instagram stories that we need… yesterday.
New Flume never fails to put a smile on our faces, and this one is enough to give us Joker-like scares from the width of our grin. With all the penchants of great Flume songs, including the modulated and chopped vocal melodies, to the slowly building suspenseful synths in the background, to the chopped synths in the drop. This one sounds like a chill Flume tune that could be bumped endlessly.
Stay tuned for more Flume content in 2021. He promised a lot of new music at the beginning of the year but obviously with COVID-19, everyone’s plans have changed a bit.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, especially when San Holo releases new music.
To celebrate the holidays this year, the future bass titan dropped a new remix of Wham!‘s “Last Christmas.” Santa Holo San Holo flipped the 1984 holiday classic into a melodic trap tune with a cinematic feel, using acoustic guitar plucks and lush synths to flesh out the track’s backbone. Its drops are produced in half-time, making the arrangement perfect for his nuanced future bass design to shine through.
This sound is a prime example of San’s “stay vibrant” branding, which is highlighted by warm, poignant sound design and overarching messages of positivity. It’s a sound that his fans have welcomed with open arms amid a year to forget. Check out his “Last Christmas” remix below.
In a year devoid of live shows, San Holo has dropped a ton of new music for his fans. Back in April, he released his 7-track stay vibrantrecord. Later in 2020, he shared free remixes of Sheck Wes‘ inescapable hip-hop banger “Mo Bamba,” Frank Ocean‘s “White Ferrari,” and Soulja Boy‘s notorious “Crank That.” San’s latest release “bb u ok?” arrived in early December and doubled as a celebration of his momentous signing to Counter Records.
Following the success of his debut album, HALLELUJAH!, Nashville-based producer Super Duper decided to celebrate by performing some of the LP’s standout tracks around his home city. Premiered on Space Yacht‘s weekly Twitch livestream, the live outing, “TRILOGY,” represents his sonically pleasing sound and elevates the 2020 project’s luminescent visuals.
Filmed in three locations, ranging from an open field in the outskirts of Nashville to a rooftop overlooking the city and an abandoned warehouse with LED lighting and effects, TRILOGY will absorb viewers with its varying settings and finales as it focalizes Super Duper’s unwavering creativity. HALLELUJAH! is the culmination of the years Super Duper has spent crafting his sound and honing a sonic vision. The LP follows strong results from a string of projects over the years, with his unique, vibrant production style reaching the ears of big name brands including Peloton, Google, ESPN, Lexus, and more for various campaign soundtracks.

Run The Jewels have shared a teaser for their forthcoming ‘Walking In The Snow’ video, which sees Killer Mike and El-P become action figures – watch it below.
‘Walking In The Snow’ is taken from the duo’s recent LP ‘RTJ4’, which was named NME‘s album of the year for 2020 earlier this month.
The new video for ‘Walking In The Snow’ is set to land next week (December 29), and the teaser takes the form of a fake commercial, in which action figures of Mike and El are up for sale.
“If you like ‘RTJ4’, then you’re gonna love RTJ action figures,” a voiceover says, before promising “catchphrases you love” and “multiple poses”.
Watch the ‘Walking In The Snow’ video teaser and get in line for the video premiere on YouTube below.
Reacting to news of winning NME‘s album of the year award while on Zoom call, Killer Mike said: “Get the fuck outta here! That’s amazing!” before EL-P quipped: “Suck our fucking dicks, Grammys!”
Writing about the list-topping ‘RTJ4’, NME‘s Carl Anka said: “In a year where most of our social interactions happened through a screen, RTJ4 felt like a wake-up punch to the face and a shot of tequila from your reckless best friend.
“Rapper Killer Mike and producer/rapper El-P tore through police brutality, hatred-stoking media outlets and white supremacists with gatling gun-levels of devastation across a propulsive, electrifying effort that was loud as cannons.
“It made you want to sprint into the unknown. A lot of us screamed into our pillows in anger this year, but Run The Jewels channelled that emotion to make an instant rap classic.”
Watch the duo’s reaction to winning the accolade in full below:
Earlier this month (December 2), Run The Jewels teamed up with Royal Blood on a new version of ‘RTJ4’ track ‘The Ground Below’.
“Royal Jewels is the ultimate dream come true scenario,” explained Royal Blood. “It’s an alliance we wish long continues.”
I think we’re all glad that 2020 is coming to an end. One person who might want to keep it going, though, is Oliver Heldens. The Dutch producer/DJ has had a massive year, releasing 22 original tracks and remixes under both his own name and his Hi-Lo alias. He’s been a fixture on live streams presenting some of the most unique performances of the year. He was named the top producer of the year by 1001Tracklists and he came in at #8 in the DJ Mag Poll. He also founded a second record label, OH2, to showcase more commercial music.
Enter his latest and final single of 2020, “Freedom For My People.” Oliver once again teams up with American-Zimbabwean vocalist Shungudzo for this one, you might recognize her from her previous collab with Oliver, “Fire In My Soul.” Whereas that song was a massive dancefloor heater, “Freedom For My People” has a much more epic and broad scale to it.
Based on an acapella poem written by Shungudzo back in March when the pandemic began, her urgent vocals arrive at just the perfect time. As for the production, this is the Oliver Heldens we know and love. There are those beautiful piano melodies, some awesome percussion, a vivid house vibe, and a groove that’s undeniable.
Check out the latest from Oliver Heldens & Shungudzo, “Freedom For My People” out now on OH2. Check out Oliver’s live stream from the Eifel Gran Prix After Party as well.
Coming soon to the airwaves is “Channel 43,” the first new collaboration from deadmau5 and Wolfgang Gartner in almost a decade. Immediately made clear to fans from its title, the new song is a sequel to their 2012 hit “Channel 42,” which appeared on deadmau5’s > album title goes here <.
A short teaser video was shared on the mau5trap Twitter account, announcing the new song to the world. While you can only hear 15 seconds of music, considering each of their resumes and history working together, it’s easy to see that the duo is onto something special once again.
Also revealed in the tweet is the fact that Gartner will be joining the mau5 at his Insomniac-hosted drive-in show in San Bernardino, California on January 3rd. Tickets are currently still available but fans have been warned that supplies are running low.
A few days ago, Gartner shared a teaser video similar to the announcement featuring a TV with no signal that briefly flashes a picture of a mau5head. While subtle, no one missed the subliminal message, and waves of excitement about the return of the longtime collaborators naturally began.
It’s unclear when “Channel 43” will be released, but many fans have mentioned January 7th as the release date. However, this cannot be confirmed at the time of this article’s publishing. In the meantime, you can pre-save the duo’s upcoming single here.
What So Not and San Holo went head to head last week as the final competitors on Brownies & Lemonade‘s Beat Smash series. The series has offered a fun and playful environment for industry names to host a little friendly competition, with artists playing their own hits, remixes, edits, unreleased IDs, and even composing beats in real time.
Starting off the rivalry, San Holo treated viewers to an unreleased edit, earning a heartfelt compliment from What So Not and replying with an equally moving, “Thanks, man. I love you.” It’s evident that this “rivalry” was still coated in a firm sense of community and appreciation. With the following tracks creating more and more fan enjoyment, the two venerated producers were the perfect choice to close out the series.
Since its inception, Beat Smash has seen performances from the likes of lauded acts such as QUIX, Juelz, TYNAN, Blanke, and many more. Check out the finale below.
