Glastonbury asks for government support to cover coronavirus insurance

Glastonbury Festival organiser Emily Eavis has appealed to the government to provide “direct financial support” for the planned 2021 event, due to continued uncertainty surrounding live events in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The festival’s General Counsel Ben Challis and Eavis herself have both maintained that plans remain in place for Glastonbury to go be staged in June 2021.

However, Eavis and her father Michael have said it’s “already getting tight” to prepare for next year’s event because insurers are still cautious about offering cancellation cover – potentially putting millions of pounds in revenue at stake, which the organisers say they cannot afford to lose.

Speaking to The Times, Emily said: “In a usual planning cycle we would already be well into organising the next festival.

“The best solution would be for the government to offer direct financial support in the event of Glastonbury, and other events, being forced to cancel once they’re well into the preparations.

“If the government can share the risk by offering direct financial support, then it gives everyone the opportunity to move forward with the planning in the hope that things will be safe to run in the summer, and in the knowledge that backing is available if we’re simply not in a position to go ahead,” she added.

Deposits have rolled over from last year’s event, which did not go ahead, when over 135,000 people paid £50 to secure their place at the festival.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said: “We know these are challenging times for the live events sector and are working flat out to support it. We have invested £1bn so far through the culture recovery fund to protect tens of thousands of creative jobs… with £400m more support still to come.”

Last month (November 13), Paul McCartney revealed that he had planned to invite Taylor Swift on stage with him at Glastonbury 2020 to play ‘Shake It Off’ together.

The pair were set to headline the Pyramid Stage at this year’s festival, before it was eventually called off as the Covid-19 pandemic continued.

Ashanti tests positive for coronavirus just hours before ‘VERZUZ’ battle with Keyshia Cole

Ashanti revealed she tested positive for the coronavirus just a few hours before her VERZUZ battle with Keyshia Cole.

The pair were due to go head-to-head last night (December 12) as part of the popular virtual entertainment series created by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland.

However, after the former Murder Inc. singer revealed she had tested positive for COVID-19, the scheduled face off was postponed – even though Ashanti appeared to be trying to make her side of the event happen from home.

“Hey y’all I can’t believe I’m saying this but I tested positive for COVID-19. I’m ok and not in any pain. I’m actually down to do the verzuz from my house… we’re tring to figure it all out!!!” Ashanti wrote on Instagram.

Less than an hour later, the official VERZUZ account confirmed the event was being postponed.

“Unfortunately, we have to postpone tonight’s @Ashanti vs @KeyshiaCole #VERZUZ,” the message began. “Ashanti tested positive for COVID-19 beforehand, and we cannot put anyone at risk in the process. First time this has struck us so close to showtime.

“We apologize to our incredible audience! Get well soon, Ashanti. Wear a mask, stay inside, and take COVID-19 seriously. It’s truly affecting our community.”

The battle has now been rescheduled to take place on January 9, 2021.

Following the news, Ashanti posted a video message. “We all go through lessons in life… and hopefully this serves as a lesson that this pandemic is very real,” she said.

“Thank you guys so much for all of your love and prayers…Thank you to everyone supporting the verzuz… much love to @keyshiacole and we’ll see y’all on January 9th!!! 2021 Women Empowerment.”

VERZUZ is the popular entertainment series that pits producers, songwriters and artists against each other in a rap battle style format on Instagram Live and Apple Music.

Competitors take it in turns playing a song from a list of 20 from their discography, as fans, friends and fellow artists watch on. A winner is later decided by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.

Kicking off in March after Timbaland and Swizz Beatz issued challenges to one another, artists that have taken part so far have included: T-Pain, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Brandy, Monica, Rick Ross, DMX, Snoop Dogg and many more.

Charley Pride, pioneering African-American country singer, dies from COVID-19 complications

Trailblazing African-American country musician Charley Pride has passed away in Dallas, Texas at age 86.

Pride’s publicist confirmed that Pride’s death on December 12 had been attributed to coronavirus complications.

Pride gave his final public performance at the Country Music Association Awards on November 11. Following claims that Pride may have been exposed to COVID-19 at the indoor event, the CMA Awards issued a statement.

“Everyone affiliated with the CMA Awards followed strict testing protocols outlined by the city health department and unions,” the statement read.

“Charley was tested prior to traveling to Nashville. He was tested upon landing in Nashville, and again on show day, with all tests coming back negative. After returning to Texas following the CMA Awards, Charley again tested negative multiple times.

“All of us in the country music community are heartbroken by Charley’s passing. Out of respect for his family during their grieving period, we will not be commenting on this further.”

Born in 1934, Pride was the first African-American inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

He enjoyed considerable chart success during his heyday, scoring 52 Top Ten hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. ‘Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’’, ‘Why Baby Why’ and ‘Night Games’ were among Pride’s 29 songs to reach Number One on that chart.

Pride also earned four Grammy Awards throughout his career, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Pride was notable for performing in Belfast at the height of The Troubles, when many international artists chose to bypass the city on their tours.

In his home country, he was a distinguished advocate for African-American rights.

“We’re not color blind yet, but we’ve advanced a few paces along the path and I like to think I’ve contributed something to that process,” Pride wrote in his memoir, 2017’s Pride: The Charley Pride Story.

Pride was also a talented baseball player in his youth, earning professional contracts during the 1950s.

Billy Ray Cyrus, Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire are among the musicians to have paid tribute to Pride following his passing.

In lieu of flowers, Pride’s family request that those wishing to honour the singer’s memory donate to The Pride Scholarship at Jesuit College Preparatory School, St. Philips School and Community Centre.

DJ Snake and Malaa split the decks again for an ID-filled Secret Room back-to-back stream [Watch] – Dancing Astronaut

DJ Snake and Malaa were robbed of the opportunity to follow up their HARD Summer back-to-back at Ultra’s return to Bayfront Park, but the Pardon My French allies haven’t let the COVID-19 pandemic get in the way of them making up for it. After sharing the decks for their Best Of Both Worlds stream at summer’s waning moments, DJ Snake and Malaa surprised everyone by setting up round two, and their 40-minute stream, dubbed “Secret Room,” is now officially available to relive.

From KOHMI and KinAhau’s spellbinding introduction to Bleu Clair and OOTORO’s must-hear ID to a heap of other new and soon-to-be released Confession music, DJ Snake and Malaa delivered over and above again, with dark theatrics and top-tier production to live up to the “Secret Room” headline.

Rico Nasty to release ‘Nightmare Vacation’-themed comic book

Rico Nasty is releasing a comic book to celebrate the arrival of her debut album, ‘Nightmare Vacation’.

The rapper shared excerpts of the comic, titled Nightmare Vacay, on her Instagram. The book itself is written by Rico and comic creator Jarrett Williams, with colouring by Aladdin Collar.

“Rico Nasty is deep in space recording her latest album. Unfortunately, an accidental cannabis nap sends her spaceship, CAM, crashing onto Earth!” the book’s description reads.

“Waking up at a soulless android facility, she’ll have to survive on noodles while searching for her missing ship – but at least she has the help of her new, dope girlfriends, Taco Bella & Trap Levigne.

“Together, they’ll battle countless androids while trying to find CAM and finish her new album.”

Nightmare Vacay comes with either a light purple or black cover, and will be sent out in January through Z2 Comics.

Rico Nasty released ‘Nightmare Vacation’ earlier this month. NME gave the record a four-star review upon its release, writing that “the frenetic Maryland artist will not be restrained by any boundaries – genre, social or otherwise – as this thrilling, wildly charged, star-stuffed debut proves.”

‘Nightmare Vacation’ also landed in the top 50 best albums of 2020, according to NME.

Pollstar: Live Events Industry Lost Over $30 Billion Globally in 2020

The live events industry reportedly lost over $30 billion globally in 2020.

Pollstar has published its year-end review for 2020, which details startling statistics amid the global pandemic. What was projected to be a trailblazing year for live entertainment, including massive concert tours and box office success, has amounted to an over $30 billion loss — a figure derived by the 10.92% year-over-year growth rate recorded for Q1.

Pollstar shares:

2020* will forever have a huge, indelible asterisk beside it. It will serve as a stark reminder that the most challenging year our industry has ever endured was an anomaly, an aberration, a pox on our businesses, one that deviated widely from all norms and can’t be over fast enough.

When the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic arose and festival postponements began, we all knew the music industry, particularly live events, would experience a major blow. As the months went on, postponements turned into cancellations and dates shifted from 2020 into 2021 and into 2022. Now, these numbers reveal the financial impact and adversity the live events industry faces.

Pollstar‘s comprehensive review includes a 2020 Business Analysis: What Might Have Been Vs. What Was. Plus, 2020 Year-End Charts for tours, livestreams, and much more.
