Tate McRae confronts heartbreak on new single ‘r u ok’

Rising Canadian musician Tate McRae has shared her new single ‘r u ok’, you can watch the official video below.

The smooth and assured new track is McRae’s first new material since her collaboration with Ali Gatie ‘Lie To Me’, which appeared in October.

McRae said of the track: “‘r u ok’ is a song that I never thought I’d write. It has a very sassy and feisty tone, which made it a challenge to dive into that perspective – as I think I’m quite the opposite.

“I love that in this song there is a lot of emotional meaning behind the lyrics, with very trappy, bright and contrasting production at the same time.”

Earlier this week, meanwhile, McRae delivered a striking live performance of her breakthrough single ‘You Broke Me First’ at the MTV EMAs 2020.

McRae was among the live performers at the ceremony, which was filmed in a number of locations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

McRae gave her performance in London, delivering a slickly choreographed rendition of her viral single ‘You Broke Me First’. That song was released back in April, following on from the January release of her debut EP ‘All The Things I Never Said’.

deadmau5 and Kiesza Tap Tommy Trash for Enchanting Remix of “Bridged By a Lightwave”

Last month, deadmau5 and Kiesza shared their glowing collaboration “Bridged By a Lightwave” followed by an incredible live music video. In the midst of the single’s surging popularity, the pair recently announced that renowned house producer Tommy Trash would be providing an official rework of their tune. Today, he’s delivered his remix via mau5trap

Tommy Trash’s remix of “Bridged By a Lightwave” is downright enchanting. It feels like a natural progression for the song, shrewdly using the bones of the original to reimagine the track while fully embracing his own sound. Kiesza’s haunting voice remains completely untouched, as the Australian dance music vet has stripped back the fluttery elements for sporadic synth trills and a pounding bassline. Tommy Trash’s skills as a beatmaker are indisputable, and this remix only reinforces that notion.

Listen to Tommy Trash’s remix of “Bridged By a Lightwave” below.

Four Tet, Burial, and Thom Yorke’s unexpected new singles hits streaming services – Dancing Astronaut

Burial, Four Tet, and Thom Yorke stole the headlines last week when an unexpected and unlabeled double-sided release found its way to a handful of London’s record stores. Today, however, the release has made its way to digital and streaming services across the web.

Titled Her Revolution / His Rope, the new material builds on the dim and melodic ethos of trio’s first joint release almost a decade ago, but supplements some of the previous dancefloor energy with soft piano tones and expansive ambience. At a first glance, the new efforts seem to be carried by Yorke’s signature ethereal vocals and Burial’s artifact-ridden grit, but an informed ear will quickly unveil the intricacies that make this release worth exploring time and time again.

Although the first pressing of Her Revolution / His Rope sold out in minutes, Four Tet has put on the record that there are more copies of the 12″ on the way. Those who simply want to hear the release can listen in to the tracks below.

Axel Thesleff – 2 Down

Axel Thesleff recently put out an uplifting melodic bass infused single and music video for a track called “2 Down” and it’s a feel good track that is much needed with everything going on in the world right now. The single represents letting go of the cycle of negativity to welcome one’s inner light and forgiveness. Ethereal vocals and synths in flux pair with a mother’s journey through meadows and streams of Lapland as she overcomes the worst of sufferings and finds a gratitude towards life. Check out a quote from Axel on the release and the visual below, under that watch the video for “2 Down “. Enjoy!

“The 2 Down music video depicts a journey of a lonely backpacker in a vast, dreamlike landscape of a never-ending mountain range. The traveler seems to be completely lost in thought. Painful memories start to arise from the past and she is forced to dive into them. She must fight the demons of guilt, blame, and sorrow within in order to break free from this mental dissonance and find forgiveness, acceptance, and gratitude to replace them. The story is about overcoming the worst of sufferings and clearing one’s mind from agony. It’s about facing one’s deepest fears and painful emotions head-on and growing from them as a person. No one is perfect and sometimes one needs acceptance in order to move forward in life and strive to do one’s best. Life is short, and we should be spending it loving each other instead of fighting. Ultimately, 2 Down is about gratitude towards life”. -Axel

Apple Music to introduce animated album covers

Apple Music has announced that animated album covers will soon be available on its streaming platform.

Animated playlist covers were introduced in the iOS 14 update, but the new feature will allow for artists to upload unique animated covers for their albums.

Apple have now announced that the feature will be available for albums as of the forthcoming iOS 14.3 and macOS Big Sur 11.1 update, expected early next week for the public.

Albums with exclusive animated artwork include Pearl Jam’s Gigaton and Big Sean’s Detroit 2, which you can see demonstrated in the tweets below.

Last week, meanwhile, it was announced that the vast majority of musicians earn less than £200 a year from music streaming platforms, according to a new survey.

The figures come from a survey of members belonging to songwriters’ body The Ivors Academy and the Musicians’ Union, which found that 82 per cent of respondents earned less than £200 from streaming in 2019, including some with “millions” of streams.

The survey results come amid an ongoing government inquiry into the impact of “the business models” operated by the likes of Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Google Play.

Your EDM Premiere: Killbox Back in the Lab to Conjure up ‘Beaker’ [RAM]

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or completely ignoring D&B for the past few months, you’ll know that Killbox are back on the prowl, releasing a series of singles on RAM that are teeth-crunchers no matter what system you’re listening on. Combining that classic neurofunk/techstep rawness with modern clean production as they do, the newest single “Beaker” will drop on Monday, unless you read this article (which clearly you are).

All the tracks thus far have been teasers to Killbox’s upcoming album Devine Profits, which will obviously be a smasher in its own right, but the guys are purposely spacing out the singles because they want fans to really let each one sink in. With “Beaker,” they’ve brought out the fast snares in a big way plus lots more so it’s a good thing we’re getting a minute to adjust.

From pretty much the first phrase of “Beaker,” listeners will know they’re in for it with an eerie sine wave synth rattling in and out as the drums, crunchy mid-bass synth and grinding, metallic sounds start to stack up on each other. The drop is about as heavy as they come from any era and from there the weedwacker snares come in and that actually, interestingly, also comprise the main beat. The boys have built the kick into those cool, circular snares and subtle though it may be, it makes a big impact on the way the track moves.

Driving the track even further is that crunchy mass synth, a creepy ambient melody and something we haven’t seen in hard drum and bass for quite a while: the deep bass amen break. It used to be a stable for phrase transitions in the days of techstep and darkstep and it’s what it sounds like: an amen break tying two phrases together with a short, extremely heavy deep bass melody consisting of two or three layered chords.

That little break, though smalle, is one of those things that make acts like Killbox so important: they have this library of sounds that they can pull out at any time and apply to modern techniques to make a new level of production and merge the best of all eras. “Beaker” will remind old school heads of things they forgot they missed while continuing to push the boundaries of the new era of D&B. To that end, it’s almost a perfect track, and thanks to Killbox and RAM, there’s more coming.

“Beaker” will drop on RAM Monday, December 14. Keep an eye on the RAM website for links to stream and buy.

Sewerslvt swirls genres on ‘The World Is Fvcked’ LP – Dancing Astronaut

Australia’s Sewerslvt has made a name for themselves through their atmospheric drum and bass, littered with synthwave and breakbeat influences. Always one to break new ground, the largely anonymous producer is back with one of their most genre-bending records to date, The World Is Fvcked.

Recently named one of Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2021, Sewerslvt is already setting the tone for next year, closing out this year’s campaign on a high note. The World Is Fvcked draws influence from every corner of electronic music: acid, techno, hardstyle, lo-fi, trance, house, post-industrial as well as the producer’s fan-familiar atmospheric sound. Genres vary song to song, but the project remains cohesive and enthralling top-to-bottom.

On Twitter, Sewerslvt published a note expressing regret for their past actions and art. In addition to distancing themselves from their past projects, Sewerslvt will donate the sales from The World Is Fvcked to The Okra Project, a “collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black Trans people.” The World Is Fvcked is available for purchase on Bandcamp, or donate directly to The Okra Project here.

Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins and Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron form new band

Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters and Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden have formed a new band.

The two drummers have been working together under the moniker Nighttime Boogie Association since they both participated in a tribute concert to late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell in 2019.

The band have shared their first two tracks, the driving ‘Long in the Tooth’ and ‘The Path We’re On’. You can hear both below.

After initially jamming at Hawkins’ house after the Cornell benefit, the project was delayed due to the pair’s respective commitments to their main bands, and then by the coronavirus pandemic. During lockdown, they started working together again remotely.

“He sent me some fun little funky drum machine with some Foghat guitars and I just cut it up in the computer, as we do nowadays, and we just fashioned a song out of it,” Hawkins said of ‘Long in the Tooth,’ speaking to Rolling Stone.

“I sent it to Matt and he was like, ‘This is really cool.’ And I’m like, ‘You’re gonna put real drums on it, right?’ We’re two drummers in arguably two of the bigger rock bands on the planet right now, and we’re not gonna have real drums on it. That’s kinda rad.”

The duo added that they’re continuing to write demos, and hope to have more material within the next six to eight months.

“We’re doing this for fun,” Hawkins added. “Me and Matt aren’t planning on buying any mansions off of this.”

Earlier this week, meanwhile, Hawkins revealed his all-time favourite Foo Fighters songs.

Speaking to Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music, the drummer expressed his fondness for ‘Aurora’, which features on the first Foos record that Hawkins played on, ‘There Is Nothing Left To Lose’ (released in 1999).
