Johnny Marr says impact of Gillian Gilbert joining New Order “overlooked”

Johnny Marr has praised New Order‘s synth player Gillian Gilbert, and said the appointment of a female musician was a monumental if not “overlooked” part of the band’s history.

The former The Smiths guitarist, who last released a solo album in 2017, ‘Call The Comet‘, said that Gilbert was role model for young people – particularly girls – in the early ’80s when the Manchester band had formed from the ashes of Joy Division.

Speaking on New Order’s new Transmissions podcast, Marr said people may wonder why having Gilbert in the band was such a big deal, but he highlighted that “this was 30 odd years ago” when there were far fewer female musicians in world famous bands.

“She was very enigmatic,” Marr said of Gilbert. “I don’t really think that in all the years the New Order story’s been told that Gillian’s really been given the credit for what she did and what her joining that band meant to a lot of young people at the time, and obviously particularly girls.

“I try to avoid using the word iconic too much but back in 1981 when they were on the cover of a magazine, she was uber cool. Nowadays we are so used to a band with a girl playing keyboards – quite rightly. She was kinda the first to do that, as I remember it,” he said.

Last month, Kelly Lee Owens also called for more recognition for Gilbert. She hailed her as a role model and “synth queen”.

“Having Gillian as the synth queen was fucking amazing, speaking as a woman in music,” Owens told NME. “You can’t be what you can’t see, so to have a woman be a part of something like this and own her part was really inspiring.

Responding to Owens’ comments, Gilbert told NME: “It’s weird – you never think of your work as part of history or influencing people. It was weird when I joined because nobody expected a girl to be brought into the band. They expected another singer. It got better in the ‘90s, but going to Japan in the ‘80s for a photo shoot was a real shock because they didn’t want to talk to me. They’d say to the male members, ’Can you tell her to move?’ That was how they treated women in them days. I was just there in the background a lot of the time.”

In other news, New Order have shared never-seen-before footage of a performance of ‘Temptation’ at a gig in Lüneberg, Germany in 1984 – watch it here.

Slow Magic and RUNN leave fans ‘Breathless’ on second single from upcoming LP – Dancing Astronaut

Slow Magic returns with another awe-inspiring single from his forthcoming LP, it’s the end of the world but it’s ok., “Breathless,” via Moving Castle. Following his first pre-album single, “Carry On,” Slow Magic is back, unifying with RUNN for this latest lyrical expression.

Upon first listen, the track sounds typical of a well-produced, electro-pop product. While the track maintained its audacious and rhythmic tonality on the first go-around, it’s the second listen where the content and message are really able to sink in. “Breathless” pointedly addresses feelings associated with 2020 and rings in a more positive outlook. Slow Magic stated in a press release,

“Runn brought the idea of feeling down and not at your best but still having an optimistic and empowered outlook. I love the way the song turned out as an anthem for knowing you will be ok even when everything is not ok.”

RUNN’s vocals remind one to take a moment to catch their breath, along with the song’s powerful, dimensional synthwork, Slow Magic brings a resonant feeling of hope that may have been lacking this past year. Stream “Breathless” below.

Watch Alicia Keys cover a snippet of BTS’ ‘Life Goes On’

Alicia Keys shared a short cover of BTS‘ ‘Life Goes On’ on Twitter yesterday (November 26), sending fans from both camps into an internet frenzy.

“I bet y’all didn’t think I would play this one. Tell me if you know it,” Keys said, before launching into the acoustic performance.

BTS were quick to respond on Twitter, calling Keys’ cover “such a big honour“.

The cover arrived after BTS member V tweeted a short video of himself jamming out to Keys’ song, ‘Love Looks Better’, in a car last week – to which she replied, “Big love!!! Good morning[,] Ya’ll ready for ‘BE’?!?”

Recently, it was announced that BTS had become the first K-pop act to receive a Grammy nomination.

The boy band’s recent single ‘Dynamite’ is up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2021 awards, competing with the likes of Justin Bieber.

Guitar Center files for chapter 11 bankruptcy amid debt restructuring efforts – Dancing Astronaut

On Saturday, November 21, the nation’s largest retailer of music equipment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the midst of debt restructuring. The beloved Guitar Center, which has long been a second home for DJs and producers thanks to their hearty inventory of Pioneer DJ products and other electronic music hardware, was already challenged by online competitors prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, which only served to exacerbate the issue. Now, the company has reached a debt-reduction agreement with stakeholders.

The agreement will reduce Guitar Center’s staggering $1.3 billion debt to approximately $500 million. The company plans to secure an additional $335 million in senior secured notes. An additional $165 million will also be infused into Guitar Center via Carlyle Group managed fund Brigade Capital Management.

CEO Ron Japinga stated that Guitar Center is expected to rise out of bankruptcy before the end of 2020, and that no day-to-day sales and operations of the company will be affected during the process.

Watch Georgia and Yung Baby Tate fly through a 3D dreamscape in new ‘Feel It’ video

Georgia has returned with a animated video for her single ‘Feel It’ featuring Yung Baby Tate.

The clip, created by Haoyan of America and Afuttersak, features elaborate 3D captures of both artists, as they fly through a dreamscape on the wings of a plane branded with a fictional airline, named after the song.

At some points, the background blends with real life footage of cities, tunnels and skylines. At the end of the clip, the pair skydive into what appears to be a giant ear.

Watch it below:

‘Feel It’ is taken from Georgia’s second album, ‘Seeking Thrills’, released at the beginning of this year.

In a four-star review, NME said the record “leaves you with the overwhelming sense of a music buff whose work transcends its influences through its author’s evangelical self-belief and faith that the dancefloor can bring people together”.

In an interview, she also revealed she was working on new music, likely to come out next year.

“I feel quite excited actually about where I’m going to take the sound next,” Georgia told NME.

“I’m in a really great place right now where ‘Seeking Thrills’ was just such a joy to make. I really didn’t have to suffer. People say that you have to suffer to make great art. I didn’t really feel like I was suffering throughout – I was just on a mission to create something that I really wanted to create.”

This is KSHMR’s first album since his 2016 release, The Lion Across The Field. The announcement follows the Dharma Worldwide label head’s recently rolled out Dreamz side project with his debut and second single titled “Casual,” and “Anywhere You Wanna Go,” alongside KARRA which dropped earlier this year.

The album’s title or tracklist features have yet to be revealed as the brief trailer offers little sound to speculate what sonic direction the renowned producer has planned for the forthcoming LP. Munya Chawawa’s Unknown P shares debut single, ‘Piers Morgan’

Comedian Munya Chawawa has released his debut single as Unknown P, ‘Piers Morgan’.

Chawawa has enjoyed huge viral success over the past couple of years, having shared various sketches that reflect current events, politics and social issues.

Described as “the UK’s first ‘posh’ drill rapper”, the funnyman’s Unknown P alter-ego has now offered up his first track, on which the “pheasant-eating, Brexit-backing Tory” expresses his love for the divisive Good Morning Britain host.

Piers Morgan/ Susanna Reid, I’m adorin’,” Unknown P raps over a drill beat, before going on to reference Margaret Thatcher, caviar, Rupert Murdoch and Bourbon biscuits.

Released via Atlantic Records, ‘Piers Morgan’ was co-produced by Munya and Rymez (Headie One, M24). You can watch its official video below.

“I created Unknown P as a nod towards the appropriation and false ownership of black culture that often happens in western societies,” Chawawa explained.

“Drill is very much portrayed as violent music for violent people, as a means of stubbing out a form of expression for many black young men…when in reality, it’s a genre of music enjoyed by people of all demographics across the world.”

He continued: “Unknown P comes to burst the bubble of what the stereotypical drill artist and fan ‘should’ look like. He’s a pheasant-eating, Brexit-backing Tory who loves the genre as much as the next man and furthermore, he’s a decent drill artist in his own right.”

Munya Chawawa has previously parodied the likes of JME, Ne-Yo, Headie One, Skepta and Dave with his online videos. The comedian’s other characters include newsreader ‘Barty Crease’ and Jamie Oliver’s Caribbean cousin, ‘Johnny Oliver’.

Last month, Chawawa used Unknown P to parody the recent fallout between Stormzy and Chip.
