Derrick May Accused of Sexual Assault and Harassment by Multiple Women

According to a report by published by Ellie Flynn for DJ Mag, veteran techno music producer and DJ Derrick May has been accused of sexual harassment by four women.

The women, whose names were changed to protect their identities, detailed graphic accounts of sexual harassment and abuse by May that date back 20 years. The new allegations were precipitated by similar accusations levied against May by Michael James, a former Detroit-based colleague and collaborator.

The stories told by the women recount incidents of groping, indecent exposure, and forcible touching, among other allegations against May. One of the women, who told DJ Mag she was assaulted in a hotel bathroom, recalled her attack as “aggressive and premeditated” and said that May “waited until he got [her] alone and basically attacked.”

Arc North Debuts ‘Stronger’ ft. Shaunt.wav

Having stayed overly consistent this year, dropping a stunning, 5-track EP with No Cow On The Ice, as well as a handful of forward-thinking singles, Arc North is seemingly not letting anything stop him in his rise to the top. After the immense success of his Linkin Park cover “Numb,” alongside Aaron Richards, New Beat Order and Cour, the talented producer is back, teaming up with singer, songwriter and producer Shaunt.wav to share the inspirational single “Stronger.”

A joint release between Frequency and Lacuna, “Stronger” sees the Swedish-born producer explore soothing soundscapes and tender beats. Throughout this short-but-sweet single, smooth chords and percussion create the perfect space for Shaunt.wav’s charismatic vocal delivery to shine in the mix. His radio-friendly songwriting adds a lot of flavor to “Stronger,” while the drop explodes into an infectious sequence of vocal chops and heavenly pads, making this a certified electronic-pop hit.

“‘Stronger’ is about someone who is a pushover and keeps returning to a lover who continues to lead them on in love. After one too many times let down, they find the strength to not be controlled and realize that they have to pick up their pieces, move on, and become “stronger than they were before,” explains Shaunt.wav.

Katy Perry won’t give evidence in legal fight with Australian fashion designer

Katy Perry will not give evidence in a new trademark infringement lawsuit against her by Australian fashion designer Katie Jane Taylor, who trades under her maiden name Katie Perry.

Legal trouble between the pair began in 2009, when lawyers acting for the singer, real name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, opposed Taylor’s trademarking of the name Katie Perry to represent her own clothing name – despite it being her birth name.

In July of that year, Hudson’s legal team dropped their opposition to the trademark at a hearing at Intellectual Property Australia.

Last year, Taylor initiated legal proceedings against the singer for selling clothes in Australia that with a name that is “substantially identical with, or deceptively similar to” her trademark.

The products sold by the singer span a wide range of merchandise that the defence says is not within the scope of the case, but did specify certain items which they believe are: cat-ear headbands and a Katy Perry “Special Edition X-Large Pizza Box Kit” comprised of pizza-themed pyjamas, pizza slice necklaces and a pencil case.

The Australian Federal Court heard yesterday (November 12) that Hudson would not give evidence or appear in court – instead, her manager Steve Jensen, from talent agency DMG will appear on her behalf.

Hudson’s defence says they used the name Katy Perry in “good faith”, and made the counter-claim that Taylor’s trademark is liable to be cancelled because the singer had already accrued a reputation in Australia prior to the registration of the designer’s trademark.

The hearing for the case has been scheduled for November 2021.

Ticketmaster Will Check Your COVID Vaccine Status For Shows

With news earlier this week that Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech SE reportedly discovered a vaccine to fight COVID-19 that’s over 90% effective, promoters are feeling hopeful about the return of shows in 2021. But they’re not taking any chances either.

One of the biggest ticketing platforms in the country, Ticketmaster (and its parent company, Live Nation), is working on methods to confirm vaccination or negative test results before letting people into their shows. Here’s how it would work, according to Billboard:

After purchasing a ticket for a concert, fans would need to verify that they have already been vaccinated (which would provide approximately one year of COVID-19 protection) or test negative for coronavirus approximately 24 to 72 hours prior to the concert. The length of coverage a test would provide would be governed by regional health authorities — if attendees of a Friday night concert had to be tested 48 hours in advance, most could start the testing process the day before the event. If it was a 24-hour window, most people would likely be tested the same day of the event at a lab or a health clinic.

Once the test was complete, the fan would instruct the lab to deliver the results to their health pass company, like CLEAR or IBM. If the tests were negative, or the fan was vaccinated, the health pass company would verify the attendee’s COVID-19 status to Ticketmaster, which would then issue the fan the credentials needed to access the event. If a fan tested positive or didn’t take a test to verify their status, they would not be granted access to the event. There are still many details to work out, but the goal of the program is for fans to take care of vaccines and testing prior to the concert and not show up hoping to be tested onsite.

If everyone at a venue has confirmed tested negative or received a vaccination, the chance of transmission would, theoretically, be much, much lower and allow for even the possibility of maskless events. Though, ultimately, that will likely be up to local governments and venues.

German courts rule techno is officially considered music in landmark decision for clubs – Dancing Astronaut

German clubs will now be taxed at the same rate as traditional concert venues in a new ruling by Germany’s federal fiscal court BFH—a major win for the clubbing industry. The court agreed with plaintiffs, including Berlin’s legendary Berghain club, that they should not have to pay the standard 19 percent value-added tax on ticket sales when concert venues enjoy a lower rate of only seven percent.

The ruling took place on October 29, and the rationale behind the ruling was that “the average visitor” was at the venue primarily for the music and DJs, similarly to concerts. Regardless of the artist being a singer, an instrumentalist, or a DJ, the reason for purchasing the ticket remains the same, to enjoy a musical performance.

The presiding judge stated, “they perform their own new pieces of music using instruments in the broader sense, to create new sound sequences that have their own character.”

The ruling is a victory for the severely impacted club industry amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Germany has been internationally leading the way in improvising and finding ways to hold socially distanced raves, and now the clubs will be able to keep more of the profits on ticket sales thanks to this landmark ruling officially validating club music as exactly what it is—music.

CASPIAN POOL – INSIDER

I’m excited to be working with French synth-pop/electronic duo Caspian Pool again. Their ‘Insider’ EP is out today and features a brilliant accompanying video, sucking you deep into a time warp of glorious 90’s club sensibilities and primary colours. The song and video for the title track “Insider” honestly reminds me of Madonna in the early 2000’s with the vibe of the track and most importantly the lead vocal. Cool vibes on this one, tap in to the video below now and stream the EP here.

Billie Eilish on “feeling like a parody” and making an album in quarantine

Billie Eilish has spoken about her identity and the quarantined context in which her new album was made.

The star’s follow-up to her 2019 debut ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’, which currently doesn’t have a release date nor a publicised title, was created during in coronavirus lockdown. Eilish told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 that the situation birthed “a completely different” album to what was likely intended initially.

“That’s what we’ve been talking about for months about how this year has sucked for a lot of people, and as much as I wished that I had been able to have the year I was planning on having and tour and blah, blah, blah, we would never have made this album,” Eilish told Lowe, while promoting her brand new single ‘Therefore I Am‘ today (November 12).

She continued: “I mean, we would have made something, but it would have been completely different. It’s not like we’re making songs about quarantine, we’re just in a different mindset than we would be otherwise. And that’s just how everything is. It’s the butterfly effect. It’s like if you hadn’t done this three years ago, maybe you wouldn’t be doing this three years later. It’s just the way that it is. At the same time, this is the most time off I’ve ever had in my life, first of all. And especially since this all started like five years ago.

“So it’s been a blessing, huge blessing and a curse, but I’m really, really happy that we’ve been able to make the things that we’re making. And I can’t wait for you to hear this sh-t. I can’t wait to have the world hear. I’m very excited and hopeful for the future.”

Elsewhere in the interview Eilish addressed a recurring experience in which she’s felt “like a parody” of herself.

“For most of this year, like the first half of this year, I felt very trapped in my own facade weirdly. I was having a real problem of…because I kept feeling like a parody of myself, which was crazy and very weird and hard to manoeuvre  And I don’t really know how I got out of it, but it was very…I mean, it happens occasionally still, but there was a couple of months in there where I was like, everything I wore, I was like, ‘Oh, I look like Billie Eilish.’ Everything I said, everything I did. And then we would make music and I would be like, this feels…I kept feeling like…what’s the word? Inauthentic. Yeah, inauthentic version of myself, because I felt like I was being myself too much.

“I go home and I watch myself on TV and hear myself in the store and it’s like, it’s great. It’s just like, I got really in my head because I forgot…because it was always natural. And so suddenly when it was like a thing that everybody knew about, then I was like, now I feel like I’m trying to be…it was crazy. So yes, I definitely had to kind of get over that hurdle of feeling like a Billie Eilish parody.”
