David Guetta graces 2020 MTV EMAs with live rendition of ‘Let’s Love’ [Watch]

David Guetta left the 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards with one more honor than he came with: victor of the “Best Electronic” category. The action, however, wouldn’t end there for Guetta, who outpaced five other esteemed dance entities (Calvin Harris, Kygo, Marshmello, Martin Garrix, and The Chainsmokers), to take home the title.

The “future rave” co-leader could then be found stepping onto a stage in Budapest to guide a live rendition of his ninth collaboration with Sia, “Let’s Love,” from start to finish. A performance executed with pomp and circumstance or, more specifically, an eye-catching light show that’s been the talk of the electronic circuit in the time since, the spectacle saw RAYE serve as a worthy stand-in for Sia. The vocalist has become something of a serial collaborator for Guetta lately, lending her talents to “Make It To Heaven” and “Stay (Don’t Go Away).” View the sonic spectacle below.

Watch Shygirl introduce her animated aliases in vibrant ‘Slime’ video

Shygirl has shared a new video for her recently released single, ‘Slime’ – you can watch it below.

Taken from her forthcoming ‘Alias EP’, the project’s second single follows the September release of ‘Freak’, which saw the London rapper team up with producer Bodega, who is also the co-founder of Shygirl’s label NUXXE.

In the part-animated video for ‘Slime’, Shygirl introduces her four aliases: Baddie, Bae, Bovine and Bonk.

According to a press release, Baddie is “a sexually-liberated, nocturnal temptress who is quick with a side-eye”. Bae is a ” blonde with no ambition”, because she’s “already at the top”. Bovine is a “classy and aloof it-girl” who “follows her own brand of spiritualism”, while “playful nymph” Bonk is a “party-obsessed aquarian, as vivid and expressive as her out-there makeup”. Each of the aliases arrive with their own digital avatar, animated by Maurice Andresen.

Co-directed by Aidan Zamiri and Shygirl herself, you can watch the ‘Slime’ video below:

Shygirl’s ‘Alias EP’ is set for release on November 20. You can see the tracklist below:

1.’Twelve’
2.’Slime’
3.’Freak’
4.’Tasty’
5.’Leng’
6.’Bawdy’
7.’Siren’

Earlier this year, Shygirl and Arca teamed up for a new single called ‘Unconditional’, the proceeds of which were donated to social justice organisations.

The respective British and Venezuelan artists released their collaboration exclusively on Bandcamp on June 5 as part of the platform’s special “100% royalties for artists” day.

‘Unconditional’ is available as a free download with the option to make a donation. Proceeds from the single will go to Black Lives Matter and Inquest UK.

Shimza launches Kunye Records with ‘Calling Out Your Name’ EP [Q&A]

South Africa’s electronic scene has long held a reputation for producing some of the most vibrant and eclectic house music in the world. Now, the country’s Afro-tech scene has its newest record label thanks to veteran producer Shimza. The Guatang-born artist has launched Kunye Records, his newly minted imprint dedicated to promoting South Africa’s rich musical heritage.

Kunye Records’ first release comes from none other than the label’s founder. Shimza initiates the label with his Calling Out Your Name EP, featuring stark vocals from Mikhaela Faye on the title track as well as remix honors from Kostakis. Dancing Astronaut caught up with Shimza to chat about his new record label, his ambitions for Kunye, and the label’s first EP.

Congratulations on the beginning of Kunye Records! How are you feeling now that the imprint is finally launched and what are your long-term goals for the label?

Shimza: “I feel great because now we have a home where we are able to release music that we want the world hear and we will be known for it. My long-term goal is to build a trusted global label that will be a bridge between local artists and the world while fostering social cohesion.”

You’re marking the occasion with Kunye’s first EP, Calling Out Your Name. What was it about this EP that stood out to you as the choice to the imprint’s first release?

Shimza: “I wanted to release my EP as the first release to show the direction that Kunye Records will follow and how I want the label to be represented.”

The EP’s title track features dramatic vocals from Mikhaela Faye about humanity’s impact on the environment and the globe. Are there any lyrics from “Calling Out Your Name” that particularly resonate with you?

Shimza: “We are living in a time where certain actions by humanity have severe reactions and effects on the environment as a whole. For example, the effects of global warming are becoming more and more apparent each day. We also have hate crimes which, more often than not, are caused by ignorance and lack of understanding. This has a further effect on how the outside world sees us as a country or a continent. So, this particular song for me is one that outlines [the reality] that we need to do better and treat our planet with more respect.”

You recently performed at Robben Island on Nelson Mandela Day. Can you describe the significance of that performance and what it meant to you?

Shimza: “Performing at Robben Island was a very iconic moment for me; being the first South African to have a musical performance there. I was able to do what I love and entertain South Africans in the comfort of their own home during a pandemic while raising funds for impoverished  communities in the mother city.”

Can you hint at any artists that you’d like to work with on Kunye? Or can you give us a teaser for any projects in the works on imprint?

Shimza: “We already have three EPs lined up with great artists from South Africa. We believe that their sound resonates with what we want to put out as part of our debut.”

“It’s darker than anything we’ve ever done”

Dave Grohl has revealed how the dark and sobering video for Foo Fighters‘ ‘Shame Shame’ was inspired by an unsettling dream he experienced as a teenager.

The latest visual offering from the band sees them heading in their darkest direction to date, with Grohl embarking on a mysterious quest to discover a burning coffin at the top of a hill.

Directed by filmmaker Paola Kudacki, the video also stars Sofia Boutella as a mysterious temptress and culminates in the striking image of Grohl digging his own grave.

While the scorched-earth epic marks a new direction for the Foos, Grohl explained that it was influenced by a “dark corner” of his psyche that he has experienced for over 40 years.

“It’s crazy, the idea for that video came from a dream I had when I was when 14 or 15 that I’ve remembered my entire life,” Grohl told NME.

“I was standing at the bottom of this hill and there was this coffin on fire next to this dead tree and I ran up the hill to rescue whoever was in this coffin, but I couldn’t get my hands on it because it was on fire! I stood there filled with anxiety and fear, but I’ve remembered it my entire fucking life and never knew what it meant.”

Grohl went on to explain how it marked a “departure” from the band’s sound, ahead of releasing their tenth album ‘Medicine At Midnight’ next year.

“I thought this should be the first track people hear, so they realise this album isn’t like Foo Fighters records that have gone before,” he said.

“When we started considering the video, that dream I’ve lived with for 37 fucking years seemed to match with the aesthetic of the song. I called a friend of mine, Paola Kudacki, who’s a world-renowned photographer and then called Sofia Boutella, who’s just a force of nature.

“They fit perfectly together, the visuals – which are some dark corner of my psyche – and the song. It’s a bit darker than anything we’ve ever done.”

The video’s arrival comes after Grohl caught up with NME to discuss how their new record marks the band’s first “Saturday night party album”.

“It was written and sequenced in a way that you put on, and nine songs later you’ll just put it on again,” he said.

“Y’know, songs like ‘Making A Fire’. To me that’s rooted in Sly & The Family Stone grooves, but amplified in the way that the Foo Fighters do it.”

Foo Fighters release ‘Medicine At Midnight’ on February 5, 2021 via Roswell Records/Columbia Records.
