Watch Skrillex Join Ty Dolla $ign for Scintillating “Tiny Desk” Live Performance

Fresh off the release of his third studio album, the Grammy-worthy Featuring Ty Dolla Sign, Ty Dolla $ign teamed up with NPR Music for a remarkable live set as part of their venerated “Tiny Desk” concert series. In addition to his live band, the hip-hop and R&B superstar tapped Skrillex to help out with the performance, which is nothing short of breathtaking.

The group kicks off the concert with the “Temptations,” a standout Featuring Ty Dolla Sign cut with Kid Cudi that Skrillex produced alongside Hit-Boy. What follows is a raw and gorgeous cycle of stripped back performances of Dolla $ign tracks. Highlights include a funkfied version of his double-platinum 2013 single “Paranoid” and an aching interpretation of “Your Turn” in which he rocks out on the guitar. The band also performs a rollicking rendition of “Ego Death,” when Dolla $ign flexes his live sampling abilities as Skrillex jams out to the momentous track he featured on alongside Kanye West, FKA twigs, and serpentwithfeet.

Mako lengthens ‘Fable’ rollout with another superlative sophomore album single, ‘Again’ – Dancing Astronaut

Mako‘s production depth has everlastingly been held at the highest stature, and that has yet to change as Alex Seaver continues to build his sophomore full-length effort, Fable. Following “Coyote,” “Chameleon,” and the album’s most recent delivery, “Parable,” the bona fide one-man show that is Mako has now returned to attach the fourth Fable opus, “Again.”

Currently slated for comprehensive arrival this December, Mako’s Hourglass successor has plainly worn its exploratory emotion on its sleeve. With Seaver outfitting “Again” with his own genuine vocals per usual, there are simply no wrong turns as he threads it together with a serene indie-electronic halo to epitomize the ultimate fall weather accompaniment. Mako explained what he sought out to accomplish with “Again,” stating,

“This entire record has been about challenging myself.  Taking something familiar while reaching for something else that I haven’t heard before. With ‘Again’, I really hoped to take on that dense, awe-some, and melancholic effect of a full orchestra – and press it through the filter of a grooving electronic cutout.”

Watch Martin Garrix’s Amsterdam Rooftop Set and More, Now Available to Stream Online

Last weekend, Martin Garrix took to the sky with a livestreamed set broadcast at sunset from the roof of Amsterdam’s A’Dam Tower. But in case you missed it, the performance is now available for you to play back on your own time. 

Garrix’s stream was facilitated by “Freqways,” an online event series launched this year by MDL BEAST, a global entertainment brand. So far, the series has also hosted Nora En Pure, Malaa and Eagles & Butterflies, all playing from scenic locations across the world, including on the coastline of Croatia’s Brac Island and on a boat in Paris’ River Seine. Each artists’ sets are available on demand for a limited time via Freqways’ website, which you can find here.

Ever wonder why dubstep is produced in 140 bpm? Skream has the answer


Dubstep originated in the early- to mid-2000s, pioneered by artists like Hatcha, Loefah, Kode9, Skream, Benga, Coki, and labels like Big Apple and Tempa. Early on, it was pushed heavily by pirate radio stations like RinseFM, which has since become instrumental in the rise of the genre, as well as BBC Radio 1.

It began out of influences from 2-step and dub reggae, as well as jungle, broken beat, and grime. But why was dubstep made in 140 bpm (in halftime, of course)? According to Skream, the answer is surprisingly simple: it was just the original load up tempo on Fruity Loops 3, a popular DAW at the time.

As a popular DAW, it was also the program of choice for grime and 2step, which only further contributed to the influence that carried over into dubstep.

longstoryshort‘s silhouette sharpens in focus under the sonic spotlight as the New York native hops back into the bass house saddle for “Raw Uncut.” Deft and drilling, the hybrid—which would be the star pupil of a live longstoryshort set—breaks from the tempered, vocal-centric bass house trappings audible on its predecessor, the Constance-assisted “Lost Summer.”

Marking longstoryshort’s return of focus to an instrumental-privileging aesthetic, “Raw Uncut” is evidently an original engineered to be enjoyed within a crowd. But, even as current circumstances be what they may, the COVID-19 health crisis comprises none of “Raw Uncut’s” sheer power. The single makes a compelling case for electronic music’s ability to be commensurately enjoyed outside of a live format, not to mention longstoryshort’s capacity to execute bass house crossovers in a refreshing fashion.

As 2020 winds to a close, “Raw Uncut” joins the list of productions that qualify longstoryshort as one of the year’s more noteworthy rising acts to bookmark. Stream “Raw Uncut” below.

REZZ Returns With Haunting Midtempo Single “Orbit”

You know its officially spooky season once REZZ arrives on the scene. Back just in time to unleash her slew of unearthly sounds, REZZ has released a new track called “Orbit,” her first single in nearly six months.

Rezz’s latest offering paints vibrant images of unfamiliar environments far from the reaches of this planet. An ominous synth pad envelops the resonate taps of a hollowed out drum as though the arrangement were twisting into a dark void. Distinct one-off basses interject before passing through as quickly as they arrived. A lonely melody plays out deliberately note by note before fading into darkness.

ADE taps Martin Garrix, David Guetta, and Timbaland for, ‘The Evolution Of Our Sounds’ [Watch]

Despite Amsterdam Dance Event going fully virtual this year, organizers of the event managed to bring forth a trifecta of distinguished guests including Martin Garrix, David Guetta, and Timbaland for a discussion of topics—from business to musical inspirations, and more.

Closing out ADE Pro 2020, the free-to-air virtual panel saw moderator Danny Howard delve into Guetta and Timbaland’s musical inspirations growing up and how artists such as Kraftwerk aspired them to reach commercial pop success. Further into the panel, both Guetta and Timbaland jokingly admitted to trying to replicate the others productions as well as discussing their transition from analog to digital.

With other discussions tailored towards artists and producers, the featured trio expound their mental fortitudes when making pop-hits, current influences, cultural impacts, and upcoming future projects—chatting about Garrix’s label imprint STMPD and forthcoming Area 21 album, Guetta’s “future rave” sound, and Timbaland’s Beatclub platform.
