Musician Union Launches Campaign to Demand Cent-Per-Stream Payouts by Spotify

A faction of US musicians has launched a vigorous campaign called “Justice at Spotify,” calling for the streaming giant to remit penny-per-stream payouts to artists, among other demands. The United Musicians and Allied Workers Union (UMAW) is crusading for major changes to Spotify’s business model, which they contend is responsible for artists being “underpaid, misled, and otherwise exploited” by the company, according to the organization’s website.

“As Spotify’s valuation soars, we have seen no increase in our streaming payments,” the site reads. “The company’s closed-door contracts and payola schemes ensure that only musicians already on top with extensive resources can succeed on the platform. As COVID 19 economically devastates music workers everywhere, it’s even clearer that Spotify’s existing model is counter to the needs of the vast majority of artists.”

The Chainsmokers Talk Hitting “Reset Button” On Music & Social Media

The Chainsmokers have emerged from the studio for a rare interview during lockdown, giving their supporters an update on what they’ve been doing and where they’re going from here.

Throughout quarantine, the duo consisting of Drew Taggart and Alex Pall have been working on investments by day (more here) and music by night. It’s a stark change-up from the 180 plus shows they played last year and 50 more Las Vegas residency gigs.

Their decision to hit the “reset button” on music and social media (see here) is not only what’s best for them at this time, they feel it’s best for the fans, too. When they come back, the music and content will be entirely fresh and exciting.

The Chainsmokers reveal:

We were going to take this year, even pre-COVID, to just work on music and regroup. So, it’s pretty crazy what happened in the world at this time, after kind of making that decision for ourselves. But we spent our time doing just that.

Will Briger‘s 1 Hour Intern podcast with The Chainsmokers covers a lot of ground — from lockdown to dealing with criticism to inspirations to embarrassing moments, side hustles, like their new film score and much more. They venture back into their teenage years, pursuing music and some important lessons they’ve learned on their way to stardom.

SG Lewis formally announces debut LP with disco-tinted single, ‘Feed The Fire’

The opening lyrics of SG Lewis‘ latest, “I think we’re onto something I want some more,” are an apt description of the reaction that “Feed The Fire” is sure to induce.

The disco-tinted single from Lewis’ forthcoming debut album has already earned him accolades; Annie Mac declared it the “hottest record in the world” on BBC Radio 1, positioning “Feed The Fire” as a hat trick success that is already making a name for itself, following in the footsteps of the Robyn and Channel Tres-featuring “Impact” and Lewis’ solo smash, “Chemicals.” Dressed in Lucky Daye’s vocals and the modern glory of disco sound reworked to fit contemporary times, “Feed The Fire” warmly bursts onto the electronic scene, bringing with it the news of Lewis’ debut album, slated to release on February 19, 2021.

Lewis said the benchmark project, titled times,

“…is an ode to the present moment. 2020 has shown us that the experiences we took for granted in the past are never promised tomorrow, and that the opportunity to dance together may not always be there again. After reading about 70’s New York and the birth of disco, I became infatuated with the euphoria and escapism that the music from that period created, and the safe spaces the clubs at the time provided for people to express themselves. I aimed to create a world musically that captured those same feelings, and to imagine the music that would be playing in those rooms if they were to exist today.”

times will largely delve into disco, taking on the music of another era with Lewis’ own signature twist, as “Feed The Fire” signals. Although times will openly embrace the disco sound and its distinctive feel, Lewis exclusively told Dancing Astronaut, the LP is hardly his first stop in the disco domain. Lewis notably invoked disco on Dusk, the series opener to his concept triptych, Dusk, Dark, Dawn, released in early 2018.

Listeners who find their disco fever spiking with “Feed The Fire” can indulge in Lewis’ disco house set from The Lab LDN here as the countdown to times kicks off.

Live Nation to Face Lawsuit Over Teen’s Fatal 2015 Drug Overdose at HARD Summer

Live Nation Entertainment is facing a renewed lawsuit filed by the family of Katie Dix, a young woman who died following a fatal drug overdose at the 2015 edition of HARD Summer. In a new ruling, Superior Court of Los Angeles County Judge Dan Thomas Oki said a company like Live Nation that plans and operates large music festivals “owes a duty of reasonable care to festival attendees.”

According to a report by Pitchfork, who reviewed the case’s legal documents, Oki ruled that Live Nation must now face the suit, which was initially filed back in 2016. The family of Dix, who was 19 years of age at the time of her death, is suing on the grounds that Live Nation demonstrated negligence and breached their duties to protect her from the distribution and ingestion of illegal drugs.
