Giles Martin wanted to “rip off his dad” George for The Beatles’ ‘Now And Then’

Giles Martin has shared that he wanted to “rip off his dad”, the late George Martin, for The Beatles‘ ‘Now And Then‘.

Martin was approached by surviving Beatles member, Sir Paul McCartney, with a demo for what would be deemed as the “final” Beatles song ‘Now And Then’. The track stems from a demo tape recorded by late bandmate John Lennon and was completed with the help of AI – which lifted the songwriter’s vocals off the initial recording and allowed the surviving members to work with them.

Speaking about the process of working on ‘Now And Then’ in an interview with The Sun, Martin said: “Paul played me what he’d started working on from the ’94 demo plus the extras he’d already done — new bass, piano, the guitar solo. Then we discussed whether to do more things with it.”

They went on to create a Beatles-style string arrangement, the kind that Martin’s late father – who was known as the fifth Beatle due to his work producing their music – was famous for.

“We started off with a 22-piece string section,” said Martin, “But eventually I cut it down to eight for most of the song — a double string quartet of four violins, two violas and two cellos.

He continued: “I was thinking, ‘What would dad have done?’ And I know he would have said, ‘You have to serve the song.’ So yeah, if I wanted to rip off my dad, do it for ‘Now And Then’ by The Beatles.”

The track also featured “oohs” and “aahs” sampled from Beatles hits ‘Eleanor Rigby’, ‘Because’, and ‘Here, There And Everywhere’, with Martin revealing that he had to persuade Macca to have them added to the song.

“Paul was reticent about that, understandably so, because he didn’t want some gimmicky thing. But I just thought, ‘The Beatles would do oohs here and I can’t get The Beatles to do them because two of the oohs are no longer with us’,” He said.

He continued: “So I said to Paul, ‘Let me just try it because I think it will sound right.’ He liked the idea in the end — it works for the song.”

Martin went on to add: “’Now And Then’ does sound like a Beatles song but not one from back in the day. It’s more how a Beatles song would sound now because they’re older. We didn’t try to hide that.”

In other news, The Beatles have topped the charts with ‘Now And Then’ – six decades after they secured their first Number One.

This feat means that McCartney and co. now boast the longest period between an artist’s first and last Number One single – with their first being ‘From Me to You’ in May 1963 (60 years and six months ago). Previously, Elvis Presley held the record with 47 years and six months between his 1957 hit ‘All Shook Up’ and a reissue of ‘It’s Now or Never’ that was released in 2005.

‘Now And Then’ reaching peak position on the charts also marks the longest gap ever between Number One singles. This comes as the rock veterans last reached Number One 54 years ago with ‘The Ballad of John and Yoko’ (1969.) Prior to the “final” track Kate Bush held the record for 44 years between ‘Wuthering Heights’ (1978) and’ Running Up That Hill’ (2022).

Earlier this week it was reported that Ringo Starr initially had doubts that the band’s success would last.

“None of us thought it would last a week,” he said. “Paul was going to write, I was going to open a hairdresser’s, George would get a garage. But it went on and then it ended. And at the right time, I think. But, you know, that didn’t stop us playing with each other.”

Elsewhere, the surviving members have continued the run of new material this month – releasing new expanded editions of ‘1962-1966 (The Red Album)’ and ‘1967-1970 (The Blue Album)’, mixed in stereo and Dolby, today (November 10).

Drill rapper Official TS admits terrorism chemical offence

Drill rapper Official TS has pleaded guilty to possessing chemicals for terrorist purposes.

The 20-year-old musician – real name Al-Arfat Hassan – is known by drill fans as the artist Official TS, and was caught by police when he was stopped at Heathrow Airport.

Originally from Enfield in North London, the rapper originally sang about street violence, however, was reported by BBC News as taking a turn in 2021 and moving on to religiously-inspired violence.

At the airport on February 27, officers seized two iPhones when Hassan was about to fly to Bangladesh with his father and uncle. From there, the musician reportedly missed his flight and went home “to quickly dispose of the chemicals and most of the weapons”.

But detectives working with the specialist Counter-Terrorism Policing National Digital Exploitation Service (NDES), proceeded to find a “wealth of incriminating material” on the phones.

This included an IS video demonstrating, on a real prisoner, how to kill with a knife, as well as footage on how to make a bomb from easily obtainable chemicals and a bulb. Hassan was found in possession of the chemicals mentioned in the footage.

Information about the footage found was heard at a trial last year at Leeds Crown Court, and detectives shared that they also found an image of the drill artist posing with knives and a samurai sword, as well as an unreleased track that listed Western victims of IS beheadings and ending with the line “Central London explosion”.

The outlet also reports one teenage fan of Hassan’s music who exchanged thousands of messages and calls over several months and allegedly “bonded over their extremist beliefs” according to Cdr Richard Smith, former head of Counter Terrorism Command (via BBC).

The jury was told that in their messages they used code words like “cupcakes” to refer to explosives, and “marketplace” to discuss the attack itself. The 15-year-old posed for images of himself with a hunting knife in front of an IS flag, and messaged family members: “I just want martyrdom as soon as possible.”

Hassan also took photos of himself with a machete, a knife and the chemicals he had bought., and was reported as saying: “I need to go out looking nice, though – final moments and that.”

The first trial saw the jury unable to decide whether the drill rapper was guilty of preparing a terrorist act, and a second trial in Sheffield collapsed following suggestions that the jurors were falling asleep. Hassan has since pleaded guilty to possessing chemicals for terrorist purposes at the Old Bailey and is set to be sentenced on February 2.

In interviews given to police and at the trials, Hassan said he was a “digital content creator” and that the weapons and chemicals found were merely props for his music videos. The 15-year-old told police that he simply “got taken in by the hype” and “would never intentionally harm anyone”.

Speaking with the outlet, Cdr Richard Smith said that the arrests were made as the police were under “enormous pressure” to ensure that “they didn’t act too late”.

The news of Official TS pleading guilty to the lesser charge of possessing chemicals for terrorist purposes comes following reports that Met Police requests to remove UK drill content from TikTok increased 366 per cent since 2020.

The crackdown on UK drill was also seen earlier this summer when it was confirmed that music videos from UK drill artists could be used as evidence in court.

Lost Frequencies crafts his third artist album ‘All Stand Together’ – Dancing Astronaut

“All Stand Together,” the eagerly anticipated third album from Lost Frequencies, cements Felix De Laet’s place in the electronic music pantheon. Following the success of 2016’s “Less Is More” and 2019’s “Alive And Feeling Fine”, the new LP arrives with a lot of expectations. And it delivers. Over the course of 11 tightly crafted tracks, De Laet taps collaborators old and new to Lost Frequencies to craft a journey of feel-good electronica and dance-pop joviality.

The album kicks off with “No Limit” featuring Zak Abel, setting a tone and signaling that Lost Frequencies is not just revisiting his past glories but advancing his artist form. The title track, “All Stand Together,” lands as an anthem of unity and resilience, a theme that resonates throughout the album.

“Dive” with Tom Gregory stands out as a highlight. A track that encapsulates the beauty of collaboration — a dreamy, yet potent melding of two talents. Gregory’s vocals blend seamlessly with the Lost Frequencies’ sound. Tom Gregory himself described the collaboration as a natural and destined partnership.

The album’s emotional range deepens on tracks like “Back To You” with Elley Duhé & X Ambassadors, and “The Feeling.” Two deeply emotional singles, while “Leave You In The Past” with Netsky, and “Just Wanna Know” with Declan J Donovan, continue this introspective exploration on with two of the album’s more dance-able cuts. “Where Are You Now” with Calum Scott and “Questions” with James Arthur are prime examples of Lost Frequencies’ ability to weave emotive storytelling into his music. The album closes with “Fall At Your Feet,” a poignant ending and a fitting conclusion to an album that’s both a celebration of musical growth and proof of the power of collaboration.

For fans familiar with his previous works, this album is a delightful progression, and for newcomers, a compelling introduction to the world of Lost Frequencies.

Boygenius’ Phoebe Bridgers hits out at those “screaming about their bodies” online

Phoebe Bridgers of Boygenius has hit out at online trolls who make comments about her body online, and use social media to “actively embarrass themselves.”

The singer, songwriter and guitarist spoke out about the slew of nasty comments she and her bandmates receive online in a new interview with GQ, and stated that she finds it “fucking embarrassing” how people actually take to social media to make comments about their appearance.

The topic arose when the band were asked about their set at Belgium’s Pukkelpop festival in August, when Bridgers ripped her shirt open and revealed her bare chest.

Bandmate Lucy Dacus then followed suit, and the two spun around on stage together before falling to the floor. After it happened, discussion of the moment spread across social media, with some users criticising the musicians for what they saw as public indecency.

“Twitter’s dead and everyone who’s actively using Twitter is, I think, fucking embarrassing themselves,” said Bridgers, reflecting on the comments. “It’s owned by the richest man in the world; it’s called ‘X’ now; it’s not freedom of information. It is… ridiculous, in my opinion.”

She continued: “It just makes me sad for people to be screaming about our bodies, because it doesn’t fucking matter to us, but to someone at [our] show, it matters. Like, I’m laughing at some internet comments or whatever and it’s like, ‘Wait, this is destroying someone who it really matters to.’”

Dacus chimed in, saying that the moment on stage was “euphoric” and “felt great physically”.

“Personally, having [had] my body be a plaything at past points in my life for people, and getting mistreated and assaulted… Having a good time doing something like that is amazing,” she explained. “But I don’t need that to be the reason why it’s cool. It should be cool outside of [my personal] history. But also, personally for me, that fucking rocked. So everyone can eat a dick.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the band also reflected on how they want to unite fans who come from a minority, and continuously use their platform to highlight social and political issues they see.

“That is what makes [the job] meaningful to me,” said Julien Baker. “To be away from my family when they need me to be there, to be doing things that I find inane or self-serving. I’m like, ‘Dang, look at all those kids’. Like, actually, there’s 25,000 little gay kids out there who’ve heard us talk about things like: be inside of your life. Pay attention to your friends. It’s worth it to live.”

In other Boygenius news, earlier this week it was revealed that the group were among the artists leading BBC Radio 6 Music’s inaugural Artists Of The Year.

Similarly, their new EP ‘The Rest’ was shared last month, and went on to receive a four-star review from NME. In the review, Thomas Smith described the four-track release as both “compelling” and showcasing some of the “most expansive tracks in their catalogue” so far.

KISS set to livestream final concert of 2023 Farewell tour

KISS have invited fans across the globe to join them for the final night of their farewell tour by sharing details of a livestream.

It comes as the glam rock veterans are currently on the final leg of their extensive farewell tour, and set to play what is marked as their final-ever live show in New York next month.

Taking place at the iconic Madison Square Garden on December 2, Gene Simmons and co. have now announced that they will be holding a livestream of the closing date – meaning that fans across the world will have the chance to watch them live at the event.

The broadcast will be on a pay-per-view basis and is set to stream exclusively on PPV. The livestream will begin at 8pm ET, meaning that fans can watch the show in real-time. No further details about the show have been shared, although the band said that it “promises to be a massive event”.

To stream the show live on December 2, fans in the US and Canada can pay a one-time fee of $39.99 (£32.74), rather than signing up for a subscription. Internationally, it costs $14.99 (£12.27) to watch the event.

“50 years of Rock ‘n’ Roll. 1 Final Show,” the band wrote on Instagram, announcing the livestream event with a teaser trailer– which showed clips of their elaborate live performances. “Rock out with @kissonline one last time! Their final concert ever, LIVE”.

First announced back in 2019, then put on due to the pandemic, the ‘End Of The Road’ shows are the latest of the impressive number of farewell tours the band have embarked on over the years. The first of which took place 23 years ago.

When announcing that the run of shows would draw to a close in New York, the band confirmed it was fitting for them as that is where they first launched their career 50 years ago.

“KISS was born in New York City. On 23rd Street. Half a century ago,” they wrote at the time. “It will be a privilege and an honour to finish touring at Madison Square Garden, 10 blocks and 50 years from where we first started.”

In other KISS news, frontman Paul Stanley responded to rumours that KISS may be the next band to have a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

“I can’t speak to it in any other way except to be honest with you about how I feel now, and the way I feel today is … I can’t really see that happening,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned, we’re done.”

It was also revealed that the glam icons are being sued by the widow of their long-term guitar technician Francis ‘Fran’ Stueber, who passed away after contracting COVID while the band were on tour in 2021.

MAIKE DEPAS Drops Propulsive Techno Track "Midnight Ride" Ahead of New EP

MAIKE DEPAS, an emerging talent within the techno realm, has unveiled his latest single, the propulsive “Midnight Ride.”

“Midnight Ride” beautifully harkens back to the evolution of hard techno, drawing inspiration from the mid-1990s. Throughout the pounding track, the Italian beatsmith expertly blends lush synths with intricate rhythmic components and gritty bass, setting the stage for his upcoming Euphoria EP.

That project, which is slated for release on November 24th, comprises five distinct tracks, each serving as a testament to DEPAS’ unique artistry and versatility.

Out now via The Innovation Studio, “Midnight Ride” is accompanied by a visually captivating 3D video created by the celebrated artist Leonardo Silva, known as itwasleo.

“Midnight Ride” takes us on an exhilarating journey, as DEPAS tried to “give this sensation of driving through a storm on an autobahn 250 km/h.” He was able to produce the song by staying true to a distinct less-is-more approach, incorporating his field recordings and vintage sounds from his own analog gear collection, which includes a Roland Jupiter-X and an Octatrack sampler.

Take a listen to “Midnight Ride” below.

From an eight-year-old inspired by Skrillex and Martin Garrix to a skilled composer and pianist, DEPAS’ story is one of evolution. By the age of 11, he was already performing at small clubs in his hometown of Milan and developing a profound love for music, which led him to study at the prestigious Milan Conservatory.

Last year, DEPAS also attended Catalyst’s four-week Advanced Sound Design course in Berlin’s Funkhaus, a “life-changing” experience that left an indelible mark on his creative output. You can stay up-to-date on his music via the links below.

Nicki Minaj opens up about past addiction to Percocet

Nicki Minaj has opened up about a dark time in her life, when she used to be addicted to Percocet.

  • READ MORE: Nicki Minaj: every album ranked and rated

Speaking to Vogue for a cover feature, the rapper recalled being addicted to the prescription drug. While the rapper did not disclose when she was addicted to Percocet, she revealed that she was initially prescribed the drug to help with menstrual cramps and pain.

However, she found herself taking Percocet even when she wasn’t in pain and soon realised that she was addicted to it. “No one told me that this was a narcotic and this was addictive. Luckily I was able to ground myself. But — once an addict, always an addict. I feel like if you’ve ever experienced addiction to anything, which I have, you always have to think twice and three times about the choices that you make,” Minaj told Vogue.

Minaj then explained that she thinks the chances of getting addicted to substances are higher when you’re constantly being watched – a downside of fame. She related this other famous musicians who’ve faced problems with addiction, like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.

Nicki Minaj continued: “Look at some of our biggest celebrities. They eventually either get laughed out of wanting to go outside anymore, like Michael Jackson, or criticized, like Whitney Houston, or they fight silent battles, like Prince. These are some of the greatest of all time. And one day they decided, ‘You know what? I’d rather self-medicate and be in my own world.’ ”

Elsewhere in the interview, Minaj spoke of her father’s former addiction to cocaine, saying she did not understand that his substance abuse wasn’t a choice: “I think about watching my father go back and forth, and I just wish that at the time I understood that he wasn’t doing it because he wanted to.”

“I thought that he was making a conscious effort to be addicted to a drug that would have him steal his children’s video games and sell them for money. Think about that — who would make a conscious effort to do that? Now I realize, those people weren’t making those choices because they wanted to hurt their family. Addiction took over their bodies and their lives. They were victims too.”

Nicki Minaj is due to release her next album, ‘Pink Friday 2’, on December 8 to coincide with her birthday. The record was initially due for release on November 17, but was pushed back to avoid a clash with her friend and mentor Lil Wayne’s new album with 2 Chainz.
