sumthin sumthin Soars Into His Most Personal Song Yet, "When I'm Gone": Listen

sumthin sumthin is blasting onto bitbird with “When I’m Gone,” a song that’s equal parts raw energy and emotion.

His latest is a sonic journey that traverses the choppy waters of emotional liberation. Stylistically, it’s particularly significant as it marks the first time the producer has lent his own vocals to a release. Breaking away from the shackles of a toxic, codependent relationship, the lyrics, “You’ll need somebody to please when I’m gone,” resonate like a mantra for newfound independence.

Like his vocal contribution, the song sees sumthin sumthin jumping outside the confines of his comfort zone from the production end. The rushing waves of soaring synths wash over with catharsis in a way fans of the longtime trap producer may not have heard in awhile, leading to a satisfyingly frenetic blend of pop sensibility and melodic bass music.

“When I’m Gone” lands on San Holo’s bitbird following two high-profile releases on Noisia’s VISION and Alison Wonderland’s FMU Records imprint, respectively. Take a listen below.

Watch BTS’ Jungkook perform ‘Standing Next To You’ on ‘Fallon’

BTS’ Jungkook has performed a rendition of his new solo track ‘Standing Next To You’ on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. Check out footage of the moment below.

The appearance on the US chat show marked the television debut of the song, and saw the K-pop star take to the stage with some pretty impressive choreography.

For the first part of the track, Jungkook sang the opening verse alone on the dark stage, illuminated by a warm yellow light, before he was joined on stage by an array of backing dancers.

The performance also arrived three days after the BTS member shared his long-awaited solo record, ‘Golden’. Released on Friday (November 3), the record was preceded by two singles: ‘Seven’ featuring Latto and ‘3D’ with Jack Harlow.

Notably, the former debuted at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since become the fastest song to cross 1billion streams on Spotify. Check out the performance on The Tonight Show in full below.

Prior to taking to the stage on the chat show, Jungkook sat down to talk with Fallon about the new solo release, and revealed that he still has a fear of microwaves.

“I was looking through some interviews with you, and this question made me laugh,” Fallon began. “It said, ‘What is the scariest thing in the world for you?’ And your answer was: ‘A microwave. I always worry that it will explode.’ What are you talking about?”

“Well, when I was young, I used to be afraid,” Jungkook responded in English, before revealing that the phobia is ongoing and mimicking the sound of an explosion.

When asked if fans across the globe can expect a full-blown tour from the singer anytime soon, the artist responded: “ I want to complement them more and make more songs [first], and maybe when I’m ready I can do the tour in full swing.”

He also made a nod towards his upcoming live show at the Jangchung Arena in Seoul, which is set to take place on November 20 and will be available to watch internationally via a livestream.

In other Jungkook news, last week his new album ‘Golden’ received a four-star review from NME, with Rhian Daly describing the LP as one that “proves he’s more than up to the task” of holding up the K-pop scene.

“While Jungkook’s creative contributions to his debut solo album are limited – he has no writing or production credits, but is described as having “curated” these songs to “reflect his artistry” – he embodies each song’s emotions and style with ease; a musical chameleon becoming each new sound,” it read.

“For the most part, ‘Golden’ works and achieves exactly what its mission seemingly is – capture Jungkook’s multifaceted artistry, charismatic vocals and irresistible pop appeal in 10 easily palatable songs primed for commercial success.”

Blinders gives ‘Howling’ a techno counterpart – Dancing Astronaut

Back in May, Blinders renewed his Ultra ID-turned-STMPD RCRDS single “Prayer” by giving it a complete techno makeover just a few weeks after the original’s arrival. And now, he’s giving “Howling” the same treatment, returning to Martin Garrix’s label for its second part.

Those in attendance towards the end of the first night of Martin Garrix presents IDEM at RAI Amsterdam towards the end of October were treated with a preview of “Howling (Pt. II).” Blinders does just as he did with the “Prayer” counterpart, expanding the techno midsection of “Howling” into a fully fledged, driving cut that gave the RAI crowd a needed second wind when it was deployed.

Fightstar “open to making new music” ahead of reunion show

Fightstar have teased that new music could be on the horizon following the announcement of their upcoming live reunion.

The London post-hardcore group, who are fronted by Busted’s Charlie Simpson, are due to play their first show in nine years at the OVO Arena Wembley in London on March 22, 2024.

  • READ MORE: Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?! – Charlie Simpson

It’ll serve as “a very special celebration” of their 20th anniversary, with Twin Atlantic and Loathe set to appear as special guest support acts.

During a new interview with Kerrang!, Fightstar opened up about how it feels to be returning after a lengthy hiatus, and were asked if they’d considered making any new material.

“I feel like at the moment, we’re not really focused on that,” Simpson responded. “We’re definitely always open to making new music because we love making music together. That takes a huge amount of dedicated time.

“Dan [Haigh, bass] and Al[ex Westaway, guitar] have [their other band] Gunship stuff and I’ve been doing a lot of stuff and I’ve got a lot going on as well. I feel like when the time is right for us to come together and do new music, I definitely think we will want to.”

Haigh explained: “I will say this: when I’m in the studio and I’m writing Gunship material, every now and then I come up with a riff that’s just a little too heavy…”

Simpson went on to say that Fightstar “just want to focus on” preparing for the London concert currently, and “celebrate what’s part of the history of the band rather than focusing on the future”.

However, the frontman teased that the prospect of new music would “always be in the back of our minds, though”.

Fightstar have released four studio albums together since forming back in 2003, the latest being 2015’s ‘Behind The Devil’s Back’. Simpson has since reunited with Busted for two new records – ‘Night Driver’ (2016) and ‘Half Way There’ (2019) – and live tours.

Tickets for Fightstar’s London show go on general sale at 9am GMT this Friday (November 10) – you’ll be able to buy yours here. You can also sign up for a pre-sale that is due to go live at the same time tomorrow (November 8).

In a previous statement, Simpson said: “To be sat here today about to play our biggest-ever headline show at London’s legendary Wembley Arena is something that is hard for us to comprehend.

“We are so thankful to all our fans who have been so loyal to us and we can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with them. This will be a very special night for all of us.”

Flux Pavilion and PAV4N Collide on Rumbling Bass Anthem, "Heavy Metal"

Two years ago, Flux Pavilion seemingly left his time as a dubstep artist behind him. However, his influence is seemingly back in full force as he’s partnered with PAV4N of Foreign Beggars fame for their new single “Heavy Metal,” out now via Circus Records.

“Heavy Metal” is as dancefloor-ready as bass music comes. Flux Pavilion has tapped deep into his dubstep roots, infusing PAV4N’s wildly distinct flow into two rumbling drops. Both flex Flux’s versatility as well as general talents as a hitmaker, the first taking a minimalistic approach while the second changes the pace of the track entirely. Overall, “Heavy Metal” solidifies the reunion between Flux Pavilion and the heavier side of his project, giving longtime fans something to anticipate over the coming months.

While this is only the second single from Flux Pavilion’s forthcoming Fluxiverse EP following “Where You At” (with Conrank), the direction for the project is clearly set in stone. The fabled U.K. producer is tapping into what made him a household name over a decade ago, making this his most club- and festival-oriented piece of work in years.

You can listen to “Heavy Metal” below and find it on streaming platforms here.

Lucy Rose announces one-off London show for 2024

Lucy Rose has shared details of a one-off performance, set to take place in London next spring. Find ticket details below.

The upcoming live show follows on the heels of her recently released new single, ‘Could You Help Me’, and is set to arrive shortly after the singer performs at her previously announced intimate show at Ronnie Scott’s.

Set to take place on April 25, the headline stop will take place at The Roundhouse venue, and will be held as part of the venue’s annual ‘In The Round Festival”. It is also set to be her only live date alongside the sold-out Ronnie Scott’s gig in January – her first show in the city since December 2019.

Tickets for the new show will be available for purchase this Thursday (November 9) and go live at 10am. You can buy yours here.

To celebrate the announcement of the new live show, Lucy Rose has also shared a brand new music video for her latest single ‘Could You Help Me’.

Released last month, the track marked a new side to the English singer-songwriter, and saw her stray away from the intimacy and vulnerability of her fourth album ‘No Words Left’, which she shared back in 2019.

Directed by Dylan Friese-Greene, the music video for the new track sees Rose performing the upbeat, jazz-inspired song on her piano, alongside some hypnotic swirling visuals.

“After having my son Otis, I started to suffer from severe back pain that made living my day-to-day life almost impossible,” she explained last month, recalling what inspired her to write the song. “I sought medical help but was dismissed repeatedly. I put those emotions and exasperation into ‘Could You Help Me’. Although my back prevented me from being able to pick up a guitar, I was able to sit at the piano and play for a few minutes at a time. With Otis patiently listening, I think the music really helped lift me.”

“I’d been listening to a lot of different music; Errol Garner, Duke Ellington, Kiefer, Debussy, Little Simz,” she added. “And finding myself drawn so much more to writing at a piano.”

‘Could You Help Me’ is set to become part of a broader body of work for Lucy Rose, although specific details on the project are set to be revealed at a later date. Check out the music video above.

In a three-star review of her 2019 LP ‘No Words Left’, NME shared: “Lyrically, this is the best Rose has ever been. Poignant, affecting and candid, at times it’s spectacular. Yet the music fails to reach the same heights, resulting in a mismatched record. Sometimes excellent, sometimes uninvitingly dreary, ‘No Words Left’ is an ordinary album from a musician who could be truly extraordinary.

Elsewhere, Rose previously released two standalone songs — ‘Question It All’ and ‘White Car’ – which were recorded at the end of 2019.

Watch Coldplay’s acoustic cover of ‘The Astronaut’ by BTS’ Jin

Coldplay recently performed a cover of ‘The Astronaut’ by Jin of K-pop boyband BTS during their Tokyo concert on November 6.

The new acoustic cover is the first time Coldplay have performed the song without Jin on their ongoing ‘Music of the Spheres’ world tour, which kicked off in March.

“We’re going to play a song that we gave to Jin. We’ve never played this before on our own, maybe we’ll never play this again,” teased Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

“This is Jin’s song. This is called ‘The Astronaut’. And we send this with love to everybody in any situation anywhere,” he added. “This is particularly for Jin and the BTS boys.”

Watch Coldplay perform ‘The Astronaut’ below:

Coldplay and BTS’ Jin performed ‘The Astronaut’ live for the first time in October 2022, during the Buenos Aires, Argentina stop of the British band’s tour. That performance came a day after Jin released the song.

‘The Astronaut’ was co-written by both Jin and Coldplay, alongside co-producer Norwegian DJ Kygo. The song marked the second collaboration between BTS and Coldplay, following their chart-topping single ‘My Universe’.

Coldplay has performed ‘The Astronaut’ live one other time, during their appearance on a February 2023 episode of Saturday Night Live. They had also played a mash-up of ‘Human Heart’ and Fix You’ during that guest appearance.

Meanwhile, Coldplay are reportedly set to headline Glastonbury Festival next summer alongside Dua Lipa and Madonna. However, no performers for the 2024 festival have been officially announced as yet.

Odd Mob and OMNOM Drop Entrancing Single, "Mind Awake, Body Asleep"

With “Mind Awake, Body Asleep,” Odd Mob and OMNOM walk the tightrope between the conscious groove and the somnambulant dream.

The two producers have found themselves consistently aligned on the creative front in 2023. Most recently, they’re riding high off of the meteoric, Beatport chart-topping single “Losing Control,” which arrived on John Summit’s Experts Only imprint in mid-September.

Now, “Mind Awake, Body Asleep,” marks what can arguably be considered a spiritual follow-up to “Losing Control.” The track embodies a familiar ominous atmosphere, with dynamic rhythms underpinned by an equally hypnotizing vocal hook that takes us deeper into a captivating trance with each passing moment.

While “Losing Control” was characterized by sweeping, blow-the-doors-off synth work, the duo showcase a more nuanced approach on their latest effort, bringing an increasingly intricate level of depth to their groove. The offering marks yet another welcome evolution for one of the most successful collaborative forces of the year in dance music.

Odd Mob and OMNOM’s “Mind Awake, Body Asleep,” is out now by way of Insomniac Records. Take a listen below.

Celebrating 10 years of III Points under the disco ball [Review] – Dancing Astronaut

If you were to ask any III Points attendee what makes the festival so special, all answers lead to how the festival is utterly and quintessentially a representation of Miami.

Tucked away in Wynwood, Miami’s vibrant arts district, III Points is a celebration of house, techno, and everything in between. This year’s edition, held from October 20-21, 2023, welcomed more than 50,000 attendees to two nights of auditory exploration beneath the disco ball, metaphorically and literally suspended over the festival’s primary stage, Mind Melt. The venue, surrounded by graffiti-decorated warehouse walls, craft breweries, and pop-up art galleries, provides a snapshot of Wynwood’s evolving landscape. Even though traces of soon-to-be condo developments dot the surrounding skyline, its sights are set on representing an uninterrupted major cultural hub for the foreseeable future.

The 2023 edition marked a decade of III Points, positioning itself as the cooler, older sibling to Miami’s mainstream party scene. With an unwavering commitment to authenticity, the festival tapped into the roots quite literally under their feet and showcased Miami’s homegrown talent at the forefront. As quoted by Billboard, 60% of the lineup comprised of local artists, such as Nick León, Danny Daze, Iggy Pop, and recent Chicago transplant, John Summit, who closed the weekend out with longtime idol and Chicago house music icon, Green Velvet.

Although house and techno has historically dominated the lineup, this milestone edition welcomed an interdisciplinary roster of talent that weaved the worlds between dance, rock, hip-hop, Latin, art pop, and a myriad of sub-genres that connect the dots. With 11 unique stages, attendees could cherry-pick their perfect night, from early afternoon beats to the 4:00 a.m. curfew that defines Miami’s nightlife.

The Mind Melt stage served as a focal point for diverse performances, featuring leading artists like Fred again.., Caroline Polachek, and Jamie Jones. Under the enchantment of a suspended disco ball, this stage truly came alive. The S3quen3 stage, a marriage of a darkened warehouse dancefloor and an illuminated glitch cube, became a haven for hardcore rave and techno enthusiasts, with Richie Hawtin, VTSS, and Jeff Mills delivering nearly religious experiences.

A special nod goes to the otherworldly Despacio experience, where James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and 2manydj’s David & Stephen Dewaele transformed an open room with their custom-built speaker system for a crescendoing, six-hour vinyl performance that defied any notion of convention.

With 10 years under their belt, it’s clear that III Points isn’t just a music festival; it’s a living, breathing art installation. A creative hub and multidisciplinary space, it stands as an indisputable testament to the beating heart of Miami’s alternative music and arts scene. Where it continues to be a dynamic, creative palette reflecting the city’s identity, one thing is for sure: Miami sure doesn’t shy away from a damn good party.
