Madonna wanted to “feel more connected” to audience on ‘Celebration Tour’, says stage designer

Madonna‘s stage designer has said that she wanted “feel more connected” to the audience on her current ‘Celebration Tour’.

  • READ MORE: Madonna live in London: pop queen grapples with her legacy

The Queen of Pop recently kicked off her greatest hits tour at The O2 in London last month which saw her perform over 40 songs from her back catalogue including her most famous hits and a number of deep cuts.

Speaking about the tour, Ric Lipson of architecture firm Stufish told Rolling Stone UK: “She knew that she wanted to base the show through the eyes of her being spiritually born in New York City. From the early days of landing in Times Square and going down to the Lower East Side, CBGBs and the clubs, the places she hung out when she was young. Her concept of the show then evolved into a geography that would lay out the whole city.

“But she’s always wanting to do something different and asked how we could do an arena tour that didn’t feel like Madame X or previous arena tours. But also one that felt correct for the way people are touring at the moment. Since 2015, social media has completely changed in the way that people are consuming things through their phones and taking shots of things. So for us, it was all about how do we display and portray Madonna in a different way that also makes her feel more connected?”

As NME‘s Nick Levine noted in his five star review of the show, it features “a series of spectacular set-pieces referencing iconic highlights from Madonna’s reign – ‘Vogue’ is presented as a raucous ballroom extravaganza; the Bjork-penned ‘Bedtime Story’ leads into ‘Ray Of Light’, spotlighting her ’90s electronica era. Coupled with a fiendishly detailed sound mix from producer Stuart Price, which fills each intro and segue with snippets of Madgebangers that didn’t make the setlist, there is a huge amount to take in.”

At one point during ‘Live To Tell’ she also travelled across the arena on a flying platform while photos of all the close friends she lost to AIDS were shown on the surrounding screens.

“She knew she wanted to sing that song and she knew she wanted to sing it for those people,” Lipson added. “It’s [the platform] like a time machine. The first time she uses it is when she’s looking back at the eighties and it’s a very powerful moment, which for me is one of the most emotional things I’ve seen in a pop show. Ever.”

Musical director Stuart Price previously said they felt it was important that the icon’s singing on her current tour is “all live vocal”.

He added at the time: “There’s a couple of spoken word sections in the show where we just use track. But it’s all live vocals; there’s backing singers – there always has been – but it’s all live vocals. I hope that you hear the humanness of the vocal coming across as well.”

Over the weekend, reports suggested Madonna will headline Glastonbury Festival next summer alongside Dua Lipa and Coldplay. Organiser, Emily Eavis has since responded saying the reports are “untrue”.

The icon is due to kick off the North America leg of her tour at Brooklyn Barclays Center in New York on December 13. You can find any remaining tickets here.

William Black finds ‘The Nature of Hope’ on heartfelt junior album – Dancing Astronaut

William Black has come a long way since he officially started releasing music in the mid-2010s. From his debut album Pages to Pieces—named one of Dancing Astronaut‘s Top Albums of 2021—to working alongside the likes of SLANDER, ILLENIUM and more, Black has long established himself as one of the forefront artists in both the melodic and future bass scene. And now, he’s reaffirming that for the nth time with the delivery of his junior album, The Nature Of Hope.

Rooted on life experiences of finding hope while at some of his lowest points, The Nature of Hope sees Black return to Lowly—a label he’s called home since 2017—for what can only be described as his most ambitious, emotive and sonically diverse collection of songs yet. Spanning 14 tracks—including singles like “Last Forever” with Jordan Shaw, “Beautiful Nothing” with Fairlane and gavn!, “In The Cold” with Dabin and James Droll, “Lie”, and “My Own Advice” with longtime-friend ILLENIUM and Alana Springsteen—as well as new collaborative work with Sofia Quinn, Trella, Linney, and FRND, The Nature Of Hope beautifully succeeds Pieces. The album showcases both his growth as an artist and his ability to push musical boundaries while writing a story about hope and hopelessness, and how one cannot exist without the other.

In conjunction with the album’s release, Black announced phase one of his album tour for early 2024 that spans 20 dates, which includes stops at Los Angeles’ famed Hollywood Palladium and New York’s Terminal 5 to name a few.

Oasis on course for ninth UK Number One album with ‘The Masterplan’ reissue

Oasis are on course to score their ninth UK Number One album with the 25th anniversary reissue of their B-sides record ‘The Masterplan’.

The 1998 album reissue was released last Friday (November 3) and made available in various formats, including CD, cream cassette and limited-edition double vinyl in a variety of colours.

It was released as a compilation LP of B-sides and originally featured on singles from Oasis’ first three albums, ‘Definitely Maybe’ (1994), ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ (1995), and ‘Be Here Now’ (1997).

Should it reach the chart summit, it will be Oasis’ first Number One album since their 2010 compilation ‘Time Flies… (1994-2009)’.

Taylor Swift‘s ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ which is this week’s Number One, is set to come in at Number Two, according to the Official Charts Company  while BTS singer Jungkook looks set to score the highest-charting solo album from any member of the K-pop boyband in the UK with his debut ‘Golden’.

Liam Gallagher recently announced the ‘Definitely Maybe’ 30th anniversary tour, due to take place in 2024. Full dates and tickets will be available here. Liam is planning on doing the tour with former Oasis guitarist Bonehead, but not Noel. According to Liam, Noel was approached and refused to play the upcoming tour.

Oasis split up in 2009 after an altercation in Paris just after they were due to play Rock en Seine festival.

While speaking to NME as part of the In Conversation series, Noel was recently asked if Oasis had ever been made any offers for a Britpop reunion package tour with other bands, to which he said that “inevitably, it will happen”, but that “there’s never really been a serious offer about ‘The Big O’ getting back together, but there you go”.

Meanwhile, The Beatles‘ “final” song, ‘Now And Then‘, is on track to become the band’s 18th Number One single.

Liam recently shared his verdict on the long-awaited “final” song by the Fab Four – revealing that he finds it “heartwarming”.

Here are all the winners from the MTV EMAs 2023

Taylor Swift was the big winner at the 2023 MTV EMAs, securing the awards for Best Artist, Best Live and Best Video.

This year’s Europe Music Awards ceremony was called off last month due to “the volatility of world events” relating to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

However, on Sunday (November 5), on what would have been the EMAs date, MTV released the winner’s list.

Jungkook, Måneskin and Nicki Minaj all won two awards each. The BTS star won Best K-Pop and Best Song for ‘Seven’ featuring Latto, Måneskin won Best Rock and Best Italian act, while Minaj secured the Best US Act and Best Hip-Hop.

Billie Eilish won Best Pop Act after going up against Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo and Swift.

The ceremony was due to take place in Paris at the Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition centre, but organisers said “this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration”, adding: “With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning.”

Organisers also cancelled “out of an abundance of caution” for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans and partners “who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life”.

The event was due to feature performances from Jungkook, Reneé Rapp and Sabrina Carpenter, and the winners for Best Group and Biggest Fans have not yet been announced.

‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ outsells original in release week

‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ has outsold the original in sales for debut release weeks, making it her best first week for an album ever.

  • READ MORE: Taylor Swift – ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ review: her best album will never go out of style

The new album has topped the Billboard 200 with 1.653million equivalent album units, according to Billboard, which puts it in the lead ahead of her previous personal best, last year’s ‘Midnights‘ at 1.578million.

The original ‘1989’ sold 1.297million units in its first week in 2014, meaning this is the first ‘Taylor’s Version‘ re-recording to surpass the original in its opening week in sales alone.

As per the publication, the achievement marks the largest week for any album by units earned since Adele‘s ‘25‘, which debuted at 3.482million album units.

Sales of ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ were also boosted by its availability in 15 collectible physical formats, including vinyl, CDs and cassette tapes.

The news comes after it was reported that ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ earned the biggest opening week on the UK Albums chart this year.

This makes ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ her eleventh album to hit Number One in the UK charts. Previous chart-topping albums include ‘Red’ (2012), ‘1989‘ (2014), ‘reputation‘ (2017), ‘Lover‘ (2019), ‘folklore‘ (2020), ‘evermore‘ (2020), ‘Fearless (Taylor’s Version)‘ (2021), ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)‘ (2021), ‘Midnights‘ (2022) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (2023).

The re-recording of ‘1989’ also broke two Spotify records, with Taylor Swift becoming the most-streamed artist on a single day in the platform’s history.

In a five-star review of ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’, NME wrote: “As we’re witnessing the biggest year of Swift’s career so far, the artist’s ability to reinvent herself while honouring her core blueprint is only becoming more impressive. By journeying into the past, it’s a reminder that the future of Taylor Swift may hold so much more that will continue to surprise us.”

In other news from the singer, Swift is the most translated artist in the world, according to a new study.

Cannibal Corpse’s colouring book has been banned in Germany

Cannibal Corpse have announced their first-ever colouring book, set for release next month.

This past weekend (November 2), the legendary death metal band took to social media to announced the book, titled The Official Cannibal Corpse Colouring Book. The colouring book – targeted at adults – is due for release on December 1 and is available for pre-order in the UK via Eyesore Merch now at £12.99.

The book – which the band claim is “the first colouring book in history” to come with a Parental Advisory warning – features some of the band’s most infamous and gory artwork, designed by artist Vincent Locke.

The book – like much of Cannibal Corpse’s earlier albums – has been banned for sale in Germany over explicit content and graphic imagery. An official comment on the Eyesore Merch site reads: “This product is not available for sale in Germany. Any orders to German addresses will be refunded. We apologize for any inconvenience caused, but this release is subject to German law and regulations.”

The band’s Alex Webster said of the colouring book: “This book is a great new way for Cannibal Corpse fans to enjoy the incredible artwork of Vincent Locke”.

Locke, who designed the entire colouring book, said in a statement: “Going over art for the book, it was surprising to see just how much 30 years of collaboration yielded. It’s rare that I see it all compiled together. There are a few pieces that had to be included, some that were favourites of myself or the band, and some that just lent themselves well to colouring.”

He added: “You’ll probably got through a lot of red, but be creative, have fun, make it your own!”

Cannibal Corpse most recently released their 16th studio album, ‘Chaos Horrific’, in September via Metal Blade records.

Lauryn Hill says fans are “lucky” she made it on stage after cancelled shows

Lauryn Hill has responded to those who have complained about her missing recent shows, saying that fans are “lucky” she makes it on stage every night.

  • READ MORE: Why ‘The Score’ is one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever

The former Fugees singer, who is currently on tour around North America celebrating the 25th anniversary of her Grammy-winning debut solo album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’, has had to cancel or postpone multiple shows due to an ongoing vocal injury.

A concert in Philadelphia on October 22 had to be moved, while Hill was forced to cancel an October 30 show in Fort Worth, Texas.

Yesterday (November 4), she played at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, and took the time to defend herself against those who were complaining about her absences.

“They say, ‘she’s late a lot’,” she said, in a video posted online that you can watch above. “Yo, y’all lucky I make it on this stage every night.”

“I don’t do it because they let me do it, I do it because I stand here in the name of god,” she continued.

“God is the one who allows me to do it, who surrounded me with family and community when there was no support, when the album sold so many records and no-one showed up and said ‘hey, would you like to make another one? So I went around the world and I played the same album over and over and over and over again. Because we’re the survivors. We’re not just the survivors, we’re the thrivers.”

Hill issued a statement after cancelling the Fort Worth show, explaining that “I fought through the last couple shows, pushing my voice, and masking the injury with medication. This isn’t safe or sustainable. I woke up this morning hoping to have enough voice to get through tonight, but I can barely talk let alone sing or rap.”

The shows are being co-headlined by Hill’s group the Fugees, with two dates currently remaining, in Oakland on November 7 and finishing in Seattle on November 9.

Hill recently performed her debut album in full back in June as part of The Roots‘ festival The Roots Picnic. Fugees hosted a surprise reunion as part of Hill ‘s set.

The Roots served as her backing band for the performance, and she was then joined by Fugees bandmates Pras Michel and Wyclef Jean, performing six tracks including ‘Killing Me Softly’, ‘Ready Or Not’ and ‘Zealots’.

The unexpected mini-reunion came after the band cancelled their planned 25th anniversary tour in January 2022, with Michel then convicted for his involvement in a billion-dollar Malaysian money laundering scheme in April.

The group said at the time of the cancellation that the COVID pandemic had “made touring conditions difficult, and we want to make sure we keep our fand and ourselves healthy and safe”, though it was later reported that the dates were thrown into jeopardy by Michel’s legal issues.

Tupac Shakur has street in Oakland, California named after him

A street in Oakland, California has been renamed Tupac Shakur Way, in honour of the late rapper.

READ MORE: Who killed Tupac? Everything we know about hip-hop’s greatest mystery

The road in question forms a section of the MacArthur Boulevard in the city, close to where Tupac lived in the 1990s.

An official renaming ceremony was held at the site, attended by members of Shakur’s family as well as a number of Bay Area hip-hop legends, including MC Hammer, E-40, Money-B and Too Short.

“Let his spirit live on the rest of these years in these streets and in your hearts,” said Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, to the gathered crowd.

“He was the realest rapper ever. He was very bright, he was a triple threat: movies, rap, poet, everything,” E-40 added. “He made positive music, self esteem-lifting music for females, like ‘Dear Mama’ and ‘Brenda’s Got a Baby’.” Watch his full speech below.

MC Hammer said that Tupac was “hands down, the greatest rapper ever, there’s not even a question of that.”

Last week (November 2), Duane “Keffe D” Davis pleaded not guilty to Tupac’s 1996 murder. He had been arrested on September 29 and faces a charge of open murder with use of a deadly weapon, with a gang enhancement.

Shakur died at the age of 25 on September 13, 1996, several days after he was shot on September 7. The identity of his killer has remained a mystery for nearly three decades.

The rapper was targeted in Las Vegas as he was leaving the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon fight at the MGM Grand and was en route to a nightclub with Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight.

A white Cadillac pulled up next to the pair’s vehicle on the passenger side and an unidentified gunman fired 14 shots. Shakur was hit four times, later dying from his injuries.

Last month, Suge Knight told TMZ: “I never thought Keefe D would get arrested,” he said. “Nor do I want to see him get arrested.”

When asked if he’d testify in any eventual trial, Knight said that he believed he wouldn’t be called to do so.

“I wouldn’t be on the stand to testify for somebody, for what?” he said. “One thousand per cent. I wouldn’t go. I wouldn’t testify. None of that shit.”

Insomniac Outdoes Itself for the Biggest and Best Escape Halloween to Date [Event Review]

Original Photo by Ivan Meneses for Insomniac Events

It’s been a week since Escape Halloween took over the NOS Events Center for its 12th edition, and like most things Insomniac, the festival just got bigger and better. Featuring mind-blowing production, sick attention-to-detail, immersive Halloween experiences, blistering sets, immaculate vibes, and plenty of space to move and groove to; Insomniac pulled out all the stops for the largest Halloween festival on the continent.

It was our first time back at the NOS Events Center since last year’s Countdown and our first Escape since 2019! One of the things that definitely stood out is how wide open and easily accessible everything was. Insomniac has definitely taken steps to make it easier to access all of the vast NOS Events Center where their events take place. At no point at all did I deal with bottlenecks or crowd congestion.

The other thing that, of course, stands out upon entering the Escape festival grounds is just how immersive it is. With the exception of EDC, (the flagship festival) Escape has without a doubt the highest production values, the most performers, the most Easter Eggs to explore for. Escape is simply massive, and, if you ask me, is the best of Insomniac’s Southern California festivals. It certainly didn’t hurt that the weather was absolutely perfect for the weekend too.

Original Photo by Jake West for Insomniac Events

I’m not wrong when I say that this was the biggest Escape to date, they actually added a fifth stage inside the Citrus building, Wicked Woods. Crazy Town, which ostensibly serves as Downtown Escape, is a perfect meeting spot. Its location is easily accessible from all stages, and its landmarks are unmistakable. The fire organ is a sight to behold and always has a performance popping off, it’s the perfect place to sit and take in the splendor of the festival grounds. The Crazy Town fountain is also a perfect spot to reunite with your crew and figure out the next move. Oh, and of course, they’re all great photo ops too.

As far as the stages go, they were all top notch. The main stage is, of course, The Grimm, a massive cloaked skeleton with its two hands stretched out clutching two spherical stones. Again, outside of EDC, this has to be the best Insomniac stage around. The lasers got major reinforcements and the huge video panels lining the ceiling of the mega-structure helped to create an even more immersive experience. Even if you were seated on the fake grass or at the tables outside of the mega-structure, you still felt like you were immersed in the stage. Sound and video production were A+ this weekend.

Original Photo by Jamal Eid for Insomniac Events

The second stage was Feeding Grounds, also inside a mega-structure. This stage’s theme was a massive spider web. White canvas adorned the ceiling of the mega structure and instead of a disco ball, there was a massive black widow spider hanging above the stage in its place. The third stage was Sanitarium, a slightly smaller mega-structure, its rectangular video panels would play macabre and disturbing images of a mad surgeon conducting unsound experiments.

The stage that probably got the best treatment of all though was Sewer District, the Factory 93 stage. When I went to Escape in the past this was not a stage I gave much thought to. I figured let the techno snobs hang in the back. Well, techno has now permeated the mainstream and I was keen to check out a set at Sewer District. Insomniac fully leaned into shipping trailers and an underground warehouse type of vibe. The light panels were just right and the sound was pitch perfect. I talked to several headliners who said that Sewer District had some of the best sets of the weekend.

Original Photo by Marlene Sanchez for Insomniac Events

Speaking of the sets, let me tell you about them. Every single DJ absolutely brought it this weekend. Everyone’s got to go a little bit deeper, a little bit darker, especially the closers, to match that Halloween vibe, and that’s exactly what we got. Friday night really didn’t get going until I watched AFROJACK’s set at the Grimm. The Dutch legend did not disappoint, dropping a massive set that ignited the crowd. This was the set that truly set the night off as AFROJACK took full advantage of the Grimm’s production capabilities.

After that I caught a little hardstyle over at Sanitarium, then headed back to the Grimm for Above & Beyond. Much like AFROJACK’s set, the crowd packed in the stage to overflow capacity. Jono & Paavo threw down a captivating set that had the crowd enraptured. Above & Beyond always strives for “moments like these” and they certainly achieved it at Escape.

After A&B, I headed over to Feeding Grounds, which was hosted by Bassrush for the night, to have my face just melted off. ATLiens were well into their set of wonky dubstep, rap mashups and trap beats. It’s always nice to see the different vibes at different stages, but aside from the Grimm, the Basscon stage was bringing better vibes than the Bassrush stage. Zomboy followed up ATLiens and also proceeded to ignite the crowd.

Original Photo by Felicia Garcia for Insomniac Events

I proceeded back over to the Grimm, but I made a quick stop at the new stage, Wicked Woods. I’m always a sucker for an indoor stage, and Insomniac made the most of the space they were given. Setting up a mini forest behind the DJ booth as well as a circular video board, Wicked Woods was a huge come up if you happened upon it. Not too crowded, but still stellar production. I watched a little bit of K?d’s Throwback Set and I wish I had caught more.

Finally back to the Grimm, Kaskade closed the night with an incredible set that saw him lean into the REDUX sound and turn the Escape mainstage into an underground club. The lasers and stage production could not have been more on point.

We got there nice and early on Sunday. As I mentioned before I started things out at Sewer District and caught Charles D. Despite the early time slot and smaller crowd, the vibes were on point for Sewer District. I was now prepared for techno on Halloween weekend. I flitted between stages and sets checking out TOBEHONEST at Sanitarium, Ship Wrek at the Grimm, who drew a massive and rowdy crowd for such an early time slot, and Rossy at Feeding Grounds, who killed it with her blend of bass house and trap.

After that, it was back to the Grimm for Matroda’s massive house set. Along with the permeation of techno into the mainstream, the re-eruption of house music has to be noted too. My god, people absolutely love house music. I didn’t recognize a single song Matroda dropped, but it was still a dope set and the vibes were unmatched. Tchami came on next and dropped a set for the ages. Opening with the AC Slater x Chris Lorenzo (Fly With Us) track “Seismic”, Tchami’s mix of French house was absolutely perfect. The lasers and pyro also started taking over.

DJ Snake took the stage next and turned the Grimm into an absolute trap house. The beats were coming hard and fast with DJ Snake, and the packed crowd was more than ready for all of his hits. “Southside”, “Trust Nobody”, “Lean On” and he even dropped Knock2’s “dashstar”. A memorable set indeed.

Zedd was up next and he thrilled the crowd by opening with his “Where You Are” remix. The packed out crowd was chanting along with the lyrics. Zedd was also one of the few DJs to dress up for Halloween as he sported a Super Saiyan outfit (from Dragonball Z). Zedd dropped a masterful set consisting of his hits like “I Want You to Know” and “Stay the Night” on top of his energetic live edits and some EDM classics like Eric Prydz’s “Call on Me”.

Finally, Armin van Buuren closed out the weekend. Armin perfectly blended trance and techno for the best Halloween set imaginable. Armin maintained his signature sound while seamlessly blending in some dark techno beats that were perfect for the spooky season.

It was an absolute joy to be back at Escape after three full years away, the longest drought we’ve had between Insomniac festivals. The Pandemic denied headliners festivals in 2020. I didn’t get to Escape in 2021 because there was the Fall Edition of EDC a week before. I could have gone in 2022, but I didn’t. I’m elated to have made it back in 2023. Although no announcement has been made, I would expect Escape to return for its spookiest 13th edition next year.
