Life-size Ozzy Osbourne sculpture made from cake unveiled in Birmingham


A life-size homage to Ozzy Osbourne has been unveiled in the rock legend’s hometown of Birmingham – made entirely of cake.

The extravagant gateau depicts the Black Sabbath singer sitting upon his throne, eyes wide in a satanic grin, his finger outstretched at passers-by.

The sculpture is part of this year’s Cake International show at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, with Jane Lashbrook the cake artist that has brought the Prince of Darkness to life in sweet form.

Other famous figures that have been modelled at the exhibition include King Charles and the cast of Netflix show Stranger Things.

It continues an unusual period of time in Ozzy Osbourne news, after it was recently revealed that he once attempted to recruit a backing band for ‘80s pop maestro Rick Astley at the height of his fame. The offer was quickly given short shrift by Ozzy’s wife Sharon, however.

Sharon and Ozzy have recently been reflecting on the end of Ozzfest, the annual heavy metal festival that they founded. The final edition of the festival was held in 2018.

“It was a very weird beast because all the bands were our mates, but the managers were greedy and for some reason they thought that we were making billions on it and we weren’t,” said Sharon.

“We made a profit. But it was not like – we couldn’t retire on it,” she continued. “And managers and agents wanted more and more and more, and it just wasn’t cost-effective anymore. We stopped because it just wasn’t cost-effective.”

Last month, Ozzy also caught his family members and viewers off guard by admitting that he would willingly wet himself on stage as he was “wet anyway” from the on-stage antics.

Sharon also announced earlier this year that she intends to open an Ozzy Osbourne museum in Birmingham, which will feature a music education section and a café.

Ozzy also recently revealed that he has begun working on a new record, which he plans to record sometime in early 2024.

Ozzy revealed: “I’ve done two albums fairly recently, but I want to do one more album and then go back on the road.”

“I’m just starting to work on it now, and we’ll be recording in the early part of next year,” he added. “I want to take my time with this one!”

Watch Scientists Recreate the Sounds of a Spider Web With a Robotic "SpiderHarp"

Sorry arachnophobes, you’ll have to find another instrument to master.

Dr. Ross Hatton, Andrew Otto and Dr. Chet Udell found themselves asking what a spider’s web would sound like if it were a musical instrument. This curiosity weaved one of the most unique instruments you’ll ever see, the SpiderHarp.

Before you let your imagination get the best of you, no, this is not the story of an ordinary harp bitten by a radioactive spider that grants it superpowers. This is the innovative work of several brilliant engineers who used their knowledge of sound, physics and the behaviors of animals to create the spider-inspired musical instrument.

A lot of work went into the creation of the webbed SpiderHarp. Before anything was built, the instrument’s creators generated complex computer models to show how a real web acts when a spider tunes it to listen to the vibrations.

“Spiders that weave webs often have very poor eyesight, and so they understand the world through the vibrations in their webs,” Hatton said. “And it’s a complicated problem. There are many strings vibrating. But I had some engineering tools that I could use as an entry point to start cracking this nut of how does the whole web vibration communicate information to the spider.”

Once the large web was built, a “spider” needed to be made to translate the vibrations to us humans. So the team created a robotic arachnid whose feet send vibrations to the SpiderHarp’s software from the middle of the web, allowing the user to perform songs on the instrument, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting.

“It’s now known that many kinds of spiders listen to the vibrations of webs through their feet to detect prey and determine friend or foe,” reads the SpiderHarp website. “Some tune the strings of their web to provide better information about where and how far away on the web something is. SpiderHarp started as a large-scale model of an orb spider’s web, with the aim of uncovering the mystery of how spiders sense these vibrations and how it translates into information the spider uses to localize activity on its web.”

They cast their spell from the depths of a dark dungeon — a sonic hypnosis that intertwines a powerful bass line with pulsating melodies and rhythmic synths, then further intensify the suspense with an eerie vocal riff — all while deftly avoiding a predictable drop.

Freddie Mercury thought ‘Somebody To Love’ was “better” than ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’


Queen’s Freddie Mercury thought ‘Somebody To Love’ was “better” than ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, according to a roadie who once worked with the band.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio after ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was named ‘greatest song of all time’ by over 6500 listeners, former roadie and author of Queen Uncovered Peter Hince remembers the band coming up with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and Mercury’s thoughts on the track.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio he explained: “The band were recording [album] ‘Night At The Opera’ and we were going around all these different studios in London and doing bits in each place so I was hearing bits and pieces of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, but I didn’t hear the whole thing for quite some time. I remember hearing the opera bit and thinking it’s going to be an introduction tape for the live show – I had no idea it was a song!”

He continued: “The video is arguably what helped it become so huge in Britain…and the other thing is that, sadly, Freddie isn’t around anymore and it’s one of his legacies that piece of music so is still something people find very emotional.

“Also, nothing really had been done like it before and probably nothing since – with all the technology now it is easier to get certain studio effects whereas with Queen it was all about spending enormous amounts of time and being incredibly innovative. So I think part of [it’s appeal] is in the fact that it took so long to do and it was this real labour of love for Fred.’

“…Freddie actually said ‘Somebody To Love’ was a better piece of songwriting than Bo Rap. He felt that as a pure piece of songwriting it was better,” he concluded.

Queen had a further 18 entires in the poll, including ‘Under Pressure’ with David Bowie and ‘Somebody to Love: Live at Wembley’ with George Michael.

Greatest Hits Radio’s Network Content Director, Andy Ashton said in a statement: “In a time we’ve attracted our highest ever audience figures, this year’s chart has attracted our highest ever number of votes.

Last month, Queen and Adam Lambert began their 2023 ‘Rhapsody’ tour in Baltimore. 

The legendary band launched the acclaimed show back in 2019, and brought it to the UK, Ireland and Europe last year. Per a press release, Queen and their frontman Lambert promised an “even more ambitious show” at the upcoming dates.

AMF Celebrates Electronic Music's Very Best in Larger-Than-Life 2023 Edition

For yet another year, AMF enchanted the EDM faithful with a mesmerizing showcase during ADE.

Regarded by many as the apex of the world’s leading electronic music summit, AMF electrified the iconic Johan Cruijff Arena in a sold-out fest last year, celebrating its 10th anniversary while bringing together a staggering 40,000 fans. The arena-sized event is known for its jaw-dropping lineups, and its 2023 edition on October 20th was no exception.

As AMF entered its second decade, it introduced fresh headlining talent alongside dance music mainstays. Artists like Afrojack, Armin van Buuren and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike shared the stage with this generation’s new superstars, like Charlotte de Witte, James Hype and MEDUZA.

Missy Elliott says “words cannot describe” becoming first female rapper inducted into Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame


Missy Elliott has recalled her shock at becoming the first female rapper to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

The hip-hop icon is set to be inducted into the prestigious hall tonight (November 3), and will become the first female rapper to ever receive the honour.

Speaking about the acknowledgement of her discography in a new interview with Good Morning America, Elliott recalled her shock at being chosen and admitted that she initially thought an artist from the hip-hop world made the accomplishment “so far out of reach”.

She also stated that “words cannot describe” what it feels like to be taking to the stage tonight, and that she is particularly pleased to be given the induction this year – as 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

“No matter what people say, the hip-hop world is something special and unique,” she told host Robin Roberts.

She later added how it felt to be alongside fellow 2023 inductees: Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners, saying “To be even at a table with them is a blessing, past a blessing, there’s got to be a bigger word than that.”

Held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony will be broadcast live in the US Disney+ ( 8pm ET and 5pm PT). It will also be available to stream on the platform following the ceremony.

Huge names in the world of music, including Stevie Nicks, Elton John, St Vincent, Olivia Rodrigo, Brandi Carlile and Ice-T, will also be among those presenting and performing at the ceremony later tonight.

Others being inducted this year include Chaka Khan, Al Kooper and Elton John lyricist Bernie Taupin, DJ Kool Herc and Link Wrap, and Soul Train host Don Cornelius.

Presenting Missy Elliott with the award will be her friend Queen Latifah – who Elliott described in the interview as someone who “come before me, open that door, left it open.”

“I owe so many flowers, bouquets,” she added. “[There’s] not enough bouquets for those women that came before me. And she’s one of those women.”

After the induction, Missy Elliott will be just one of a handful of rappers whose plaques are in the Hall Of Fame museum in Cleveland. Others include Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G. and Public Enemy.

Elsewhere in the interview, Missy Elliot also confirmed that her mother will be in attendance for the ceremony – making it the first-ever performance that she had attended of the rapper. When asked why she has never seen her perform before, Elliott said it was because she often says “little words I didn’t ever want her to hear” in her lyrics.

In other Missy Elliott news, the rapper recently reflected on creating the iconic music video for her track ‘The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)’, recalling a slight wardrobe mishap on the shoot day.

Pendulum Fuse Drum & Bass With Heavy Metal in Electrifying New EP, "Anima"

Americans already have a hard enough time dancing to drum & bass—now they’re going to have to learn how to headbang while they do it.

Legendary electronic band Pendulum has returned with a new four-track EP that leans heavily into their signature rock-electronic hybrid sound. Titled Anima, their latest features appearances from the heavy metal superstar Matthew Tuck of Bullet for My Valentine and Scarlxrd, a young act that blends hard-hitting rock with hip-hop.

“Halo” wastes no time jumping into the sounds of metal with screeching bass, frenetic drums and provocative vocals screamed through Tuck’s gritted teeth. In contrast to the opener, “Colourfast” is bright and full of life. Pitched vocal samples bring a youthful energy to the upbeat and vibrant track that makes you want to get up and dance.

“Mercy Killing” calls upon Scarlxrd to mix his signature combination of hip-hop and metal with the band’s festival-grade drum & bass sound. The result is a track that bounces back and forth between slow-burning trap beats and blistering guitar riffs to create a disorienting amalgam.

“Silent Spinner,” Anima‘s final chapter, is “one of the darker tracks we’ve done,” said Pendulum’s Rob Swire. The track starts with ominous drums and minimal production but as it progresses, menacing synths are dangled in front of the us before a dramatic conclusion that feels like a computer malfunctioning in perfect harmony.

Meanwhile, Pendulum recently stunned fans with one of the most unexpected covers you’ll see all year. On triple j’s “Like A Version” program, they gave Taylor Swift’s 2022 single “Anti-Hero” a new electronic coat of paint.

Megan Thee Stallion “sheds her past” on ferocious new single ‘Cobra’


Megan Thee Stallion has shared a ferocious new single titled ‘Cobra’. Check it out below.

Dropped today (November 3), the single marks the first new music from the American rapper since she formally severed ties with label 1501 Certified Entertainment, following a legal dispute.

It arrives instead via her new independent music label, Hot Girl Productions, and follows her teasing new music online. The song centres around the 28-year-old “shedding” her past, and emerging into a new era of her career.

“Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past. Over and over again,” she announces at the beginning of the track. The single also comes with an eye-catching, cobra-inspired music video, which sees Megan crawl out of a snake’s mouth, and shed her skin as onlookers watch.

“Cobras exemplify courage and self-reliance. They stand tall and fierce in the face of challenges, teaching one to tap into their inner strength and rely on oneself to conquer their treats,” she wrote in a message (via Pitchfork). “Emulating the cobra helps one be more confident in the person they are within.” Check out the music video below.

The new track arrives on the heels of the rapper’s recent high-profile collaboration with Cardi B, which saw them release the track ‘Bongos’. It also comes just a month after she shared the song ‘Out Alpha The Alpha’, which was written for her project Dicks: The Musical.

It is not yet clear whether the single is part of a bigger release from Megan. Her last full-length album, ‘Traumazine’, arrived last year – the same year that she also hosted a spot on Saturday Night Live and made a cameo in the Disney+ series She-Hulk.

In more recent Megan Thee Stallion news, the rapper launched a new mental health resources website called Seize The Awkward in September – sharing details of it on her social media pages and describing it as “something that can help all of us”.
