Deap Vally share blistering cover of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Ventilator Blues’

Deap Vally have shared their latest single, a cover of The Rolling Stones song ‘Ventilator Blues’ – watch the lyric video below.

The Los Angeles-based rock duo announced in September that they intend to split up after releasing their upcoming album ‘Sistrionix 2.0’ early next year.

‘Sistrionix 2.0’ will be a re-visited and re-recorded version of their breakthrough LP, which was originally released in 2013. The record will be released in Spring 2024. Visit here to pre-order it.

‘Ventilator Blues’ was originally released on the Stones’ classic 1972 album ‘Exile on Main St.’. Speaking about their version, Deap Valley’s Lindsey Troy said: “Covering “Ventilator Blues” was a special privilege to pay homage to one of the greatest and most seminal bands in the history of rock ’n’ roll. We recorded this song in 2014 and it has been in the vaults ever since, so I’m glad it’s finally seeing the light of day,”

“’Ventilator Blues’, one of our favourite Rolling Stones songs, is a song about the inevitable end we are all hurtling towards, and we felt it was a perfect way to soundtrack the final chapter of Deap Vally,” she added.

The album’s lead single, also released in September, was ‘Baby I Call Hell (Deap Vally’s Version)’, which Troy described as “quintessential Deap Vally”.

“It was the first song we ever wrote as a band, so it’s very meaningful to our story,” she explained. “Re-recording that song was a lot of fun, but also a lot of pressure because we wanted to make sure the recording captured the magic of the song again.”

The duo also revealed details of the reasons behind their split – confirming that extraneous factors have left them struggling to fit recording and touring into their current lifestyles.

“That model isn’t compatible with our current lives,” Troy noted, with Edwards adding: “We found we just can’t function as a traditional band anymore… It’s time for both of us to explore motherhood and other avenues of our lives properly, rather than squeezing them into our artist’s hustle.”

“We need to find the balance where we can focus on the fun stuff, but have the freedom to make the music we love,” Troy concluded. “We just felt it would be fitting to go out with a bang, not a whimper. I felt marking this occasion should be a cathartic process: healing deep wounds, reconnecting with old friends and collaborators – and falling in love with Deap Vally all over again.”

Deap Vally are also preparing to play a final run of shows across North America, kicking off in San Francisco’s Casbah on November 11. Tickets for all those dates can be found here. The band have also stated that more dates will be revealed soon, including some UK shows.

Speaking about the track, Gallagher said: “I wrote this in one night during the pandemic. I wrote it and put the demo out. I wanted something positive and uplifting – just a real, uplifting tune. ‘We’re Gonna Get There In The End’ was originally released as a demo on New Year’s Eve 2020 before becoming the final track on his 2023 album. You can listen to and view the video, featuring footage from his Manchester Wythenshawe Park show over the summer, below.

Canadian Retrowave Artist Riotron Teams Up With Timmy Trumpet On Remix of ‘Justin’s Song’

Canadian singer/songwriter, Riotron, has teamed up with Australian club superstar Timmy Trumpet to reshape fan favorite hit “Justin’s Song” into an uplifting hardstyle-esque anthem like only Timmy Trumpet can do. Built on the back of the original track’s darker, melancholic chords, and a vocal hook that’s truly radio-ready, the new single adds Trumpet’s trademark blitzkrieg style making it a bright club jam.

Riotron said, “Timmy Trumpet is a genius. He flipped our dark little introspective song into full anthem mode” Riotron shared. “Now ‘Justin’ is everyone of us, chasing those dreams that won’t let us go.”

Timmy Trumpet declared, “I loved the original vocal the first time I heard it and knew with the right rework it could work great in my live sets. Making this was fun and I can’t wait to play it!”

Of course, Timmy is most famous for his full-on, no holds barred performances, high energy delivery and of course for his live trumpet playing prowess.

With an original visualizer collaboration coming from Titanic Sinclair (Poppy, Vic Mensa, Børns), the song itself takes you on an emotional journey into new realms for Riotron and his growing catalog of unusual dance music and collaborations.

Hailing from Winnipeg, Canada, Riotron is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Jeff Fettes. The electro-pop artist combines elements of 80s synthwave, EDM, and jazz into a distinctly unique sound. The name is derived from the hit song ‘Rio’ by Duran Duran and the 1982 fantasy sci-fi film ‘Tron’. Be on the lookout for more remixes, mind bending visuals, and Riotron’s first LP in the new year. “Justin’s Song (Timmy Trumpet Remix)” is Released via M3 Recordings.

Immerse Yourself in the Dreamlike Drum & Bass of What So Not and Daktyl's "Fever"

If there’s anyone to soundtrack our hypnagogic states, it’s What So Not and Daktyl.

With the profound ability to blend aching, dreamlike sound design with rave-fueled euphoria, both are revered producers in their own right. They’ve now joined forces to release a new track alongside a whimsical performance video, both of which EDM.com is premiering today in collaboration with Monstercat Instinct.

Indietronica meets drum & bass in “Fever,” which would lull you to sleep if not for the combustible rapture of its drops. With its sublime synths and floaty keys, the breathtaking track is a serotonin flusher.

What So Not begins by strumming a kalimba before taking the mic for a haunting verse. Daktyl then takes over the vocals for the pre-chorus, singing about the visceral nature of music and its capacity to shape our purpose. Check out the duo’s impassioned “Fever” performance video below.

“Personally, the lyrics to me are about dedication. Feverish passion, commitment and purpose,” Daktyl said. “For both Chris [What So Not] and I, we have found that through music. It is how we give shape to the world around us. Conversely, making music is absolutely an addiction. I cannot, and never want to, stop. Everyone is chasing this feeling that is within all of us, but can come in many forms, such as raising a family or teaching. It can of course take a darker shape, but it is important to try to bend it to the light, whatever that means to you.”

You can find “Fever” on streaming platforms here.

Liverpool’s Jacaranda Club hosts Beatles ‘Now And Then’ listening party

Liverpool’s Jacaranda Club hosted an emotional listening party for The Beatles‘ ‘Now And Then’ this afternoon (November 2).

Fans gathered to listen to the track, the last to feature all four original members, ahead of its premiere at 2pm GMT.

Pictures shared by the club, where The Beatles played their first ever gig, on their Instagram showed many fans in tears as the song was played.

A statement on the page read: “Now and Then, what a beautiful moment! Hundreds gathered at The Jacaranda to hear The Beatles’ last song ‘Now and Then’ for the first time. 23,039 days have passed since The Beatles played their first gig, yet today people stood in the very same venue and listened to new music by the band. Try and tell us magic isn’t real!”

Footage was also shared from inside the venue by local radio station, Radio City News.

The highly-anticipated project was first teased by Paul McCartney back in June when he confirmed that he was working on a new track with Ringo Starr, which would come together as the “final” song of the band’s discography.

The release stems from a demo tape recorded by late bandmate John Lennon and was completed with the help of AI – which lifted the songwriter’s vocals off the initial recording and allowed the surviving members to work with them.

Since first sharing details of the song, both McCartney and Starr have continued to tease the upcoming project for months. This included the latter revealing that he thought the project was “beautiful”, and later admitting that working on the single was “like having John Lennon back”.

Last night (November 1), a short film was broadcast on The One Show and the band’s YouTube Channel, which documented the history behind the track and how it came together.

The aforementioned poignant 12-minute film was also broadcast as part of a series of programmes on the BBC to celebrate the legacy of The Beatles.

The track has now been marketed as a double A-side with their 1962 debut UK single, ‘Love Me Do’ – combining their first single with their last.

A music video – which will be the first-ever music video directed by Peter Jackson – is also set for release tomorrow (November 3). According to the renowned filmmaker, the visual accompaniment will include new footage of McCartney and Starr, as well as recently unearthed footage of all four members.

Additionally, next week (November 10) will see The Beatles release new expanded editions of ‘1962-1966 (The Red Album)’ and ‘1967-1970 (The Blue Album)’, mixed in stereo and Dolby.

Immerse Yourself in Tomorrowland's Astonishing 2023 Mainstage in Official Aftermovie

If Tomorrowland’s reputation as a festival pioneer was ever in doubt, their 2023 aftermovie should silence it once and for all.

This year’s astonishing festival hosted 400,000 fans from over 200 different countries, who watched more than 750 of the world’s best DJs. But those numbers only scratch the surface.

Released today, the aftermovie immerses electronic music enthusiasts into Tomorrowland’s stupefying “Adscendo” mainstage, which remains a bastion of the culture.

The “Adscendo” mainstage at Tomorrowland 2023.

Tomorrowland

By the numbers, the stage is nothing short of extraordinary. At 141 feet, it eclipsed the height of the Guinness World Record-breaking “Big Beast” stage at Saudi Arabia’s SOUNDSTORM festival in 2021, which was just over 135 feet. To put that into perspective, you’d need to stack up 19 clones of the freakishly tall basketball superstar Victor Wembanyama, who stands 7′ 4″.

“Adscendo” also boasted 740 square meters of video tiles, 230 speakers and subs, 30 lasers, 48 fountains and over 1,000 lamps. The developers of Tomorrowland needed 50 days to build the stage and 13 days to break it down.

Check out Tomorrowland’s official 2023 aftermovie and its tracklist below. You can also watch full DJ sets by Alesso, Hardwell, Amelie Lens, Alok and many more here.

Listen to Empire State Bastard’s thrashing new track ‘Tired, Naw?’

Empire State Bastard have shared their vicious new track ‘Tired, Naw?’ – check it out below.

The song – the original version of ‘Tired, Aye?’ from 2023 album ‘Rivers Of Heresy‘ – opens with a wall of harsh instrumentals and screeching vocals from Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil.

According to a press release, much of the album was written remotely, with Mike Vennart laying down guitar, bass and guide drums before Simon Neil added his vocals.

However, with ‘Tired, Aye?’, while Neil added his vocal parts, he also removed everything else bar the drums in the process. Now, ‘Tired, Naw?’ re-introduces the track as Vennart had originally intended it.

“We’re delighted to share the fully suited, original version of ‘Tired, Aye?’: ’Tired, Naw?’,” Empire State Bastard shared in a press statement. “The magical Mike Bourne has created another outstanding, mind-bending video for the song. It’s pure nightmare fuel. Sweet dreams.”

Check it out below.

Speaking to NME during an In Conversation video interview earlier this year, Neil spoke about why now was the right time for the metal outfit to be trying something new. “We couldn’t have made this music, this album or this band even 10 years ago when we started talking about it,” he shared. “Our experiences in the meantime have given us the knowledge and the expertise to do it.”

He added that that he’s been “learning to scream with a bit of stamina for a change”.

Reviewing ‘Rivers Of Heresy’ back in August, NME described the record as a “wonderfully weird ultraviolence from Biffy spin-off”, adding: “With help from Slayer‘s Dave Lombardo and Bitch Falcon‘s Naomi Macleod – take us on a wild grindcore ride.”

Survey Reveals Over Half of Musicians Would Conceal Use of AI in Their Music

The viability of artificial intelligence in the creative arts is causing musicians to define where they stand with regards to embracing the rapidly proliferating technology.

As one might expect, opinions on the tech and its perceived impact vary widely, but one thing is clear: many artists are bringing AI into their creative process and even more desire to do so.

Those were two key takeaways from Pirate’s survey of over 1,000 artists on the issue. Pirate, a global studio network, provides spaces for over 365,000 musicians to create and record their music across the UK, US and Germany.

A new survey conducted by Pirate suggested over half of musicians would conceal the use of AI in their music.

Karolina Grabowska

One of the study’s striking revelations is that a considerable 25% of the surveyed musicians have already dabbled in AI-facilitated music production. This inclination toward AI isn’t just a fleeting fascination, as an additional 46% of those yet to experiment expressed a keen interest in leveraging AI music tools in their future endeavors.

However, the burgeoning wave of AI adoption unfurls a critical issue: the enigma of transparency. The statistics reveal a glaring divide in the making, as a mere 48% of artists are inclined to divulge the use of AI in their compositions to their audience.

Pirate’s CEO, David Borrie, weighed in on the findings, drawing parallels between the initial resistance towards the advancement of autotune in the late 2000s and the current reservations surrounding AI.

“Understandably, artists are hesitant about adopting AI in the studio, and also hesitant about broadcasting their use of this controversial new technology,” Borrie said. “It’s useful to look back at the introduction of tools like autotune which faced criticism in their early days, but eventually found their place in the music industry. AI’s journey toward becoming a standard tool in music creation may follow a similar path, as artists and audiences alike adapt to this innovation.”

Ace Frehley says new solo album will make Paul Stanley “look like an imbecile”

Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has claimed that his new solo album will make frontman Paul Stanley “look like an imbecile”.

Drama between Frehley and his former bandmate started earlier this year, after the KISS singer explained why the band didn’t perform when they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame back in 2014.

Among reasons was the “demanding” nature of the Rock Hall, which wanted KISS to take to the stage with its original members – Frehley and Peter Criss – which Stanley said would be “demeaning” to the band, adding: “‘Cause if you saw people onstage who looked like KISS but sounded like that, maybe we should be called PISS.”

Frehley subsequently threatened to release “dirt” on KISS if Stanley didn’t apologise, later sharing that he didn’t apologise, but called to say “fuck you”.

In a new interview, Frehley has now offered an update on his latest album, while also launching a fresh retaliation against Frehley.

“I think it may be the best album I’ve ever done to date,” he said during an interview with Indiana rock radio station 93.5 FM MAX (via Blabbermouth).

Asked if he every imagined his his solo career would have this kind of longevity, he said: “It was hard in the beginning, but now I’ve picked up a lot of steam. In fact, I remember when I first signed with eOne Music — now they sold the record company to MNRK Music Group, and I’m still working with the same people — but I remember the guy that got me signed to the label, he told me that, before [2009’s] ‘Anomaly’ came out, he said a lot of people said to him, ‘You’re not even gonna get the record.’

“Because Paul and Gene [Simmons] have pretty much tried to destroy my credibility by calling me a drunk and a drug addict and somebody who’s not dependable. But if that were the case, how did I make five albums? And I’ve been touring steadily for the last 10 years plus. It doesn’t make any sense.

The artist claimed that Stanley and Simmons “contradict themselves all the time”, adding: “Now they’re putting me down and saying if I came up and played with them on the farewell tour, it would mar their performance. Paul said on The Howard Stern Show, you might as well call the band PISS instead of KISS if I got up on stage with them. Well, when this album comes about, it’s gonna make him look like an imbecile.”

KISS’ current line-up consists of Stanley, Simmons, guitarist Tommy Thayer, and drummer Eric Singer. Frehley played with the group from its inception in 1973 until his departure in 1982 and embarked on a solo career. He also rejoined KISS in 1996 for their reunion tour.

Elsewhere in his radio interview, artist said his album is nearly done, adding: “I think it may be the best album I’ve ever done to date.”
