Interpol announce 2024 ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’ and ‘Antics’ anniversary shows

Interpol have announced further plans to play ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’ and ‘Antics’ anniversary shows in 2024.

The New York band recently performed the former in full at San Francisco’s Outside Lands in August while In July, Interpol also played ‘Antics’ in full at a special gig in Paris.

Now, they have taken to Instagram to announce a further four shows in South America kicking off in Chile at the Caupolicán Theatre on May 31, 2024 before wrapping up at São Paulo Audio in Brazil on June 7.

Tickets go on sale over the next week starting tomorrow (November 2) and can be purchased here.

“Next year, we return for an exclusive string of shows to celebrate the anniversaries of Turn on The Bright Lights and Antics. We can’t wait to see you all there! More to follow very soon…” the band wrote.

Speaking previously to NME in 2019, frontman Paul Banks said he “like[d] the idea” of the band hitting the road in 2024 for a special 20th-anniversary tour celebrating ‘Antics’. “I feel like there was a moment of reticence when we talked about [touring to celebrate debut album] ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’, which was ameliorated or abated by the fact that we were deep into a new release and facing forward with new work [with 2018’s ‘Marauder’],” he said. “I needed that in order to be able to look back and celebrate and older record.

“Since that, a lot of fans have told us that it was fun as shit. To see a band go back and play a whole record from top to bottom, I like it. I don’t know if there’s any thought about doing that for ‘Antics’, but I’m not categorically opposed. I find those kind of shows to just be fun celebrations.”

Recently, Interpol have invited numerous musicians to rework songs from their latest album ‘The Other Side Of Make Believe’ as part of their ‘Interpolations’ project. Daniel Avery, Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker, Jesu and Water From Your Eyes have all taken part, reimagining various songs from the album.

Mysterious Electronic-Alt Pop Group Purple Tears Open Up About Debut EP, "Tarzana"

Following acclaimed singles such as “Work It Out” and “Hole in My Pocket,” the enigmatic Purple Tears band have finally unveiled their debut EP, Tarzana.

Out now via Day One/Warner Records, the seven-track project not only makes for a perfect introduction to Purple Tears’ genre-bending sound, but also serves as a strong testament to their unyielding commitment to experimentation and originality. And with an anonymous “Grammy-winning” act allegedly behind the scenes, they’re making serious noise at the moment.

Tarzana is an explosive fusion of genres from front to back, intricately blending elements of pop, electronic, indie and hip-hop. It begins with the compelling “Work It Out,” which features the distinct voice of Swae Lee and sets the stage with mesmerizing production. Meanwhile, “I’m Listening” functions as an intimate confession set against a backdrop of warm vocoders while “I Need You Right Now” captivates with its larger-than-life vocal harmonies and arena-sized drums.

One of the EP’s standout tracks, the pensive “Tough Love,” is elevated by the talents of Murda Beatz and Kaycyy while “Hole in My Pocket” completes the sonic journey with its distorted guitar chords and intimate vocals. Each track from Tarzana is accompanied by a trippy visualizer, adding an extra layer to the distinctive Purple Tears experience.

EDM.com caught up with Purple Tears to discuss their decision to remain anonymous, their relationship with social media the rumors about Adam Levine being the voice behind the group.

EDM.com: Why did you choose to be anonymous, and what message are you trying to send with Purple Tears’ faceless nature?

Purple Tears: Our message is our music, not our faces. If we showed our faces, the world wouldn’t understand. We’d prefer our music remain at the forefront of conversation.

EDM.com: You said your music is catering to people in a world “suffering from online overshare.” What role did social media play in that approach? And do you think it’s detrimental or beneficial?

Purple Tears: Social media is detrimental. When we were kids, there wasn’t social media. It is a very archaic way of communicating. Low frequency, low vibration way of expression. Similar to how you look at fax machines or the pony express.

EDM.com: What do you have to say to people who think Adam Levine is behind Purple Tears?

Purple Tears: You know Adam couldn’t make songs like this 🙂

EDM.com: Let’s chat Tarzana. Can you discuss the most salient themes at the EP’s bedrock?

Purple Tears: There are a lot of topics we’ve never had the chance to sing about in our individual careers. We’ve been too scared to lose the ones we love by being too honest in our music. Now that they are long gone and just memories at this point, we can write freely from an open heart.

EDM.com: The project has some high-profile collaborators. Can you walk us through the creative process with Swae Lee?

Purple Tears: Swae Lee and one of the members in Purple Tears have worked together in the past. When we were in the studio recording “Work It Out” we knew immediately Swae would sound great on it. Using that relationship, we got in contact with Swae. He loved the track and “Work it Out (feat. Swae Lee)” came together.

EDM.com: There’s a lot of genre disparity here, but electronic seems to be its touchstone. Who or what has influenced you from around the world of electronic music?

Purple Tears: Some of our favorite electronic artists from the past, present and future would be The Zodiac, RÜFÜS DU SOL and XA=XI.

EDM.com: What’s next for Purple Tears?

Purple Tears: Some of us are going to a party tonight at Drake’s house. He asked us to bring a guitar and sing a few songs. So, we’ll see how that goes.

Grey Daze confirm debut UK tour in memory of Chester Bennington

Chester Bennington’s former band Grey Daze have announced their first-ever UK tour in memory of the late Linkin Park vocalist. Find all the details below.

  • READ MORE: Grey Daze – ‘Amends’ review: lost album from Chester Bennington’s former band is a reminder of his singular talent

Bennington founded the group with drummer Sean Dowdell in 1993. The former left the line-up in 1998, but later reunited with Grey Daze and was in the middle of re-recording music for a new album when he died in 2017.

Grey Daze have since released ‘Amends’, a record compiling reworked tracks from their back catalogue that were built around Bennington’s original vocal takes. Last year they dropped follow-up album ‘The Phoenix’, which again featured contributions from the late artist.

Today (November 1) the four-piece have confirmed a run of UK headline dates for next spring, dubbed the ‘For You Chester’ tour. It’ll mark Grey Daze’s debut live tour on these shores.

They’ll be fronted by Los Angeles singer Cris Hodges, who performed with the band in the US earlier this year. The current line-up is completed by Dowdell (drums), Mace Beyers (bass) and Cristin Davis (guitar).

Gigs are scheduled to take place in Bristol, Nottingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Wolverhampton and London in May 2024. Tickets go on general sale at 10am GMT this Friday (November 3) – you’ll be able to buy yours here.

Grey Daze’s 2024 UK tour dates are as follows:

MAY
12 – Thekla, Bristol
14 – Rescue Rooms, Nottingham
15 – Cathouse, Glasgow
16 – Rebellion, Manchester
17  –KK’s Steel Mill, Wolverhampton
18 – The Garage, London

Back in March, Mike Shinoda said Linkin Park wouldn’t perform with a hologram of Bennington. “Those are creepy,” he explained, adding: “For me, that’s a clear no. I’m not into that.”

Bennington’s son, Draven, also shared his debut song ‘F_w_Me’ this year under the name RVRND.

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Epiphone launch 1979 Flying V guitar

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett has joined forces with Epiphone to recreate the guitarist’s prized original ‘79 Flying V.

The new collaboration with Epiphone is described as a “painstaking recreation” of the original ‘70s model and pays homage to the iconic Flying V that has become synonymous with Hammett, as well as many other thrash metal icons.

The original model is also one that famously appeared on the band’s run of fan-favourite albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including ‘Kill ‘Em All’, ‘Ride the Lightning’, ‘Master of Puppets’, ‘…And Justice for All’ and the self-titled LP – more famously recognised as ‘The Black Album’.

“I am extremely honoured to be able to put out an Epiphone Flying V today,” Hammett said in a press release. “Epiphone represents great sounding guitars at accessible prices, which is fundamentally important for up-and-coming musicians. I’m beyond pleased that I can offer the ’79 Flying V in this capacity. It means so much to me to be able to put good guitars in the hands of young players.”

Two colourways are offered for the new 2023 Epiphone edition – purple metallic and ebony – and the new signature model also features a mahogany body, a one-piece mahogany neck and a custom bridge. As for the electronics, it comes with a pair of Gibson USA Calibrated T-Type humbuckers, a 3-way pickup selector toggle and a 1/4-inch output jack.

The Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V is available now for £1,349 and can be purchased here. Check out the final design in the promotional video below.

This isn’t the first time that the Metallica lead guitarist has released a signature guitar this year. Back in March, Hammett joined forces with guitar manufacturer Gibson to create replicas of his iconic “Greeny” Les Paul.

The design was based on the original 1959 model, which is iconic in the guitar world for having belonged to Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac) and Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy), before going to the thrash veteran.

In other Kirk Hammett news, the musician recently collaborated with Goodnight, Texas on the gritty single, ‘Runaways’. He has also been embarking on a global tour with Metallica to celebrate the release of their latest album ‘72 Seasons’. You can find remaining tickets for upcoming dates here.

ARTMS’ HeeJin say she hasn’t “made celebrity friends” since debut

ARTMS‘ HeeJin has opened up about the difficulties she has faced in socialising as a public figure.

HeeJin recently sat for an interview for the latest digital cover of Vanity Teenwhere she spoke candidly about the challenges she and other Korean celebrities face when it comes to forming social circles.

“There’s a common misconception that becoming an idol will lead to having many celebrity friends, but it’s actually quite challenging,” the ARTMS singer told the outlet.

She later revealed that she has few celebrities friends even now, despite having made her debut in 2016. “Maybe it’s because of my personality, but I don’t think I’ve made celebrity friends since my debut as an idol,” she added.

Elsewhere during the interview, HeeJin also spoke about upcoming music from ARTMS. The group features five members of LOONA, namely Kim Lip, Choerry, Jinsoul, Haseul and HeeJin herself.

The singer revealed that the group have something “in the planning stages” at the moment. “I can say that ARTMS will return next year with a fantastic album, just as if the seal has been broken,” she added.

Yesterday (October 31), HeeJin made a comeback as a soloist with her debut mini-album ‘K’. The record is led by title track ‘Algorithm’, marks her first solo release since her 2016 self-titled single, which had dropped ahead of her debut as a member of LOONA.

In July, her ARTMS bandmates and LOONA sub-unit Odd Eye Circle returned with the mini-album ‘Version Up’. The album came after the members signed with the Jaden Jeong-headed Modhaus after leaving Blockberry Creative last year with a publicised lawsuit.

In other K-pop news, Korean-American rapper Jessi has described her viral 2022 song ‘Zoom’ as an “annoying ass song” during her recent appearance on The Zach Sang Show.

She said that the song has been been “overplayed”, before telling host Zach Sang her thoughts on the song after having recorded it: “I overheard myself, and I was like, ‘Goddamn, I’m annoying’.”

Mitt Romney and his wife dress up as Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift for Halloween

US Senator Mitt Romney and his wife Ann have dressed up as Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift for their 2023 Halloween costumes.

The Utah Republican shared images of the couple’ss costume on Instagram today (November 1). Romney accompanied the post with a reference to the lyrics in Swift’s 2008 single, ‘Love Story’, writing: “It’s a love story, baby, just say yes!”.

Romney can be seen sporting Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs jersey and holding an NFL branded football, while Ann donned a blonde wig, red lipstick and a cheerleader costume reminiscent of the one Swift wore in the music video for ‘Shake It Off’.

The costume makes reference to the much-buzzy potential romance between Swift and the NFL tight end, who sparked relationship rumours last month after Swift attended a handful of Kelce’s football games.

During one game against the Chicago Bears at Missouri’s Arrowhead Stadium, Swift was spotted cheering for Kelce alongside his mother, Donna. Since then, the pop star has attended three more of Kelce’s games.

Kelce himself pre-empted the popularity of Halloween costumes bearing his likeness, saying during a recent press conference that his “[mou]stache and the 87 jersey was pretty iconic there for a little bit”. He continued: “I had it when I met Taylor for the first time.” Last week, it was reported that sales of Kelce’s Chiefs jersey surged by 400 per cent.

For Halloween in 2021, Romney dressed up as the titular character from the comedy television series, Ted Lasso. Swift, meanwhile, shared the re-released version of her album ‘1989’ last Friday. ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ includes five new songs, and Kendrick Lamar’s re-recorded verse on the original album single ‘Bad Blood’.

“‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ feels more symbolic than her previous re-releases,” NME wrote in a five-star review. “Not only is it another step closer to having a full back catalogue of albums that she will own, but it’s also a celebration of the moment Swift really took ownership of her pop sound.”

Fatboy Slim says a beloved Brighton venue faces a “slow death” if development goes ahead

Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, says a beloved Brighton venue faces a “slow death” if planning permission for a new development is allowed to go ahead.

More than 1200 people have objected to a planning application for a commercial building next to the Prince Albert pub, located on Trafalgar Street in the city and more than 14,000 have since signed a petition objecting to the plans.

The plans would see an existing car rental premises demolished to make way for a four-storey building (via the BBC). The plans will go before Brighton and Hove City Council on Wednesday (November 1).

Cook played a surprise gig at the venue on Monday (October 30). Speaking at the gig, he said: “It’s a long slow death over three or four years if the neighbours complain.

“In Brighton, we preserve our Grade II and Grade I listed buildings, we preserve Regency architecture because it’s part of what Brighton is. We should preserve music venues in the same way because they’re a more recent part of Brighton culture but a huge amount nonetheless.”
