NERO Seek the "Truth" on Lead Single From Upcoming Third Album, "Into The Unknown"

After eight years, NERO have finally returned to complete their album trilogy.

All the way back in August 2021, the influential electronic music trio announced the follow-up to 2015’s Between II Worlds album. Since then, fans have had to stay patient as Nero tided them over with their unexpected RL Grime collaboration “Renegade” and solo releases from Joseph Ray.

Now, after several sci-fi social media teasers, NERO have announced that their next album Into The Unknown is coming in 2024. They also shared the record’s debut single, “Truth.”

Seemingly the album’s introduction, “Truth” sets the tone for what’s to come with a long, dramatic opening. Featuring words from The Mushroom Hunters by the legendary writer Neil Gaiman, a story of humanity’s constant evolution and quest for knowledge is told. This gives way to a cybernetic soundscape consistent with the futuristic themes of NERO’s previous albums.

The track’s ominous, driving bassline contrasts with its electric keys in a way that makes you feel like you’re speeding through a dystopian megacity at a blistering pace. This theme holds true in the accompanying music video, which shows the trio in a monochromatic world with visuals of supermassive celestial objects and their iconic stage.

Check out the “Truth” music video below ahead of next year’s release of Into The Unknown.

Everything Everything share ‘Cold Reactor’ and more album details

Everything Everything have shared a new single called ‘Cold Reactor’ as well as more details about their new album, ‘Mountainhead‘, including the tracklist.

  • READ MORE: Everything Everything – ‘Raw Data Feel’ review: A.I. bot’s lyrics outshone by pop gold

‘Cold Reactor’ is the first taste of the Manchester band’s seventh album. The LP is released on March 1 and is available to pre-save/pre-order here.

Singer Jonathan Higgs said of the new single: “‘Cold Reactor’ is about striving for an advanced future and exponential growth at the cost of our own personal worlds and mental wellbeing. Lives lived through screens and isolation, leading to disconnected and emotionless reactions in the form of symbols.”

In keeping with the album’s dominant theme about how future technology might impact humankind – good and bad – ‘Cold Reactor’ arrives with a music video co-directed by Higgs and the band’s long-time collaborator Kit Monteith. The bandmembers are seen dressed in yellow uniforms as they summit a mountain and begin to tear it apart.

The album meanwhile, is centred on the concept of “Mountainhead”, described in press material as “an alternate society in which those at the bottom of society’s ladder are forced to work relentlessly to keep its elite, at the mountain’s peak, elevated”.

Higgs added of the concept: “In another world, society has built an immense mountain. To make the mountain bigger, they must make the hole they live in deeper and deeper. All of society is built around the creation of the mountain, and a mountain religion dominates all thought. At the top of the mountain is rumoured to be a huge mirror that reflects endlessly recurring images of the self, and at the bottom of the pit is a giant golden snake that is the primal fear of all believers.

“A ‘Mountainhead’ is one who believes the mountain must grow no matter the cost, and no matter how terrible it is to dwell in the great pit. The taller the mountain, the deeper the hole.”

The release of ‘Cold Reactor’ follows the band announcing a UK tour that kicks off next March. See the dates here.

Tickets for the 2024 UK tour go on sale next Friday (November 3) at 9am GMT and will be available to purchase here. Additionally, pre-sale tickets are also offered to fans who pre-order the new album. Visit here to do so now.

‘Mountainhead’ is the group’s first new album in more than a year following ‘Raw Data Feel’, which arrived in May 2022.

ZUSO Delivers Mesmerizing Dnb Single “Hold Me”

ZUSO is a project from Australian producer Gabriel Cuenca, who has crafting an mesmerizing atmospheric-house sound that is simply irresistible. His ability to create warm soundscapes that whisk your mind blissfully away is a true talent, and is proving to be an artist to keep an eye on for this next year.

His latest single “Hold Me” provides a more liquid drum and bass feel, paired with an ethereal vocal that has an intoxicating effect over your spirit. Soothing atmospherics and escapism are two reoccurring themes found in most of ZUSO’s music, and “Hold Me” has both of those things in spades.

“‘Hold Me’ is a smooth breath of fresh air. It’s very cool being able to combine this dnb type sound with my own kind of style and textures. I wrote the beat quite quickly and then I found the vocal sample in this sample-pack that I remembered using ages ago for one of the first ever demos I made. It just had such a nice chilled and gentle vibe which I really loved. I wanted the song to give off this wholesome calming energy and the ‘Hold Me’ vocal fits that tone perfectly.

It definitely has the escapism feel to it as well, which is a common theme I base a lot of my music off. I then added some nice emotionally driven chords and pads along with a nice guitar riff just to add to that feeling, and yea hopefully it’s something you can all relate to and enjoy.” ~ ZUSO

Adventure Club and Codeko Yearn for Love Lost in New Collaboration, "Feels Like You"

Adventure Club and Codeko will have you crying and calling your ex in the club.

In the midst of their “Heroes and Villians” tour, the influential melodic bass duo teamed up with Codeko for a new collaboration on Insomniac’s Lost In Dreams Records. Titled “Feels Like You,” today’s new release is the follow-up to the trio’s 2021 collaboration “Never Surrender” with Sarah de Warren.

In contrast to their last collab, “Feels Like You” is more suited for a late-night drive through the city than the main stage of a music festival. The song’s wistful vocals tell the story of someone longing for a person from their past as introspective production kicks off its arrangement.

As “Feels Like You” progresses, the soft-spoken vox turn to cries as Adventure Club and Codeko build up to a melodic breakdown that channels that internal anguish of missing someone who isn’t coming back.

You can listen to “Feels Like You” below and stream the new collaboration here.

LE SSERAFIM drop ‘Perfect Night’ MV, featuring ‘Overwatch 2’ characters

LE SSERAFIM have drooped their first English-language single, ‘Perfect Night’, in collaboration with video game Overwatch 2.

The new video for ‘Perfect Night’ follows two simultaneous storylines: one features LE SSERAFIM practicing for an upcoming concert, while the other following characters from Overwatch 2 trying to make it in time for the girl group’s show.

“I got all I need / You know, nothin’ else can beat / The way that I feel when I’m dancin’ with my girls / Perfect energy, yeah, we flawless, yeah, we free / There’s no better feelin’ in the whole wide world,” the girl group sing on the chorus of ‘Perfect Night’.

According to a previously announcement on Weverse, the track “sends an energetic message that even a not-so-perfect day can be fun when you spend it with your crew”.

Aside from ‘Perfect Night’, LE SSERAFIM’s collaboration with Overwatch 2 will also feature a new game mode inspired by the girl group, as well as exclusive in-game items and Legendary hero skins. More details here.

‘Perfect Night’ follows the girl group’s first studio album, ‘Unforgiven’, which was released earlier this year. The record saw them work with disco legend Nile Rodgers on the title track.

“It just doesn’t feel real that we were given such an amazing opportunity,” singer Yunjin told NME of the collaboration, which was Rodgers’ first foray into the world of K-pop.

Meanwhile, the five-piece kicked off their first tour, ‘Flame Rises’, this summer, performing across Asia. “Theatrics are what truly drive the ‘Flame Rises’ tour,” NME wrote of the Osaka stop in a four-star review.

Meanwhile, member Yunjin shared her latest solo track, ‘blessing in disguise’, in August. The song is the singer’s fourth self-composed solo release and details her journey of moving to South Korea and becoming an idol.

Lucy Rose shares first new single in four years, ‘Could You Help Me’

Lucy Rose has shared her first new single in four years, ‘Could You Help Me’, and announced an intimate show in London.

Picking up from her 2019 LP ‘No Words Left‘, Rose’s latest single is a jazz-pop fusion that discusses parenthood and new challenges within its lyrics.

Speaking of the track in a press release, the singer said: “After having my son Otis, I started to suffer from severe back pain that made living my day-to-day life almost impossible. I sought medical help but was dismissed repeatedly.”

Rose continued: “I put those emotions and exasperation into ‘Could You Help Me’. Although my back prevented me from being able to pick up a guitar, I was able to sit at the piano and play for a few minutes at a time. With Otis patiently listening, I think the music really helped lift me. I’d been listening to a lot of different music; Erroll Garner, Duke Ellington, Kiefer, Debussy, Little Simz, and finding myself drawn so much more to writing at a piano.”

Along with the release of her new track, Rose has also announced the details for her one-off intimate show at London’s Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

The show will mark Rose’s return to London since her sold-out show at the Barbican back in December 2019. Tickets will go on general sale on Monday, October 30 at 10am local time. Visit here for tickets.

In a three-star review of her 2019 LP ‘No Words Left’, NME shared: “Lyrically, this is the best Rose has ever been. Poignant, affecting and candid, at times it’s spectacular. Yet the music fails to reach the same heights, resulting in a mismatched record. Sometimes excellent, sometimes uninvitingly dreary, ‘No Words Left’ is an ordinary album from a musician who could be truly extraordinary.

Elsewhere, Rose previously released two standalone songs — ‘Question It All’ and ‘White Car’ – which were recorded at the end of 2019.

The two tracks were initially meant to be released in December to tie in with her show at the Barbican in London.

“But at the time something didn’t feel quite right about releasing them,” Rose revealed in a statement. “I was still very much in the ‘No Words Left’ mindset and I worried that the songs lyrically didn’t spell out exactly how I was feeling; they were more vague, almost disguising my feelings, that meant they weren’t good.

Wrapping up a strong 2023, the surging Topanga Hills Mafia trio have returned with their latest single, “CREIZY.”

A dynamic fusion of hip-hop, dance and Latin music, the track was brought to life by virtue of a stellar collaboration with Happy Colors, Andrekza and the genre-defying Bok Nero. Bulldozing the boundaries of each genre, “CREIZY” is a standout release for all of its creators.

The track is as explosive as it is vibrant, with the Latin-inspired beats of Happy Colors, the enigmatic charm of Andrekza and the charismatic bars of Nero blending into a sultry latticework. “Gaming has been an important part of my life ever since my earliest memories. I wanted to partner with SCUF specifically because when you need to do a drop shot or move your hand off the controller, you’re at a disadvantage if you are not using a SCUF controller,” said lead singer M. Shadows in a press release.

“It was just essential to us if we were going to compete at the highest level. Thank you CORSAIR, SCUF, Elgato, and ORIGIN for the amazing setup you did in my gaming room, and I can’t wait to put it to use.

“Stoked that our fans will get to have their very own SCUF controller featuring the ‘LIBAD’ x Wes Lang artwork.”

Earlier this year, M. Shadows admitted that the deepfake AI “hack” that announced that the band’s intended to cancel its festival appearances was his idea.

Despite denying any knowledge about it, his plan was to ensure that the deepfake appeared as “authentic as possible” to “make an overarching comment on society and where it’s going”.

In other gaming news, a secret Chase & Status gig will be held in London on November 9, with Call Of Duty fans competing for tickets through the completion of confidential missions.

Big Changes to Spotify's Royalty Model Include Streaming Minimum Before Artists Get Paid

Spotify is reportedly planning to implement a new royalty model that would require songs to reach a minimum number of streams before triggering a payout.

According to a report by Music Business Worldwide, significant changes to the streaming giant’s royalty blueprint are coming in early 2024. The most controversial of those would establish a streaming threshold which artists must hit before they get paid anything.

A song would need to earn roughly five cents per month—or about 200 streams—in order to generate payments, per MBW. The tracks that don’t reach that ceiling? Their marginal royalty slices will redirect to Spotify’s “streamshare” pool, which would then be administered to the platform’s more popular artists. The totality of that music amounts to tens of millions in annual royalties, one source said.

The move is expected to “de-monetize a portion of tracks that previously absorbed 0.5% of the service’s royalty pool.” In other words, Spotify wants to reroute these fractional payments, which rarely end up in independent artists’ pockets anyway because aggregators typically require a minimum amount of streams before allowing them to withdraw money.

Spotify is already in conversation with major record labels and music distributors, who will likely green-light the revamped royalty infrastructure, according to Billboard. That news arrives after Universal Music Group’s Q2 earnings call in July, when CEO Lucian Grange announced a “newly expanded agreement” with Spotify that he claimed will benefit “real artists with real fanbases.”

Other high-profile indie artists and watchdog groups aren’t so sure.

“Artists have solutions to fix streaming but Spotify isn’t listening,” the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers said in a statement shared on social media. “Instead they propose changes that will enrich the top of the pyramid even more, and make it even more impossible for working musicians to benefit from streaming.”

Spotify also reportedly has plans to instate changes to combat streaming fraud. Distributors whose songs are flagged for fraudulent activity will be subject to financial penalties, per MBW, who specifically mentioned white noise and nature sounds. These nebulous releases will now require longer play times to generate royalties.

It’s important to note that Spotify has not yet publicly confirmed these changes.

“We’re always evaluating how we can best serve artists, and regularly discuss with partners ways to further platform integrity,” a Spotify spokesperson said. “We do not have any news to share at this time.”

It’s certainly not the first time changes to Spotify’s business model have come under fire. The company’s controversial “Discovery Mode” feature, which offered some artists and labels the chance to boost their playlisting exposure in exchange for a reduced royalty rate, was pervasively condemned in 2021. Members of the United States Congress ultimately lambasted the feature in an open letter to Spotify’s co-founder and CEO, Daniel Ek.

Ek has not yet commented on the reported changes to Spotify’s royalty model at the time of writing.
