Claude VonStroke's New Single Will Give You "The Creeps" for Halloween

“Are the horrors real or all in your head?” asks Claude VonStroke.

Many artists get ready for Halloween by sprinkling the Stranger Things or X-Files themes into their sets and calling it a day. This was not the case for the Dirtybird boss, who set out to create something that’s both danceable and genuinely unnerving.

That brings us to today’s release of “The Creeps,” VonStroke’s new track, which tells the story of someone who consumes a substance that makes him unable to tell if he’s really in a horror movie or not. The song is narrated by a creepy, haunting figure that lurks beneath its bassline. With each whisper, he turns up the paranoia as he creates a chilling atmosphere through long, dramatic pauses and whining synths that surprise with the fraught excitement of a jump-scare.

In addition to VonStroke’s original, a pair of remixes also released on his Dirtybird label today. Steve Darko transformed track’s minimal sounds with an acid-infused remix that brings in some slimy textures to the unsettling single. Mike Kerrigan, on the other hand, utilized echoing whispers and driving keys to build up to a sawing breakdown that gives extra space to dance for those who can’t handle the scares of the original.

Take a listen to “The Creeps” and its accompanying remixes below.

First-Ever "Sleep Rave" Lulls Amsterdam Into a Slumber for Neuroscience Research

In a dark chapel in Amsterdam, a surreal fusion of beats and beds culminated in a first-of-its-kind event dubbed the “Sleep Rave.”

30 attendees, who found themselves nestled in comfy beds and surrounded by the gentle glow of purple lights, were treated to a woozy eight-hour DJ set by Dutch electronic music duo Mr. Belt & Wezol.

In partnership with tech giant Samsung, the event at Hotel Arena was designed to discover how the attendees’ state of rest was impacted by the flow of certain sounds. Participants had their rest tracked via the company’s Galaxy Watch 6 wearable tech.

The “Sleep Rave” served as a precursor to the more energetic Amsterdam Dance Event, setting a serene environment complete with lavender mocktails. Conversations centered around sleep, shedding light on our nocturnal habits and the tech that tracks them.

The event also included helpful discourse led by Dr. Els van der Helm, an acclaimed neuroscientist and sleep expert who has consulted with Spotify on the subject, among other high-profile brands.

Meanwhile, as Dutch Cowboys reports, Mr. Belt & Wezol described their set as “Dory-fied music,” as if to describe it as Ellen DeGeneres’ floaty and whimsical character from Finding Nemo. Following the experiment, warbling bird calls nudged the ravers awake as organizers allowed them a peek at their sleep data harvested by the smartwatch.

Dr. van der Helm remarked on the prominent role music plays in the sleep rituals of Gen-Z and Millennials in the Netherlands, illuminating the potential for an alliance between electronic music and sleep science. On October 29th, he and Mr. Belt & Wezol will release an optimized 90-minute set for sleep based around the findings of the Amsterdam study.

“With this ‘Sleep Rave,’ Samsung wants to make people aware of the importance of sleep and show how the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 can help gain insight into sleep patterns,” said Carlijn Prins, Digital Marketing Communication Specialist at Samsung Electronics. “Based on these insights, people can work more specifically on their health, both during the day and at night.”

Headliners Share Their Favorite Scary Movies Ahead of Escape Halloween

Escape Halloween is only a week away. North America’s largest Halloween festival returns to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino October 27-28. Select tickets are still available.

Insomniac has also teamed up with Grand Central Night Market for a special screening of Scream (1996) at the Million Dollar Theater on October 24. RSVPs have sold out, but you can still secure a ticket at the screening, all while enjoying all of the plentiful food the Market has to offer.

To help you get in the Halloween spirit, we wanted to share a select handful of artists’ on the Escape lineup’s favorite scary movie. From some more lighthearted fare to some of the freakiest films of all time, check out what some of Escape’s top artists enjoy for spooky season.

Kaivon
Movie: Midsommar

“Midsommar is my favorite scary movie of all time. The movie made me feel feelings that were so deep and mysterious. It doesn’t compare to any other movie I’ve ever seen.”

TOBEHONEST
Movie: The Hills Have Eyes

“My favorite scary movie is The Hills Have Eyes. The reason this one resonated with me so much is because I grew up in the desert, and I would go on camping trips in the winter with my family. When we went out, it was usually in the middle of nowhere, like the setting for this movie. A lot of the time, the places we chose had abandoned towns next to them, like Jerome, Arizona. I always viewed these trips as peaceful because you could see the stars so clearly at night. I couldn’t imagine having my childhood trips turn the way the movie did. Plus, the characters in this movie are so great to watch. They did a really great job with the villains and their makeup.”

Codeko
Movie: Saw

“I was 12, after school at my friend’s house, and his older brother showed us a youtube compilation of “saw” traps to try and scare us. We obviously pretended we were all grown up and it didn’t bother us (spoiler it did), and the three of us ended up watching Saw 2 to prove it. His parents came back and found us, we all got in trouble (I also had nightmares for weeks afterwards). But I’ve watched it again since; I think it’s a weird type of nostalgia but I actually really enjoyed it”

Rossy
Movie: It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

“I actually am too jumpy for most horror movies, so for Halloween I like to stick to some more light-hearted classics. Linus getting scared in the pumpkin patch is about as scary as I want to go. No SAW for me.”

Yetep
Movie: The Grudge

“The Grudge completely traumatized my childhood and I stopped watching any scary movies for a while. I remember being so scared that I was afraid of taking showers because of the scene where the girls get her hair grabbed mid-shower. I also remember seeing The Grudge girl a couple of times during my sleep paralysis, so it’s been haunting me ever since.”

Mariana BO
Movie: IT

“I don’t usually watch horror movies, but this is one of the ones that I find the most terrifying. I’ve always been unnerved by clowns, making this film especially frightening. As a child, it was so scary that I couldn’t even bear to watch it!”

Hekler
Movie: Scream

“I really love the Scream movies from the slasher franchise! I watch them all throughout the year with my girlfriend. It’s like a thing we do together. They have the ability to keep us on the edge of our seats everytime we watch them. For me, it’s all about the message hidden in plain sight and the unique cinematography in the films that keep me coming back and if I am being honest also bleeds into how I try to make music. This last one was sooooo good!”

See you at the Psycho Circus this weekend! Daily lineups and official Escape 2023 trailer are below.

MTV Music Awards called off due to “volatility of world events” as Israel-Hamas conflict continues

This year’s MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony have been called off due to “the volatility of world events” relating to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

It was due to take place in Paris at the Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition centre on November 5 and nominees included Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Olivia Rodrigo.

Earlier this month (October 7), Hamas launched an early morning attack on southern Israel that has gone on to trigger an Israel-Hamas war.

In a statement announcing the decision, a spokesperson for Paramount, who own MTV, said: “Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.

“The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning.”

While the ceremony has been cancelled, voting will continue and winners will still receive their awards. Organisers say they plan to return in November 2024.

Swift led the nominations with a total of seven nods, including ‘Best Artist’, ‘Best Song’ (‘Anti-Hero’) and ‘Best Video’ (‘Anti-Hero’).

Rodrigo and SZA followed closely behind, having earned six nominations apiece. Both acts appear in the ‘Best Artist’, ‘Best Song’, ‘Best Video’ and ‘Best US Act’ categories. Rodrigo is also up for ‘Best Pop’ and ‘Biggest Fans’, with SZA in the running for ‘Best R&B’ and ‘Best Live’.

Elsewhere, Doja Cat, Måneskin, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj each received four nods.

The ‘Best Rock’ category featured Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Måneskin, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Killers, while ‘Best Alternative’ list included Blur, Fall Out Boy, Lana Del Rey, Paramore, Thirty Seconds To Mars and Yungblud.

Fans can still vote for their favourites across categories including ‘Best Song’, ‘Best Artist’, ‘Best Collaboration’ and ‘Best Afrobeats’ at the official MTV EMA website until October 31, at 10:59pm GMT.

Graham Nash sells back catalogue to Irving Azoff’s Iconic Artists Group

Graham Nash has sold the rights to his back catalogue to Irving Azoff’s Iconic Artists Group.

  • READ MORE: David Crosby: “Making music is crucial – and it’s keeping me alive”

The deal includes songs from his solo career, as well as his time in The Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Azoff told Variety: “I am thrilled to welcome Graham Nash to the iconic family, which now represents the works of all three of Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

“Graham is not only an incredible talent and true gentleman but a longtime friend as well. Back when I struck out on my own and started my first management company, Graham visited my office and came up with the name, ‘Front Line Management.’”

While Nash said: “I’m looking forward to working with the Iconic team on various projects to further the legacy of CSN’s music and my own.”

Jimmy Edwards, the president of the Iconic Artists group, added: “We’re excited to be working with Graham. We’ll be looking to shed light on all aspects of his incredible career, including premium reissues, placement of music in film and TV, partnerships, and utilising innovative digital strategies to tell Graham’s incredible story to new generations.”

Edwards also hinted that unreleased music from Nash’s solo work as well his time in Crosby, Stills and Nash could be released in the future.

He continued: “Without giving too much away, I will say there is a wealth of material in both Graham’s vault and the CSN archives that I’m incredibly excited about and fans will be too. Stay tuned.”

Earlier this year, Nash opened up about his relationship with former band member David Crosby. Speaking to AARP, Nash paid tribute to his former collaborator who died in January of this year.

He told the outlet: “The fact is that we were getting a little closer at the end. He had sent me a voicemail saying that he wanted to talk to apologise, and could we set up a time to talk,” he said. “I emailed him back and said, ‘Okay, call me at eleven o’clock tomorrow your time, which is two o’clock on the East Coast.’ He never called, and then he was gone.”

Nash shared a heartfelt tribute to Crosby shortly after his passing. “I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years,” he wrote.

“David was fearless in life and in music. He leaves behind a tremendous void as far as sheer personality and talent in this world. He spoke his mind, his heart, and his passion through his beautiful music and leaves an incredible legacy. These are the things that matter most. My heart is truly with his wife, Jan, his son, Django, and all of the people he has touched in this world.”

James Bay to play gig fundraising for food banks at London’s Lafayette

James Bay will play a fundraising gig in London next month to help raise money for food banks.

  • READ MORE: James Bay – ‘Leap’ review: self-assured songs about satisfaction

Bay is teaming up with food bank donation platform Bankuet to raise money for those using food banks this winter. He will open up their Christmas 2023 #GiveFoodGiveJoy appeal by playing a gig at London’s Lafayette in King’s Cross on November 7.

Tickets for the show will go on sale on October 18 to those on the James Bay and the Bankuet mailing lists here. Any remaining tickets will go on general on sale on October 20 here.

In a statement, James Bay said: “I’m joining forces with Bankuet to help feed not only the growing number of people who are having to rely on food banks but those on low incomes faced with the choice of heating or eating this winter.

“Despite the UK being the sixth richest country in the world, millions are struggling to access the food and personal items they need and are turning to food banks for support with Christmas presents this year. As a new dad, I cannot imagine what it feels like to be in that position, and I just wanted to do something to try and help.”

Back in August, Bay shared a new single called ‘Goodbye Never Felt So Bad’. The anthemic track marks the first material from the singer-songwriter since his third album ‘Leap’, which was released in 2022.

“‘Goodbye Never Felt So Bad’ is a song about how crazy it can feel to say goodbye,” Bay explained in a statement.

“There’s rarely ever anything good about it. I say goodbye to the people I love constantly; it comes with the territory of my work. I’m always travelling. It’s an amazing job but everything in life has its upsides and downsides.”

A new single, ‘All My Broken Pieces‘ was released earlier this month.

Back in February, Bay revealed that he had started working on a new album which he hoped would “showcase his guitar playing”.
