Thy Art Is Murder’s new vocalist shares first message since joining band

Thy Art Is Murder have shared their new vocalist’s first message since their split with previous frontman Chris ‘CJ’ McMahon.

The band announced they were severing ties with McMahon last September, a week after their album ‘Godlike’ was released. In a statement, Thy Art Is Murder cited “a breakdown in his character and judgement”. The Australian deathcore band also said they had re-recorded the album to replace McMahon’s vocals.

McMahon recently came under fire for making anti-trans remarks, and apologised on the group’s channel. The band also alleged McMahon threatened to “destroy Thy Art Is Murder from the inside if we did not capitulate to various ideologies that [McMahon] holds”.

In a video posted to social media on October 4, the band introduced Tyler Miller as their new vocalist. Miller is also a vocalist for Aversions Crown.

“I’m sure all of you are wondering who the fuck I am,” he said in the social media video.

“My name is Tyler Miller. Some of you may know who I am, some of you may not, and if not that’s totally fine. It’s been kind of a crazy situation. One minute, I’m doing nothing in my house, and the next minute I’m getting a text, and now I’m here.” Miller went on to call touring with the band so far “super heavy” and “super fun”.

TAIM will be playing in the UK later this month – to see live, find all dates below. You can buy tickets for the events here.

Thy Art Is Murder’s UK tour dates are:

October
22 – London O2 Forum Kentish Town
23 – Manchester O2 Ritz
24 – Birmingham O2 Institute
25 – Glasgow SWG3
26 – Bristol SWX

The chart-topping producers are now poised to bring the bespoke “Under Construction” production to Hollywood Boulevard for the show’s most ambitious concert yet.

“From the beginning, one of our main goals has been to foster community building in and outside of our events,” said Framework owner Kobi Danan. “This is why we are honored to have been granted the privilege by the Hollywood community board, local and city officials, and the surrounding businesses to host an event of this magnitude in our backyard.”

Various local businesses will remain open during the show, including the swanky Bourbon Room, which overlooks the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“Hollywood is our home—we could not imagine any other location to host an event of this caliber—and we hope that through this unprecedented occasion we can continue to further reinvigorate Hollywood as more than just a tourist destination, but a destination for our communities to come together for an evening, and many more to come, that they will never forget,” Danan continued.

The Killers’ ‘Mr Brightside’ is UK’s most streamed song in Spotify history

The Killers‘ ‘Mr Brightside’ has been revealed as the UK’s most streamed song in Spotify history.

To celebrate the app’s 15th anniversary, Music Week reported that Spotify have made a list of the biggest artists and tracks since its launch in October 2008. ‘Mr Brightside’ (released September 29, 2003) has over 1.8 billion streams globally as of October 9, 2023. Spotify did not release the number of UK-only streams.

‘Mr Brightside’ previously broke UK chart records in 2021 by spending 260 non-consecutive weeks in the Top 100 of the UK’s singles chart. As of October 10, that figure has risen to a whopping 382 weeks – nearly seven years.

It was released as the lead single to The Killers’ debut album ‘Hot Fuss‘, and only reached number ten as its highest chart position. But thanks to its unusually dedicated legacy, ‘Mr Brightside’ has enjoyed consistent consumption rates that have contributed to its astonishing streaming numbers.

Other top streamed tracks included Vance Joy‘s ‘Riptide’ at number six and Arctic Monkeys‘ ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ at number 7.

Spotify also unveiled the most streamed UK artists globally on Spotify over the last 15 years. Ed Sheeran took the crown as the most streamed male artist. His song ‘Shape of You’ was revealed to be the most streamed UK track globally (3.6 billion streams as of October 11).

Meanwhile, Dua Lipa reigned as the most streamed female artist. Her hits ‘Don’t Start Now’ and ‘New Rules’ were also found in the Top 15 tracks made by UK artists of all time on the platform.

Flowers has previously said he didn’t think ‘Mr Brightside’ would become a hit if released today, citing changes in the music industry. NME writer Mark Beaumont also spoke to The Killers recently about how they wrote the sleeper hit in lead guitarist Dave Keuning’s closet.

In other news, The Killers released a new standalone single last August, ‘Your Side Of Town’. Though the band told NME in 2022 that they were set to release an album soon, Flowers revealed in a recent interview that he had scrapped the record: “Halfway through recording I realised, ‘I can’t do this,’” Flowers said, adding: “This isn’t the kind of record… I think this will be the… I don’t think you’ll see us making this type of music any more.”

He added: “This is the crisis I’m in. The Killers are my identity and our songs fill the seats, but I’m more fulfilled making music like [2021 album] ‘Pressure Machine’.

Alameda City Officials Backpedal on Request to Shut Down Portola Music Festival

After calling for the cessation of Portola Music Festival, Alameda city officials have met with the event’s organizers to allay concerns about its sound dispersion, The San Francisco Standard reports.

Portola debuted in the Bay Area last year before returning to Pier 80 on September 30th and October 1st with Skrillex, Carl Cox, Eric Prydz and many other electronic superstars. The noise at that time had precipitated a spate of complaints from nearby Alameda residents, who urged Portola promoter Goldenvoice to address it ahead of the 2023 fest.

However, history apparently repeated itself, leading to a bitter post on the City of Alameda’s Facebook page with a formal request for the San Francisco Entertainment Commission to discontinue Portola. That’s despite a registered maximum decibel level of 61.4 in Alameda during the festival, substantially below the city’s noise ordinance of 70 decibels, per The Standard.

Portola’s compliance notwithstanding, the Commission ultimately agreed on conciliatory measures to work with the festival’s organizers and explore ways to mitigate its sound.

“I think we turned the conversation around,” said Maggie Weiland, Executive Director of the San Francisco Entertainment Commission. “There will be more outreach and Alameda will get updates on the plan.”

“Our staff will continue to work in partnership with festival organizers and the San Francisco Entertainment Commission to understand what happened and what additional steps can be taken to mitigate this ambient sound in the future,” added a spokesperson for the City of Alameda.

Portola organizers have not yet announced dates for the festival’s return in 2024.

Sentinel complete three-part debut EP on Tomorrowland Music, ‘Eyes On You’ – Dancing Astronaut

2023 has been nothing short of a career-defining calendar thus far for Sentinel. Between a matchup with the STMPD RCRDS head on “Hurricane” and a Tomorrowland weekend one appearance, one of Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2023 have only added to that run with a string of solo singles since early July. And Sentinel have now completed their three-sided debut EP, returning to Tomorrowland Music to place the finishing Eyes On You piece, “Hallucinate.”

The Aussie brothers’ first-ever EP is an open and shut case of their range and production maturity, stepping beyond the progressive house nature from their previous pair of collaborations. And that’d already been explored on the EP’s club-driven title track, succeeded by their Ultra ID-turned-second Eyes On You single, “Get That Love.” And Sentinel’s EP path reaches its final stop with a hypnotic, acid-tinged cut, “Hallucinate.” Even with a couple of months still left in 2023, Sentinel have already gone far and above to reaffirm their artist to watch denomination that’s guaranteed to continue into 2024. Stream their Eyes On You EP below.

Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry shares new single ‘Shame’

Lauren Mayberry has shared her second solo single ‘Shame’.

The track, which she recently performed live during her solo show in London on Monday (October 9), follows her previous single ‘Are You Awake?’.

The Chvrches’ frontwoman first teased the track, which had been previewed at shows on Mayberry’s recent North American headline tour, last week. You can listen to it below.

“I had the idea for a while of a song that had the tagline of ‘what a shame’, but in a sarcastic way. And the word ‘shame’ having a double meaning – the shame you feel and internalise, but what a shame you feel like that and can’t change it,” Mayberry said of the single in a statement via Rolling Stone.

She added: “Looking back on a lot of my life in terms of relationships, sexuality and my sense of self in the world, there is a lot of shame associated with that. I came into my teens in the early-mid 2000s, a time period we now regard as a bit of a shithole in terms of gender and media messages (post–Woodstock 99, the dawn of sex tape leaks, Girls Gone Wild, etc. etc).

“What was deemed ‘attractive’ for women and girls was quite disturbing in hindsight, and that’s what went into my brain at a formative time, romanticising bargain basement, local band boy versions of Reality Bites Ethan Hawke. But now I know better, my wiring is still to find those things attractive on a cellular level. I know not to want those things academically, but emotionally, romantically, sexually, I have been trained to find those things valuable and attractive. I know you are what you eat and it’s the taste that keeps me tame.”

Explaining her inspiration across her upcoming debut solo album, the singer recently revealed to NME how she was looking to make sense of the “isolating” experience of being a woman in a male-dominated music industry.

“I was 23 when Chvrches started, and from minute one it felt like all anyone wanted to talk about was my gender,” she said. “A lot of the narrative was around what I looked like, what the guys didn’t look like and how that fit into the context. It felt odd, and it gives you quite a strange psychological separation from your physical self.

“Everyone was having this conversation about me, at me, and I wasn’t really involved in it. If you spend most of your formative years in those environments, how do you psychologically stitch that back together to have a more connected experience with yourself, your life and your writing?”

Reviewing her show at KOKO earlier this week, NME gave Mayberry four stars and said the performance was “a thrilling intro to her main character moment”.

Meanwhile, Mayberry will kick off her European tour in Amsterdam tonight (October 11).

Her remaining tour dates are below. Visit here for EU tickets.
