Drake hits back at “weirdos” questioning Millie Bobby Brown relationship

Drake has hit back at those who threw his platonic relationship with Millie Bobby Brown into question over recent years, labelling them as “weirdos”.

The 36-year-old called out those who have had lingering questions about his friendship with the Stranger Things and Enola Holmes actor with the lyrics to his new track ‘Another Late Night’.

Taken from his new album ‘For All The Dogs’ and starring Lil Yachty, Drake doesn’t hold back when it comes to shedding light on the friendship between the two.

My bank account is magnolia / Milly rockin’ /Weirdos in my comments talkin’ ’bout some Millie Bobby, look,” he raps in the track. “Bring them jokes up to the gang, we get to really flockin’ / Or send a finger to your mama in some FedEx boxes / Open up that shit, it’s jaw droppin’ / really shockin’ / I ain’t pretty flacko, bitch, this shit get really rocky.

The criticism of their friendship started back in 2017, when Brown met the Canadian musician before he performed in Brisbane, Australia as part of his Boy Meets World tour.

Hanging out backstage, they each posted their own Instagram photos from the meet-and-greet, which saw the then-14-year-old actor and the then-31-year-old rapper stand side by side recreating Eleven’s signature power move – hand out, fingers outstretched.

The following year, the friendship led to further critique when the teenage actor told the media that they communicate frequently by text, and that she saw him as a “great role model” who gave her relationship advice.

“We just texted each other the other day, and he was like, ‘I miss you so much,’ and I was like, ‘I miss you more,’” she said on the 2018 Emmys red carpet. She added that Drake gives her advice “About boys,” saying: “He helps me… He’s great. He’s wonderful. I love him.”

Following the backlash, Brown took to her Instagram Stories to speak out about the reaction. “Why u gotta make a lovey friendship ur headline? U guys are weird… for real,” she wrote.

“I’m lucky to have people in the business extend their time to help me further my career and offer their wisdom and guidance. I’m very blessed to have amazing people in my life. U don’t get to choose that for me. It’s nice to have people who understand what I do. Now get back to talking about real problems in this world other than my friendships… jeez.”

Later that year, she also praised his Brisbane gig as “probably the best live performance I’ve ever seen” in an interview, and once again defended their friendship by adding that he was “just a great person.”

In other Drake news, last week the rapper issued a response to podcast host Joe Budden after the latter criticised his new album.

“He rappin’ for the children. Yo dog, I had to look up how old this n***a was when I finished listening to the album,” Budden said. “You are 36. Your birthday is in 20 days. I Googled that, too. You’re going to be 37 years old. Get the f**k away from some of these younger n***as.”

Drake fired back over the weekend (October 7), sharing a lengthy Instagram comment reading: “You have failed at music”.

“You switched careers cause the things that pop into your brain had you broke living cheque to cheque and the raps you write had 450 men showing up to your shows in dusty Enyce jeans to screw up their face to Mood Muzik 29 and pretend you are the goat,” he added. “If you need it put in simpler terms I own a 767…he owns a modest house in the 973 and flies first class on special occasions.”

Elsewhere, the rapper also announced that he was taking a hiatus from music, stating: “I need to focus on my health, first and foremost – and I’ll talk about that soon enough.”

Pooping Unicorn toymaker settles Black Eyed Peas’ ‘My Humps’ parody lawsuit

The makers behind a pooping unicorn toy have settled in a case with Black Eyed Peas over a ‘My Humps’ parody.

In January this year, Black Eyed Peas’ music publisher BMG Rights Management took legal action against MGA (the company behind Bratz) over alleged similarities between their 2005 track and one sung by the Poopsie Slime Surprise: Dancing Unicorn toy.

According to the lawsuit, the toys sing a song called ‘My Poops’ at the push of its heart-shaped bellybutton. However, the track allegedly ripped off the rap group’s 2005 hit, ‘My Humps’.

Now, the two parties have reportedly reached “a settlement in principle” to resolve the lawsuit, according to Billboard.

In the original complaint made in January, BMG said that, in additional to copying musical elements, the unicorn song featured a lead vocalist who “sounds very similar” to Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie.

My poops, my poops my poops my poops. Whatcha gonna do with all that poop, all that poop,” sings the toy.

I drive my parents crazy, I do it every day,” it continues. On ‘My Humps’, Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie sings “I drive these brothers crazy, I do it on the daily.”

“Music, especially a hit song such as ‘My Humps,’ adds great value when incorporated into a product or used in a video advertisement, because it increases consumer recognizability, consumer engagement and attention to the product,” BMG wrote in the lawsuit. “The infringing work is so substantially similar to ‘My Humps’ that it is obvious that the infringing work was intentionally copied.”

Other recent high profile copyright cases have seen artists including Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd and Taylor Swift involved in their own legal disputes.

Elsewhere, last year Will.i.am told NME that he was working on a new Black Eye Peas album. ”We’ve been working on it actively for the past months and keep recording while on the road,” he said.

In July he teamed up with Britney Spears on their new song ‘Mind Your Business’.

Incubus and Lizzo team up for ‘Aqueous Transmission’

This past weekend (October 6), Incubus staged a special concert at the Hollywood Bowl during which they performed their seminal 2001 album ‘Morning View’ in its entirety.

  • READ MORE: Incubus’ Brandon Boyd talks 20 years of ‘Morning View’: “We wanted to change our environment dramatically”

During the show, Incubus brought out pop star Lizzo to perform ‘Aqueous Transmission’ off the record, for which she provided support on the flute. Watch the moment below.

Elsewhere during their performance of ‘Morning View’, Incubus played old songs like ‘Blood on the Ground’, ‘Have You Ever’, and ‘Under My Umbrella’ for the first time in a decade. They also incorporated fan favourites like ‘Anna Molly’, ‘Pardon Me’, ‘Dig’ and ‘Drive’ in their 21-song setlist.

Incubus spoke to NME about ‘Morning View’ for its 20th anniversary back in 2021. Speaking on the initial decision to record the album in the house on Morning View Drive in Malibu, frontman Brandon Boyd told NME that the band, who were used to recording in “windless padded rooms,” wanted to be free from distractions during the recording process.

“We made the decision to not make our next album in a traditional setting so we rented this big, empty house up in Malibu kind of away from everything,” said Boyd. “We were interested in seeing what would happen if we changed our environment dramatically and set up in a living room together and brought out all of our gear into this house, where it was as distraction free as you could possibly be in that moment.”

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the band went back to the Malibu beach house where it was written and recorded for a livestream concert of the record performed in its entirety.

In August, Lizzo was hit with a lawsuit for bullying and harassment by numerous members of her Big Grrrls dance group. Designer Asha Daniels later filed another suit claiming that the Grammy Award-winner’s employees were forced to work in a “racist and sexualised” environment.

Lizzo has denied the allegations, labelling them “outrageous”. Last week, she asked the presiding judge to throw out the “false” case against her, adding that it’s “disappointing” to see her character “criticised” in such a way.

Her lawyer also said they “intend to sue for malicious prosecution after she prevails and these specious claims are dismissed”. He also added: “The lawsuit is a sham.”

Matt Barri Offers Stunning Debut EP ‘The Only Way Out Is Up’ + Interview

When we were coming up with the list for our Artists To Watch in 2023, Matt Barri was the first name that we added. Though he didn’t end up as the featured artist for the list this year, his unique sound, landing somewhere between emo, electronic, and euphoria, built up immense anticipation for his newly released debut EP, ‘The Only Way Out Is Up‘.

Barri is a genius with both the pen, the production, and the mic, with an amazing ability to deeply immersed with every word he sings and note he plays. The title track is a perfect example of his wildly creative production capabilities, and the following tune “Everything To Me” keeps you glued to your seat with an ethereal presence- and just when you think it’s over, Barri offer a booming, anthemic climax of synths and vocals.

You Are Here” indulges rich, bouncy future bass paired with Porter Robinson-esque vocal chops that invoke a sense of bliss and nostalgia. “I’m In Space While You’re Worlds Apart” feels like something Tom Delonge would have brought his Angels & Airwaves project. That pop-punk/electronic vibe is beautifully executed by Barri with thundering drums and a vibrant, unforgettable drop.

Orbiter” closes out the EP in a futuristic fashion, basking us one last time in his orbit before the song comes to a bittersweet end. It’s safe to say Matt Barri has a bright future ahead and we’re thrilled to be joining along for the ride.

Check out the album below along with our exclusive interview with Matt Barri!

Your debut EP, “The Only Way Out Is Up,” has been released track-by-track over the course of the year. Can you tell us more about the creative process behind this unique release strategy and how it has shaped the reception of your music?

Coming out of the Covid lockdown and shortly after graduating ICON, I produced a bunch of new music.  Some of it was future bass inspired some electro House some was more drum and Bass, as well as a few collaborations with some friends.  We ultimately  released five songs in 2022.  We are getting a lot of great feedback from various people in the industry, and the overwhelming response was if we wanted to break through, we should focus on one genre.

I had over a dozen songs that were more focused on what I wanted the Matt Barri sound to be.   We made the decision to release two separate Electro Pop EP’s that would feature my topline and vocals. We derived a release plan for the first EP that would start on valentines day releasing the next song every 6 weeks or so. We would see how they would do one at a time and really try to work the releases. The first release “Everything To Me” did so well that we delayed the release of the second track by two months  as not to cannibalize our efforts . We essentially went with this type of release strategy for the whole EP and are now ready to tie a bow around the project, sort of speak by releasing this last track.

I’m excited for people to hear the project as a whole as it tells a the story of my personal journey over the last few years. The responses been overwhelmingly positive. Our plan is to release the second EP the same way we did the first starting at the beginning of next year. Between now and then I have a few other releases,re-mixes and collaborations that will be coming out.

Your musical style combines elements of EDM and emo-inspired top lines and vocals. Can you share more about the evolution of your sound and how it has developed over the years?

I first started making electro house and progressive house. When I started releasing music on Soundcloud, it was mostly future bass and lofi with a little bit of trap mixed in. Then I focused on making melodic dubstep. I was a bit all over the place but I really loved all these genres and what I was making. It was really hard to just work on one style of music. Over quarantine was when I really focused defining the “MATT BARRI” sound. I really put myself out there and started singing on my own tracks and tapping into my rock and electro roots. What evolved was an emo inspired electro pop sound.

“I’m In Space While You’re Worlds Apart” carries a more melancholic and introspective vibe on the EP. What emotions and experiences influenced the creation of this particular track, and how does it fit into the overall narrative of the EP?

It was my songwriting final at ICON during the lockdown, we had classes over zoom.  It was at the same time there were these massive wild fires in Southern California and so everything really did feel apocalyptic. This song was actually originally a ballad with just me singing and a piano. I left a spoken word message to my friends saying goodbye to all of them at once not knowing when I’d ever see them again. There was so much that went into that song. I really loved the melody and how it turned out overall so I built on it and I’m In Space While You’re Worlds Apart was the result.

As a well-rounded artist who balances skills as a songwriter, producer, and DJ, can you discuss the challenges and rewards of wearing multiple hats in the music industry? How do these different roles influence your creative process?

Normally when I’m writing a song I’m producing it at the same time. It all  comes together at once for me,  I think It’s interesting how in EDM is perceived as a do everything yourself kind of thing. Not Everyone is good at everything. I like writing, producing, mixing, and engineering, I’m just not a great mixer. One of the challenges for me was recognizing and accepting what my strengths and weakness are. It’s more important to be great at one thing than to just be ok at everything. Realizing that I needed help with my mixing also gave me the opportunity to work with my good friend and literal sonic wizard John Buser. He really helped me out with tracking vocals and mixing, He really pushed me in getting the best vocal performances. It turned out great in the end.

You’ve had the opportunity to DJ internationally and open for artists like Steve Aoki and Lil Jon. How have these live performances and collaborations influenced your music, and what can fans expect from your live shows in the future?

Those were amazing experiences and really helped me mature as a Dj very quickly. I love DJing and put a lot into making my DJ sets impactful and high energy.  When I was growing up I was in many bands and did a lot of musical theater. Performing live is something that I love to do. I just started developing a live set where I’ll be singing live vocals and playing  guitar, bass, maybe some synths here and there. I feel like it’s the best way for my audience to experience my music especially the music from my EP.

Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

I am really excited about the future. I have so much new music including a new EP slated for the beginning of the new year. I am focused on my sound but I am also getting the opportunity to cross genres. I got some re-mixes that will be released soon. I am also really excited about a DnB project that I am working on with my good homie Jorlov called Crumb Pit. Our song WGDC is one of the most popular tracks on Space Yacht’s Summer Sampler compilation and we have some heaters to follow up with. Over all I am really pumped about the future.

Dom Dolla Drops Effervescent Disco-House Track, "Saving Up"

After a series of chart-topping releases throughout the year, including “Eat Your Man” and “Rhyme Dust,” Dom Dolla has returned with his latest single, “Saving Up.”

Released under the banners of Three Six Zero Recordings and Ministry Of Sound UK, the track embodies the essence of feel-good disco and house. Weaving together uplifting synths, soulful vocals and an infectious house beat, “Saving Up” radiates warmth and explores the idea of saving time for loved ones.

Sharing the inspiration behind the song, Dolla recounted a moment in the UK last year. After a busy summer of touring, he and his friends found themselves in a captivating studio with a picturesque view of the beach, where Fatboy Slim hosted his “Big Beach Boutique” event.

Despite being far from home, the Australian house music superstar felt a surge of creativity and a desire to create a record that would remind him of the importance of nurturing his bonds with loved ones. Although he often prefers solitary songwriting, the collaborative effort with friends Clementine Douglas, Caitlin Stubbs and Toby Scott felt serendipitous for this particular track.

Dolla is now touring across the globe throughout the rest of the year. You can grab tickets now and listen to “Saving Up” on streaming platforms here.

PJ Harvey teases career-spanning 2024 US tour

PJ Harvey has teased a career-spanning US tour that could be happening next year.

  • READ MORE: PJ Harvey live in Manchester: a show full of pinch-yourself moments

Earlier this year, Harvey shared her first album in seven years, ‘I Inside The Old Year Dying’. In a four star review of that, NME said it was “an immersive return from a modern master.”

Harvey has been touring the album in the UK and Europe recently and has now hinted at a possible US tour in a new interview with Vulture. In that, Harvey discusses her ongoing European tour while also shining a light on what’s ahead for her in the future.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming UK and European tour, Harvey told the outlet: “It’ll be a look at all of my material over the years, but with a concentration on the latest album…I think it’ll be a really comprehensive show for all ages of PJ Harvey fans,” she said.

“It’s been a great joy, actually, to play some of those earlier songs. I haven’t played many of them live for years. So, I think it’s gonna be a special show for that reason as well.”

The interview noted that the artist had “stateside shows due for fall 2024”, but no further information about these dates are available as yet.

Earlier this week (October 3), Harvey was joined on stage by Johnny Marr at her show in Manchester.

The singer-songwriter was performing the second of two consecutive gigs at the city’s Albert Hall as part of her current UK and European headline tour.

After playing her latest album ‘Inside The Old Year Dying’ in full, Harvey treated the audience to a second set of songs. “I’d like to welcome a very special guest to the stage – please welcome Johnny Marr,” the artist said ahead of a collaborative rendition of ‘The Desperate Kingdom of Love’. The former Smiths guitarist later returned for the encore tracks ‘C’mon Billy’ and ‘White Chalk’.

Following the concert, Marr took to X/Twitter to share an image of himself on stage with Harvey and her band. “Brilliant show by the amazing @PJHarveyUK and her magic band,” he wrote. “A real privilege to play those songs. Love ya Polly.”

In a five-star review of the gig, NME wrote: “The encore sees the return of…Marr, who joins Harvey for ‘C’mon Billy’ and ‘White Chalk’ – two moments that again silenced the audience. Harvey’s stunning falsetto awes on these songs, after being a frequent scene-stealer all evening. The encore feels like another of those special, pinch-yourself moments. It’s good to have her back.”

Harvey’s 2023 UK and European tour kicked off in Dublin last month. The date marked her first live show in six years. While the UK tour has now ended, it’s resumed this weekend in Europe

Listen to Whyte Fang's Wobbly Experimental Banger, "24 HRS"

Whyte Fang is transporting you to a grimy warehouse party for her latest genre-defying release,” “24 HRS.”

After testing it out at several recent shows, she’s now officially released the track, an experimental hybrid with plenty of twists and turns. An isolated refrain kicks off the arrangement in eerie fashion before Fang, the alias of Alison Wonderland, introduces a wobbly bassline that contrasts with commanding kicks.

The first half of “24 HRS” finds a home in woozy trap music before everything turns upside down. She removes its distorted bass and speeds into a maniacal techno drop highlighted by pounding, four-on-the-floor drums. Take a listen below.

On October 12th, fans in Colorado will have a chance to experience “24 HRS” in person when Fang takes over Denver’s ReelWorks  for a special live show. Featuring support from CloudNone and iixv, the warehouse event will serve as the official pre-party of Alison Wonderland’s sold-out Red Rocks outing the following day.

“24 HRS” by Whyte Fang is out now. You can stream the genre-blurring track here.

Bruno Mars cancels Tel Aviv Concert amid Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Bruno Mars was forced to cancel his concert in Tell Aviv yesterday (October 7) following an attack in which Palestinian militants launched an early morning attack on Southern Israel.

Days earlier (October 4), Mars performed his first concert at Tel Aviv’s Park HaYarkon, and was due to return yesterday (October 7) for the second of the dates.

“Bruno Mars concert scheduled to take place tonight is cancelled,” Live Nation Israel wrote Saturday on Instagram.

“All ticket purchases to the show will receive an automatic refund to the credit card through which the purchase was made. We stand with the residents of Israel, IDF fighters and the security forces in these difficult moments.”

Meanwhile, dozens of Israeli music festival goers were killed following yesterday’s attack.

According to CNN, music fans attending the festival reported that rockets began to hit the site around 6:30am before gunfire opened up on those in attendance soon after.

At the time of writing, media reports say that over 400 Israelis have been killed in the wider conflict, with over 2000 injured and over 100 abducted. According to The Guardian, around 350 Palestinians have also been killed since fighting began. Separate reports from media outlets in the area say up to 250 people have been reported killed at the music festival alone, although there has, as yet, been no official confirmation of these figures.

Eyewitnesses at the festival said gunmen left multiple festival goers dead while dozens were taken hostage. Videos have been circulating on social media showing different attendees being taken hostage.

One eyewitness told CNN they began hearing sirens and rockets while at an all-night event at the festival, a rave that borders the desert near Kibbutz Re’im. “We didn’t even have any place to hide because we were at [an] open space. Everyone got so panicked and started to take their stuff,” they explained.

The eyewitness also reported seeing multiple casualties and fatalities at the scene.

The outdoor trance music festival was reportedly produced by NOVA productions, beginning at 11pm and continued throughout the night. According to The Times of Israel, it was attended by thousands of Israelis aged around 20-40 from all over the country. NME has reached out to NOVA productions for comment.
