SZA teases “intimate mini tour” for ‘SOS’ deluxe album ‘Lana’

SZA has teased a potential tour for her ‘SOS’ deluxe album, which she has called ‘Lana’.

The singer-songwriter took to Twitter on Saturday (October 7) to float the idea to her followers: “Was thinking I wanna do an intimate mini tour for deluxe .[sic] But ONLY in the most turnt cities form SOS tour . I made a list . Y’all deserve a reward . I’m so grateful”

Fans have speculated about the cities SZA might be visiting in the comments. One user commented that “atlanta better be on it niece”; the singer replied: “U already know .” Baltimore was another city confirmed by SZA for a ‘Lana’ mini tour date.

SZA, who recently had to postpone her Toronto date due to illness, might be joined by Drake the next time she visits the city. He wrote: “We gon do that shit together when you come back lemme open for you [angel emoji].” The singer recently released a new collaboration with Drake called ‘Slime You Out’, which was the lead single for his album ‘For All The Dogs’ that dropped last Friday (October 6).

Last December, SZA dropped her highly-anticipated second album ‘SOS’, which NME gave five stars, hailing it as “a phenomenal record that barely puts a foot wrong and raises the bar even higher than she set it before.”

NME also hailed her live show in a five-star review: “Theatrics aside, she possesses a key quality that can’t be topped: “she is just a phenomenal songwriter” one fan notes upon exit. Few, if any, can hold a candle to SZA’s supreme talent, as tonight shows.”

Spotify reportedly launching new “Supremium” tier with more features

Spotify are reportedly set to launch a new ‘Supremium’ tier that contains extra features for higher prices.

  • READ MORE: Streaming – what happens next? Artists demand “a shift in the way business is done”

A report in The Independent say the new tier will cost twice the current price at $19.99 (£16.33) and that it will offer lossless audio – a feature currently offered on Apple Music for free.

The tier will also reportedly include new statistics about listening, a new audiobook feature as well as AI playlist generation tools. The Independent say the changes have been noted by technology expert Chris Messina, who, according to the publication, “found mentions of the update with Spotify.”

The new audiobook feature has already been rolled out and it allows users to stream up to 15 hours of audiobooks for free each month.

The streaming platform rolled out the new feature in the UK and Australia earlier this week (October 3), and are set to bring it over to users in the US by the end of the year. Spotify first began introducing audiobooks to its library in September last year. However, they were never offered to users for free, and even premium subscribers had to pay individually for each title.

The new update for audiobooks is just one of the new features that Spotify has been rolling out this year. Just last month, the platform launched Showcase – a new tool which allows artists to pay to have their music promoted on the site’s homepage.

AI has also been seen on Spotify recently via the use of an AI DJ that automatically selects and introduces songs and a feature that allows people to listen to podcasts in other languages with AI voices.

In other Spotify news, last month the company’s boss, Daniel Ek, weighed in on the controversial debate about the use of artificial intelligence in music – confirming that the streaming service has no plans to completely ban AI-generated content.

GRiZ Goes Back to Where It All Began With Final EP Before Hiatus: Listen to "Ouroboros"

Typically depicting a snake devouring its own tail, the “ouroboros” represents the never-ending cycle of death and rebirth, a motif GRiZ knows well.

Back in June, he announced his plans to take time off from his career to focus on his personal life. The time has now come for GRiZ to say goodbye, but before he goes, he’s treated fans to one last EP that calls upon his roots.

Titled Ouroboros, the record opens with a message from GRiZ thanking fans for all the support over the years and wishing them well before he departs. Leading things off is “Drop In,” a funky track that will resonate with fans of his earliest releases thanks to its soulful keys and filthy wobbles. Elsewhere, he stuns with “Is There Any Love,” a heady anthem with plenty of saxophone and chopped-up vocal samples for his day-one fans.

The downtempo and minimal sounds of “F A D I N G” then give way to the wompy, free-spirited anthem “Falling Flying” as a nod to fans of GRiZ’s more experimental sound. After a quick intermission, he begins Ouroboros‘ grand finale with a pair of gargantuan tracks that demonstrate how he became one of the biggest names in modern-day bass music.

A collaboration with ProbCause, “Knucklepuck” is a filthy funkstep and hip-hop hybrid that smacks with a lethal dose of wobbles. Closing on a bittersweet note is “Better From Here,” which starts with distant sax patterns layered with gentle, ethereal keys. As the song progresses, GRiZ flings headlong into a smooth and intricate dubstep jam, putting the spotlight on the trusty brass companion that’s taken him from local shows to headlining performances all over the world.

Listen to Ouroboros below and find the EP on streaming platforms here.

Manchester city centre filled with ads slamming Tories for abandoning events industry

Manchester has been filled with large ads slamming the Tories for the “complete and utter decimation of the events industry”.

Sacha Lord, the Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester, rented the largest digital billboard in the city to display an ad of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the words: “I ignored 3.8 million self-employed… because they didn’t vote Tory.” The billboard is located directly above the Conservative Party Conference, which was held last week in the city centre. He also rented vans to play the digital ads on their backs.

Lord, who is the co-creator of Parklife Festival and The Warehouse Project, posted a statement on social media explaining his reasons. “During the pandemic we witnessed the complete and utter decimation of the events industry,” he said. “Freelancers were left with no financial support whatsoever.

“I witnessed families break up, marriages dissolve, houses repossessed. I even know of two people who took their own lives, they simply could not live riddled with so much debt. There were, in total, 3.8 million self-employed people who were left to fend for themselves. At the time, none of us could work out why was the Chancellor doing this,” he continued.

Playing a previous interview of Sunak, Lord then said: “3.8 million people were left out to dry. The reason being, he didn’t believe they would vote Conservative. He put politics before lives.

“So if you were one of those people who were excluded, or had your lives ruined, this is for you. This must never, ever happen again. It’s a disgrace. And we should never forget the injustice these people suffered.”

Lord has previously called for the government to reinstate their former drug-testing policy. Parklife has offered on-site drug testing in collaboration with drug-checking charity The Loop for a decade. However, the charity were informed 48 hours before the festival that they had to apply for a license (which can take up to 16 weeks). It was the first time in ten years that Parklife could not offer on-site drug testing. Lord called the Home Office’s U-Turn a “reckless disregard for the safety of festival goers”, adding: “Without this facility we are putting people’s lives at risk”.

Meanwhile, the Music Venue Trust (MVT) recently warned that the government’s “failure to act on energy bills” will “inevitably” mean 2023 will be the worst year for closures since the MVT’s creation in 2014. They said: “We welcome the support for theatres, museums, art galleries and orchestras, but once again we note that all of the Chancellor’s announcements on tax relief for these sectors exclude Grassroots Music Venues and artists.”

Rello Ranzano: Navigating Musical Echoes and Authenticity in a Global Soundscape

Every artist carries with them a mosaic of influences, a blend of inspirations that ultimately culminate into their unique sound. For Rello Ranzano, this mosaic paints a vivid picture of powerful voices from the past, influences from global icons, and an undying passion for authenticity.

Lil Wayne’s ingenuity, 50 Cent’s poignant tales of the street, and Drake’s emotional candor – these are just a few of the influential forces that have shaped Ranzano’s musical journey. Reflecting on what sparked his passion for music, Ranzano recalls, “Lil Wayne just made music enjoyable and he made being intelligent cool. 50 Cent just spoke about things that were going on around me daily so it felt like he understood us.”

These influences are more than mere names to Ranzano. They represent pivotal moments in his life, guiding lights that have illuminated his path in the world of music. While many are inspired by artists, few internalize this inspiration to the extent that it becomes an integral part of their creative process. Ranzano has managed to do just that.

However, Ranzano’s relationship with music is not just about imitating his inspirations. It’s about innovating and evolving. “My style has evolved a lot from trying to sound cool to actually just being myself,” he explains. This evolution speaks to Ranzano’s commitment to authenticity and his quest to find his unique voice amidst the cacophony of the industry.

A striking element of Ranzano’s musical journey is his songwriting process. Eschewing traditional methods, he relies on intuition and raw emotion. “I don’t write, I just sit there and feel the beat and I allow the beat and my inner feelings to guide me,” he shares. This organic approach, driven by real experiences and emotions, brings an undeniable authenticity to his tracks, setting him apart in a landscape often criticized for its lack of depth.

Ranzano’s work also stands as a testament to the universal nature of music. His belief that his “feelings go well with any culture, the past, present, and the future” emphasizes music’s timeless ability to bridge gaps, transcend cultures, and resonate with audiences from diverse backgrounds.

Despite his clear influences from industry giants, Ranzano’s music is also shaped by a myriad of personal experiences. Growing up in Nassau, Bahamas, he witnessed the interplay of rap, reggae, and dancehall, absorbing the sounds and stories of a place known for its idyllic beauty yet laden with its own complexities. This intersection of personal history with global influences results in a sound that is at once unique yet universally relatable.

For fans and fellow artists alike, Ranzano’s journey offers invaluable insights. It underscores the importance of remaining true to oneself, of taking inspiration but also paving one’s own path, and of understanding that at its core, music is an emotional endeavor.

As Ranzano continues his ascent in the music industry, his commitment to authenticity, his deep reverence for his influences, and his innovative approach to songwriting promise to usher in a sound that’s not just heard but deeply felt. It’s a journey of a young artist from Nassau, echoing global icons, yet fiercely carving a niche of his own.

Pendulum Reveal New "ANIMA" EP Featuring Two Heavy Metal Crossovers

Pendulum are bundling up their summer singles with some unreleased tunes to keep us warm during the chilly fall.

Coming this November is ANIMA, the newest EP from the influential electronic group. Back in June, fans saw Pendulum team up with Matthew Tuck, the frontman of the heavy metal band Bullet For My Valentine, for their hybrid tune “Halo.” Early last month, they stepped out from the darkness with the vibrant drum & bass offering, “Colourfast.”

Pendulum took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the complete tracklist and release date of ANIMA, the follow-up to 2021’s Elemental. Fans will have to remain patient to hear what the final pair of tracks, “Mercy Killing” and “Silent Spinner,” will sound like, but the group revealed in a press release that the former is another metal hybrid with some added hip-hop flair from Scarlxrd.

In addition to the upcoming EP, Pendulum are also set to take their show on the road for some of their biggest performances to date. For the next week, they’ll be performing across Australia and New Zealand as part of a six-stop continental run. In March, the band will take over the United Kingdom for a special arena tour.

Janelle Monae drops uplifting remix of ‘Champagne Shit’ with Latto and Quavo

Janelle Monae has dropped the uplifting remix of her song ‘Champagne Shit’ featuring Latto and Quavo.

Taken off her recent album ‘The Age Of Pleasure’, which NME gave four stars, ‘Champagne Shit’ now has two brand new verses from the rappers. Monae has previously described the album as “our oasis made with love, rooted in self-acceptance, throbbing in self-discovery, and signed with cherry red kisses from me to you.” NME said of the record: “listening to Monae’s liberating latest album, you start to believe that pleasure is, too.”

The album can also count former US president Barack Obama as a fan. Obama recently released his annual summer playlist; Monae’s ‘Only Have Eyes 42’, from ‘The Age of Pleasure’, made an appearance on his list.

You can listen to the new remix here:

Monae is currently on tour, having added eight extra dates to her North American leg and telling fans: “Tap into your free energy. That’s rooted in self-love — not arrogance. Tap into that space and then take care of each other. That’s what I hope. With the shows that I do, and when I look out, it’s an experience. It’s like our own church. You want to take care of each other.”

The Kansas native also put out a call for Black women and nonbinary photographers and videographers to join her on tour.

She wrote on Twitter: “I’m so excited to be partnering with @BlkWomenPhoto, @LiveNation and @FEMtheFUTURE to hire Black women and non-binary photographers for “The Age Of Pleasure Tour!!!” Monáe wrote in a tweet.

GORDO and Drake Reconnect for Two New Tracks On "For All The Dogs" Album

Following last year’s Honestly, Nevermind album, GORDO and Drake have linked back up for a pair of new studio collaborations.

After months of anticipation, Drake’s new album, For All The Dogs, landed on streaming services everywhere this week and the effort features two tracks produced by GORDO, “Gently” and “Rich Baby Daddy.” Previously, the pair famously teamed up on six songs from Drake’s seventh studio album, which dropped by surprise in the summer of 2022 before shattering records on Apple Music.

GORDO’s penchant for the fusion of Latin and house music lends itself well to “Gently,” which features smooth bars from Bad Bunny.

Meanwhile, “Rich Baby Daddy” features an equally high-profile verse from SZA with production that incorporates a combination of clean hi-hats, brisk beats and dreamy synths.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter,) GORDO also said that fans can expect a studio album of his own to release next. It’s an effort that’s long been in the works, and one that Drake himself even shared high praise of late last year, calling it “insane.”
