Your EDM Premiere: Kaiwei Brings New Innovation to Atmospheric Wave With His Aptly Named ‘Reprocessor’ Album

Taiwanese-Brooklyn transplant Calvin “Kai-Wei” Chang’s debut album Reprocessor is musical, dense and seemingly done-based, causing it to straddle a number of genres from experimental to darkwave to IDM, but that’s not what sets it apart. It’s the fact that it’s made entirely from found sounds, recorded by Chang between 2020 and 2022; no extra sounds or samples have been added. Intended to document the changes in life during COVID, Chang took these sounds and painstakingly reworked, re-engineered and, of course, reprocessed them until they made the visceral, flowing statement piece that is this album. Chang sums it up best himself:

Reprocessor is a sonic documentation and “musicalization” of Covid19 era found sounds, with songs composed between 2020-2022. In lieu of conventional “reworking” of source materials, over two hours in length of raw recordings are repetitively reinforced, dissected and extracted for expressive sonic events.

When one really stops to think about the fact that the source material on Reprocessor is the only material, it’s sort of mindboggling, especially from the perspective of an EDM producer; this is how electronic music was originally formed back in the 1940s through the 60s and even up to the 80s. Before we had this massive library of sounds for drums, kicks, snares, pianos and strings to modify for synths, all of those things had to be recoded, pitched, cleaned up, stored and passed on so there could even be synthesizers and programmers. We’re so far modernized now that it’s all taken for granted and the sounds and space have become so clean and accurate that new sounds are created from samples of samples of samples. So what happens when a producer applies all this new tech to the grassroots sound sound loop format? Kaiwei has the answer.

It doesn’t seem Kaiwei’s intention with Reprocessor was to go grassroots in any way, but rather to see what it would sound like to make full compositions out of found recordings using modern gear. One could easily glean that even with modern benefits, it’s a painstaking and tedious process of math, code, and cut/copy/paste to get said compositions lined up, layered and sounding anything like music. The result, however, seems worth the trouble.

With a number of instrumental musicians also contributing sounds to the album, Reprocessor is very much still in the experimental realm of things, and listening to it, one can easily understand how he’s earned a reputation for his compositions accompanying multimedia art instillations and avant garde performing arts pieces. That said, it’s also very much tinged with drone, industrial and even deep house sounds. The musicality of many pieces, such as the title track, “Breakbeat Funky 102” (if you assume there’s anything resembling a conventional breakbeat in this track, you’d be dead wrong) and the “Tors” series might be hard to find on first listen, but keep listening. Through the drone and chaos, almost every part of these tracks it an actually quite delicate piece of symphony-like composition.

Other tracks, such as “Identity” (the only track with a discernable beat), “4u” and the endlessly ambient “Duet” sound more trad musical but that’s only because they’re also quite melodic and have recognizable music sounds. What Reprocessor asks of the listener is to take the album as a whole and connect the dots so the music can be heard in any part of the composition. “Chung Yeung,” a our YEDM premiere today, is the first track on the album and seems to be a preview of this apparent dichotomy, straddling the heavy and the sublime and finding music in both parts.

The opening track of this record, “Chung Yeung” is in of itself a compilation of short compositional and sonic ideas, that all sprung from a series of freely improvised, live-processed trombone and vocal performances. The multi-sectional form foreshadows the overarching structure of the full record, as well as some of its key sonic elements and themes.

Named after the famous lunar calendar festival (loosely translated at “Double Ninth Festival” as it takes place on the ninth day of the ninth month), a day of remembrance where the Chinese and Taiwanese people climb mountains to their ancestors’ graves to clean, maintain and leave gifts, “Chung Yeung” sets a somber tone for the album: this is both a remembrance of the struggles of COVID and perhaps those who lost their lives, and a clearing out and “reprocessing” of those ghostly sounds and energies from a period many of us are still trying to process.

The realm of experimental music serves as a leading edge example of what may be possible in commercial music and said commercial musicians look to artists like Kaiwei to push that boundary for them. However in the case of Reprocessor, it seems Kaiwei is also saying it’s important to know ones roots and hone one’s compositional skills as well. COVID showed humanity its own limitations; we’re one solar flare away from losing most if not all of our digital resources, but Kaiwei and others who know how to create music from their own loops would likely be leading the charge in that case. In the meantime, capturing the energy and feeling of such a tumultuous time is also important. If nothing else, Reprocessor shows that creativity will always find a way, and that it will even make new ways for sound and expression with only some found loops, a heap of patience and a need to be heard.

Reprocessor releases on Monday, October 9th and will be available to stream on Spotify (where a few tracks are already available) and can be pre-ordered for purchase on Kaiwei’s Bandcamp page.

Sentinel Release Festival-Ready Debut EP, "Eyes On You"

With their recent track record, Sentinel are poised for a breakout. Following the release of their collaborative effort with Martin Garrix and Bonn in June, the Australian trio of brothers have released their debut EP via Tomorrowland Music.

The release of Eyes On You is a big moment for the group, encapsulating their intoxicating, high-energy sound into a three-track package. The previously released singles on the EP, “Eyes On You” and “Get That Love,” serve as a telling mouthpiece for Sentinel. Both songs are written with massive stages in mind, ready to take over the dancefloor at a moment’s notice.

“Hallucinate” is the sole brand-new addition to the EP and it’s a crowd-pleaser through and through. The track is a festival-ready anthem, complete with commanding grooves to get crowds moving before they even realize it.

While Eyes On You may be a milestone for Sentinel, the last two years have been red-hot. The trio has landed two major collaborations in the past two years, collaborating with Alesso for 2022’s “Only You” and with Garrix and Bonn for “Hurricane” earlier this year. With the momentum they’ve created for themselves heading into 2024, there’s no telling how high Sentinel can reach.

You can listen to Eyes On You below and find the new EP on streaming platforms here.

Jack White to release Bob Dylan collaboration of ‘Ball & Biscuit’

Jack White is set to release his collaborative live version of ‘Ball and Biscuit’ with Bob Dylan – find all the details below.

Back in 2004, White joined Dylan on stage in Detroit, Michigan to perform a joint rendition of The White Stripes‘ 2003 song from the band’s fourth studio album, ‘Elephant’.

White announced yesterday (October 5) that an official recording of the team-up will be released as part of a new vinyl collection, ‘The White Stripes – Live In Las Vegas’. The 3xLP package is due to arrive on October 31 via Third Man Records.

To order the special set, fans are required to subscribe to the label’s ‘Vault’ by October 31. Visit here for further information.

Per a post on social media, the upcoming release “captures a blistering 2003 Las Vegas set freshly pressed on 180-gram vinyl at @thirdmanpressing in Detroit, in the unmistakable red, white and black colourway we know and love from the Stripes”.

White and Dylan’s version of ‘Ball and Biscuit’ will feature on a bonus seven-inch record pressed on glittery red vinyl. “On the flip side, the first-ever performance of the song by Jack and Meg,” the post adds.

The set will be accompanied by a patch, a bumper sticker and art prints by The White Stripes’ frequent collaborator Rob Jones. Check out the preview image above.

As Consequence notes, White looked back on his performance with Dylan during an interview with The Wall Street Journal in 2012.

“That was just by accident. I went and saw him play in Detroit and he said to me, ‘We’ve been playing one of your songs lately at sound checks’,” the singer-songwriter recalled at the time.

“I thought, Wow. I was afraid to ask which one. I didn’t even ask. It was just such an honour to hear that. Later on, I remember I went home and I called back. I said, ‘Can I talk to the bass player?’”

White continued: “I called the theater. I was like, ‘Did Bob mean that he wanted me to play tonight? Cause he said some things that I thought maybe – maybe I misconstrued. Was he meaning that he wanted me to play with him tonight? I don’t want to be rude and pretend that I didn’t hear or something like that’.

“So turned out yeah, we played together that night. He said yeah, come on, let’s play something, and we played ‘Ball and Biscuit’, one of my songs. It’s not lost on me that he played one of my songs, not the other way around.”

In other news, Bob Dylan recently played a surprise set with The Heartbreakers at Farm Aid. He’s currently out on the 2023 North American leg of his ‘Rough And Rowdy Ways’ tour, which kicked off in Kansas City last weekend.

Sigrid shares new single ‘Ghost’ and announces ‘The Hype’ EP

Sigrid has announced her new EP ‘The Hype’ and shared a new single from the EP ‘Ghost’. Check it out below.

The Norwegian singer (full name Sigrid Solbakk Raabe) recently returned with the EP’s title track ‘The Hype’ last August. It follows on from her 2022 album ‘How To Let Go’, which achieved four stars from NME, described as  “an album about embracing life in all its chaotic and contradictory glory” and “so life-affirming.”

Today (October 6), Sigrid has revealed that ‘The Hype’ EP will drop on October 27 via Island Records, and shared further details about the EP.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a thing for everything that is catchy – especially melodies you just can’t get out of your head,” she said. “It doesn’t really matter what genre it is, as long as I wanna put it on repeat. No wonder I started making pop music! I’ve never really wanted to make one type of pop song, I just wanna write good songs.”

She continued: “I’ve been writing and writing, and I felt like releasing one single this year just wasn’t enough, so I decided to put out an EP to show where I’m at now musically. I love the format: short and snappy, but enough time to showcase different sides to the songwriting, the story and the sound.

“On ‘The Hype’ EP I’ve written about wondering if you really did live up to the expectations, messing up, getting over someone, and: you’ll be fine! and I hope these lyrics will give you comfort in reading them, and the melodies make you wanna put it on repeat.”

Find the album art and tracklisting below:

‘The Hype’ tracklisting is:

1. ‘The Hype’
2. ‘Borderline’
3. ‘Ghost’
4. ‘Wanted It To Be You’

Currently on tour in Norway, Sigrid has had a busy festival season, headlining Norway’s Øya Festival and playing Joyland Bali Festival. She also stopped by the UK last August at Big Festival and Victorious Festival.

Breaking out with her 2017 debut EP ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’, Sigrid has gone on to release two Top Five albums: 2019’s ‘Sucker Punch’ and 2022’s ‘How To Let Go’. She has also embarked on various arena shows in both London and Ireland, as well as global world tours from Japan to LA and festival performances at Glastonbury.

Manic Street Preachers and Suede announce joint UK and Ireland tour

Manic Street Preachers and Suede have announced details of a joint UK and Ireland tour for summer 2024. Check out full dates and ticket details below.

  • READ MORE: Manic Street Preachers interviewed: “We talked ourselves through oblivion”

The two indie giants first toured Europe together back in 1993, before last year they recreated the line-up for a US jaunt – with upcoming joint dates to follow in Japan this winter.

Now, they’ve announced details of bringing the tour to the UK and Ireland next June and July, with each act playing for approximately 75 minutes of about 16 songs, and taking it in turns to play last each evening.

“We’ve both got a dedicated fanbase, but we do share a gene pool and a rabid denomination of fans,” Manics bassist and lyricist Nick Wire said on BBC Breakfast this morning. “It’s because we never belonged to anything apart from ourselves. We were never part of grunge, we never part of Britpop.”

He added: “And we just looked better than anyone back then anyway.”

Suede frontman Brett Anderson said: “It’s really inspiring to have a band that you love playing with you. It’s like a friendly competition.”

Both bands are survivors of the ’90s – as well as alumni of the NME Godlike Genius Award. Last year, Manics frontman James Dean Bradfield explained a greater “symmetry” between the Manics and Suede.

“A lot of bands were quite short on glamour at that point [in the early 90s],” he said. “They shared the same DNA with us of trading on an underground customised glamour. They had these dystopian, J.G. Ballard landscapes in a lot of the songs, so along those lines we definitely fitted. We were both quite visceral live bands too. Brett is one loud motherfucker on stage! They kind of share the same path as us. They’ve been through a few things and they’re still here.”

The Manics and Suede were also lumped in with the Britpop movement of the ’90s. Suede had always vocally rejected their place in the genre, while Bradfield said they were able to “switch off to stuff like that”.

“We’d been around before most of those bands, except Blur,” he said. “We knew that ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’, ‘La Tristessa’, ‘Faster’, ‘Revol’, ‘Motown Junk’ and ‘You Love Us’ had existed way before Britpop had ever been a twinkle in anyone’s reproductive systems. We knew that we were apart from it, but when we got co-opted into it we weren’t bothered at all. It meant that we played to bigger audiences, sold more records and reached more people. Then all these people knew the lyrics to ‘Faster’ and ‘A Design For Life’.

“In politics you say you need to win the middle ground, you need to give up a part of your soul. Suddenly we were winning the middle ground and hadn’t given up any part of our soul.”

The full tour dates for the Manics and Suede joint UK and Ireland tour are below. Tickets are on sale from 9am BST on Friday October 13 and will be available here.

Hidden Axis & Medyk Link Up For Emotional Melodic Bass Single “Matrix” + Interview

In the Bay Area’s vibrant sonic landscape, Hidden Axis, born Julie Yeung, stands as a testament to authentic metamorphosis. With a background deeply rooted in STEM, she found her true “hidden axis” in music. Her previous offering, “Better Off Alone,” amassed an astounding 264,000+ streams across all platforms.

Medyk, an enigmatic singer and songwriter, accolades and collaborations are nothing short of inspiring. Having collaborated with industry powerhouses such as Slander, ARMNHMR, Synymata, Adventure Club, N3wport, Culture Code, Murdoch, and Whales, she’s carved out a distinctive place in the music industry. The resonance of her work is not only evident in the whopping 9 million streams she’s amassed across platforms but also in her notable presence on Spotify editorial playlists like Heart Beats and ARMNHMR DJ Mix.

Now, these two immensely talented artists have come together for their latest single “Matrix” – and emotional melodic bass single that boasts a stadium rocking chorus. Taking cues from the eponymous movie, the song encapsulates the trials of a sensitive overthinker, trying to navigate an alternate reality of her own creation, a personal ‘Matrix’. It’s a beautiful rollercoaster of emotions that only leaves us wanting more!

As a song, “Matrix” is an attempt to package the complex mix of emotions, moods, and thoughts that I experience as an over-thinker and sensitive individual.” – Hidden Axis

We also had the opportunity to chat with Hidden Axis about the song, her career, and what’s ahead. Enjoy!

The track’s title “Matrix” and its ties to the struggles of an overthinker are intriguing. How did you decide on the name, and what’s its link to the renowned film?

The name was from one of the demos that Medyk wrote that I connected to a lot. Much like there’s an alternate reality with an army in the film, the anxious and overthinking character in this song grapples with an alternate reality that she’s created inside her head — one where she believes there is an “army aiming at her” that

Transitioning from a STEM-focused background to the world of music is quite a leap. How has this unique path shaped your musical style and lyricism?

I’m not sure that STEM directly influenced my musical style and lyricism, but I would say it definitely made me a little more aware of my “why” for music. I’d pursued STEM not because I loved it, but because it was conventional and safe. When music came into my life, I felt free, present, and fulfilled, which was a stark contrast. And although I am super grateful to have received the education that I did, I felt like I didn’t have the best mental health. So perhaps part of why I enjoy writing about mental health so much may stem from that. And my hope is that in feeling and connecting with my music, folks can connect to and reflect upon what makes them feel most “free” as well.

Your song “Better Off Alone” garnered impressive streams. Did that success create any expectations or pressure as you worked on “Matrix”?

I honestly did not think about stream count too much when I was creating music. Maybe I was comparing back to this track to see how I could elevate my production chops for this release, but that was more from a curiosity and learning standpoint. I did start to think more about how this song would do as I moved more into the releasing phases though…so we’ll see!

As a voice in the Bay Area’s dynamic music community, in what ways do you feel your sound adds to or differentiates itself within this scene?

As someone who loves melodic bass, I’d definitely say that genre has a heavy influence on how I write. However, I also really have been enjoying writing midtempo bass, drum and bass, and other genres, so I’d say my “sound” is a cross-pollination between sounds from various genres.

Collaborating with Medyk on “Matrix” must’ve been an amalgamation of two distinct styles. How was that experience for you?

Honestly it didn’t feel like two distinct styles since the writing process went pretty smooth! When we were starting off, I told her roughly what I wanted to write about, she wrote a couple concepts, I chose “Matrix” then the rest was history. Medyk is honestly so talented and I’m grateful to have gotten to work with her.

There’s buzz about your future collaborations with artists like Wisner, Meggie York, and Luma. Could you offer a glimpse into the stylistic direction these might take?

Yeah I’m super stoked about those. The vibes for these tracks are dark and moody, and they intentionally explore sounds from different genres: Drum and Bass, Melodic Bass, and Midtempo. Stay tuned!

You’ve emphasized the emotional depth of “Matrix.” What sentiment or takeaway do you hope listeners derive from the track?

Yep so Matrix attempts to capture the complexity and intensity of emotions of someone who is sensitive, socially anxious, and an overthinker (maybe me). Whatever their connection to the song may be, I hope that the song makes listeners feel something.

Anything you can reveal coming forth in the future?

Got more shows coming up! Playing Breakaway Fest on Friday, October 13 at the San Francisco Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. And I got more songs and shows coming up, stay tuned 😉
