Manic Street Preachers and Suede announce joint UK and Ireland tour

Manic Street Preachers and Suede have announced details of a joint UK and Ireland tour for summer 2024. Check out full dates and ticket details below.

The two indie giants first toured Europe together back in 1993, before last year they recreated the line-up for a US jaunt – with upcoming joint dates to follow in Japan this winter.

Now, they’ve announced details of bringing the tour to the UK and Ireland next June and July, with each act playing for approximately 75 minutes of about 16 songs, and taking it in turns to play last each evening.

“We’ve both got a dedicated fanbase, but we do share a gene pool and a rabid denomination of fans,” Manics bassist and lyricist Nick Wire said on BBC Breakfast this morning. “It’s because we never belonged to anything apart from ourselves. We were never part of grunge, we never part of Britpop.”

He added: “And we just looked better than anyone back then anyway.”

Suede frontman Brett Anderson said: “It’s really inspiring to have a band that you love playing with you. It’s like a friendly competition.”

Both bands are survivors of the ’90s – as well as alumni of the NME Godlike Genius Award. Last year, Manics frontman James Dean Bradfield explained a greater “symmetry” between the Manics and Suede.

“A lot of bands were quite short on glamour at that point [in the early 90s],” he said. “They shared the same DNA with us of trading on an underground customised glamour. They had these dystopian, J.G. Ballard landscapes in a lot of the songs, so along those lines we definitely fitted. We were both quite visceral live bands too. Brett is one loud motherfucker on stage! They kind of share the same path as us. They’ve been through a few things and they’re still here.”

The Manics and Suede were also lumped in with the Britpop movement of the ’90s. Suede had always vocally rejected their place in the genre, while Bradfield said they were able to “switch off to stuff like that”.

“We’d been around before most of those bands, except Blur,” he said. “We knew that ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’, ‘La Tristessa’, ‘Faster’, ‘Revol’, ‘Motown Junk’ and ‘You Love Us’ had existed way before Britpop had ever been a twinkle in anyone’s reproductive systems. We knew that we were apart from it, but when we got co-opted into it we weren’t bothered at all. It meant that we played to bigger audiences, sold more records and reached more people. Then all these people knew the lyrics to ‘Faster’ and ‘A Design For Life’.

“In politics you say you need to win the middle ground, you need to give up a part of your soul. Suddenly we were winning the middle ground and hadn’t given up any part of our soul.”

The full tour dates for the Manics and Suede joint UK and Ireland tour are below. Tickets are on sale from 9am BST on Friday October 13 and will be available here.

Hidden Axis & Medyk Link Up For Emotional Melodic Bass Single “Matrix” + Interview

In the Bay Area’s vibrant sonic landscape, Hidden Axis, born Julie Yeung, stands as a testament to authentic metamorphosis. With a background deeply rooted in STEM, she found her true “hidden axis” in music. Her previous offering, “Better Off Alone,” amassed an astounding 264,000+ streams across all platforms.

Medyk, an enigmatic singer and songwriter, accolades and collaborations are nothing short of inspiring. Having collaborated with industry powerhouses such as Slander, ARMNHMR, Synymata, Adventure Club, N3wport, Culture Code, Murdoch, and Whales, she’s carved out a distinctive place in the music industry. The resonance of her work is not only evident in the whopping 9 million streams she’s amassed across platforms but also in her notable presence on Spotify editorial playlists like Heart Beats and ARMNHMR DJ Mix.

Now, these two immensely talented artists have come together for their latest single “Matrix” – and emotional melodic bass single that boasts a stadium rocking chorus. Taking cues from the eponymous movie, the song encapsulates the trials of a sensitive overthinker, trying to navigate an alternate reality of her own creation, a personal ‘Matrix’. It’s a beautiful rollercoaster of emotions that only leaves us wanting more!

As a song, “Matrix” is an attempt to package the complex mix of emotions, moods, and thoughts that I experience as an over-thinker and sensitive individual.” – Hidden Axis

We also had the opportunity to chat with Hidden Axis about the song, her career, and what’s ahead. Enjoy!

The track’s title “Matrix” and its ties to the struggles of an overthinker are intriguing. How did you decide on the name, and what’s its link to the renowned film?

The name was from one of the demos that Medyk wrote that I connected to a lot. Much like there’s an alternate reality with an army in the film, the anxious and overthinking character in this song grapples with an alternate reality that she’s created inside her head — one where she believes there is an “army aiming at her” that

Transitioning from a STEM-focused background to the world of music is quite a leap. How has this unique path shaped your musical style and lyricism?

I’m not sure that STEM directly influenced my musical style and lyricism, but I would say it definitely made me a little more aware of my “why” for music. I’d pursued STEM not because I loved it, but because it was conventional and safe. When music came into my life, I felt free, present, and fulfilled, which was a stark contrast. And although I am super grateful to have received the education that I did, I felt like I didn’t have the best mental health. So perhaps part of why I enjoy writing about mental health so much may stem from that. And my hope is that in feeling and connecting with my music, folks can connect to and reflect upon what makes them feel most “free” as well.

Your song “Better Off Alone” garnered impressive streams. Did that success create any expectations or pressure as you worked on “Matrix”?

I honestly did not think about stream count too much when I was creating music. Maybe I was comparing back to this track to see how I could elevate my production chops for this release, but that was more from a curiosity and learning standpoint. I did start to think more about how this song would do as I moved more into the releasing phases though…so we’ll see!

As a voice in the Bay Area’s dynamic music community, in what ways do you feel your sound adds to or differentiates itself within this scene?

As someone who loves melodic bass, I’d definitely say that genre has a heavy influence on how I write. However, I also really have been enjoying writing midtempo bass, drum and bass, and other genres, so I’d say my “sound” is a cross-pollination between sounds from various genres.

Collaborating with Medyk on “Matrix” must’ve been an amalgamation of two distinct styles. How was that experience for you?

Honestly it didn’t feel like two distinct styles since the writing process went pretty smooth! When we were starting off, I told her roughly what I wanted to write about, she wrote a couple concepts, I chose “Matrix” then the rest was history. Medyk is honestly so talented and I’m grateful to have gotten to work with her.

There’s buzz about your future collaborations with artists like Wisner, Meggie York, and Luma. Could you offer a glimpse into the stylistic direction these might take?

Yeah I’m super stoked about those. The vibes for these tracks are dark and moody, and they intentionally explore sounds from different genres: Drum and Bass, Melodic Bass, and Midtempo. Stay tuned!

You’ve emphasized the emotional depth of “Matrix.” What sentiment or takeaway do you hope listeners derive from the track?

Yep so Matrix attempts to capture the complexity and intensity of emotions of someone who is sensitive, socially anxious, and an overthinker (maybe me). Whatever their connection to the song may be, I hope that the song makes listeners feel something.

Anything you can reveal coming forth in the future?

Got more shows coming up! Playing Breakaway Fest on Friday, October 13 at the San Francisco Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. And I got more songs and shows coming up, stay tuned 😉

Spotify May Be Working on AI-Powered, Prompt-Driven Playlist Feature

As prompt-based generative AI tools continue to invade the world of music, new reports have indicated that Spotify seems to be working on a text-to-playlist concept to curate based on keywords and phrases.

The feature would ostensibly work similarly to the way text-to-image AI programs create visual content from user-generated descriptions. It was unearthed by tech veteran Chris Messina, who discovered lines of code within the Spotify app referring to “AI playlists” and “playlists based on your prompts.”

View the original article to see embedded media.

This idea is already being explored by other platforms, like PlaylistAI, a free iOS app that allows users to input prompts, imagery, videos and even the music you listen to most frequently to deliver a custom playlist in Apple Music or Spotify.

Spotify ultimately declined to comment on the speculation in a statement shared with TechCrunch.

“At Spotify, we are constantly iterating and ideating to improve our product offering and offer value to users,” a Spotify spokesperson said. “But we don’t comment on speculation around possible new features and do not have anything new to share at this time.

Stray Kids announce details of new EP ‘Rock-Star’

Stray Kids have announced details of their next EP, ‘Rock-Star’, which will arrive next month.

The JYP Entertainment boyband confirmed their next comeback earlier today (October 6), sharing a “prologue” video online.

The clip captures the feelings of a small child preparing to go on stage to perform as the trumpet player in a band. Rappers Felix and Bang Chan narrate the video, with Felix offering a calming presence in contrast to his bandmate’s manic and theatrical delivery.

“The anxiety is something we create ourselves,” Bang Chan whispers dramatically as stage time approaches. “We believe that you’ll do great if you can get beyond these emotions and enjoy these moments,” Felix counter-balances.

As the children enter the stage, the two shout in unison: “Let’s show them how we rock!” An electric guitar solo cuts in as the band’s logo, the EP title and their slogan appear on the screen in pink.

‘Rock-Star’ will be released at 2pm KST (5am BST) on November 10. It will arrive five months after the release of Stray Kids’ latest full-length album ‘5-Star’ and will “have a close relationship” to that record, according to JYP Entertainment (per Korea JoongAng Daily).

In a five-star review of ‘5-Star’, NME’s Crystal Bell wrote: “Stray Kids are flying so high above the crowd that they’re in a galaxy of their very own, where the parties are endless and the vibes are always five-star.”

The album gave the group their third consecutive Number One on the Billboard 200 in June. It followed their previous records ‘Maxident’ and ‘Oddinary’ – both released in 2022 – in topping the chart.

Last month, three members of Stray Kids were involved in a car accident. Lee Know, Hyunjin and Seungmin were travelling home from a scheduled event when they were involved in a “minor incident”, although none of the stars or their accompanying staff members were “seriously injured”.

However, due to sustaining “mild muscle pain and bruises”, they were advised to “receive conservative treatment” and were put on a temporary hiatus from promotions, including a scheduled appearance at New York’s Global Citizen festival. 3RACHA, the sub-unit comprised of Bang Chan, Changbin and Han, performed at the event in Stray Kids’ wake.

The Beatles “loved the idea” that Russians secretly listened to their “forbidden” music

The Beatles “loved the idea” that Russians secretly listened to their “forbidden” music, Paul McCartney has revealed.

    • READ MORE: The Beatles: every song ranked in order of greatness

The Beatles music, along with other Western artists, was banned from being imported or played in Russia from the 1960s until the 1980s.

Speaking on the McCartney: A Life In Lyrics podcast episode about the band’s famous ‘Back in the U.S.S.R.’ track, McCartney opened up about the ban.

He said: “Everyone in Russia goes back to the Beatles period and remembers having to smuggle records or it was all very you know, little rooms where you could play and you didn’t want people to know.

“You didn’t want the authorities to know that you were listening to this forbidden group, which really, we loved the idea of that – that we were getting smuggled along with Levi’s jeans. This was like true cultural arrival.”

When podcast host poet Paul Muldoon suggested to McCartney that “art is dangerous,” the musician replied: “To some people. We always thought that we were on the right side, that if we were dangerous, we were dangerous to the Russian authorities, and to us that said they’re not that good.

“That was how we felt, and I think it was true to a large extent that they were trying to suppress this Western influence and it goes on…I know there was a period really when you thought ‘oh, it’s all clearing’, but it’s actually the suppression is back big time…God knows what the politics and the realities are behind it at any rate. So for me, it’s kind of nice to just escape into a song like this.”

McCartney recently launched his ‘A Life In Lyrics‘ podcast with the first episode breaking down the creation of The Beatles‘ ‘Eleanor Rigby’.

The 12-part series which is based on the best-selling book, is hosted by the poet Paul Muldoon, who wrote the foreword to The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, will give listeners an unrivalled opportunity to sit in on conversations between McCartney and Muldoon.

Season one will feature 12 episodes and Season 2 will follow with an additional 12 episodes set for release in February of 2024.

In other Beatles news, Ringo Starr has recently said that the “final” Beatles song – which has been made with help from AI –  “should have been out already”.

Shaq and John Summit Tease Upcoming B2B DJ Set

The say opposites attract, but no one could have guessed the house sounds of John Summit and dubstep bangers of DJ Diesel may soon meet behind the decks.

Summit, who recently rebranded his Off The Grid record label as Experts Only, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express interest in DJing alongside Shaq. While Summit’s post was certainly designed for laughs and steeped in his signature tongue-in-cheek tone, Diesel didn’t skip a beat with his response a few days later: “Soon summit, soon.”

If the two do end up going b2b together, it’ll be one of the year’s most viral DJ sets.

Diesel has been hard at work lately, throwing his own curated music festival, “Shaq’s Bass All Stars,” and performing at Lost Lands, Tomorrowland and many more. The NBA Hall of Famer also released his debut electronic album, GORILLA WARFARE, on Monstercat.

Summit, meanwhile, recently headlined ARC Music Festival in his hometown, Chicago. The full performance is available to watch on YouTube. He’s now gearing up to perform with Dom Dolla under the duo’s collaborative alias, Everything Always, in Michigan on October 20th before playing Miami’s III Points festival and a surefire instant-classic night at Club Space.

The 1975’s Ross Macdonald and Ed Thomas team up to produce new Yasmin Hass single ‘Cleo’

Yasmin Hass has released her latest single ‘Cleo’ which was produced by The 1975‘s Ross Macdonald and Ed Thomas (Stormzy, Maisie Peters, Jorja Smith)

The track is the first of three singles to be released from her upcoming EP ‘Worst Of Me’. As described in a press release, ‘Cleo’ is “an unflinching meditation on womanhood in Hass’ mid-20s.”

“This song is about being utterly in love, whilst also wondering, how much freedom do I have left? It touches on the thrill of the unknown and the sudden urge to break away from what feels comfortable and safe,” she said in a statement.

Actor Florence Pugh posted an Instagram story of her listening to the track upon its release. “My gorgeous girl did it again. Go listen to her magical pipes sing from the heart. Love you missy,” read the caption Pugh added to the story.

Hass’ EP ‘Worst Of Me’ is set for release on November 28 via Cool Online. Speaking about where her inspiration comes from, the singer said: “My mum, my sister, my grandmother, my aunt. Their sense of self in the work they do… I am a product of many different cultures and backgrounds, led by women who let creativity lead them, and who have inspired me to do the same.”

On her EP and the negative connotations usually attached with its title, Hass’ rejected the idea that baring one’s rougher parts makes for negative art.

“There’s actually a freedom to admitting that there are parts of me I’m nervous to share,” She said. “I want to draw on those and write about them more. I think there’s a strength in that – in the imperfections. They’re what I find most interesting.’’

In other news, The 1975’s Matty Healy apologised to people he’s “hurt” while playing “character role of 21st Century rock star”.

The singer-songwriter expressed regret over his recent behaviour while on stage with The 1975, noting that he has been at the centre of controversy due to “playing pretend”, and trying to embody what he sees as a modern rock attitude.

The band – who have recently announced that they will be taking a hiatus – were also at the centre of controversy after Healy’s comments led to backlash from Rina Sawayama, who dedicated her track ‘STFU’ to him at Glastonbury.

Man Sentenced to Prison for Hate Crime After Arson of Queer Seattle Nightclub

A Washington man accused of arson is facing jail time for committing a hate crime after targeting Queer/Bar, an LGBTQ nightclub in Seattle.

Kalvinn Garcia, 26, pleaded guilty and was sentenced in federal court to serve four years in prison, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced this week. Garcia admitted he targeted Queer/Bar because he was angered after discovering a sign that said “queer,” ultimately setting fire to a dumpster in the alley directly behind the venue on February 24th, 2020.

The investigation was carried out by the FBI Seattle Field Office and Seattle Police Department. According to court documents, Garcia told police, “I think it’s wrong that we have a bunch of queers in society.”

Garcia, who was arrested minutes after igniting the blaze, told a stranger weeks later that he intended to “trap and hurt the people inside” Queer/Bar. There were over 100 people inside the club at the time of the incident.

“Mr. Garcia endangered the lives of more than 100 people because of his hatred for members of our LGBTQI+ community,” said Tessa M. Gorman, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington. “We work diligently with our federal, state and local partners to investigate and prosecute acts of hatred against people because of their sexuality or gender identity. This work is a priority because the effect of these hate crimes can linger in communities and traumatize the members of the targeted community for weeks, months or years after.”

Garcia will also be subjected to three years of supervised release upon the conclusion of his sentence, per the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
