Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser gets asteroid named after her

Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser has had an asteroid named after her by the International Astronomical Union.

Their label, 4AD, announced the naming of the asteroid on their official social media pages on Thursday (September 28). “Yesterday, after 10 years of research, the International Astronomical Union have named the asteroid 2013 TF19, ‘Fraser’, after Elizabeth Fraser,” read the caption posted to the label’s Instagram.

It continued: “It does not pose a threat to humankind and will not collide with Earth for millions of years. It can only be viewed using an advance telescope but luckily is available to see on @nasa’s website.”

They added that the asteroid was discovered on August 31, 2013 by M. Kusiak, M. Żołnowski at Tincana.

4AD also shared a diagram of Fraser’s location in the sky. Check out the post below.

Fans quickly took to the comment section to share their excitement over the asteroid. One user wrote, “Brilliant. She is truly a celestial entity,” while another commented, “I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of anything more appropriate in my life.”

The Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1979 by guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie and later completed by Fraser who was dating Guthrie at the time. The became known for their unique ethereal sound.

Following Heegie’s departure in 1983, the band spent a brief time as a duo before being joined by Simon Raymonde. Fraser’s voice attracted attention due to its celestial sound. The band would go on to influence the likes of Prince, Annie Lennox, Slowdive, Lush, My Bloody Valentine and more.

They signed to 4AD in 1982 and went on to release six albums including the classic LP ‘Heaven Or Las Vegas’. NME previously named ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’ the 28th best album of 1990.

Elsewhere, Fraser and her partner, Damon Reece (Massive Attack, Echo & The Bunnymen), formed a new project named Sun’s Signature and released a self-titled debut EP last year. They recently released ‘Sun’s Signature (Extended)’.

Laufey’s album ‘Bewitched’ breaks records and makes history

Laufey‘s new album ‘Bewitched’ has broken numerous records since it was released last month.

The album broke a record on Spotify, recording the biggest first day for a jazz album on the streamer in history.

It also debuted at Number 23 on the all-genre Billboard 200, marking Laufey’s first appearance on the chart, and is still comfortably sitting in the top 100 almost a month on from release.

The album’s lead single ‘From The Start’ also proved massively successful, clocking up 1 million streams in less than 24 hours upon release and gaining a further 1.75million streams a day since. With that, it has become, currently, the most-streamed jazz song in the world.

Speaking to NME The Cover earlier this year, Laufey explained why she was drawn to explore ideas about love, relationships and romanticising one’s own life on the album.

““I think love makes everyone really silly,” Laufey says. “I remember the first time I went on a date, we had a glass of wine and we kissed and then I left in the rain, and I remember thinking, ‘Oh my god, it’s really like the movies!’”

In a five-star review of ‘Bewitched’, NME wrote: “Claiming space with her take on the music of classical legends of years gone by mixed with something more modern, up on that stage is where Laufey’s destined to be.”

Laufey is set to tour the UK and Europe in 2024. Tickets for the UK shows can be found here, while ticketing for dates in other countries can be accessed here.

At Least 13 Dead as Rescuers Search for More Victims After Nightclub Fire in Spain

At least 13 people have tragically died due to a fire that broke out in a Spanish building that houses multiple nightclubs, the Associated Press reports.

The blaze began Sunday morning around 6am at the Fonda Milagros before spreading to the adjacent Teatre club. It’s the deadliest nightclub fire in Spain since 1990, when 43 people were killed in the city of Zaragoza. At least 24 were also injured.

Firefighters and rescuers in the city of Murcia are reportedly still scouring the clubs’ grounds in search of survivors as of Monday morning. Authorities said that two revelers believed to have been in the building are currently missing.

“The fatalities were all concentrated in a very small area in the Fonda establishment,” a police spokesman said.

According to AFP News, Murcia’s Deputy Mayor, Antonio Navarro, said the city council had ordered the proprietors of Teatre and Fonda Milagros to close each club in January 2022. The company behind them only had a permit to operate the former and not the latter, which was created later, Navarro said.

The cause of the blaze is currently being investigated.

Snavs and John Alto release ‘Headlights’ – Dancing Astronaut

Snavs, the driving force behind Riotville Records, and young Danish talent John Alto have come together for their new track “Headlights.” Snavs, a seasoned DJ and producer, is known for his diverse sound spanning from hardcore metal to indie, paired with 23-year old John Alto’s dark and bass-heavy style.

“Headlights” mesmerizes with a dark progressive house approach, a fusion of female vocals seamlessly intertwined with the duo’s cinematic melodies. The track unfolds with an air of suspense before delving into its core – a deep, rhythmic bass line that evokes a sense of mystery and an urge to move, making it equally suited for introspective moments and bustling dance floors. Its textured sound and intricate production reflect a melding of Snavs’ and Alto’s diverse musical backgrounds. Its a convergence of their talents woven together to create a progressive house track that’s simultaneously evocative and energetic. And decidedly dramatic.

Watch U2 play ‘So Cruel’ for first time since 1992 at Las Vegas Sphere

U2 have played their track ‘So Cruel’ live for the first time since 1992 at the opening of the MSG Sphere venue this past weekend.

On Friday (September 29), the Irish rock band began their Las Vegas residency at the Las Vegas Sphere – a $2.3bn, 18,000 seater sci-fi structure that has 160,000 speakers and a giant wrap-around LED screen. They opened the new venue on the first night of their ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere’ in which they played their 1991 LP in its entirety along with their hits.

Bono and Co. played the track ‘So Cruel’ for the first time in over 30 years towards the third act of their set. “Shall we wake the baby up?,” the band’s frontman asked the crowd.

He continued: “Just thinking the other day that ‘Achtung Baby’ is really our most bloody, brutal, bare-knuckled fight of an album and that’s just psychologically speaking. It hardly ever leaves the bedroom and in that sense, it is our most political album. Side Two begins now.”

Other songs that had their first live debut in a while were ‘Mysterious Ways’ which was last played in 2017, ‘Tryin’ To Throw Your Arms Around The World’ last played in 1993 and ‘Love Is Blindness’, last played in 2006.

The band’s debut residency gig, which opened on the same day that they released their first new song in two years, ‘Atomic City’, was attended by a host of famous faces including Paul McCartney and Snoop Dogg. NME writer Damian Jones also confirmed that Dr Dre and Flavor Flav were at the concert.

In a five-star review of the show, NME said: “Edge previously pointed out that U2 are taking the live concert experience “to the next level” and this opening night does a fine balancing act of doing just that while also ensuring their music remains very much at the forefront. And this is just the start of a stunning residency which will only continue to blossom with each passing night in this city of blinding lights.”

Meanwhile, U2 have spoken about drummer Larry Mullen Jr playing “up a storm” in the studio when recording their new single ‘Atomic City‘, despite being saddled with surgery recovery. Krezip drummer Bram van den Berg is filling in for Mullen Jr at the residency shows in Las Vegas.

In other U2 news, the band recently launched ‘Zoo Station’ – an immersive experience for fans designed ahead of their upcoming shows.

The plans for a 2024 tour not only follow on from the band celebrating their 40th anniversary this year but also come ahead of an upcoming album, which arrives in spring.

Although details on the upcoming album, which will be the band’s 17th studio LP, remain sparse, James have shared that the release will land next April. The upcoming lead single is due to be shared in January.

Currently, the title of the album and exact release date have yet to be shared, however, fans can pre-order the upcoming release here to receive access to the tour pre-sale.

“Deeply proud to announce that we are touring next year to coincide with the release of a rather wonderful new album that we are mixing this week,” said Tim Booth of the new updates.

“The new songs sound belting, and will fit this arena tour. Really looking forward to celebrating with you. Expect a mixture of the expected and unexpected – just like life. Nothing but love”

Bassist Jim Glennie agreed, adding: “We are delighted to announce our 2024 Arena Tour, supported by the wonderful Razorlight. Come and share a night of biggies, rarities and a sizeable chunk of our exciting, next NEW album! See you there folks.”

In other James news, the band recently celebrated their 40th anniversary and kicked off the year with a bang after being honoured at the 2023 Ivor Novello Awards. Here, the Manchester band received the PRS Music Icon Award.

This was later followed by the release of their orchestral double album ‘Be Opened By The Wonderful’, which reached Number Three in the UK charts in June and was followed by a run of festival appearances and sold-out tour dates.

Additionally, earlier this year Booth shared his appreciation for The Beatles during an instalment of NME‘s ‘Soundtrack Of My Life’ series, revealing the band’s ‘Revolver’ album to be the first record he ever purchased.

“It’s a pretty revolutionary record. I think it went over my head at [age] seven. It cost about 22 bob: expensive for a kid, I saved up for it,” he said.

“I remember going into this Virgin and you’d sit on beanbags on the floor, put the headphones on, listen to music and buy an album. And [listening to ‘Revolver’] was like, ‘What the fuck?!’”

BTS’ Jungkook says he’s “grateful” for haters and internet trolls

BTS member Jungkook has spoken about having haters and why he feels grateful towards him in his own way.

Over the weekend, BTS’ Jungkook held the first of three listening parties for his new single, ‘3D’ featuring Jack Harlow, on the platform Stationhead.

During the livestream, as archived on YouTube by fans, listeners could send in questions and comments to the K-pop idol through a live chat feature. One such commenter said they were “looking into [supporting] other idol groups”, which was noticed by Jungkook.

The singer then responded to the comment saying that the commenter was “free to do so”, but that he is “grateful for those who support me”, as translated by Koreaboo. He added that he is aware that “there are plenty of people who don’t like me” but that he “[doesn’t] really care too much about them”.

Later, the singer spoke about how he is actually “grateful for even the malicious comments” in his own way. “It means they’re spending their time on me. I’d consider that some sort of interest. Right? They’re different kinds of fans,” he mused.

“If they had absolutely no interest in me, they wouldn’t. So, I thank them for their time,” Jungkook added. “I don’t like them, though. I don’t have to like them, do I? Of course, I love the ones who love me. I wouldn’t love people who say bad things about me. I work for those who support me.”

Jungkook first teased ‘3D’ when he headlined the 2023 Global Citizen Festival in New York, where he performed his debut solo single ‘Seven’ with Latto. In a four-star review of the track, NME’s Rhian Daly called it “a summer-ready bop that also adds new facets to the singer’s artistry”.

Porno For Pyros delay first tour in 25 years to work on new music

The Perry Farrell-led Porno For Pyros have pushed back their upcoming tour to finish work on new music.

The band took to social media this past weekend to make the announcement, confirming that fans waiting to attend Pyro For Pornos’ first tour in 25 years will have to wait a little longer. The postponement, per the band, will allow them time to finish working on new music to perform during the tour.

“We are beyond thankful for all of your support these last 30 years, and are anxious to celebrate with you. Whilst rehearsing for our first tour in 25 years, we’ve also been in the studio creating new music – that we were hoping to get to you in time for these shows,” the band wrote.

“Unfortunately, we have had to move the dates for the upcoming tour as we were not able to begin our campaign in time. So, we’ve pushed the tour a few months from now, in order for everyone to hear and appreciate the new material that is finally finished.”

Porno For Pyros have yet to announced new tour dates, but have teased that new music will arrive “in the upcoming weeks”. The band have not released music since 1997.

The tour was originally scheduled to kick off on October 8 in Wheatland, California, with stops including Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville and more. The tour will be in celebration of the 30th anniversary of their self-titled album.

Last year, the band reunited on stage for their first time in 26 years at Welcome To Rockville Festival after replacing Jane’s Addiction. They also performed a headline set in Los Angeles, an intimate Lollapalooza after-show, and a main stage set at the Farrell-founded festival.
