Carl Cox's Luxurious New Timepiece is Limited to a Drop of Just 100

Swiss watch manufacturer ZENITH has teamed up with Carl Cox for a collaborative timepiece.

We’re told the techno legend’s new “Defy Extreme” watch features a bevy of lavish specs, including an opulent yellow-gold bezel and chronograph movement of 1/100th of a second. In a clever ode to the legendary DJ’s storied career, the timepiece also features an open dial with chronograph counters in the form of miniature vinyl records.

Cox’s luxurious timepiece does, however, come at a massive premium. The “Defy Extreme” starts at a staggering price of $30,100, so it’s more fitting for a watch collector than your average raver.

Cox’s recent ventures have been eye-popping, to say the least. In January of this year, the techno pioneer launched his own racing team under the umbrella of his Carl Cox Motorsport brand before competing in the Extreme E championship.

He then made history in May when he performed at the Great Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You can watch footage from the dazzling set here.

Those interested in purchasing the “Defy Extreme”—and stomaching its hefty price tag—can find out more about the rare timepiece here.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard announce details of 25th album, ‘The Silver Cord’

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have revealed details of their next studio album ‘The Silver Cord’, which is set for release next month.

The album serves as the band’s 25th overall, and the follow-up to June’s ‘PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation’.

As revealed on the band’s Instagram account, the album will feature seven new songs and be released in two formats: a regular edition and an “extended edition” with longer versions of each song.

The album cover sees the sextet in matching black clothing and red teashade glasses surrounded by keyboards and synthesizers, potentially indicating a return to the electronic sound of songs like 2019’s ‘Cyboogie’.

It is not yet known if any singles will be released from the album prior to its official release on Friday, October 27. View the artwork and tracklist of ‘The Silver Cord’ via the band’s Instagram post below:

‘The Silver Cord’ will be available for pre-order from the band’s Gizzverse webstore on Thursday October 12. The European webstore can be accessed here, while the Australian one can be found here and the North American one here.

In January, the band began 2023 by releasing a nine-hour, 86-track live album entitled ‘Live At Red Rocks ’22’. ‘PetroDragonic Apocalypse’ followed in June, which was pre-empted weeks before with a performance in Tennessee where the band performed in drag in protest of the state law.

Outside of the band, several members of King Gizz have also released new music in 2023. The Murlocs – which features both Ambrose Kenny-Smith and Cook Craig – released their seventh album ‘Calm Ya Farm’ in May. Guitarist Joe Walker, meanwhile, released his second album with his solo project Bullant, ‘Late Life Circ’, on September 1.

Listen to Underworld’s haunting new acapella track, ‘denver luna’

Underworld have today shared a new track, ‘denver luna (acapella)’ – check it out below.

The electronic duo – comprising Karl Hyde and Rick Smith released ‘denver luna (acapella)’ today (September 27) and it follows on from their earlier single of 2023, ‘and the colour red,’ which they debuted first at a gig in Bristol in May along with several other new songs.

A statement describes ‘denver luna’(acapella)’ as “a departure from their universally recognised sound and an intimate insight into Karl [Hyde’s] mind as his stream of consciousness vocal becomes the music.”

Watch the Jon Gorrigan directed video for ‘denver luna’ (acapella) here:

Underworld’s last album was ‘Drift Songs’ in 2019. It came as part of a new project called ‘Drift’ which saw the band release new music, art and text pieces weekly over the course of a year.

Speaking about that album in more detail, the band explained that the project “expands and enhances a selection of the recordings” from the ‘Drift’ project and will see the band release more music in the space of a year than in the course of the last 15 years.

The electronic duo formed in Cardiff in 1980; before ‘Drift Songs’ came ‘Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future’ in 2016. In 2017, they released a reimagined edit of their classic ‘Born Slippy’ for the T2: Trainspotting soundtrack, called ‘Long Slow Slippy’.

Reviewing the band’s collaboration with Iggy Pop for that, NME wrote: “Having both been so integral to the soundtrack and spirit of the original Trainspotting movie, ‘Teatime Dub Encounters’ was borne of an attempted collaboration between Underworld and Iggy Pop to create something special for the sequel T2. For their first meeting, a studio was set up in a hotel room at The Savoy in London and a natural chemistry drove everything from there. It may not have made it for T2, but a beautiful beast of its own came into being.”

This year, Underworld played the two-day London event Junction 2 on July 21. Additionally, they made festival appearances at Coachella, Secret Garden Party and Lowlands.

The 27-song setlist encompassed both new and classic tracks, with a VIP remix of Pretty Lights’ “One Day They’ll Know” making a special appearance. ODESZA also incorporated two songs from their collaborative side project with Golden Features, BRONSON, named “TENSE” and “LEEP MOVING.”

alice.km releases debut EP ‘The Back Beat’ – Dancing Astronaut

Phoenix’s own alice.km is on the up and up thanks to a multi-genre approach to production. Known for her organic house style, her 2-track EP “The Back Beat” finds the young producer dabbling in techno’s darker side of dance.

The titular track “The Back Beat” – plunges listeners into a techno-rich atmosphere complete with pulsing bass lines and haunting vocal chops. The second track on the outting, “Talk To Me,” provides a unique twist, integrating vocal samples from a techno warehouse party interview, adding some cheeky character to the output. While “The Back Beat” introduces a dystopian soundscape, “Talk To Me” juxtaposes its techno foundations with raw, enticing melodies and a slightly irreverent tone.

Metallica’s Lars Ulrich “happy” people “still stream or buy or steal our records”

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has shared that he is pleased that fans are still listening to Metalica music despite how they get their hands on it.

  • READ MORE: Metallica live in Amsterdam: still the greatest heavy metal band around

Back in the early 00s, Ulrich became the face of the anti-Internet music piracy movement after being vocal about the cons of people sharing MP3 files of the band’s music via P2P file-sharing platforms such as Napster.

While appearing as a guest on SmartLess podcast, hosted by actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, the drummer shared that he is happy that people are still listening to Metallica’s music despite how they get it.

“Well, obviously it’s changed quite a bit,” he said. “And in your guys’ industry, some of the same things that we were dealing with 20 years ago are happening. Big picture, and I know this may sound like a little bit of a cop-out, I’m just happy that fucking anybody cares about what we’re doing and shows up to see us play and still stream or buy or steal our records or whatever.”

Ulrich continued: “The engagement itself, I think, is the triumph and the victory. Obviously, it’s way, way harder for a lot of the younger bands nowadays because they don’t get the support of the record companies for basic things — just like gear and tour support. So there is very much of a different thing.”

On April 13, 2000, Metallica filed a lawsuit against Napster and alleged that the file-sharing company was guilty of copyright infringement. Ulrich read testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee and explained how the band’s demo of ‘I Disappear’, a track that was set to be released on the Mission Impossible II soundtrack, was leaked on Napster and argued that it the site was enabling users to exchange copyrighted MP3 files.

The suit was eventually settled in July 2001. The settlement required that the site block any music being shared from artists that did not want their music to be shared.

Metalica have previously said that they have no regrets about their legal battle with Napster.

“The whole Napster thing – it didn’t do us any favours whatsoever”, said guitarist Kirk Hammett while speaking on Swedish TV show Nyhetsmorgon. “But you know what? We’re still in the right on that – we’re still right about Napster, no matter who’s out there who’s saying, ‘Metallica was wrong’. All you have to do is look at the state of the music industry, and that kind of explains the whole situation right there”.

Hammett also said that the band “did not make a difference” after pursuing legal action against Napster.

During an appearance on the podcast Let There Be Talk, hosted by actor Dean Delray, the group’s guitarist discussed the legal dispute. “The amazing thing now is back then, people were saying, ’20 years from now, we’re gonna look back and say, ‘Goddamn it! We did the right thing,’” he said.

“But when people were saying back then we were actually gonna make a difference? We didn’t make a difference — we did not make a difference. It happened. And we couldn’t stop it, because it was just bigger than any of us — this trend that happened that fucking sunk the fucking music industry. There was no way that we could stop it. It was a perfectly human thing that just happened. And what had happened was all of a sudden, it was just more convenient to get music and it was less convenient to pay for it. And there you have it.”

In other news, Metallica are currently on their extensive ‘M72’ world tour. The run of dates comes following their latest studio album ‘72 Seasons’, which was their 11th studio album and followed on from ‘Hardwired… to Self-Destruct’, which arrived in 2016.

Zingara and ALLEYCVT Leave No Stone Unturned In Spellbinding Banger, "REMEMBER ME"

Zingara and ALLEYCVT have joined forces for “REMEMBER ME,” a dubstep banger with a wistful twist.

As the track’s spellbinding keys tiptoe into focus, we’re quickly flung headlong into a much more sinister arrangement where eerie bass slithers through the mix. Hissing through a tense build, it eventually culminates in a drop that’ll send shivers to your toes.

Here, a wriggling arpeggio crawls like a spider in the brain, slicing through ferocious saws that run roughshod over everything in its path. It’s no wonder “REMEMBER ME” went off at last weekend’s Lost Lands Festival, where Zingara and ALLEYCVT performed the new collaboration live.

The track’s lyricism strikes a similarly haunting chord as ALLEYCVT navigates the bittersweet landscape of a lost relationship, refusing to relinquish the cherished memories that bind her heart to the past.

“I’ve been wanting to make a song with ALLEYCVT for a while now so this collab is really special to me,” Zingara said in a press release. “Her energy radiates through her music and getting to bring both of our sounds together for our community is really special.”
