ODESZA Confirmed for Rare NYE Weekend Club DJ Set in Vegas

A rare Vegas musical act will be the architects of the city’s sonic countdown to 2024.

ODESZA have been confirmed to headline New Year’s weekend at Resorts World’s Zouk Nightclub. The superstar electronic music duo, who are beloved for their larger-than-life arena performances, will perform a special DJ set at the club on Friday, December 29th.

ODESZA’s influence in Sin City has historically stemmed from their live performances at large-scale concerts and festivals like Life Is Beautiful. A DJ set in the confines of a Vegas nightclub is extremely rare.

Longtime fans can attest there’s nothing quite like ODESZA’s live performances, which feature a captivating drumline and intricate, stupefying visual production. They’ll forgo many of those frills at Zouk, however, as they perform a more intimate set.

“As one of the biggest party weekends of the year, we are thrilled to be able to provide our guests with this amazing celebration and bring ODESZA’s DJ set to our stage for the first time,” Brent Freed, Zouk Group’s Executive Director of Talent Programming, said in a statement.

You can purchase tickets to the event here. For more on Zouk Nightclub, read about how the venue’s owners are changing the fabric of Vegas nightlife via our in-depth feature.

Eight people arrested after thousands-strong rave in Bristol

Eight people have been arrested in connection with an illegal rave in Bristol.

Avon and Somerset police were called to the event, which took place at a disused warehouse in the Avonmouth area of the city, at around 9:05pm on Saturday (September 23).

A “significant number” of people, possibly exceeding 2,000 at its peak, were found to be attending the unlicensed event. Police shut the event down, engaging with those they believed had organised the rave to “bring it to a safe conclusion” whilst also trying to prevent more people from entering the site.

Five people are suspected to be involved in organising the rave, and were arrested on suspicion of burglary offences. All of them were between the ages of 18 and 30 and all of them live outside of the area. They have now been released on bail.

Three other arrests were made during the police operation, but the individuals concerned are not believed to have been involved in organising the event.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Darren Lipscomb said in a statement: “We have made a number of arrests of people who we believe have travelled vast distances and are suspected of being involved in the organising of this event. Enquiries are ongoing.

“Approximately 20-30 people remained at the site until the music was switched off shortly after noon and the site was cleared.

“We are in contact with the building owner and the property has been secured to prevent further incidents.”

The statement also said that the operation “prioritised public safety” and officers were “conscious of the dangers that having a very large number of people in a confined space can cause”.

Big Gigantic and Ahee drop raucous party starter ‘Oh Dang!’ – Dancing Astronaut

When the funk house icons Big Gigantic collide with the prodigious bass talent AHEE, something groundbreaking was bound to happen. For over a decade, Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken of Big Gigantic have been fusing live instruments with electronic beats, creating a unique blend that’s paved a way for other artists and nearly defined a genre all their own. AHEE, after capturing audiences with acts like The Lucent Dossier Experience, has risen meteorically thanks to a versatility in the studio that is on full display here.

It’s not the first time their sounds have crossed — AHEE’s first big break was back in 2016 during a Big G remix contest where he took second place. Their latest sonic smash cut — “Oh Dang!” is as explosive as the title suggests. Things kick off with a funky 1970s-inspired guitar riff, swiftly escalating into a whirlwind of punchy percussions, bold synths, and nervous system jolting dubstep drops. Like many Big Gigantic tracks, the song feels like a funk-fueled sonic rollercoaster, with peaks of pure electronic-pop, wonky drops, and undeniably grooves.

Hear ‘Oh Dang!’ live at Red Rocks on September 29th and 30th. Grab your tickets right here.

MC Hammer hits back at “one-hit wonder” claims

MC Hammer has hit back at claims that he is a “one-hit wonder”.

Last Friday (September 22) an X (fka Twitter) user told the rapper to stay in his lane after he shared a video from the Academy Of Social Sciences in Australia, as Hot New Hip Hop reports.

“He’s a ‘has been’ who knows fuck all about what is going on in Australia,” the person wrote in a now-deleted post. “He should stick to holding his own government accountable, like the cocaine owner in the White House.”

In response, MC Hammer – real name Stanley Kirk Burrell – said: “Ouuuch! Might I remind you that a ‘has been’ is bigger than a ‘Never Was’ 😂.”

Someone else then chimed in, calling the 61-year-old hip-hop artist a “one-hit wonder” – seemingly referring to his 1990 hit single ‘U Can’t Touch This’. “You have no idea about what you’re wading into,” they added.

The rapper fired back: “I got at least 19 charted hits … which one made you wonder 🤔.”

Later, Chuck D jumped in to defend Hammer. “More importantly I saw 15,000 -20,000 arena people… get exhausted and worn out watching you @mchammer while singing those hits,” he wrote. “Yes NEWGENS it did happen years on end. No myth no hype.”

Hammer replied: “Always appreciate you and our journey @MrChuckD. 🤜🏾👑🤛🏾.” Check out the posts below.

‘U Can’t Touch This’, which samples Rick James’ 1981 single ‘Super Freak’, won Grammys for Best R&B Song and Best Rap Solo Performance. Additionally, the 33rd Grammy Awards saw the track become the first rap song to be nominated in the Record Of The Year category.

Hammer’s other popular songs include ‘2 Legit 2 Quit’ and “Pumps And A Bump’. He has released 11 full-length albums over the course of his career, with the latest being 2009’s ‘DanceJamtheMusic’.

Back in 2020, the California-born artist poked fun at ‘U Can’t Touch This’ in a Cheetos advert that aired during the Super Bowl.

Thy Art Is Murder replace frontman on new album due to “a breakdown in his character and judgement”

Thy Art Is Murder have severed ties with their frontman Chris ‘CJ’ McMahon due to “a breakdown in his character and judgement”.

McMahon joined the Australian deathcore band back in 2009 after their previous vocalist, Brendan van Ryn, quit the previous year.

Last Friday (September 22), Thy Art Is Murder released their sixth studio album ‘Godlike’ via Human Warfare, marking the group’s first full-length release without McMahon. Shortly afterwards, TAIM shared a statement on social media to announce the singer’s departure.

“Our new album Godlike is now available worldwide digitally with an unforeseen change – Chris McMahon is no longer a part of Thy Art Is Murder and does not feature on the record,” the band wrote.

“We understand that this may come as a surprise and we want to assure you that this decision was made to preserve the band’s integrity and direction.”

According to Loudwire, McMahon recently faced criticism after he posted anti-trans content on his social media and commented in support of it. He subsequently shared an apology video via TIAM’s account.

“What transpired over the past month was not the cause of this action, but just another symptom of the drawn out breakdown in his character and judgement,” the group said on Friday. “The straw that broke the camel’s back if you will.”

TAIM went on to say that “the fallout has been immense”, adding: “We were lobbed with threats to destroy Thy Art Is Murder from the inside if we did not capitulate to various ideologies that [McMahon] holds.

“Everyone has their own right to free speech and to seek their truth; they are also free to receive the consequences that come with it. We appreciate your support and respect for our privacy during this challenging time.”

The group then explained: “As we move forward, we are excited to introduce you to a new vocalist, who finished re-recording vocals on the new album earlier this week, and will be joining us for the Godlike European tour with Whitechapel, Fit For An Autopsy and Spite, which kicks off in a few days.

“Our focus remains on delivering powerful music and unforgettable performances to our dedicated fans. We’re grateful for your understanding and continued support as we embark on this new chapter together.”

McMahon has since commented on his dismissal from the band, claiming that he only found out about it through their online statement.

“I just woke up and saw the news,” he wrote. “Yes this is how I found out. And yes it’s not the whole story. I’ll be going live tomorrow at 5PM Sydney, Australia time. Burn everyone to death.”

Thy Art Is Murder are set to hit the road in the UK next month, with headline shows scheduled for London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Bristol. You can find any remaining tickets here.

Listen to (G)I-DLE’s Yuqi’s cover of JVKE’s ‘ghost town’

(G)I-DLE singer Yuqi has released a cover of American singer-songwriter JVKE’s ‘ghost town’.

On September 23, the K-pop singer celebrated her 24th birthday with a cover of JVKE’s ‘ghost town’ and an accompanying visual as a gift to fans. Directed by Yuqi, the music video features her smiling for a camera on a set, though this is revealed to be a mask, and those around her do not notice her unhappiness.

I gotta get out of this ghost town / I gotta move on, gotta get going with my life / ‘Cause everything’s haunted by your ghost now / I gotta move on, I’m sick of this ghost town,” she sings in the chorus.

Yuqi’s ‘ghost town’ clip comes half a year after the singer last shared a cover of Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’, which was also accompanied by its own visual. Last year, the singer also released a cover of Måneskin‘s ‘Beggin’’ for her birthday.

(G)I-DLE are currently gearing up for the release of their first English-language EP ‘Heat’ in collaboration with 88rising, which will arrive on October 5. The quintet have since unveiled its track list, which will be led by the single ‘I Want That’. The song was notably co-written by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. The upcoming record also includes ‘I Do’, which the girl group dropped as a pre-release single back in July.

The release of ‘Heat’ will come after a month-long delay first announced by CUBE Entertainment and 88rising in August in order to “put the final touches on the EP to ensure the best quality for (G)I-DLE’s fans around the world.”

Ozzy Osbourne once asked Corey Taylor if he could be “number 10” in Slipknot

Corey Taylor has recalled the moment he first met Ozzy Osbourne, when the Black Sabbath frontman asked if he could be the tenth member in Slipknot.

The Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman, who recently released his second solo album ‘CMF2‘, was reflecting on how his band got on the line-up at Ozzfest in 1999.

“The reason Slipknot got onto Ozzfest [in 1999] is because we were [Ozzy’s son] Jack’s favourite band,” Taylor shared in a new interview with Classic Rock magazine (via Louder Sound). “Sharon gave us a little more leeway because of that. We did some crazy shit, but she’d be, ‘It’s fine, it’s Slipknot’”.

He went on to recall his first meeting with The Prince Of Darkness. “I was sitting at a table with Jack and Kelly and Sharon,” he said. “All of sudden, Ozzy comes bounding up: ‘Sharon, can you help me with my earrings?’ And Sharon goes, ‘Ozzy, this is one of the members of Slipknot, it’s Corey, he’s the singer.’

“He looks at me and goes, “You’re the guys with nine members? I wanna be number ten!” I was like, ‘Dude, you’re Ozzy, anything you want!’ It was like meeting Superman.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Taylor reflected on meeting his various musical heroes, including Metallica.

“I’ve met them in so many phases of their career,” he said “The first time was when they headlined over Slipknot at a show in the early 2000s. James [Hetfield] and Jason [Newsted] invited us into their dressing room to hang out, and we were in such awe of them that the only thing we could do was raid their food and drink.

“We were like these Dickensian street rats, drinking all their beer and stuffing our pockets. Those guys were watching us, rolling their eyes and laughing.

“When we hung out with the next time, James was sober. I had gotten sober myself, and he said: ‘If you ever need a talk, if you ever need anything, just call me.’ He’s a gracious dude.”

In a recent interview with NME, Taylor also made the revelation that he’s a hardcore Kaiser Chiefs fan.

“Especially that first album, man,” Taylor said of 2005’s ‘Employment’. “It’s really rad and super legit. The more I got into that album, the more it inspired me to write. To this day, I listen to it and really get down with it. I’ve been threatening to do a cover of ‘Modern Way’ for a long time. I’d do a really cool acoustic version of it, which would be really rad.”

In other news, Taylor recently revealed that he began releasing solo music as he felt he wasn’t getting the credit he deserved for writing with his two bands.

In a three-star review of ‘CMF2’, NME said the record was a “fascinating insight into the dichotomy that drives one of the greatest bands of the 21st Century”.

Osbourne, meanwhile, has undergone what he says will be his “final” neck surgery.
