The National’s Matt Berninger on struggling with writer’s block

The National’s Matt Berninger has opened up about struggling with writer’s block.

  • READ MORE: The National – ‘Laugh Track’ review: a heavier companion record

It comes after ‘Laugh Track’, the band’s surprise ninth album arrived in quick succession off the back of April’s acclaimed ‘First Two Pages of Frankenstein’. It was announced earlier this month (September 15) during a concert at their Homecoming Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio. The LP was released three days later on September 18.

Speaking to The Independent, Berninger reflected on having writer’s block for some time, a process that he said would scare him.

“I couldn’t even open a laptop,” he told the publication. “I could barely pick up my phone. Everything symbolised my paralysis. Everything was evidence of failure. So once it started coming back, I thought: I have to keep writing.”

Now, Berninger says he’s protective of his writing time saying that he finds time daily to write. “I go to bed knowing OK there’s still some ink in there, in the well,” he added.

He also revealed that part of his writing process involves sending messages to himself. “I don’t know why I text myself,” he explained. “But it has become such a fluid way of catching the leaves as they fall. Even reaching over and grabbing a notebook by the side of the bed and turning on a light to write it down, I’m going to lose whatever it was.

“I’ve written myself more texts than anybody else…More than my wife! Soon I’ll have to ghost myself,” he joked.

Meanwhile, the band’s Aaron Dessner recently opened up to Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe about their new album ‘Laugh Track’.

“It’s always like this special moment when you realise it’s bouncing off people and it’s cathartic in people’s lives and just songs take on a much different, they always surprise us,” Dessner told Lowe.

He continued: “The life that a song has is unpredictable and that’s the best part of making music, I think, is seeing where it goes. …I’m also thinking you’ve learned how to deal with anxiety and the suffering that’s in your thoughts better and you start to be able to be more in the moment with the process.

“I think we also have been playing really well live all of a sudden. I think these are best shows that we’ve ever played. The whole thing just feels, it feels like a new chapter. I know maybe we say that every time, but this time I really mean it.”

‘Laugh Track’ features various collaborations from Bon Iver on ‘Weird Goodbyes’, Rosanne Cash (daughter of Johnny Cash) on ‘Crumble’ and Phoebe Bridgers on the title track.

In a four-star review of ‘Laugh Track’, NME shared: “The tightness of ‘First Two Pages…’’s singles like ‘Tropic Morning News’ and ‘Eucalyptus’ are somewhat absent, though the looser structures and decision to allow the songs room to grow, melodically and lyrically pays off. In a statement shared with the record, Berninger says the period ‘feels like the shedding of a skin’ and the band walk into the unknown once again for their next creative cycle: a thrilling new chapter will surely emerge.”

Lane 8's "Fall 2023" Mixtape is a Warm Adventure Into Autumn's Sweater Weather

For most, the sounds of fall include rustling leaves, howling wind and slurps from a warm, pumpkin-flavored drink. But for fans of Lane 8’s This Never Happened, the calendar shift towards autumn is signified by the release of a brand-new seasonal mix.

Lane 8’s “Fall 2023 Mixtape” is almost three hours long, packed with his mixing finesse and signature style of uplifting house music. As is par for the course when it comes to these seasonal mixtapes, a number of energizing unreleased tracks are woven through. Tracks from Le Youth, Sultan + Shepard, Tinlicker and many more are featured in this season’s mix.

The influential deep house producer has been spending time with his family this summer instead of playing hit typical slew of shows, working to strike a balance between all of life’s important elements.

“It feels a bit strange to go through almost an entire summer without doing many shows, but I’m just now realizing how much I needed that mental health reset,” Lane 8 wrote on social media.

He also said he’s looking forward to more shows in the next few months, adding that new music “has been rolling again, slowly but surely, and I have a couple new ones I’m excited about.” In the meantime, fans can catch him at an upcoming performance at iii Points Festival in Miami and Dreamstate Festival in SoCal.

You can listen to Lane 8’s full “Fall 2023 Mixtape” below.

MGMT appear to be teasing a new album

MGMT appear to be teasing a new album after fans spotted a post on the band’s subreddit this week.

As reported on Stereogumthe duo’s Andrew VanWyngarden posted a photo of a test pressing on the band’s subreddit (September 21). The image was accompanied by a banana and the text “elf of soils”.

Reddit users were speculating that it could be an anagram of a new album title based on two earlier posts by VanWyngarden – one that suggested a new MGMT album is likely to come out in 2023, the other titled “Just got done cooking L.O.L” (via Pitchfork).

Back in January, MGMT teased a “fancy new album” that they say would be finished and released in 2023.

The New York-based duo last released an album with 2018’s ‘Little Dark Age’, and frontman VanWyngarden promised in 2022 that they would return with new music that year although that didn’t materialise.

However, when they were announced for the Just Like Heaven festival earlier this year (January 17), they gave an update on new music.

Of new music, they said: “Keep checking back in with us because we’ve been making some fun new recordings and have a fancy new album (LOL) that should be finished at some point this year, which is the year 2023.”

Since the 2018 release of ‘Little Dark Age’, the band have been largely quiet, though appeared in feature spots on The Avalanches‘ star-studded recent album ‘We Will Always Love You’ and ColaBoyy’s track ‘Kid Born In Space’.

In that time, VanWyngarden has also shared new music under his solo moniker Gentle Dom, covered Tones and I’s global smash ‘Dance Monkey’ and remixed Metronomy and Club Intl.

Of progress on the new record, he told fans on Reddit last August: “There are irons in the fire and we have been busy. I had forgotten my login info, the mgmt drought ends this year.”

Bootshaus' Beloved Blacklist Festival Poised for Massive Return in 2023

The long-awaited return of Germany’s Blacklist Festival comes with the promise of much more than dark, obsidian bass music.

Returning on October 7th, the beloved bass music festival is the brainchild of the team behind Cologne’s iconic Bootshaus club. That venue has long served as a seedbed for the country’s thriving electronic music culture, and Blacklist has blossomed into one of its tallest trees.

Blacklist in 2015 debuted at Bootshaus as a renegade party before quickly emerging as a fan-favorite among Germany’s electronic dance music faithful. Its proprietors then began to organize monthly branded events at the club, establishing a haven for fans of trap, dubstep and drum & bass.

The Blacklist brand ultimately grew into a powerhouse, landing high-profile stage takeovers at renowned festivals such as Electric Love and Parookaville, among many others. The success of those events ultimately led to the inception of the independent Blacklist Festival in 2019, hosting roughly 7,000 and becoming the largest indoor festival in Germany.

The festival is now heading back to Turbinenhalle, a music and cultural venue on Mülheimerstraße in Oberhausen, with a monster lineup in tow. Fans should ready their neck-braces for the heavy-hitting sounds of Borgore, Zomboy, Sullivan King, Hedex, Holy Goof and many more. They’re poised to throw down across five stages through the wee hours of the morning.

Tickets to Blacklist Festival 2023 start at €60 plus fees. You can find out more and purchase passes here.

Listen to Dolly Parton cover 4 Non Blondes’ ‘What’s Up?’

Dolly Parton has released the latest cover from her upcoming new album – a cover of 4 Non Blondes’ ‘What’s Up?’ Listen to it below.

Parton is currently gearing up to release her 49th solo album ‘Rockstar’, which will be released in November and will feature nine original songs and 21 covers of rock classics including Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’, The Rolling Stones‘ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ and many more.

Recently, Parton shared her cover of The Beatles‘ ‘Let It Be’ featuring Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Mick Fleetwood and Peter Frampton. Parton also previously shared a cover of Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’.

Teaming up with musician Linda Parry too on her latest cover, Parton said in a statement: “First of all, I love Linda Perry. Second of all, I love this song written by Linda. Third of all, I love being a part of this video to try to make people think about what’s going on in this world today. Shout out to the little children that helped with the video! If our children don’t make it, then what will? Again, I ask ‘What’s Up?’ Enjoy.”

The video is directed by Steve Summers and was filmed at Eakin Elementary School in downtown Nashville. You can watch it here:

Perry added in her own statement: “How is one supposed to react when the greatest and most prolific songwriter in the world wants to cover a song YOU wrote? Her version of ‘What’s Up?’ is so good. Her spin on it made me feel like it was her song. No surprise there. Being on set making the video was a comfortable easy experience. The vibe on set was chill and Dolly and I got to catch up and laugh a lot. I could go on and on, obviously I’m a fan.”

Parton recently opened up about why she never let Elvis Presley cover her hit ‘I Will Always Love You’.

Presley had apparently loved the song and expressed interest in recording a cover, but Parton revealed in a new interview with BBC Radio 2 why it never materialised. Parton explained that her decision wasn’t because of Presley, but rather because of a conflict with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

“‘I wouldn’t let Colonel Tom Parker [have the rights to the song],” she clarified. “Elvis loved it. I talked to Priscilla not very long ago – she said, ‘Elvis sang it to me when we were on the courthouse steps after we got divorced’.

“‘He loved the song and wanted to do it. Had it worked up. They’d already called me to come down to the studio and to hear part of the song.”

However, the night before, Parker called Parton and said he wouldn’t do anything with Presley unless he had the publishing rights, and when Parton refused to give up the copyright for the song, he said he couldn’t agree to her terms.

‘I Will Always Love You’ reached new levels of popularity when Whitney Houston recorded her own version in 1992 for the film The Bodyguard.

Watch Ultra Music Festival Transform Into "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" in 2023 Aftermovie

Someone tell Rockstar Games to scrap whatever they have for GTA VI and make this instead.

Each year, the minds behind Ultra commission an aftermovie to showcase the festival’s many mind-blowing sights and sounds. While there have been some incredible recaps in recent years, their latest might just be their best yet.

Taking cues from Rockstar’s iconic Grand Theft Auto franchise is ULTRA: VICE CITY, the official Ultra Music Festival Miami 2023 aftermovie. Produced by Final Kid Films and inspired by the fourth entry in the trailblazing game series, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the audiovisual is brilliantly styled to mirror the seminal 2002 video game.

Ultra Music Festival

Kicking off with its main character dressed in the same clothing as the game’s protagonist, the camera pans out to reveal UI elements similar to what you would see in GTA. You’re then shown cutscenes that send the star on missions to help Fedde Le Grand and Oliver Heldens between clips from some of the biggest DJ sets of the festival.

The final result is a treat for fans of the game and the iconic dance music festival. There’s plenty of footage of Ultra Miami’s stages mixed in with nerdy easter eggs.

Watch Chad Smith play Thirty Seconds To Mars’ ‘The Kill’ as he hears it for the first time

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith was challenged to play along to Thirty Seconds To Mars‘ ‘The Kill’, having never heard it before.

The challenge was presented by Drumeo as part of its For The First Time series, and Smith took it on with ease, seeming to know instinctively where the song was going next even though he didn’t know it, neither who the artist was.

When he’d finished, Smith asked: “What the fuck was that? Is that like My Chemical Romance or something?” When the host asked him if he knew the song, Smith shook his head “no” and responded, “It’s some kind of emo thing.”

He had heard of Thirty Seconds To Mars, however – “Ahhh! Jared’s band. Jared Leto. His brother [Shannon] is the drummer,” he said when he was told who the artist actually was.

Check out Chad Smith playing ‘The Kill’ below:

In other Chili Peppers news, WWE hall of famer X-Pac has revealed that he rejected having the band do his wrestling theme song.

“Shane McMahon comes up to me and goes, ‘Hey, we’re thinking about having Red Hot Chili Peppers do your new theme music,’” he told Van Vliet, “and I go, ‘No, I want Uncle Kracker!’”

After being asked if the Red Hot Chili Peppers were really “in line” to record the track, X-Pac replied: “When they say something like that, and especially at that point that where WWE was, we were pretty hot.”

He continued: “I was the one that picked Uncle Kracker, because I knew him, and that’s kinda how I was at the time.”

Meanwhile, Thirty Seconds To Mars released a new album, ‘It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful Day’, last week (September 15), featuring the singles ‘Seasons’, ‘Get Up Kid’, ‘Stuck’ and ‘Life Is Beautiful’.

GRiZ Dropped an "ID Bible" With 24 Filthy Tracks From His Live Sets

GRiZ is EDM’s gift that keeps on giving.

The beloved funk and bass music producer has released a behemoth bundle of new tracks to tide fans over ahead of an indefinite hiatus starting in October. GRiZ released a statement this summer to announce his impending break from touring, citing a desire to spend more time with friends and family.

Dubbed “ID Bible,” the new collection features 24 tracks, all of which are remixes or edits from GRiZ’s live sets. His ingenuity is crystal-clear right off the rip with “Supersonic,” a searing song that interpolates samples from Ciara’s “1, 2 Step” and Lana Del Rey’s “Jealous Girl.”

What follows is a remarkable showcase of one of the most gifted selectors in bass music. Highlights in the relentless song-cycle include the filthy riddim cut “Who TF Is GRiZ” and a pair of squelching dubstep bangers, “Let Him Cook” and “Interdimensional.”

Elsewhere, GRiZ returns to his funkstep roots with the effervescent “Infinite Bloom,” weaving a stunning latticework of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s aching “Innerbloom” vocals and his signature sax patterns. Fans itching for a bit more swing should look no further than the wonky “Glitch Hop Is Dead” and “Zoom,” a toe-tapping tech house track sampling the ageless horns of Jay-Z’s “Show Me What You Got.”

The best part? Considering GRiZ notated the playlist’s folder with a “1,” fans are safe to expect more to follow. Check out GRiZ’s first “ID Bible” in-full below.

“His quotes are just off the charts”

Will Arnett has shared who he prefers between Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher.

The actor, who is best known for roles in Arrested Development and BoJack Horseman, was asked to choose his favourite Gallagher brother by a fan during an appearance on Johnny Vaughan’s 4-7 Thang on Radio X.

In response, Arnett said: “I know that they’re both friends of the programme and I’ve heard them both on the programme, so I don’t want to pick sides, but I did hang out one evening for a couple of hours with Noel… I think Noel because his quotes are just off the charts. Unbelievable.”

When Vaughan said Liam’s quotes were on “a different level”, Arnett replied: “Than Noel’s? He once described his brother as a man with a fork in a world of soup. Come on!”

Noel’s quote referenced by Arnett stems from an interview in 2009. Ten years later in 2019, Liam shared a video of himself eating soup with a fork, where he also addressed his brother’s views on Scotland after he called it “a third world country”.

“By the way, Scotland [is a] beautiful country, the people are magnificent,” Liam said. “Get yourself up there. I am he, you are he, you are me and we are all together.”

Arnett is currently promoting Peacock series Twisted Metal, where he voices the character Sweet Tooth. The series is based on the PlayStation games of the same name.

The actor also stars in Taika Waititi’s upcoming film Next Goal Wins, alongside Michael Fassbender, Oscar Kightley, Elisabeth Moss and David Fane. The film is set for release in cinemas on November 17, 2023.

Oasis’ B-sides album ‘The Masterplan’ will be released in new formats on November 3 to commemorate the record’s 25th anniversary, including CD, cream cassette and limited-edition double vinyl.

Released in 1998, the original album was a compilation of B-sides from singles across Oasis’ first three albums, ‘Definitely Maybe’ (1994), ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory’ (1995) and ‘Be Here Now’ (1997).
