Ezra Collective win the 2023 Mercury Prize for ‘Where I’m Meant To Be’

Ezra Collective have won the 2023 Mercury Prize for their album ‘Where I’m Meant To Be’.

The jazz collective were outsiders to clinch the prize going into tonight’s (September 7) ceremony beating off favourites Jockstap, Loyle Carner and Young Fathers at London’s Eventim Apollo.

Jamz Supernova presented the collective with the prize and they were greeted with red confetti as they reached the stage.

Accepting the trophy, Femi Koleoso, said: “Wow first of all let me thank God because if a jazz band winning the Mercury Prize doesn’t make you believe in God I don’t know what will.”

He went on to thank the band’s manager and his mum and dad before adding: “Ezra Collective represents something very special because we met in a youth club. What we’re celebrating right is testimony to good special people, for putting in effort for young people to play music.

“This is not just a result for Ezra Collective, for UK jazz but it’s a special moment for every organisation across the country ploughing their efforts and time into young people that play music.”

The collective earlier played their track ‘Victory Dance’ and got up to perform the track for a second time after after accepting the award.

All of the artists performed live on the night apart from Fred Again.. and the Arctic Monkeys who are currently both on tour. Instead, Fred Again..’s performance of ‘Delilah (pull me out of this)’ from this year’s Glastonbury was shown and Arctic Monkeys’ performance of ‘There’d Better Be A Mirrorball’ on Later… With Jools Holland from earlier this year was screened.

The list is completed by RAYE‘s ‘My 21st Century Blues’, J Hus‘ ‘Beautiful And Brutal Yard’, Olivia Dean‘s debut album ‘Messy’, Shygirl‘s ‘Nymph’, Arctic Monkeys’ ‘The Car’ and Irish folk band Lankum‘s fourth LP ‘False Lankum’.

500 People Apprehended on Suspicion of Trawling, Robbery at Massive EDM Concert in Brazil

More than 500 people were apprehended at Alok’s massive “Show of the Century” in Brazil after being suspected of trawling and robberies, Jovem Pan News reports.

The Brazilian dance music superstar celebrated his birthday as well as Copacabana Palace’s 100th anniversary in tandem with the show, which took place on August 26th. A record-breaking crowd of one million saw him perform atop a remarkable 100-foot, pyramid-shaped stage with interactive drones and fireworks.

The detainees were reportedly found with over 150 “sharp objects,” which were seized at inspection points. These include knives, pliers, stilettos and scalpels. 17 adults were formally arrested, per local police.

It’s important to note that engaging in trawling—the act of dragging a large net behind a boat to catch everything in its path, including marine mammals—goes against Alok’s mission for environmental sustainability. Together with the Brazilian renewable energy company 2W Ecobank, the DJ offset the event’s CO2 emissions by neutralizing them through clean energy certificates and carbon credits, according to a press release shared with EDM.com.

Trawling actively destroys the ocean’s ecosystems, creating a chain reaction of environmental disasters. Festivals like Alaska’s Sacred Acre, which returns to the Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds of Ninilchik this weekend, function as seedbeds for music fans to stay educated on conservation.

“The goal is to stay moving within the same goal and share a ‘hive mind’ to make a difference,” Sacred Acre’s assistant director, Hannah Stearns, told EDM.com. “We want people to come out with a fuller cup and feel genuine care and support, knowing that the power of music can influence change.”

“Where you’re meant to be”

The world of music has been reacting to Ezra Collective‘s 2023 Mercury Prize victory for their album ‘Where I’m Meant To Be’.

The jazz group were declared the overall winner of the prestigious award earlier tonight (September 7) after beating off competition from fellow favourites Jockstap, Loyle Carner and Young Fathers at a live ceremony at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith.

Jazz FM were one of the first to congratulate the band as were Rough Trade who wrote: “Where you’re meant to be. Big up @EzraCollective, @MercuryPrize 2023 champions. The ever-eclectic image of what British jazz should be has been nurtured in your capable hands. Can’t wait for what’s next.”

The Mayor Of London’s Culture team also went on to congratulate the collective as did Chair of the BMA Racial & Ethnic Equality Forum, Chaand Nagpaul who wrote: “Delighted @EzraCollective is first ever jazz band to deservedly win Mercury Prize 2023,” before he shared a clip of the band performing live earlier this year.

Many fans also hailed the victory with one writing: “Ezra Collective winning the Mercurys is SUCH a good result. New London jazz scene has needed some recognition for so long.”

Another added: “Yesssss Ezra! Knew you could do it! Congratulations on winning the #Mercuryprize you deserve all the glory for what you do with you music.”

One other fan wrote: “I’m literally speechless this is amazing, a contemporary jazz band winning the Mercury prize, get in!”

Speaking about their victory on the night, the Mercury Prize judging panel also said: “It wasn’t easy to choose an overall winner from such an eclectic and exciting list, but ultimately the judges were unanimous: Ezra Collective, the London five-piece made up of Femi Koleoso on drums, TJ Koleoso on bass, Joe-Armon Jones on keys, James Mollison on saxophone and Ife Ogunjobi on trumpet are a living argument for putting the hours in, achieving musical brilliance, and tapping into a joyous spirit that ensures their album is as fun as it is impressive.

“The British jazz renaissance of the past decade has been one of the most significant developments in modern music. Now, ‘Where I’m Meant To Be’, with its touches of reggae, soul, Latin and Afrobeats, its call and response riffs and rhythmic intensity, is a landmark not only for jazz, but for contemporary music in general.”

Chris Lake Responds After Idiotic Clubber Hurls Drink, Soaks Him During DJ Set

Chris Lake is the latest victim of a bewilderingly stupid trend where audience members hurl objects at artists while they perform.

The house music superstar recently performed at DAER Nightclub in South Florida, where his set took an unexpected turn after a moronic fan flung a drink toward the stage. The cup soared over Lake’s head, but not before soaking the DJ, who took a moment to wipe his face as well as the club’s decks.

In June, Bebe Rexha was rushed offstage and left with a black eye after a concert-goer pegged her with a cellphone. A month later, someone attending a Cardi B concert threw a drink at the rapper, who retaliated by hurling her microphone. Harry Styles was also clocked in the face with an object during a performance in Vienna this summer.

Lake ultimately took to X (formerly Twitter) to bemoan the incident and call out the “prick” behind it.

“Was going to play longer until that prick flung that drink, so instead I wrapped up on time and bounced,” Lake wrote. “Still had a great time though. Everyone else was epic. Why anyone thinks it’s a good idea to throw things like that is beyond me.”

A man then responded in the thread, claiming to be the culprit and rejoicing in the fact that the incident was caught on video.

“Haha that was me and my boy,” wrote the clownish clubber. “I am weakkk.”

The 1975 have added new dates to their 2024 UK and European ‘Still At Their Very Best’ tour.

Due to popular demand during this week’s presale, extra dates have been added at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro on August 8 when the tour will now kick off, London’s O2 on the 14 and Manchester AO Arena on the 17.

Tickets go on general sale for all UK dates from tomorrow (September 8) at 10am BST from here. You can view the full list of new dates below.

A European run will then follow in Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Oslo, Copenhagen, Berlin, Milan and many more, before they wrap up at the Palladium in Cologne, Germany on March 22.

Speaking to NME last year in their cover interview around the release of fifth album ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’, frontman Matty Healy said the ‘At Their Very Best’ tour name was inspired by their growth as a band.

“When I made ‘A Brief Inquiry…’, we’d grown up a bit,” he said. “The idea of The 1975 continuing to grow up wasn’t a fear because it wasn’t unsexy. Now it’s kind of the sexiest thing about us. That’s why the tour is called ‘At Their Very Best’. We’ve got our shit sorted.”

The 1975 ‘Still… At Their Very Best’ UK & Europe 2024 tour dates are:

FEBRUARY
8 – Glasgow, UK, OVO Hydro

It was also recently confirmed that the band will stage the world’s first “carbon removed” live event at The O2 in London.

The incentive was announced earlier this week, when organisers at the venue confirmed that they would be hosting the world’s first carbon-removed arena events at the beginning of 2024, and The 1975’s live shows will be the first gigs to be held under the new format.

Mac DeMarco on why he hates guitar pedals

Mac DeMarco has explained his hate for guitar pedals, calling them “cheap pieces of shit”.

During a recent Music Tech cover story, the Canadian singer-songwriter/producer spoke about his dislike of running instruments and sounds through effects.

The article notes that DeMarco travelled with a collection of gear worth over $20,000 (£16,050) while he was making his latest instrumental album, ‘Five Easy Hot Dogs’. He told the outlet that a Minimoog synthesiser served as “the lead singer of the record”, adding: “I’m so glad I took him along.”

However, DeMarco said that he is moving away from using effects pedals on his music. “I have a lot of nice shit; nice tape machines and synthesizers, nice guitars, you know,” he explained. “But I think that less is more for me at this point.”

The artist went on to say he “didn’t use a computer to record until probably like 2016 or 17”, and that he would sometimes use effects at that time.

“And, at first, I was like, ‘OK, here we go – we’ll put this effect on here, we’ll do this, we’ll do this…’,” DeMarco said. “And pretty quickly, I realised I should just really limit myself.

Mac DeMarco. CREDIT: Press

“I don’t know, I like getting the sound at the microphone… Instead of buying more gear, I’d rather just move the mic around or record in a different room. That’s what is more interesting to me now.”

As for guitar pedals specifically, DeMarco described the devices as “stupid” and “cheap pieces of shit with crappy electronics”.

“It’s just crap in the path. I don’t like crap. I don’t care if it makes you sound like Jimi Hendrix or whatever. I don’t want it,” he continued. “I don’t want it! It just stresses me out thinking about it.

“And the cables that people use in between them. Oh, man. And then the power – crappy. Everything’s crappy. It’s just crappy. And I don’t want them crapping up my shit. No crap.”

DeMarco conceded that he is using a limited pedalboard tuner at his current live shows, which consists of a tuner, a vibrato pedal and an impulse response effect for his acoustic guitar.

But he reiterated hate for the “sound-goodizer” pedals on the market. “Yeah, no more pedals,” the musician said. “All the pedals should be put in a big pile and we should light ‘em on fire.”

Speaking to NME this summer, DeMarco opened up about his changing musical direction as well as touring and past antics, saying that “maybe finally I’m growing up”. You can watch the full video interview above.

Back in June, DeMarco clarified that he will not be retiring from music.
