Following the release of the much-awaited track “Sexy House Thang,” we had the pleasure of catching up with NexGen Music label boss D.J.C. Our conversation delved into the creative process behind the latest release and explored what’s in store for him and NexGen Music in the coming months.
Celebrating “Sexy House Thang”
First and foremost, congratulations are in order for D.J.C. and his team on the release of “Sexy House Thang.” This vibrant track has captivated audiences, not only with its sound but also with the animated visuals that accompany it.
D.J.C. shared his excitement, saying, “Thank you for the kind comments, and yes, it has definitely been a ride working on the ‘Sexy House Thang‘ release, and it’s a journey that isn’t completely done and dusted yet.” The collaboration with legendary underground music artist Neil Sanford, aka Earth Leakage Trip, brought both fun and challenges.
The creative process was intense, with many iterations before landing on a direction that felt right. As D.J.C. aptly put it, “you pretty much never end up 100% happy with your work!”
Beyond “Sexy House Thang”
When asked about upcoming projects, D.J.C. revealed another high-profile project titled “Crazy Youth,” released just one week after “Sexy House Thang.” Collaborating with UK-based artists Rob Sparx who also runs Migration Recordings and author Upriza (Kelso Simon), this anthem for the UK anti-gun and knife crime movement has already garnered significant attention.
The video, shot on location at Leicester Unity Boxing Club (UK), features a special appearance from WBO champion Lyon Woodstock. It’s also supported by Gloves Up Knives Down, a UK-based non-profit enterprise committed to supporting young people affected by knife crime.
D.J.C. even played a cameo role in the video, a role that allowed him to make a strong statement on gun and knife crime. A follow-up behind-the-scenes video and further insights into the project are expected in the coming weeks.
NexGen’s New Strategy
NexGen Music’s approach to music is evolving. They have reduced their release schedule to 4-6 significant projects per year, focusing on high-quality and engaging visual content. The goal is to grow their audience without alienating fans as they explore various genres from deep and dark underground music to cross-mainstream and even pop.
D.J.C. summed it up, saying, “So, the short answer to my long-winded response (lol) is that we anticipate dropping a couple more music/video projects this year exploring our ‘NexGen’ take on RnB and UK Garage, with perhaps some more Drum and Bass sprinkled in.”
Looking into the Future
With over 30 years of musical exploration, D.J.C. has grand plans for 2024, including a release project for “Sexy House Thang” and possibly an LP featuring some of his extensive collection of musical sketches.
Beyond his own music, D.J.C. is committed to building and investing in artists through the NexGen Music platform. There’s a particular interest in nurturing US-based talent, a move that aligns with his belief in the importance of good chemistry with artists.

Dancing Astronaut‘s annual, end-of-summer trip to Randalls Island is just a few days away. Those that live in and around the greater New York City area can attest to waiting for Labor Day Weekend all year long. But not entirely because of the fact it’s an extended holiday weekend, but because the city’s dance music festival makes it return to the unofficial sixth borough. As always—however—we couldn’t let Electric Zoo get underway without running through its schedule to hand pick a few names that have a convincing argument to be on everyone’s weekend agenda.
Although we had to hold on just a little longer than usual for Electric Zoo’s initial lineup reveal, it wasn’t without cause, with the now Avant Gardner-owned festival dropping the curtain on the largest lineup in its decade-plus history. Electric Zoo completely overhauled its stages for its Hyperspace theme for 2023, introducing The Covergence—the festival’s mainstage—The Continuum—its dedicated bass stage—The MegaMirage—the sole stage that will occupy the expanded area on the site’s northern side and hosted by The Brooklyn Mirage—and Morphosis, and The Landing.
But just like with any king-sized lineup, it also comes as a double-edged sword considering we had to somehow narrow down the list of artists to those that we’re actually hoping to witness in person during Labor Day Weekend. And those names span across several genres and stages that will soundtrack Electric Zoo: Hyperspace, including five Dancing Astronaut Artists to Watch in 2023 in HoneyLuv, Nikademis, Nostalgix, Volaris back-to-back Paige, and Mau P, as well as Dancing Astronaut‘s 2020 Breakout Artist of the Year Moore Kismet, Blanke, CamelPhat, and lastly, the debut of John Summit and Dom Dolla‘s Everything Always project.
Named one of Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2023, HoneyLuv has continuously reaffirmed the exact reasoning behind why she earned that title, making her DJ debuts at everywhere from Tomorrowland to Coachell—where she shared the Yuma Tent stage with Idris Elba—also stacking up collaborations alongside Seth Troxler, Harry Romero, and more along the way. And on the opening afternoon of Labor Day Weekend, HoneyLuv will help break in Electric Zoo’s newly designed, The Brooklyn Mirage-hosted stage The MegaMirage with an hour of scorching tech-house, making for a straightforward decision on how to begin the weekend stint on Randalls Island as part of Chris Lake and Fisher’s Under Construction stage billing.

Those that were in attendance at Electric Zoo’s The Hilltop stage back in 2021 are more than aware that Blanke should be part of their Labor Day Weekend plans two years later. His musical scorecard this year simply adds to the overwhelming consensus he’s one of dance music’s most well-rounded, versatile producers—stacking up “Used To Loving You,” an official release of his “Laserbeam” ÆON:EDIT for Ray Volpe, “Talk To You,” a two-part Deadbeats EP, and most recently “Drift”—and it goes without saying that The Continuum and its Brooklyn Mirage-like stage design should be the place to be as the sun begins to set on day one.

There counterargument to claiming that Mau P is one of the most in-demand names in dance music at this moment of time is nonexistent. Another one of Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2023, Mau P has already checked off two of the year’s most-requested IDs—”Gimme That Bounce” and “Metro”—and made the rounds at EDC Las Vegas, Tomorrowland, and plenty more. And he’s still got more fan-favorite IDs in the tank like “Beats From The Underground” as well as an incoming take on Swedish House Mafia’s “Ray Of Solar” that are enough reason alone to make him worth seeing when he debuts at Electric Zoo’s The Mega Mirage on the latter half of day one.

Day two of Electric Zoo: Hyperspace begins at The Continuum with none other than yet another one of Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2023, Nikademis. Having consistently proven to be one of bass music’s most promising names with recent originals through Ophelia Records and festival slots at Elements Music Festival, Nikademis is an easy guarantee that Electric Zoo’s dedicated stage for bass music will begin on the highest of high notes as Labor Day Weekend gets in full swing.

Our second day on Randalls Island this Labor Day Weekend continues with another familiar face to both Dancing Astronaut‘s end-of-year accolades and the Electric Zoo lineup: Moore Kismet. The Dancing Astronaut Breakout Artist of the Year alumni will trade in The Landing from their 2022 set to The Continuum this time around, bringing along 2023 remixes like their reimagining of Noisia and Skrillex’s “Horizon,” 2023 originals like “Run Away!,” their debut album UNIVERSE, and—of course—a handful of yet-to-be released IDs like an incoming crossover with EVAN GIIA. With a late-afternoon appearance on Randalls Island, Moore Kismet is about to cash in on a second year in a row being a part of Dancing Astronaut’s can’t-miss sets at Electric Zoo.

Electric Zoo’s second day of its Hyperspace edition has no shortage of quality options to wind down the evening with. But CamelPhat are back on Randalls Island for a second year in a row just a couple of weeks before they turn in Spiritual Milk, their sophomore long-form release. And with the promise of unreleased album music in tandem with the likely jaw-dropping production that The MegaMirage will have to offer, CamelPhat have about as convincing of a case as possible to be the artist that earns the right to soundtrack our final moments of Electric Zoo day two.

The third and final day of Electric Zoo: Hyperspace offers yet another name from Dancing Astronaut‘s list of Artists to Watch in 2023. And that’s Volaris, who returns to New York City after making his Big Apple debut back in June as part of John Summit’s Off The Grid takeover at Brooklyn Mirage. But Volaris won’t be traveling to Randalls Island alone, appearing alongside Paige to add to what’s already about to be a momentous debut at Electric Zoo. With a high-quality string of 2023 originals like “I’m So Weak,” “Hand Of God,” “Aqua,” “Lifted,” and “Don’t You Know” combined with the house stylings that Paige will bring along with him, Volaris back-to-back Paige is nothing short of a must-see performance this Labor Day Weekend.

The fifth and final member of Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2023 to join Electric Zoo’s 2023 lineup is none other than Nostalgix. Beginning the year with a sold-out headlining debut in Los Angeles, Nostalgix has gone on to make the rounds at Beyond Wonderland, EDC Las Vegas, and Tomorrowland—with an appearance at Lost Lands still on the schedule—Nostalgix has unfailingly defended her placement in our annual list of dance music’s blooming A-listers, also adding sonic showings on Confession, Barong Family, as well as a recent meeting with EVAN GIIA to her 2023 credit. With an absolutely mesmerizing, spaceship-themed design teased for The Convergence stage towering behind her, Nostalgix is truly a must on the third and final day of Electric Zoo.

Would it really be a list of Dancing Astronaut‘s can’t-miss sets at Electric Zoo 2023 without debatably the single most intriguing pairing on the lineup and the finale act at The MegaMirage? Not at all. John Summit back-to-back Dom Dolla are both heading back to New York City following sold-out evenings at The Brooklyn Mirage earlier in the year to introduce Everything Always. Summit and Dom Dolla—who have each worn Dancing Astronaut‘s Breakout Artist of the Year crown in 2021 and 2019, respectively—have shared the decks more than a few times in the past couple of years but they made things official when they gave it an official name—which doubles as the name of their new event series—when the Electric Zoo lineup was initially revealed. While we can only hope a proper collaboration between them will be a part of their two-hour tracklist come September 3, we already know their stint at The MegaMirage has all the makings to be a picture-perfect ending to Electric Zoo and one of house music’s most memorable back-to-back pairings in a long time.

King Krule has shared a new live film, comprised of footage from his recent run of intimate live shows. Check it out below.
The new live film is the first release from the English singer, songwriter and rapper since his highly-anticipated album, ‘Space Heavy’, and follows his recent time on the road.
Directed and shot by filmmaker Anna Pollack, the film is titled You’ll Never Guess What Happened Next, and features an array of performances held across the musician’s 2023 tour dates, as well as behind-the-scenes footage.
It comes after King Krule performed a handful of intimate stripped-back live shows across Europe and America as part of the ‘SHHHH Tour’ earlier this year, alongside bandmates Ignacio Salvadores (Saxophonist) and George Bass (Drummer).
Live recordings of seven songs from the show at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett are compiled together, with rare behind-the-scenes footage from the band’s time in New York.
Coming in at nearly 30 minutes long, it also features a setlist including recent tracks ‘Tortoise of Independency’, ‘Seaforth’, ‘Pink Shell’ and ‘If Only It Was Warmth’, ‘(Don’t Let the Dragon) Draag On’ and ‘Perfecto Miserable’ from critically acclaimed ‘Man Alive!’ and an unreleased new track ‘Whaleshark’.

King Krule – real name Archy Ivan Marshall – released his fourth studio album earlier this year, shortly after he wrapped up his ‘SHHHH’ tour, which saw him perform across the US and Europe.
The 15-track LP soon became critically acclaimed, and NME awarded it four stars, writing: “This collaborative foray successfully breaks new ground in terms of Marshall’s solo work, further ensuring that ‘Space Heavy’ will assume a lofty standing in King Krule’s already glowing discography.”
It continued: “No doubt, then, that Lucas Hedges will be among the many eagerly adding this record to their collection.”
Going forward, King Krule continues his extensive live tour across the US, UK, and Europe, celebrating the release of the new album. He also added a new date in Paris at Elysee Montmartre, set to take place on 9 November, as well as further headline shows in LA, London, Amsterdam, Paris and more. More than two years later, Massane has another long-form release to his credit. Shortly after heading to Rothbury at the end of June, Massane followed his Electric Forest showing with the revelation of his Another Dawn successor on This Never Happened, By The River. And its rollout immediately commenced with “Trust” alongside Benjamin Roustaing—who Massane had already met with once in 2023—with “Cryo” alongside Dancing Astronaut Artist to Watch in 2023 Grigoré as well as “Dérive” with Margane trailing closely behind. Just shy of three months after its original reveal, By The River has now arrived in full.
When initially announcing By The River, Massane explained that he found himself sourcing beyond his routine inspiration of nature, instead channeling “creative energy from both the vibrant people and pulsating dancefloor” from his North American circuit that enabled him to “explore new horizons and connect with diverse communities” that would “[infuse his] art with fresh perspectives and renewed energy.”
And that newfound creative renaissance had been palpable on By The River since its initial trio of previews, with Massane adding nine more album cuts—including assistance from the likes of Frankie Polari, 28mm, and Gary Hag—that see the Frenchman balance a more kinetic hue of melodic house at times while still maintaining some of the classic identity of his calming style. Billie Eilish played an intimate live show in London and paused the set multiple times to help fans who were struggling in the crowd.
The last-minute surprise gig was held at the Electric Ballroom venue in Camden last night (August 29) and saw the pop star play to a packed audience, tease rarities and bring out special guests.
Eilish announced details of the show on Saturday (August 26) — the day after she headlined the opening night of Leeds Festival, and just before she closed Reading 2023. Unsurprisingly, tickets sold out almost instantly, and some fans even camped outside the venue the night before.
However, those lucky enough to snatch tickets soon clamoured to get as close to the artist as possible, resulting in the set being brought to a halt multiple times.
The first instance came during the third track of her 20-song setlist, ‘Therefore I Am’, when Eilish paused twice mid-performance, to check on members of the crowd and urge members of security to pass out water.
“Can we get some water for these folks?” she asked, looking around for members of staff to help the eager audience. “Like where is security? Am I security now?”

“I haven’t played a small venue in literally six years. I’ve forgotten how to do this… I’m having an anxiety attack right now,” she continued, looking around with concern as crammed audience members asked her for water. “This felt like a good idea… Once. You guys look like you’re gonna die, take a step back.”
This was the first of multiple times the singer stopped the show out of concern for fan safety, later criticising the supposed lack of security in the venue.
“Fucking jeez Louise. No one is answering me,” she shouted into the microphone later in the set after asking if anyone could supply water to the struggling crowd members.
“It’s been a minute since we’ve done this,” she said, again insisting everyone take a step back before she continued the set. “Who needs an inhaler? I feel like I’m babysitting. Do you feel ok for me to keep going?”
In the set, Eilish played multiple fan-favourites, including ‘bad guy’, ‘Happier Than Ever’ and ‘bury a friend’, as well as teasing lesser-played tracks including ‘My Boy’.
Highlights of the set came when the artist invited not just one but two special guests onto the stage for a collaboration. The first of which was singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer, Labrinth, who joined the 21-year-old for a rendition of their track ‘Never Felt So Alone’.
The second came just two tracks later, when Eilish brought Boygenius to the stage for a performance of ‘When The Party’s Over’.
Elsewhere in the show, Eilish also told fans about her first-ever headline show in London, and the difference between playing huge festivals compared to the smaller venues. For the latter, she also admitted that although she finds it “terrifying” to play to such a small audience, she plans to embark on a tour of exclusively small venues at some point in the future.
The concert at Electric Ballroom was a stark contrast to the headline sets she played at Reading & Leeds Festival over the weekend.
At the Sunday set at Reading 2023, NME gave Eilish four stars for her closing performance at the three-day event, describing the performance as one that “cements [her] place as a festival legend”.

It was a wet and wild celebration a decade in the making as Splash House closed out its milestone tenth season in Palm Springs. The pool party-festival hybrid was thrown a major curveball this year as Tropical Storm Hilary forced event organizers to leave its famous poolside setting on the final day of the weekend.
However, the threat of rain and the unprecedented nature of this historic storm did not hold much weight to the hundreds of partygoers eager to leave it all on the dancefloor.
From the trio of hotels to the after-hours air museum offerings, Splash House reigned supreme across the desert resort town while ominous clouds hovered throughout the weekend.
With this being the popular SoCal event’s decennium festivities, the roster of talented tastemakers was on another level. The final Splash House of 2023 started off strong as Chris Lake, Lubelski, and Franklyn Watts descended upon the Friday night afterhours soiree at the Palm Springs Air Museum.
On Saturday, guest excitement was firing on all cylinders across all three host hotels. Whether that be from the first official day of pool activities or the possibility of rain canceling the second half of the festival, attendees were all in high spirits, even in humid conditions.
Starting at the Margaritaville Resort, the tropical vibes of this chain hotel blended perfectly with the poolside house music echoing across the landscape. Casmalia, Freak On, Ship Wrek, Bleu Clair, and Matroda all helped elevate the spirits of attendees in this sultry setting.
The kitschy and colorful Saguaro, with its mid-century modern flair, was surrounded by creative balconies designed by attendees of the event. This throwback hotel saw sun-kissed DJ sets by Mangu, Mac Morse, Demuja, Sosa, Kyle Walker, and Skream.
At the contemporary Renaissance, which boasts the largest pool complex in the city, the lively atmosphere carried on. Here, guests were treated to the four-on-the-floor beats curated by acts like Starfari, Tobehonest, Tita Lau, Volac, and rising house duo Sidepiece (Party Favor and Nitti).
Eventually, the rain had to come, and the first wave of drizzles from Tropical Storm Hilary made its way across the Coachella Valley late Saturday evening, just as the second after-hours show commenced.
Acting as a bit of a reprieve, revelers danced in the rain as Kream finished their extended set. The highlight of the night, however, was the unprecedented DJ set from Channel Tres. Known for their live performances with backup dancers and rapping abilities, the production was a standout with soulful vibes and groovy beats.
As the storm intensified on Sunday morning, event coordinators shared via social media that the party would be moved indoors to the ballrooms of all three host hotels. And so, for the final day of its tenth-anniversary celebration, Splash House parted ways with its noteworthy pools and offered a more intimate club-like setting throughout the day.
All three ballrooms were bumping, as some of the most anticipated DJs of the weekend brought their A-game to the remaining partygoers who braced the storm for one final day of house music.
Highlights from across all venues on Sunday include Mary Droppinz, Classixx, Chapter & Verse, Juliet Mendoza, Daynk, Westend, and Tchami.
Ultimately, Splash House managed to continue its tradition of showcasing top house music tastemakers even in unusual circumstances. The organizer’s choice to pivot indoors instead of canceling the second day of programming should be commended.

Taking Back Sunday have announced details of a new album ‘152’, and shared the single ‘S’old’. Check it out below.
The upcoming LP will be the eighth album from the New York rock veterans, and their first full-length LP in seven years, following on from 2016’s ‘Tidal Wave’.
Produced by Tushar Apte (Demi Lovato, Nicki Minaj) and mixed by Neal Avron (Twenty One Pilots, Bleachers), the album gets its name from the section of road in North Carolin, where the band and their friends would meet up as teenagers. It also features 10 “intensely vulnerable and absorbing” new tracks, which see the four-piece showcase a fresh sense of purpose.
“‘152’ offers a lot more hope and light than we first realised when we were in the thick of it, putting it all together,” the band said of the upcoming album. “We’ve been fortunate enough, through our music, to grow up with a lot of people going through the same things at the same time, and probably feeling the same way.
“Our hope is that you’re able to find a little bit of yourself in this new collection of songs, because you’re not alone, and neither are we,” they added.

‘152’ was also inspired by the vast period of uncertainty that blanketed the world in recent years, and sees the members reflect on the rollercoaster of emotions they faced during those times, as well as kickstart their illustrious career.
“You would think after 20 years, we knew what each other is going to do,” said frontman Adam Lazzara. “But there were so many times making this record where I heard the initial idea and thought I knew where it would go, but then I was super surprised. It’s those kinds of surprises that make it so exciting. That’s why we all still want it so badly.”
”When we’re writing songs, the one thing we ask ourselves, ‘Is it capable of making people feel something?’” added drummer Mark O’Connell. “You try to make people feel emotion. That’s the one goal we went in with, and we think we did it.”
‘152’ is out on October 27 via Fantasy and can be pre-ordered here. Check out the lead single from the album ‘S’old’ below.
The track tackles the themes of adult responsibility and acceptance, and follows previous singles ‘The One’, an anthem of love and brotherhood, ‘Keep Going’, which tackles the darkness of betrayal, and self-aware track, ‘Quit Trying’.

In other Taking Back Sunday news, next month the band are set to play two shows in Florida, before heading over to Australia for various gigs at the end of the year.
The Australia shows will kick off on December 1 and all take place as part of the Good Things Festival. It will see them play in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and the band have confirmed that more tour dates will be announced shortly.
