How To Get Your Music on Spotify in 2023

With over 381 million monthly active users, Spotify is one of the top streaming platforms for sharing your music. But how exactly do you go about getting your songs uploaded to Spotify as an independent artist? This guide covers the two main methods – using a distributor or submitting directly to Spotify – as well as tips for setting yourself up for success on the platform.

Use a Music Distributor

The easiest way to get your music onto Spotify is by using an aggregator or distributor that will deliver your tracks to all the major streaming services.

How Distributors Work

Digital music distributors act as intermediaries that get your songs onto online stores and streaming platforms. They handle all the technical processes like metadata formatting, digital encoding, license acquisition, and uploading.

Here’s an overview of how using a distributor works:

  1. Create an account with your chosen distributor and provide information like your artist name, album details, label if you have one, etc.
  2. Upload your finished audio files and artwork that meet the technical specifications.
  3. Enter key metadata like song titles, genre, copyright info, and more. Distributors need this to properly tag your tracks.
  4. Select which streaming platforms you want your music delivered to. The distributor will encode files and send them out.
  5. Monitor your analytics to see how your music is performing on Spotify and other services. Distributors provide streaming statistics.

Top Music Distributors

Some of the most popular distributors for delivering music to Spotify include:

  • LANDR – Offers distribution to Spotify plus mastering tools and analytics. Pricing starts at $19 per release.

  • DistroKid – Simple distribution with unlimited uploads for $19.99 per year. Fast delivery times.

Pros of Using a Distributor

Going through an aggregator makes getting music onto Spotify straightforward. Benefits include:

  • Streamlined delivery – Don’t have to pitch your music manually to each platform.
  • Wide reach – Most distributors deliver to Spotify plus hundreds of other streaming services, iTunes, YouTube, etc.
  • Hassle-free metadata – Distributors properly format all the required metadata.
  • Analytics – Access streaming stats to see listener demographics, popular tracks, revenue, etc.
  • No fees – Most take a small commission from your earnings rather than upfront fees.

Using a distributor like LANDR or DistroKid makes self-publishing music easier than ever.

Tips for Artist Success on Spotify

Once your music is live on Spotify, there are things you can do to help it find listeners on the massive platform:

  • Optimize your artist profile – Fill out your bio, profile pic, monthly listeners stats and make sure it looks professional.
  • Promote your Spotify links online – Share Spotify track and artist links on your website, social media, emails, etc.
  • Get added to curated playlists – Pitch your tracks to playlist curators to get in front of new audiences.
  • Analyze your data – Use Spotify for Artists analytics to inform release plans and marketing.
  • Engage listeners – Comment on discussions about your music and respond to users.
  • Collaborate with other artists – Joint tracks and guest vocals can expose you to new listeners.
  • Claim your artist profile via Spotify’s verification program to unlock more features.

With the right distributor and promotional strategy, Spotify provides invaluable exposure to broaden your reach as an independent musician.

Omar Apollo shares heartfelt new ballad ‘Ice Slippin’ inspired by him coming out to his family

Omar Apollo has shared a new heartfelt ballad titled ‘Ice Slippin’ that was inspired by him coming out to his family. Listen to the track below.

Co-produced with Teo Halm, ‘Ice Slippin’ deals with both heartbreak and rejection. The song is the lead single from Apollo’s forthcoming EP ‘Live For Me’ which he has said will contain songs that he holds “very close.”

Directed by Rubbberband, the same duo who directed the visual for his hit ‘Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All)’, the ‘Ice Slippin’ lyric video features visuals of the artwork for ‘Live For Me’, a portrait of the singer by Doron Langberg

According to a press release, Apollo shared: “‘Ice Slippin’ is about reliving the thoughts I had passing through my mind the winter I came out to my family. Receiving cold judgment as opposed to the acceptance I felt I deserved. This song is a reflection and reaction of all the emotions I had to face before and after I decided to leave the icy streets of Indiana.”

As a way to promote the song’s release, Apollo placed four ice sculptures of himself in London, New York, and Los Angeles. He took to Instagram to share a teaser for the official video for ‘Ice Slippin’ that is set for release sometime next week.

Apollo’s EP ‘Live For Me’ is set for release on October 6 and is available for pre-order here. The project will follow his 2022 debut LP ‘Ivory’. In a four-star review of the album, NME shared: “Enter the long-awaited ‘Ivory’: a collection of gorgeous, sultry songs that contend with the angst of feeling like you’re the only person who is truly awake and alive in an otherwise sleepy world.”

They continued: “The exhaustive approach is apparent on ‘Ivory’: the arrangements are consistently lush and layered, while Apollo’s pleas of confusion, unrequited crushes and disappointments often evolve into glossy alt-R&B triumphs. Time, clearly, has been kind to him.”

Say goodbye to toxic ex-partners and hello to “In the Cold.”

Ahead of their performances at SLANDER’s “A Better World” show at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Dabin and EDM.com Class of 2021 star William Black have joined forces for the second time with a melodic bass single that explores the empowerment associated with leaving an unhealthy relationship.

Best AI Celebrity Voice Generators in 2023

AI-powered voice synthesis technologies now enable generating vocal clones of famous celebrities. This guide explores the leading services turning text into audio using computer-generated celebrity voices.

What Are AI Celebrity Voices?

AI celebrity voice services leverage machine learning and neural networks to synthesize amazingly realistic human-sounding speech in the unique voiceprint of celebrities and public figures.

They work by “cloning” a voice from samples, then using algorithms to generate new speech modeled on the vocals. The AI celebrity voices can:

  • Speak any text in their realistic voice
  • Clone voices from just 5-10 minutes of audio
  • Capture subtle tonal inflections and dialects
  • Output audio or integrate as a vocal synth plugin

Uses range from voice assistants to game characters, branded content, audiobooks, podcasts, parody videos, and more. As the vocal quality improves continuously, AI voices reach new horizons.

For instance, popular DJ David Guetta integrated an AI-generated version of rapper Eminem’s vocals rapping newly written lyrics seamlessly into a live performance, surprising fans. Such implementations hint at the opportunities ahead for AI voices.

How AI Replicates Voices

The process involves feeding hours of a person’s speech data into machine learning models that deconstruct all the unique elements comprising someone’s voice like:

  • Tone, pitch, timber
  • Inflection patterns
  • Accents and dialects
  • Distinctive pronunciations
  • Breathing sounds
  • Mouthsounds like smacks

The AI isolates each component and models how they combine to form a signature voice. Then it can synthesize new speech matching that voice by generating each element procedurally.

Over time, less sample data is needed as models improve. As little as 5 minutes of audio can produce decent voice matches now with further tuning required. Voice cloning does raise ethical concerns to weigh carefully.

Sonantic lifts voice cloning quality to new heights matching even subtle vocal quirks that make each voice unique.

Voice Cloning Considerations

Key factors when selecting an AI celebrity voice service:

  • Data requirements – How much sample audio is needed? From 5 minutes to over an hour.
  • Voice selection – Is the celebrity voice already available or does it need custom cloning?
  • Naturalness – Does the vocal tone sound human-like or robotic? Newer services achieve amazing realism.
  • Accuracy – How well does it match the signature voice style, accent, inflections etc?
  • Integration – Does it offer seamless API access or downloads for easy integration?
  • Software – Does it work with your chosen editing, animation, game engine etc?
  • Rights – Confirm license terms, some services let you fully own custom voices.
  • Pricing – Factor any upfront voice cloning fees plus usage costs.

Audio Samples Needed

The amount of sample audio required to effectively clone a voice depends on the AI service:

  • 5-10 minutes can produce decent results from leading solutions like Sonantic and Play.ht. Enough for short voice clips.
  • 15-30 minutes begins to capture most voice nuances for longer-form synthesis.
  • 60+ minutes ensures even subtle quirks are modeled. Essential for realistic vocals like voice assistants.

Ideally provide varied sample audio spanning different styles to maximize vocal range. Video interviews often work well capturing casual speech. Voice cloning quality continues to improve with less data needed.

Custom Voice Cloning

In addition to celebrity voices, many providers offer tools for consumers to clone personal voices or those of peers:

  • Voice avatars – For gaming, VR, or virtual assistants
  • Audiobook narration – Auto-generate audiobooks in your own voice or a cloned voice
  • Video voiceover – Add voice narration to videos without recording audio
  • Accessibility tools – Give a voice to those unable to speak
  • Personalization – Add a loved one’s voice to a cherished video
  • Anonymous publishing – Share stories online anonymously

The ability to clone any voice opens new creative possibilities. However, use discretion cloning people you personally know without consent.

Voice Cloning Costs

Pricing ranges substantially based on factors like:

  • Voice selection – Celebrity vs custom clone
  • Data requirements – More audio equals higher cost
  • Technology level – Quality correlates with price
  • Intended usage – Wide usage like games costs more
  • Support level – White-glove service adds fees

Policies Around AI Voices

Laws around voice cloning remain limited, though some best practices exist:

  • Don’t misrepresent a cloned voice as the real person without disclaimers.
  • Avoid sponsorships using cloned voices without permission.
  • Inform listeners when a voice is artificially generated.
  • Seek direct consent where possible for custom clone requests.
  • Review terms closely and comply with voice licenses.
  • Use discretion cloning those you personally know without approval.
  • Ensure cloned content doesn’t infringe on trademarks or defame individuals.

Voice cloning has incredible creative potential but should be utilized ethically with respect for people’s identities and rights. As the technology advances, developing clear policies will be important.

  • Most cloned voices still sound noticeably unnatural without advanced tuning and hours of data.
  • Long-form cloned speech can grow repetitious lacking diverse sample contexts.
  • Legal usage rights remain complex to navigate.
  • Public opinion on cloning recognizable voices without consent remains mixed.
  • Potential for cloned voice misuse like fraud exists.

Further advances around data efficiency, emotion modeling, and sample diversity will maximize cloning realism. Clear ethical and legal standards need developing alongside the technology.

Conclusion

The ability to synthesize incredibly lifelike speech using computer-generated celebrity voices unlocks game-changing opportunities. From crafting immersive VR worlds to providing customizable narration at scale, AI voice cloning reduces reliance on talent availability. While still evolving, rapid progress in machine learning makes cloned voices usable by creatives and enterprises today. Weigh ethical concerns carefully, but embrace voice synthesis as a tool to augment human creativity.

FAQs

Can anybody’s voice be cloned with AI?

In theory, any human voice can be cloned given enough high-quality sample audio data. However, recognizable celebrity voices with more training data produce better current results. Custom cloning quality is steadily improving but still varies.

Is AI voice cloning legal?

No laws specifically regulate voice cloning yet beyond standard intellectual property protections. However, properly informing audiences that a voice is artificially generated is recommended to avoid misrepresentation issues. Handling likeness rights ethically also remains crucial.

What’s better – text to speech or cloned voices?

Cloned voices provide a much more natural human-like sound. But text to speech scales easier for long content without needing lots of sample data. A hybrid approach works well, using cloned voices for key characters and text to speech for minor roles.

Can I use a cloned voice commercially?

Licensing dictates usage rights. Some services fully license cloned voices for commercial use, while others limit usage or require separate branding deals. Study terms closely and get necessary approvals.

What’s the future of AI voice cloning?

As neural network voice models continue improving, even shorter audio samples will produce professional results. Expect cloning direct from video footage to become possible. Voice cloning realism will reach human parity – already close in some cases. Legal and ethical standards will be important as usage scales.

Foals and DJ Rowena join Club NME re-launch with DJ sets

Foals and DJ Rowena have been announced to join the line-up of the return of Club NME – which will be headlined by Courteeners next month.

The return of the iconic club night was revealed last week, with news that Manchester indie veterans Courteeners will be taking to the stage for the first instalment. It will be held at EartH Hall in Hackney, London on Friday September 15.

Now, it has been confirmed that the night will also feature two very special guest DJ sets from both DJ Rowena and British indie rock icons Foals.

Known as a prolific broadcaster, presenter and DJ, Rowena’s can currently be heard on BBC Three Counties Radio, as well as indie DJ duties at Propaganda and her own show on London’s Boogaloo Radio.

Indie giants Foals will also be taking to the decks for the opening night of Club NME, with the members set to deliver their own DJ set. This will follow their massive headline set at Reading & Leeds 2023 this weekend, as they complete the victory lap for their acclaimed 2022 album ‘Life Is Yours‘.

Doors open at 8pm for the upcoming London event, and it will run up until the 2am curfew.

Tickets are currently sold out, although fans can join the waitlist for future Club NME tickets here or below. All tickets are completely free and restricted to two per person, although tickets do not guarantee entry as the events will be held on a first come first served basis.

The return of Club NME marks the first live event that NME will host in collaboration with Ladbrokes LIVE. The partnership was launched in London on August 1, with a surprise set from Sugababes and a huge giveaway – which included tickets to All Points East and the upcoming Sugababes headline show at The O2.

By joining forces, the entertainment hub ensures that all tickets are kept free and allows music lovers the opportunity to connect with their favourite artists in intimate, local spaces.

More Club NME shows around the country are set to be announced shortly.

Earlier this month, journalist and Club NME founder Mark Beaumont reflected on the history behind the live music series to celebrate its return, and explained how it went on to evolve into “the biggest indie club promoter in the UK”.

One of the most memorable editions of Club NME arrived in 2019, when a one-off night saw rock icon Dave Grohl take to the stage for a secret, intimate set. Held at London’s Moth Club venue, the Foo Fighters legend was also joined onstage by ’80s music veteran and Glastonbury star Rick Astley.

The upcoming club night won’t be Foals’ first time appearing at Club NME. Back in 2008, celebrating the success of their debut album ‘Antidotes’, Foals helped bring the world-class event across the pond – launching the San Francisco edition.

The event was recently revisited in NME’s look back at the most memorable stars of Club NME, which recalled how the Oxford math-rockers “were met with a rapturous response, with the crowd dancing energetically to offerings like ‘Cassius’ and ‘The French Open’”.

In other Foals news, the members recently teased plans for new music while at this year’s Lollapalooza.

“We’ve got a song that is unfinished that we call ‘Tranquillity’, frontman Yannis Philippakis said, speaking with NME backstage at the Chicago festival. “It’s not going to be called that in the future but we were all listening to it and vibing with it the other day.”

It’s back! Club NME returns together with Ladbrokes Live with gigs across the UK. Sign up for free at Ladbrokeslive.co.uk for your chance to win tickets.

SLUMBERJACK and Posij Throw Caution to the Wind With Masterful Collaboration, "Scout"

Posij and SLUMBERJACK have never been shy of defying genre conventions, but they’ve outdone themselves with “Scout,” their new collaboration.

The four-on-the-floor track is a stark departure, especially for Posij, a frequent collaborator of Noisia who is renowned for his frenetic breaks and drum & bass music. It’s a compelling collaboration, and one that should prove a hit despite its subversive nature.

Distorted vocal chops slither through a thicket of saturated drums before the track’s first drop, where SLUMBERJACK’s intoxicating sound permeates through a minimalist house arrangement with maximalist energy. Before long, Posij’s unmistakable influence enters the fray, his eccentric sound thrashing about with twisted arpeggios and a wriggling bassline.

“Scout” is out now by way of Zeds Dead’s Deadbeats, which continues to release groundbreaking electronic music at a furious pace. Take a listen below and stream the new track here.

Should You Use AI Mastering?

AI-powered mastering tools make polished, professional-sounding masters far more accessible and affordable than manual mastering. However, there are a few factors to consider when deciding if AI is right for your needs:

Music genre – AI masters well for contemporary, commercial genres. Acoustic, intricate music can pose challenges.

Release plans – If releasing professionally, a human mastering engineer may provide the personalized attention needed for the best quality final product.

Mix quality – AI can struggle with poorly balanced, messy mixes. Quality mixing is key to get the most out of AI mastering.

Ears over eyes – Trust your ears over waveform visuals when judging AI masters. Results may look different but sound better.

Try before you buy – Experiment with demos and free trials before committing to a service or software.

AI Mastering vs. Human Mastering

AI mastering provides benefits like speed, cost savings, and accessibility over human mastering. But human engineers still have advantages in areas like:

  • Subtle audio judgments – Humans excel at nuanced tweaks across frequencies.
  • Creativity – Engineers make impactful sonic choices relying on taste and artistry.
  • Tonal balance – Human ears assess and adjust tonal balance holistically.
  • Musical understanding – Engineers mix technical and musical perspectives.
  • Customization – Engineers adapt to each client’s unique needs and goals.
  • Analog touch – Some engineers incorporate analog gear for natural sound.
  • Quality control – Engineers rigorously critique issues and fix problems.

The ideal solution depends on your budget, goals, and mix quality. AI and human mastering can also be combined, with engineers perfecting an AI pre-master. For non-professional use cases, AI mastering provides tremendous value and convenience. But top-tier releases may still benefit most from human mastering artistry.

  • Strive for a high quality, well-balanced mix. Fix mix problems first, don’t rely on mastering to “fix it in the mix.”
  • Use reference tracks in the same genre for gain staging and tonal balance comparison. Level match precisely.
  • Try multiple genre presets on your track and tweak intensity sliders. See which one sounds most pleasing to your ears.
  • Solo instruments and listen critically to check for issues like masking, imbalance, or harshness introduced by AI processing.
  • Don’t obsess over waveform images or loudness numbers, trust your ears when judging the final master.
  • Use AI mastering services with high resolution output capability for full fidelity.
  • For important projects, consider having a professional mastering engineer review and tweak the AI pre-master.

FAQ

What’s the cost of AI mastering services?

Costs range from free (Bandlab) up to around $30 per master from advanced services like eMastered. Many offer pay per track pricing. LANDR and DistroKid have annual subscription plans that lower the per track cost with high volume.

How fast does AI mastering work?

AI mastering is extremely fast, processing tracks within minutes in most cases and often delivering immediate online results. Some services render faster than others.

What file formats does AI mastering support?

The most commonly supported formats are WAV, FLAC, AIFF, and high-quality MP3. Some services accept additional formats like OGG, M4A, and more.

What sample rate and bit depth is best?

For full fidelity, use a sample rate of at least 44.1 kHz and a bit depth of at least 16-bit. Many services support high resolution formats up to 24-bit/192 kHz for even better quality.

Can the AI be adjusted or customized?

Yes, most services offer some way to select genre presets and tweak the intensity or strength of the processing. Advanced services allow further parameter adjustments.

How is AI mastering different from human mastering?

AI is fast, affordable and accessible but lacks the subtlety, customization and finesse of human engineers. Many use AI as a starting point before having a human refine the master.

Should I have my music mastered by AI or a human?

For professional, critically important releases, human mastering is still advisable. But for demos, personal recordings, and non-commercial use, AI provides enormous value. Try both and see which meets your needs.

Conclusion

AI-powered solutions like LANDR, Ozone, and CloudBounce make mastering your music far more accessible than ever before. Intelligent algorithms can polish mixes and prepare tracks for distribution with the click of a button. While human mastering still has advantages for top-tier production, AI is ideal for home studio producers looking to save time and money without sacrificing too much quality. Try multiple services and see which workflow best fits your needs as an independent musician.

Ed Sheeran announces new album ‘Autumn Variations’

Ed Sheeran has announced a new album, ‘Autumn Variations’, just months after releasing his comeback album ‘Subtract’.

The album will be released on September 29 via Sheeran’s own Gingerbread Man Records and, like ‘Subtract’, was produced by The National‘s Aaron Dessner.

“Last autumn, I found that my friends and I were going through so many life changes. After the heat of the summer, everything either calmed, settled, fell apart, came to a head or imploded,” Sheeran said in a press release.

“When I went through a difficult time at the start of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and come to terms with what was going on, and when I learned about my friend’s different situations, I wrote songs, some from their perspectives, some from mine, to capture how they and I viewed the world at that time. There were highs of falling in love and new friendships among lows of heartbreak, depression, loneliness and confusion.”

“My dad and brother told me about a composer called Elgar, who composed ‘Enigma Variations’, where each of the 14 compositions were about a different one of his friends. This is what inspired me to make this album. When I recorded ‘Subtract’ with Aaron Dessner, we clicked immediately. We wrote and recorded non-stop and this album was born out of that partnership. I feel he has captured the feeling of autumn so wonderfully in his sonics and I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.”

Sheeran had been teasing new music last week, sharing a post on Instagram that read “autumn is coming” followed by a spoof advertisement for “damper hampers” ready for the upcoming season.

‘Autumn Variations’ tracklist:

1. ‘Magical’
2. ‘England’
3. ‘Amazing’
4. ‘Plastic Bag’
5. ‘Blue’
6. ‘American Town’
7. ‘That’s On Me’
8. ‘Page’
9. ‘Midnight’
10. ‘Spring’
11. ‘Punchline’
12. ‘When Will I Be Alright’
13. ‘The Day I Was Born’
14. ‘Head > Heels’

Meanwhile, Sheeran recently shot down any suggestion that he would play the Super Bowl Halftime show.

“There was a conversation awhile ago, I think it was when Coldplay did it – of me going on to play ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and I think that would be the only way I would do it is if I were joining someone else,” he said.

“I think it’s an American thing. I don’t have pizazz,” Sheeran explained.
