Odyssey Music Festival Delivered Bass, House and Cyberpunk Energy to Tampa Bay

Hosting an outdoor festival on Florida’s west coast in the heat of the summertime is a daunting task, but the team behind Odyssey Music Festival rose to the occasion for the event’s successful sophomore year. The sounds of thumping bass and house music radiated across multiple stages, with stellar performances by Mr. Carmack, Saka, Ms. Mada and many more.

Known for pushing cyberpunk culture, the festival’s organizers leveled up its programming in 2023. They helped manage heat and humidity with more shade and misting areas, expanded the vendor village, increased the number of featured mural artists and interactive art installations, and even hosted a rave fashion runway show.

“To witness Odyssey Music festival grow and bloom from its roots has been such a dream to see it come to life, but now to revisit it in a grander scheme this year was really impactful for all of us,” Odyssey Music Festival co-founder Christine Ngo, also known as XTN, told EDM.com. “We were truly at a loss of words to see all of Vinoy Park absolutely glowing and filled with double the amount of guests from last year. We couldn’t be anymore happy to witness this growth and most importantly, to actively connect with and inspire our local and worldwide communities to discover new forms and aspects of the arts.”

Co-founder Tom Grecco finessed a very special surprise into the day, too, proposing to Christine in front of the Odyssey crowd. “It was such a special feeling considering we both moved to Saint Pete with our shared dream to produce and grow OMF20XX together,” Ngo gushed.

STAYC return with whimsical ‘Bubble’ music video

STAYC have returned with their new mini-album ‘Teenfresh’ and a music video for its lead single ‘Bubble’.

On August 16, the K-pop girl group unveiled the music video for their new single ‘Bubble’. The song is the title track of their third mini-album ‘Teenfresh’, which was released at the same time.

The new visual features STAYC as students living at a school dormitory as their headmistress, played by South Korean comedian and television host Hong Jin-kyung, tries to keep them from sneaking out.

What we want is circles / No one knows the future, nobody knows / What should I do, I can’t be / Things are unpredictable, stupid, stop / Naggings are bubble, bubble, bubble,” they sing on the chorus.

In addition to ‘Bubble’ the new record includes the B-sides ‘Not Like You’, ‘I Wanna Do’ and ‘Be Mine’, as well as English and sped-up versions of ‘Bubble’.

‘Teenfresh”s release marks the K-pop girl group’s second comeback of 2023, following their February single album ‘Teddy Bear’. That project featured a Korean-language version of their viral hit Japanese single ‘Poppy’.

Back in May, STAYC held their fanmeeting event ‘SWITH Gelato Factory’ across several days in South Korea, later bringing the show to Osaka and Yokohama in Japan. In addition to their original tracks, STAYC also performed a cover of EXO’s 2018 single ‘Love Shot’.

In other K-pop news, BLACKPINK have announced that they will be ending off their ‘Born Pink’ tour with a two-night concert in Seoul next month, the second night of which will also be available to stream online.

Stevie Nicks on watching ‘Daisy Jones & The Six’

Fleetwood Mac‘s Stevie Nicks has shared her thoughts on Amazon Prime Video‘s Daisy Jones & The Six after watching it for the second time.

Last night (August 15), Nicks took to social media to talk about the Prime Video series, sharing her thoughts on her recent rewatch. “Just finished watching [Daisy Jones & The Six] for the 2nd time. In the beginning, it wasn’t really my story, but Riley seamlessly, soon became my story.”

She continued: “It brought back memories that made me feel like a ghost watching my own story. It was very emotional for me. I just wish Christine [McVie] could have seen it. She would have loved it. Hopefully it will continue…”

Loosely based on Fleetwood Mac, the Prime Video limited series adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel chronicles the rise and fall of a fictional band, set in the 1970s. Led by singers Daisy Jones (played here by Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin), the fictional band experience bitter arguments, offstage tensions and incredible heights of success.

Christine McVie died in late November 2022, aged 79. Her cause of death was not disclosed at the time, with a statement from her family stating only that she “passed away peacefully” in hospital “following a short illness”.

In April this year, a cause of death was revealed following the release of McVie’s death certificate. Her death was reportedly primarily caused by suffering an ischemic stroke. According to McVie’s death certificate, the musician had also been diagnosed with “metastatic malignancy of unknown primary origin”, meaning cancer cells had been detected in her body but it was unable to be determined where they had originated from.

In February this year, Mick Fleetwood discussed the possibility of Fleetwood Mac performing live again given McVie’s death. “Right now, I truly think the line in the sand has been drawn with the loss of Chris,” he said during an interview on the red carpet at this year’s Grammy Awards. “I’d say we’re done, but then we’ve all said that before. It’s sort of unthinkable right now.”

Last month, Fleetwood Mac announced the upcoming live album version of their seminal 1977 record ‘Rumours’. ‘Rumours Live’ is set to drop on September 8 via Rhino and features recordings taken at a show at Los Angeles’ Forum, attended by nearly 20,000 fans on August 29, 1977. It was one of three shows at the Forum, which came at the end of their tour in support of the album that had been released earlier that year.

Here Are Martin Garrix's Favorite Spots On the Island of Ibiza

Ever wondered what it’s like to see the clubbing capital of the world through the eyes of one of its biggest DJs?

Martin Garrix recently teamed up with the editors of Apple Maps’ “Guides” feature—packages of tourist information that allow users to organize locations and destinations on the platform—to spotlight his top places on the island of Ibiza. The Dutch dance music icon seems to have a soft spot for the radiant White Isle, opening up about his favorite view, seafood restaurant, hiking trail and more.

Fans who want to take in Ibiza’s breathtaking sunsets, Garrix says, should head to the mythical Es Vedrà, a small, uninhabited island that’s part of the Cala d’Hort nature reserve.

“Es Vedrà is a small island located near Ibiza that is considered to hold a special magnetic energy. I enjoy taking a boat ride to this unique and beautiful location. The lookout point is also amazing, where you can witness the most insane sunsets. It’s something you should experience at least once in your life. I’ve spent some of my most amazing evenings there with friends.”

When it comes to Garrix’s favorite place on Ibiza, he singled out the fabled Ushuaïa. Since first sneaking in over a decade ago at the age of 15, he’s been regularly tearing up the iconic venue for his high-flying summer residencies.

“My favorite place in Ibiza is definitely Ushuaïa [where I have my summer residency]. I love the setting, atmosphere, and overall setup,” Garrix said. “It’s a surreal place, and I’ve been going there for over 12 years. The first time I went, I snuck in to see Swedish House Mafia, and the year after that, I played a set myself. It will always be magical to play there with the sun going down, planes flying over, and people dancing.”

Record Store Day is relaunching its RSD Unsigned competition.

The contest, running in partnership with Breed Media, will result in one unsigned artist having their music pressed on a 500 record run using “Bio-Vinyl” which according to a press release is a “new more sustainable but acoustically identical vinyl compound”. How BOMBAYS is Amplifying the Soundwaves of South Asian Heritage in Electronic Music

Born and raised as a first-generation Indian kid, Nikhil Thakar, who produces electronic music as BOMBAYS, emerged from a world where life’s path often diverges into two distinct routes.

Confronted with the choice between conforming to the conventional norms of acquiring a business degree and entering the corporate world or embarking on a journey to actualize one’s passion, Thakar unflinchingly chose the latter. A graduate in business and on the cusp of GMAT preparation, the seismic shift to music beckoned him, akin to announcing a voyage to space.

He decisively packed his belongings, bid farewell to familiarity and journeyed to the sun-drenched heart of Los Angeles, where Icon Collective became his crucible for elevating his sonic craftsmanship.

c/o BOMBAYS

Deeply intertwined with his pursuit was the tenacious embrace of his cultural heritage. BOMBAYS navigated the contours of production while harboring an unwavering desire to mirror his roots and ancestry. It was in this exploration that he unearthed the poignant void, an industry bereft of the vibrancy and diversity encapsulated in his journey.

The dearth of representation for individuals of color—particularly the Brown community—stoked the flames of Thakar’s motivation. His vision expanded beyond his own journey, an aspiration to transcend into a beacon of inspiration, a testament to possibility for producers sharing his narrative across the globe.

The Harmonic Confluence: Bollywood’s Resonant Echoes

BOMBAYS has transformed his journey into an anthem of courage, an ode to culture and an unceasing symphony of creativity.

Inspired by the intricate symphony of 90s Bollywood records, BOMBAYS found his muse in the delicate balance of complexity and simplicity that lay within each composition. The echoes of this inspiration reverberate throughout his unique sonic tapestry, where every beat and melody resonates with both sensuality and energy, infusing his sound with an enigmatic allure that effortlessly commands the dance floor.

Empowerment Through Artistry: The SCORPEUR Initiative

Elevating his artistic prowess beyond melodies and rhythms, BOMBAYS launched the “SCORPEUR” merchandise line, a movement that extends far beyond music. With each purchase, a percentage of profits journeys back to India, embodying a heartfelt commitment to affect positive change and offer a helping hand to those in need.

A Vision Unveiled: Crafting the Future, One Note at a Time

BOMBAYS’ artistic odyssey is far from fleeting; it’s a symphonic crescendo that reverberates across continents. With grand aspirations that stretch beyond horizons, his focus remains fixated on the intricacies of each record. In this dance between creation and vision, he orchestrates an exquisite narrative, visualizing not only the rhythms that will pulse through a crowd but the emotions that will entwine with each note, painting an evocative canvas that transcends mere music.

As BOMBAYS sets sail on this musical voyage, he does so not only as an artist, but also as a harbinger of change, embodiment of artistic fusion and a relentless champion of diversity and empowerment. In each beat, note and endeavor, he breathes life into a kaleidoscope of inspirations and harmonies that resonate with unwavering passion.

There are not many individuals in the electronic music industry who represent the diaspora of what being Brown means. To be able to inculcate his cultural influences into his music, BOMBAYS is changing the game for the better. Cultural representation is more than sampling a sound from your favorite ethnic artist, it often is appreciating the talent that comes directly from those communities.

You can catch BOMBAYS at SoCal’s Nocturnal Wonderland festival on September 17th.
